From the 34th District Democrats’ newsletter:

Save the Date For the 2018 34th District Democratic Caucus

Saturday, March 24, 10 am – 1 pm

At Evergreen High School, 830 SW 116th St.

Join us to elect delegates to the state convention and hear from candidates for office, including 34th LD state House and Senate seats.

In accordance with the charter of the Democratic Party of Washington State, every two years the party holds a State Convention where the party platform and rules are adopted.

Those decisions are voted on democratically, by delegates elected at Local Party Organizations throughout the state. The 34th District Democrats have been allocated 14 delegate slots to fill, along with 7 alternates.

To vote at the Caucus an individual must be a resident, registered voter in the 34th Legislative District, and sign a registration sheet stating that they are a Democrat, and agree to recordation of and public display of their attendance at the Caucus. Further, 17 year-olds who will turn 18 by election day, November 6, 2018, are allowed (and encouraged!) to fully participate and vote in the caucuses and conventions, and to run and serve as delegate.

Pints of Ales & Killer Whale Tales
A kid- (and dog-) friendly event at Optimism Brewing Company

1 pm to 3 pm, March 31, 2018
1158 Broadway

Join West Seattle-based Killer Whale Tales at Capitol Hill’s Optimism Brewing Company on March 31, 2018 from 1 pm to 3 pm. Killer Whale Tales is a Seattle-based environmental education non-profit. Our program uses storytelling and field-based science to inspire students to take an active role in the conservation of Pacific Northwest killer whales and their habitat.

At Pints of Ales & Killer Whale Tales, our Founder, Jeff Hogan, will deliver an abbreviated version of our interactive program. You’ll learn about the killer whales that live in our Puget Sound waters and what we can do to help protect them and the ecosystem they live in. This is an urgent time for both as environmental protections themselves are endangered.

Come and join us! This event is free and fun for all ages. We will provide some light snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments. Beer will be available for purchase at the bar and Chavoya’s Hot Dogs will also be available for purchase. (Beer and hot dog sales do not benefit KWT).

Children and dogs are welcome at Optimism Brewing Company, so bring your friends and family

With just 76 orcas in J, K and L pods, the Southern Resident Killer Whale population is nearing its all time low of 71 individuals. Is the population still viable – can they be saved? What have we learned over the past year that will help these orcas recover, and what are the most pressing questions still to be addressed?

Join us to hear the latest findings and future research directions, presented by Dr. Brad Hanson, NWFSC lead killer whale researcher.

Buy tickets now to reserve your seat. And hurry – this will likely sell out.

This is the first in the 2018 Orca Talk series hosted by The Whale Trail in West Seattle. Thanks to Nucor Steel for sponsoring this Orca Talk!

About the Speaker

Brad Hanson joined the Northwest Fisheries Science Center in April of 2003. Previously, Brad worked as a Wildlife Biologist at the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle, WA. Brad received a Ph.D. from the University of Washington where he worked on the development of improved tag attachment systems for small cetaceans. He also holds an M.S. in Fisheries from the University of Washington and a B.A. in Zoology also from the University of Washington. Brad is an ecologist and is currently studying foraging and habitat use of Southern Resident killer whales and health assessment of harbor and Dall’s porpoises.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites where the public may view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment. Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 50 million people each year. The Whale Trail is currently adding new sites along the North American west coast, from California to British Columbia.

The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State. Join us!

Harbor porpoise are one of the most abundant animals in the Salish Sea, yet little is known about them. Pacific Mammal Research is dedicated to understanding more about this poorly understood population, using techniques such as photo-ID surveys and passive acoustic technology.

Learn more about this shy and elusive species, and the research that is shedding new light on them.

Whale Trail founder Donna Sandstrom will also give an update on Governor Jay Inslee’s Orca Recovery Task Force and how you can become involved in protecting the southern resident orcas.

Join us as we kick off a new season of Orca Talks! Buy tickets in advance here!

About the Speaker

Dr. Cindy Elliser has conducted marine mammal research for over 15 years. She worked with Dr. Denise Herzing and the Wild Dolphin Project studying Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins in the Bahamas for 10 years before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2014 and founding Pacific Mammal Research to study marine mammals in the Salish Sea. She also is an adjunct biology/chemistry instructor at Skagit Valley College.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail is a series of sites to view orcas and other marine mammals from shore.

Many members of the team first met on the successful effort to return Springer, the orphaned orca, to her pod.

Haunted Hike @ Kiwanis Schoenwald Park
Oct 13 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Haunted Hike

Saturday, October 13, 2018

Kiwanis Schoenwald Park

16030 Sylvester Road SW

Burien, WA

(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)

5:30-8:30 pm

Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.

Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.

And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.

West Seattle walk & podcast recording @ Whale Tail Park
Oct 14 @ 10:00 am

Are you interested in a historic, nature-rich guided walk through Schmitz Preserve Park and around Alki Point?

On Sunday, October 14 Podcast: West Seattle will record West Seattle Walks Part 2: Old Growth and Alki Point starting at 10:00 a.m. at Whale Tail Park. The walk is from David B. Williams book Seattle Walks: Discovering History and Nature in the City. Podcast host Andrew Stuckey will be recording the walk and reading from the book for an upcoming episode. Anyone who would like to join the expedition is welcome to meet at the whale at 10:00 a.m. Andrew will be the one with guidebook, headphones, and microphone. Water and a snack are recommended for this 4.4 mile loop, which will likely take 2-3 hours to complete.

The book notes: “The walk traverses a one-third mile dirt path in Schmitz Preserve Park. The path can be muddy and requires crossing a narrow creek (two feet wide) on flat rocks. The walk has a few short steep sections up the Schmitz Preserve Park trail and one long descent on a sidewalk. Public restrooms are available near the beginning of the walk, but that’s about it.”

The Whale Trail: Kin-directed prey-sharing behavior @ Dakota Place Park
Nov 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Family feast: Kin-directed prey sharing behavior in northern resident killer whales
Presentation by Brianna Wright

When: November 8th, 2018 7:00-8:30 Doors open at 6:15

Where: Dakota Place Park 4304 SW Dakota

Cost: (updated) $10 General Admission; Kids under 12 are Free

Advance tickets: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3739714

Presented by The Whale Trail

Resident killer whales prey almost exclusively on salmon and depend particularly on Chinook (the least common species of salmon in the Pacific Northwest), which makes up the majority of their known diet. Despite the importance of Chinook to the survival of individual killer whales, they frequently choose to share this critical resource with family members. Brianna Wright, Eva Stredulinsky, Graeme Ellis and Dr. John Ford conducted a 12-year study (2002-2014) examining patterns of prey sharing behavior among northern resident killer whales. In particular, the talk will discuss the prevalence of prey sharing between close maternal relatives, and the role that this cooperative behavior may have played in the evolution of this population’s unusually stable social structure.

A scientific article presenting the results from this study, entitled “Kin-directed food sharing promotes lifetime natal philopatry of both sexes in a population of fish-eating killer whales, Orcinus orca”, is available free of charge from the journal Animal Behavior at the following link: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003347216000737

About the Speaker

Brianna Wright holds a BSc. in Biology and Anthropology from the University of Victoria and a MSc. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia. She began her career in whale research as an undergraduate co-op student with Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s marine mammal research group in 2007, transitioning to full-time work as a research technician for the same team in 2008. Her graduate thesis used Dtags (a suction-cup attached device that records dive depth, body position and underwater sound) to investigate the fine-scale foraging behavior of resident killer whales. In 2014, Brianna graduated from UBC and returned to the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, where she currently works as a marine mammal biologist for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. In 2016, she published a paper with Eva Stredulinsky, Graeme Ellis and John Ford about prey sharing behavior by resident killer whales and its influence on the evolution of their unique social structure. This paper was awarded Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Paper of the Year award in 2016. Her recent research includes projects on resident killer whale population monitoring, feeding behavior and echolocation, as well as habitat modeling for large baleen whales to help reduce the impact of vessel strikes on these vulnerable populations.

West Seattle Democratic Women – NOVEMBER 2018 PROGRAM @ Admiral UCC
Nov 15 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

For our meeting and program, I thought we could take in a breath and take in a movie with other WSDWers and neighbors, since we all deserve something inspiring and engaging, yet still relevant and informative!

As we move from election season into the holiday season, our November program, we will be a screening of “RBG”, the award-winning documentary about Supreme Court Justice and “pop icon” Ruth Bader Ginsburg! It is relevant and contemporary (#MeToo, Kavanaugh, Trump, etc.), and can be a great guide as we pledge to keep our eyes on the highest court in the land–and it is a film that movie-goers and critics alike are still raving about!

Also we are actively seeking Officers for our Executive Board and Committee Chairs. If you are looking for ways to get involved but don’t know what to do, this could be a wonderful way, with a low-key time commitment, to make a big difference in our organization and in our community! Please contact me (werdachel@aol.com) for more information!

Don’t forget to bring your unused, unopened sample- and hotel/travel-size items (shampoo/conditioner/lotion, lip balm, toothbrush/& paste, cosmetic samples, perfume samples, spa/facial masks, aromatherapy products, mani-pedi products, etc.) We are collecting them for our December Holiday Service Party! We will be filling over 100 goodie bags, so we need as many of these items as you can bring (Thank You!)

Here are the details for our November Meeting and Program:

Date: Thursday, November 15th

Time:
6:00 pm — Registration/ Social Time Begins
6:30 pm — Meeting Business
7:00 pm — Film Screening — RBG

Program Venue: Admiral Congregational UCC

Address: 4320 SW Hill St.

Please RSVP to (werdachel@aol.com) with your name and the names of any others coming with you as soon as possible, so that we can plan the program accordingly.

Spring Equinox sunset watch @ Solstice Park
Mar 20 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Join West Seattle’s own Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen on Wednesday, March 20th, to watch the Spring Equinox sunset at Solstice Park across from Lincoln Park. The sunset itself will be around 7:10 pm. All ages welcome! From Alice:

March 20 Spring Equinox Sunset Watch — 2019
March 18th, 2019
It’s time for the 40th seasonal sunset watch!

40!!!
When: Wednesday, March 20, 7:00 pm (so come at 6:30 pm)
Actual sunset is supposed to be at 7:22pm, but we have noticed that the Sun sets about 15 minutes earlier than the USNO says, because of the horizon altitude.
The equinox moment is Wednesday, March 20, 2:58pm
Where: Solstice Park – all the way up the hill from the tennis courts (or, if you’re not in Seattle, wherever you have a view of the western horizon!)
Who: Everyone welcome, as usual. (Please do leash your dogs as we usually have a good number of people, kids, and other dogs around.)

Come watch the sunset at Solstice Park in West Seattle. I’ll be there even if it is cloudy because sometimes the Sun peeks through just as it begins to set, but if it is driving rain or a thunderstorm I’m staying home with some tea!
