Words, Writers, & West Seattle: Claudia Castro Luna @ Southwest Library
Jan 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Join Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna for an evening of conversation and poetry.

Claudia Castro Luna is Washington State’s current Poet Laureate and former Seattle Civic Poet. She is the author of the Pushcart nominated Killing Marias and This City. She is also the creator of the acclaimed Seattle Poetic Grid, which traces the city in the voices of its citizens. Claudia Castro Luna is passionate about the value of community building through the power of language, and her poems look at our personal ties, our relationships to the natural world and the consequences of injustice, wherever it is found.

This program is part of the Words, Writers & West Seattle series which features writers connected to the Duwamish Peninsula. Programs are held monthly on the second Thursday evenings. Books will be available for purchase. Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Space is limited at library events. Please come early to make sure you get a seat. Due to the fire code, we can’t exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms.

WordsWest Event with Writers E. J. Koh and Juan Carlos Reyes @ C & P Coffee Co.
Jan 16 @ 7:00 pm

What is truly “new” in the New Year? How much of our optimism or pessimism for what’s to come has to do with what’s happening now, and how much has to do with unresolved collisions? On January 16, 2019, writers E. J. Koh and Juan Carlos Reyes wrestle with “Past and Future Selves”: the intangible apparitions that haunt our everyday lives.

E. J. Koh is the author of A Lesser Love, winner of the Pleiades Editors Prize, and her memoir The Magical Language of Others is forthcoming from Tin House Books. Her work has appeared in Academy of American Poets, Boston Review, Columbia Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Prairie Schooner. She received fellowships from The American Literary Translators Association, Kundiman, The MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, and elsewhere. She lives in Seattle, Washington.

Juan Carlos Reyes has published the novella A Summer’s Lynching (Quarterly West) and the fiction chapbook Elements of a Bystander (Arcadia Press). His stories, poems and essays have appeared in Ascentos Review, KGB Lit, and Hawai’i Review, among others. He is a 2018 Jack Straw Writers Fellow and is currently an Assistant Professor of creative writing at Seattle University. He is also the chief editor at Big Fiction magazine. He is the recipient of the Artist Trust 2018 LaSalle Storyteller Award in Fiction.

The Favorite Poem Project, a vital part of WordsWest’s monthly literary events, invites a community member to share a favorite poem and information about his or her organization. On January 16th, we welcome a favorite poem from Fawn Coussens, MSPT, owner and physical therapist at Kinetic Physical Therapy, located one block south of the West Seattle Junction.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw. Grant funding from Poets & Writers, Inc. allows WordsWest to pay featured writers for their time and talent.

Words, Writers, West Seattle: Betsy Bell @ Southwest Library
Feb 14 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Join us to hear Betsy Bell read from her chronicle, “Open Borders: A Personal Story of Love, Loss and Anti-War Activism.”

Betsy Bell chronicles her personal journey during the 1980s as an anti-war activist and the activities of Target Seattle. In 1983, she travels to Tashkent, Seattle’s Sister City in Uzbekistan and discovers the power of people-to-people connections across political boundaries. She explores how ordinary citizens can be transformed into agents of peace.

A mother, grandmother, and businesswoman, Betsy Bell is a longtime justice activist. Reaching across boundaries that separate us from ‘The Other’ has been a constant thread in Betsy’s life. You can learn more about Betsy Bell by visiting her website.

Words, Writers, West Seattle: Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred @ Southwest Library
Mar 14 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Join Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard for an illustrated book discussion of “Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred.”

Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard’s new coffee-table book showcases the most compelling and essential of the more than 1,800 “Seattle Now & Then” photo-history columns that Dorpat has produced for the Sunday magazine of “The Seattle Times” for more than 36 years, since January 1982.

The book covers views from all directions throughout Seattle, highlighting its native roots and earliest days as a city (and its earliest photographs), and includes a special, four-foot-wide gatefold that reveals the city’s massive growth from the prospect of Queen Anne Hill.

Dramatic images comparing “then” to “now” explore the city’s regrades, bridges, thoroughfares and countless Seattle landmarks. The Great Seattle Fire, the Gold Rush, Pike Place Market, the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair get attention, as do breathtaking panoramas, all in a size and clarity rarely seen.

Seattle public historian Paul Dorpat and co-author Jean Sherrard, who has served as Dorpat’s “now” photographer for the past 12 years, will be available after the talk to personally inscribe books.

This event at the Southwest branch library is part of the Words, Writers & West Seattle series which features writers connected to the Duwamish Peninsula. Programs are held monthly on the second Thursday evenings. Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Intersections Festival @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Mar 21 @ 2:00 pm

Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance will be happening for the second year, this March 21-24, 2019 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in the Delridge neighborhood. Intersections showcases performers in improv, sketch, stand-up, burlesque, storytelling, spoken word, music, theatre, and dance; however, it doesn’t end there.Intersections remains committed to its focus on equity, inclusion, and representation. “Seattle is a diverse city,” says Jekeva Phillips, one member of the all-womxn team, “Why are we only seeing the same faces and hearing the same voices?” Phillips (who is featured in City Arts Magazine’s 2018 Future List) was approached about the project by Natasha Ransom, and Kinzie Shaw of FEELINGS, an Improv duo which aims to amplify intersectional feminism in the face of a white-cis-hetero patriarchy.

The four-day festival will feature a myriad of comedy-related acts from Seattle’s best and brightest POC, Queer, Trans, non-binary, and neurodiverse performers. Each show is a different experience loaded with a variety of acts. No show in the festival will be the same, so the Intersections team strongly encourages patrons to be a part of it all. “We are so excited to be in the audience for this festival,” Say co-founders Natasha Ransom and Kinzie Shaw “The talent is just unbelievably good and we want to soak as much of it in as possible.”

Don’t miss our Giving Party, coming up Saturday March 9th from 2-4pm at Capitol Cider. It’s completely free to attend! For more information about the festival, like Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance on Facebook or visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

For more information about the lineup, visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

Intersections is funded in part by 4Culture, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, Planned Parenthood, and KEXP.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Apr 6 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society

Words, Writers, West Seattle With Kurt Armbruster @ Southwest Branch Seattle Public Library
Apr 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Join us to hear Kurt Armbruster discuss his newest railway history, Pacific Coast, Seattle’s Own Railroad.

In 1870, Seattle had high hopes that the transcontinental Northern Pacific Railroad would make the city its western terminus. Instead, the railroad chose Tacoma. Seattle panicked and then rolled up its sleeves and built its own railroad. The Pacific Coast Railroad and its predecessors were key to assuring Seattle’s rise to become the Pacific Northwest’s greatest city.

Kurt Armbruster is a Seattle native, historian, author and musician/songwriter. He has written numerous articles for historical journals and books including Orphan Road, The Railroad Comes to Seattle, 1853-1911, Before Seattle Rocked, A City and Its Music, and Playing for Change, Burton and Florence James and the Struggle for American Theater.

This program is part of the Words, Writers & West Seattle author series which features writers connected to the Duwamish Peninsula. Programs are held monthly on the second Thursday evenings.

Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.

This event is at the Southwest branch library.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Space is limited at library events. Please come early to make sure you get a seat. Due to the fire code, we can’t exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms.

In the penultimate event of WordsWest Literary Series’s five-year history, on May 15, 2019, novelist Erica Bauermeister and poet/visual artist Alan Chong Lau will muse upon “Awakening the Senses.” As an added bonus, independent bookstore Open Books will have copies of Erica’s latest novel, The Scent Keeper, available to purchase one week before its official release date!

Erica Bauermeister is the bestselling author of four novels. Her most recent is The Scent Keeper (St. Martin’s, May 2019), a moving and evocative coming-of-age novel about childhood stories, families lost and found, and how a fragrance conjures memories capable of shaping the course of our lives. Her other novels include The School of Essential Ingredients (Putnam, 2009), Joy for Beginners (Putnam, June 2011), and The Lost Art of Mixing (Putnam, 2013). She is also the co-author of two nonfiction books: 500 Great Books by Women: A Reader’s Guide and Let’s Hear It For the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14.

Poet and visual artist Alan Chong Lau’s collections of poetry include Songs for Jadina (1980), which won the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation; Blues and Greens: A Produce Worker’s Journal (2000); and no hurry (2007). With Lawson Fusao Inada and Garrett Hongo, he authored The Buddha Bandits Down Highway 99 (1978). His work has appeared in anthologies such as From Totems to Hip-Hop: A Multicultural Anthology of Poetry Across the Americas 1900–2002 (2002) and What Book!?: Buddha Poems from Beat to Hiphop (1998). Poems by Alan Chong Lau in collaboration with photos by John Levy will appear in the online literary magazine Otata starting in May, 2019. His book of poems, prose and artwork about Japan will be published by Entre Rios Books in 2020. Arts editor for the International Examiner, Lau coordinates the Asian review of books Pacific Reader, and ArtXchange Gallery represents his visual work.

The Favorite Poem Project invites a community member to share a favorite poem and information about his or her organization. On May 15th, we welcome the host for WordsWest throughout its history, C & P Coffee Company.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw. Grant funding from Poets & Writers, Inc. allows WordsWest to pay featured writers for their time and talent.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Jun 1 @ 10:00 am

West Seattle High School 2019 all-school reunion
Jun 1 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-SCHOOL REUNION

First off – please note that we’re shaking things up a bit this year! With accessibility issues of many of our honored guests, and a very small cast of volunteers managing this event, we’ve opted for a MUCH simpler approach than in years past. Instead of breaking out into classrooms, we are designating tables for each range of years in or around the Commons, and for some in the Library. Think very large open house vibe. As laid out in the program map, tables will be organized chronologically by year range, so most of you will be next to the table of classes in the range above or behind you. No more climbing stairs, hunting for elusive rooms, traversing a daunting length of hallways, and dashing between classrooms to find and greet friends and family from other years.

We thank you in advance for supporting this change! As always, we welcome suggestions for improvement (highly recommended to be accompanied by offers for help ;) ), in our effort to maximize community and rapport while minimizing effort for planners and guests alike.

2019 Schedule of Events

4:00 – 5:30 pm View the Classic Cars showcased on SW Stevens outside the Historical entrance

4:00 – 4:30 pm Sign in, pick up programs, name tag and roam the halls

4:30 – 5:30 pm Individual Class Reunions in the Commons (or Library)

5:00 – 5:30 pm Hall of Fame Member’s video plays in the Theater

5:30 – 7:00 pm Presentations in the Theater: Scholarships Announcements, Recognition of the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1969, Hall of Fame Induction

And….

4:00 – 6:45 pm WSHS Baseball Team selling Mariners Tickets to benefit the WSHS Baseball

4:00 – 6:45 pm Refreshments available for purchase to benefit the Student Booster Club programs

West Seattle High School 2019 All-School Reunion After-Party @ Whisky West
Jun 1 @ 7:30 pm

West Seattle High School Alumni All-School Reunion After-Party Open Mic at Whisky West, Sat 6/1 7:30 pm:

Tim Turner has announced 2019 is his last year to host the annual open-mic live music event long known as the Westside High Alumni All-School Reunion After-Party. This event, started in 2006, features any number of willing and talented alumni musicians. Expect to see many of the usual suspects including Kevin Mason and others. In addition, there will be a special performance this year. The Crystal Sect band, made up of West Seattle High School students back in the 60’s, will perform a musical reprisal. Joining Tim are the other former Crystal Sect band members, Tom Hopp on bass, Dave Coleman on drums, Bob Rice on guitar, and Marc Orsen on keys.
Whisky West enjoys welcoming this robust community of revelers, and offer concoctions such as The Westside High and The Wildcat specialty drinks sporting visual hues of blue and gold.

Drop on over following the All-School Reunion for great snack and dinner options in addition to their notable beverage offerings, where fellow Westside High Alumni share an evening of music, dancing and community.

21 and older, please.

Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Jun 2 all-day

(Note: Beach Naturalist events occur between 10 am and 4 pm. Each day /event time varies with the tide and lasts about 2 hours. Low tide usually falls in the middle of the hours listed.)

Join trained volunteers from Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program for a free guided exploration at very low tide (note the dates and specific times for each day below) No reservations necessary.

Dress for the windy weather and wear shoes that can get wet and handle very slippery surfaces. This program designed for adults and 3 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Find events at Lincoln Park (beach) and South Alki/Constellation Park.

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

Words, Writers, West Seattle With David Buerge @ Southwest Branch Seattle Public Library
Jun 13 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Chief Seattle wrote nothing down during his life, yet his words—both real and imagined—are known throughout the world. The result is a man made up of both historical and fictional aspects, from which conflicting messages can be gleaned.

David M. Buerge, a biographer and a historian to the Duwamish Tribe, Seattle’s mother’s people, spent more than 20 years exploring the man from a variety of sources to reveal a leader of epic character. He was a warrior, an orator, a benefactor, and a visionary who helped found the city that bears his name, Seattle, the largest city in the world named after a Native American.

Chief Seattle’s vision was ambitious: a prosperous, multiracial city. But toward the end of Seattle’s life, he saw that vision become a tragedy. In the current century, is Seattle the city edging any closer to the vision of Seattle the man? Buerge explores this complex figure to uncover how one man’s story still shapes the identity of the city.

Buerge, a historian, teacher, and writer, has been researching the pre- and early history of the City of Seattle since the mid-1970s. He has published fourteen books of history and biography. Buerge’s latest book, Chief Seattle and the Town that Took His Name, is the first biography of Chief Seattle intended for adults.

Jun 15 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Meet at the north end of Roxhill Park (corner of 29th Ave SW & SW Barton St), across from Westwood Village Shopping Center. RSVP email TreeAmbassador@seattle.gov

Tree Ambassadors team up with Seattle City Light Arboriculturist Heidi Narte to explore some great examples of neighborhood tree care, including how to spot minor issues before they become larger problems. Heidi will provide tips and expertise for choosing the right tree species for various landscape conditions with an emphasis on avoiding impacts to nearby powerlines. Enjoy learning about a diversity of urban trees that help keep our city healthy and beautiful. Please note – this walk is approximately one mile long and includes moderate to steep hills.

The walk is sponsored by ‘Trees for Seattle’ a division of the Seattle Department of Utilities.
