Nighttime low-tide beach walks @ Constellation Park, Alki
Jan 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join trained volunteer Beach Naturalists at South Alki/Constellation Park on the following dates this year for a free guided exploration at very low tide.

Explore the beach during winter nighttime low tides with Beach Naturalist staff and volunteers. Discover what creatures we see on the beach at this time of year. Dress for the weather (bundle up!) and for tide pooling: boots, hats, gloves and a good flashlight are musts.

Sunday, January 28, 7 pm–9pm

Beach etiquette:
While on the beach, please remember:
~ Walk carefully; there’s life beneath your feet!
~ Touch gently with one wet finger.
~ Observe animals where they are and please avoid picking them up.
~ Please only move rocks that are small enough to be moved with one hand and return them to the position in which you found them.
~ Please only remove trash from the beach, nothing else. Many of our beaches are protected by law.

Save the Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council @ Uptown Espresso
May 30 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

We’ll be blunt–we don’t want GSNC to go away, but that is what will happen if we don’t find new blood. We think there are still plenty of good reasons to have a council, but after a good long run of being involved for 7+ years, all five of the current Executive Committee volunteers are ready to move on after a short transition period.

We will be hosting an informal coffee chat on Wednesday, May 30, to answer questions and share information with those curious about what it would take to continue the council. We would hate to see our banner, marketing materials, online accounts (like the one used to send this message), and website go to waste, so please consider joining us to meet a few like-minded folks–and bring a friend or neighbor!

When: 7 pm on Wednesday, May 30

Where: Uptown Espresso in the Alaska Junction, 4301 SW Edmunds (look for our sign)

**Interested but can’t make it? Please reply to gsncouncil@gmail.com with your contact information, and we will be in touch.**

Please consider: It might seem like GSNC’s work is done, now that the Genesee Hill School has been built and is operating successfully. However, we have at least a few issues affecting our neighborhood in the very near future–and you might know of others:

Support the Urban Homestead Foundation in their (daunting) quest to raise an additional $250K by December 2018 to purchase the old substation property at 50th & Dakota (across from the school) for a community space. If UHF cannot raise the money, the parcels will be sold for development.

Have group input to Seattle Parks during the public process scheduled for THIS FALL on development plans for the vacant land at 48th & Charlestown. GSNC was instrumental in saving this land for public use.

Have a group voice on the Sound Transit alternatives for bringing light rail to the Alaska Junction.

???

GSNC is also a wonderful group for hosting “get to know your neighbor” events (another Ice Cream Social, anyone?) to build community.

Thanks for considering this opportunity to get to know some of your neighbors and make a difference in our community!

EC Hughes playground build
Jun 2 @ 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Roxhill Elementary invites you (yes, you!) to help us build our new playground at our new school — the renovated E.C. Hughes Elementary — on Saturday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We need a total of 60 people to get the project done. Currently, we have 30.

Sign up here: http://signup.com/go/HswhdyT.

Two shifts are available and no experience is necessary. We’ll have tools, refreshments and trained supervisors from PlayCreation to help us put together and install equipment. Lunch will also be provided.

We are working on making child care available on site. Children under age 17 may not be within the build-site. Students/children between 14 and 17 eligible for Service Learning Hours may assist with projects outside of the build-site under direct supervision of an adult.

We need two shifts of 30 people each.

Shift one: 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Shift two: 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All community members are welcome.

We’ll also share more information soon on another community work day to move engineered wood chips in place. The new playground for Roxhill students at E.C. Hughes will be open to the public in the fall. This project has been made possible by a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund grant.

Questions? Contact Friends of Roxhill Elementary at friendsofroxhill@gmail.com.

The walk begins at Ercolini Park at 48th Ave and Alaska St. We will take a leisurely walk down the tree-lined streets telling stories about different species of trees and pointing easy ways by which they can be identified. After winding around several blocks, the walk ends at the junction of Charlestown St and 48th Ave.

You are invited! Come All Around the World with us!

Thanks to the community support of Sanislo Elementary’s auction last year, we kicked our $5,000 goal to the curb and raised $15,000!

This windfall provided a mindfulness program, increased teacher stipends, created a ‘book fair bucks’ program and is affording scholarships to kids in need so they can participate in after-school enrichment! YOU, yes YOU, helped make this happen!

Let’s do it again!

Our annual auction is just around the corner and we hope you can join us once again in supporting educational equity.

Details:

– All Around the World Auction

– Saturday, June 2nd from 6 pm-10 pm

– Alki Masonic Center, 4736 40th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98116

– Silent Auction

– Dinner and TWO Drink Tickets Included!

– A special performance by Seattle Kokon Taiko Japanese Drummers, a DJ, Dancing and more!

You can reserve your tickets online, or, if you can’t make it but would like to donate, you can do that through the link below as well.

Donations to our auction make a significant impact in the education of our kids. With over 70% of our families living in poverty, our school community simply cannot raise these essential funds alone. We hope to see you there!

Haunted Hike

Saturday, October 13, 2018

Kiwanis Schoenwald Park

16030 Sylvester Road SW

Burien, WA

(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)

5:30-8:30 pm

Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.

Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.

And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.

‘Like’ screening at Seattle Lutheran High School
Oct 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

First showing in the area of the screening LIKE.

A one-hour documentary about the impact of social media on our lives.

Seattle Lutheran High School invites you to a free screening of LIKE. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.

IndieFlix goal for this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other. (Go here) to view the official trailer of the documentary.

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings

We strongly encourage everyone to renew or start a new membership for only $15 per person.

Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement
