Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Ethical Trade Sale @ Walmesley Center
Nov 18 @ 9:30 am – 1:00 pm

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s annual Catholic Relief Services Ethical Trade Sale is coming up on Sunday, November 18 from 9:30 am-1:00 pm in the Walmesley Center (7000 35th Ave SW).

We live in an era of unprecedented economic interdependence. Ethical Trade seeks to change the ways in which conventional trade often leaves behind the most vulnerable people. By buying Ethical Trade, you support the efforts of skilled farmers and artisans working to break the cycle of poverty and to build stronger communities. Employers also assure that workers are treated with dignity and that forced labor is not part of the supply chain.

At the sale, you’ll find unique gift items, including chocolates, Advent calendars, nativities, crosses, holiday and home décor, scarves, ornaments, baskets, and much more. In addition to Ethical Trade items, you’ll find: holiday cards from Noel House (a Catholic Community Services shelter for homeless women), tasty treats sold by the Pre-K and 3rd grade classes to benefit WestSide Baby, Tanzanian rosaries and batiks items from Maryknoll, Catholic lip and beard balms benefiting youth ministry, Purpose Jewelry made by women who escaped Human Trafficking, and Olivewood Items from the Holy Land. While you browse, be sure to sample free Fair Trade coffee provided by Pura Vida.

Proceeds go to Catholic Relief Services and OLG’s efforts to bring Fair Trade coffee and tea to our events.

West Seattle’s second annual Track Friday @ Hiawatha Playfield
Nov 23 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

P3 Running and West Seattle Runner are excited to bring Track Friday back to West Seattle! Track Friday is a community-based movement to mobilize people to support charitable giving. Participants run laps on a nearby track to raise awareness and funds for causes that they care about. Track Friday is held the day after Thanksgiving to encourage people to reunite with old and new friends, burn off some Thanksgiving Day calories, and put a little love and giving spirit back into a day that has become synonymous with commercialism.

Michele Pettinger, the founder of P3 Running, is raising money for the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation as her mom is living with the disease. Her friend, Fes Naqvi who learned of Track Friday last year, became involved and is raising money for The Butterfly Fund, a non-profit that helps families who have children (0-18) who have a catastrophic life altering medical condition or event.

We understand that you may have a charity that you feel strongly about, so you are able to fundraise for your chosen charity on Track Friday as well! You can do so by simply joining the West Seattle Track Friday 2018 Team.

We will be at Hiawatha Track and Playfield the morning after Thanksgiving from 9 to 11. Invite your friends and family to join – walk 1 mile, 10 minutes, 10 miles, 2 hours, whatever you feel driven to do! Check in with our table to log your miles! We will have hot chocolate, coffee, and some treats, too.

For anyone who participates in the event, 10% of your purchases at West Seattle Runner that day will be donated to the funds. Simply pick up a token from our table at the park to present at the store when purchasing.

70-person choir, now in its 8th season, is led by artistic director Deeji Killian, a former Seattle Opera
soloist with a theater and dance background. The Northwest Firelight Chorale, who performs all music
memorized, is known for its innovative staging, choreography and expressive performances that provide
an exhilarating experience for its audiences.

The choir has performed at the Northwest Folklife Festival, headlined twice at the Leavenworth Tree
Lighting Ceremony, and opened for famed Irish tenor Emmet Cahill on his last two U.S. tours. The group
also performs at least two outreach concerts per program at senior living facilities to bring music and
healing to those who cannot easily attend its regular concerts.

The choir has embarked on three European Concert tours, most recently this past summer when it
enthralled audiences in France, Belgium and Ireland. In addition to fulfilling its mission to share
soul-stirring music, the choir donated all proceeds from its performances to local charities within the
regions it visited.

Restorative Justice and Healing @ Youngstown Theater
Jan 21 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Join us for Restorative Justice and Healing, our MLK Day of Service event in partnership with United Way of King County. Childcare and community dinner are provided.

In honoring Dr. King on this day of service, DNDA will engage Delridge and surrounding communities in constructive conversation about how race and justice influence each other in modern-day America. In examining what it means to have justice, this event will bring together neighbors of all ethnicities and races to bridge our differences and communicate through a restorative justice approach.

Utilizing the peacemaking circle, participants will engage in a non-hierarchical discussion and learn through the collective wisdom embedded in the stories and lived experiences of all participants.

This event will include a screening of the film Healing Justice, which explores the causes and consequences of the U.S. justice system and its effect on marginalized communities.

Local service-based organizations will be invited to participate and advocate for the resources they provide—including organizations like Hate Free Delridge and Young Women Empowered. Following the event, all participants and volunteers will be invited to continue discussing over a community dinner.

The Opposite of Worry–Playful Parenting in Anxious Times @ Jerry M. Brockey Center at South Seattle College
Feb 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

SSC Cooperative Preschools presents: The Opposite of Worry–Playful Parenting in Anxious Times.

Whether it’s the fear provoked by the monster in the closet or the dread that arises from new social situations, school, or sports, anxiety can be especially challenging and traumatizing for children. And since anxiety has a mind of its own, logic and reassurance often fail, leaving parents increasingly frustrated about how to help.

Dr. Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., is the author of Playful Parenting and The Opposite of Worry. He will discuss simple, effective strategies that build connection and dampen anxiety through fun, play, and empathy.

Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases Class
Mar 11 @ 6:00 pm – 8:15 pm

Join us to learn about eliminating Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases. These conditions may be happening due to nutritional deficiencies, stress and lifestyle things (like breathing rubbing alcohol all the time), toxins, viruses, and inflammatory foods (such as gluten and nightshades), etc. Health conditions can ramp up your feelings of stress, and treatments that take into account all of the factors that affect you give you greater relief.

Miranda is here is help you with all of this. She strives to help you heal without drugs or surgeries. Her focus is on identifying the sources of your discomfort or illness and designing the most effective treatment strategy.

Both acupuncture and Nutrition Response Testing recognize that the human body is a naturally self-healing organism. Often the combination of nutritional support and acupuncture treatments give the body what is required for healing.

Arrive at 6:30pm for food and conversation. Class starts punctually at 7:00pm.

(Press the Alexandar button–code 087. You will be buzzed in. Take the elevator to the 8th floor rooftop deck lounge.)

Intersections Festival @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Mar 21 @ 2:00 pm

Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance will be happening for the second year, this March 21-24, 2019 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in the Delridge neighborhood. Intersections showcases performers in improv, sketch, stand-up, burlesque, storytelling, spoken word, music, theatre, and dance; however, it doesn’t end there.Intersections remains committed to its focus on equity, inclusion, and representation. “Seattle is a diverse city,” says Jekeva Phillips, one member of the all-womxn team, “Why are we only seeing the same faces and hearing the same voices?” Phillips (who is featured in City Arts Magazine’s 2018 Future List) was approached about the project by Natasha Ransom, and Kinzie Shaw of FEELINGS, an Improv duo which aims to amplify intersectional feminism in the face of a white-cis-hetero patriarchy.

The four-day festival will feature a myriad of comedy-related acts from Seattle’s best and brightest POC, Queer, Trans, non-binary, and neurodiverse performers. Each show is a different experience loaded with a variety of acts. No show in the festival will be the same, so the Intersections team strongly encourages patrons to be a part of it all. “We are so excited to be in the audience for this festival,” Say co-founders Natasha Ransom and Kinzie Shaw “The talent is just unbelievably good and we want to soak as much of it in as possible.”

Don’t miss our Giving Party, coming up Saturday March 9th from 2-4pm at Capitol Cider. It’s completely free to attend! For more information about the festival, like Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance on Facebook or visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

At the play area: 6920 34th Ave SW

This play area improvement project relocates the existing play area to the south open lawn area providing ADA access and increased safety by making the play area more visible from the street. The new play area size increases from 1,280 sf to 5,260 sf and upgrades it to our standard size for a community center. The new play equipment features swings, slides and many climbable features. The park features a rolling hill with net climber, and an overhead climbing structure. In addition to the play elements the project incorporates two new seating areas, one adjacent to the play area and another in the location of the old play area. In partnership with the Seattle Greenways Initiative, the project incorporates a bike path that connects the play area and Walt Hundley Playfield to a future Greenway proposed by SDOT at 34th Ave SW. The location of the old play area will be restored to an informal open lawn as requested by the community.
