King Richard II has a short and troubled reign; he’s often indecisive and at other times abrupt and arbitrary, not always good ways to win friends and allies. His clumsy handling of a dispute between two Dukes, one his cousin, splits the kingdom and sets Richard on the path to downfall. It’s the first part of a tetralogy following Richard II and his immediate successors, Henry IV and Henry V.

Twelfth Night Productions will be flying the “Freak Flag” in the Alaska Junction on August 5th between 10am and 10:30 am. Join us as the cast performs a short snippet from one of the most popular songs in our upcoming production of SHREK THE MUSICAL. The cast will perform 30 seconds of “Freak Flag” in the middle of the intersection during a few “all walk” cycles at the corner of Alaska and California on August 5th.

Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.
“SHREK THE MUSICAL is sweet and busy, nice and big, and, every so often, extremely lovable,” writes Newsday.

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is proud to present SHREK THE MUSICAL.
“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.
“SHREK THE MUSICAL is sweet and busy, nice and big, and, every so often, extremely lovable,” writes Newsday. This production will be performed at West Seattle High School Theater, August 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 and August 13, 19 and 20 at 3:00. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at West Seattle High School Theater, 3000 California Ave SW, an hour before the show on performance days. You’re invited to a special night out with Killer Whale Tales, a grassroots nonprofit that’s been hard at work for 13 years right here in West Seattle.
Killer Whale Tales is empowers youth to protect Puget Sound by educating them about our beloved orca population. Our program brings environmental science directly into the classroom, at no cost to schools. In the past 13 years we’ve reached over 100,000 students!
Join us Saturday, September 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at C&P Coffee in West Seattle for a unique opportunity as an adult to immerse yourself in the same experience our kids have in the program! Founder Jeff Hogan will deliver his interactive presentation and guests are invited to learn about the resident killer whales that call Puget Sound home. It’s an urgent time to talk about our orcas – as environmental protections face a precarious future.
Come relax, have a drink and connect with Killer Whale Tales. The event is free but donations are welcomed. Please RSVP at Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/night-out-with-killer-whale-tales-tickets-37660069281

West Seattle High School‘s drama department presentation:
Reimagined in glorious iambic pentameter, William Shakespeare’s Star Wars will astound and edify Rebels and Imperials alike. Return once more to a galaxy far, far away with this sublime retelling of George Lucas’s epic Star Wars in the style of the immortal Bard of Avon. The saga of a wise (Jedi) knight and an evil (Sith) lord, of a beautiful princess held captive and a young hero coming of age, Star Wars abounds with all the valor and villainy of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. ’Tis a tale told by fretful droids, full of faithful Wookiees and fearsome Stormtroopers, signifying…pretty much everything.
E-mail tickets@westsidedrama.com for reservations – $10 ticket with reservation, $15 at the door.

Many community members, from organizations to individuals, work hard to keep Longfellow Creek healthy and accessible. Twenty-five years ago, two community plans laid out a vision for improved access to Longfellow creek. The Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail was developed by neighbors in partnership with government, businesses, non-profits, and schools. Formal tours and stewardship opportunities—like planting trees and monitoring water quality and salmon—provide hands-on connections to the Creek. Many schools in the area participate in arts, environmental education, and other programs along the Creek.
Longfellow Creek is a natural link among communities throughout Delridge, High Point, and Westwood neighborhoods. While many consider it a natural wonder, the Creek’s benefit to people, plants, and animals can be hidden from view. To bring light to Longfellow Creek’s contributions, the City of Seattle and community partners are hosting a celebration of the creek and we want you to join!
Celebrate 25+ years at the Creek
Bring your neighbors, friends, and family to celebrate over 25 years of community engagement with Longfellow Creek on November 5, 2017. The fun will kick off at the corner of 28th Ave SW and SW Dakota St* and run from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. All ages are encouraged to come participate in activities like exploring the Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge, caring for garden beds, creating a postcard inspired by Longfellow Creek, looking inside a salmon, and enjoying guided nature walks.
Please RSVP at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LongfellowCreek
Questions? Email Sheryl.Shapiro@Seattle.gov or call (206) 615-1443.
*In case of heavy rain, the celebration will be relocated to the Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106).Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge
Let your imagination soar when you see the giant salmon bones and 16-foot-tall dragonfly—two copper sculptures on the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail.
Postcards from the Creek
Meet your creek is an art project by Vaughn Bell, an artist who lives in the creek watershed. Create unique, hand-made postcards based on your observations and understanding of Longfellow Creek. You will get the chance to mail the postcard to a friend or loved one, or to donate it to the postcard archive which may be displayed in the community. Images of the postcards will be shared online at the Meet Your Creek blog.
Salmon: Look inside
You may know how a fish swims, but do you know how it eats, breathes, and reproduces? You’ll discover the swimming, eating, breathing, and reproducing systems—and you can touch them (if you want to)!
Nature Walk
Local naturalists will guide you through the park and open spaces on a flat, wide trail. See and learn about the creek, salmon, and the wide variety of plants and their historical uses.

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is excited to announce the return of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show”, playing this December at Kenyon Hall. Based the classic 1946 Frank Capra film, playwright Joe Landry’s take on “It’s a Wonderful Life,” comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast as the ensemble of characters bring the town of Bedford Falls to the stage. You will feel the magic as we return to the fateful Christmas Eve when George Bailey contemplates ending his life before he realizes the difference he makes in the lives of others. “No man is a failure who has friends.”
“If you close your eyes during this production you won’t miss a beat because all of the components – the sound effects, the organ, the commercials, and the Mistletones – work together successfully to recreate the live radio experience of the 1940’s and 50’s.” Drama in the Hood.
This live radio show will be performed at historic Kenyon Hall, one of West Seattle’s favorite venues, December 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 pm,
and December 10 and 17 at 3 pm.
Bring the family and make this a holiday tradition! Tickets are available online at Brown PaperTickets, and at Kenyon Hall, 7904 35th Ave. SW, Seattle WA, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $20 for adults and $18 for students & seniors.

The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites around the region where the public may view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment by establishing a network of viewing sites along the whales’ trails through the Salish Sea and the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest. Our goals are to increase awareness that our marine waters are home to orcas and other species; connect visitors to orcas, other marine wildlife and their habitat; inspire stewardship and build community; promote land-based whale watching. Our over-arching goal is to ensure the southern resident orcas do not go extinct.
The Whale Trail provides simple, powerful, and long-lasting reminders to visitors and residents alike that orcas and other whales live in our waters. Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 22 million people each year. Our near-term goals are to add a site in every coastal county in Washington, and around Vancouver Island, throughout the orcas’ range. Together, we will turn the tide for the whales!
The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State.

“Peerless”
By Jiehae Park
Directed by Sara PorkalobJanuary 18 – February 11, 2018
Thursdays–Saturdays at 7:30 pm
Sundays at 3 pmAsian-American twin sisters M and L will do whatever it takes to win the one coveted affirmative action spot at “The College.” But when the thick acceptance envelope falls into the hands of D, a white male colleague who is 1/16th Native American, the sisters will stop at nothing to take back what is rightfully theirs – and eliminate anyone who stands in their way. Jiehae Park’s clever and incisive adaptation of Macbeth explores how the drive to succeed can become an all-consuming – and deadly – obsession.
“With its staccato rhythms, short scenes, and farcical characters, unlike any you’ve ever seen before onstage, it’s hard to know how to characterize this play, except to say that it’s unexpectedly wonderful.” – The Arts Fuse
Tickets are available online at or at the Box Office: 206-938-0339.
This year’s student-directed play is “Killjoy” – Kimberly Le is the director. Performances are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, January 10, 11, 12 at the WSHS Theater, 7:30 pm, $10 at the door.

Join trained volunteer Beach Naturalists at South Alki/Constellation Park on the following dates this year for a free guided exploration at very low tide.
Explore the beach during winter nighttime low tides with Beach Naturalist staff and volunteers. Discover what creatures we see on the beach at this time of year. Dress for the weather (bundle up!) and for tide pooling: boots, hats, gloves and a good flashlight are musts.
Sunday, January 28, 7 pm–9pm
Beach etiquette:
While on the beach, please remember:
~ Walk carefully; there’s life beneath your feet!
~ Touch gently with one wet finger.
~ Observe animals where they are and please avoid picking them up.
~ Please only move rocks that are small enough to be moved with one hand and return them to the position in which you found them.
~ Please only remove trash from the beach, nothing else. Many of our beaches are protected by law.

Tickets are available online at or at the Box Office: 206-938-0339.

Twelfth Night Productions is proud to present NEXT TO NORMAL.
An unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness.

NEXT TO NORMAL takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.
This production will be performed at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, February 16, 17, 23, and 24 at 7:30 pm and February 18 and 25 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at Youngstown, 4408 Delridge Way SW, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $20 for adults and $18 for students & seniors.

Seattle Audubon will be at Ounces from 1-4 to celebrate and raise funds for our brand new Nature Camp location in West Seattle.
We’ll have John the Falconer with LIVE birds from 1–3 p.m., Nature Camp activities, a food truck, and (of course) beer!
If you’re a parent with a child interested in camp, we’ll have staff on site ready to help fill out registrations and/or scholarship applications. If you just love beer (or free hot cider) and birds, you’ll be able to meet and take pictures with the birds, and participate in fun activities!

Wednesday, 2/28, Seattle Audubon is hosting a community meeting at C&P Coffee from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Seattle Audubon has made significant investment in two new program areas — communications and community engagement. We heard from our community that they want to better understand what we’re up to and how we do our work, and we want to get better at making and sustaining connections with our members. We know we have work to do to engage with our constituents across our chapter’s area, which includes more than the city of Seattle.
In 2018, we’re launching a series of community meetings, what we’re calling “listening sessions,” designed to help us spend more time with and better get to know communities across our geography. We hope that you’ll come and join us to hear about our 2018 plans, talk about how you can engage in that work, and primarily, we want to better get to know our West Seattle community and the conservation issues on your minds. We’re here to help and we look forward to the conversation.

Hir
By Taylor Mac
Directed by Jennifer Zeyl
Co-produced with Intiman TheatreFeb 28 – Mar 25, 2018
Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm
Sundays at 3:00 pmSomewhere in the suburbs, Isaac has returned from the wars to help take care of his ailing father, only to enter a different warzone: a household in revolt. His mother, liberated from an oppressive marriage – with Isaac’s newly out transgender sibling as her ally – is on a crusade to dismantle the patriarchy. But in Taylor Mac’s sly, subversive comedy HIR, annihilating the past doesn’t always free you from it.
“…sensational—in all senses of the word…[an] audacious and uproarious black comedy…Mac has his own gloriously skewed vision of the toxins fouling the American family from within, and in its avowedly loopy way HIR reflects current concerns about the decline of the middle class, as well as the trauma war veterans endure…brilliant writing…” —New York Times
Tickets may be purchased online at www.artswest.org, by phone at 206.938.0339, or at the Box Office Thurs.–Sat. 2–7:30 pm.

Pints of Ales & Killer Whale Tales
A kid- (and dog-) friendly event at Optimism Brewing Company1 pm to 3 pm, March 31, 2018
1158 BroadwayJoin West Seattle-based Killer Whale Tales at Capitol Hill’s Optimism Brewing Company on March 31, 2018 from 1 pm to 3 pm. Killer Whale Tales is a Seattle-based environmental education non-profit. Our program uses storytelling and field-based science to inspire students to take an active role in the conservation of Pacific Northwest killer whales and their habitat.
At Pints of Ales & Killer Whale Tales, our Founder, Jeff Hogan, will deliver an abbreviated version of our interactive program. You’ll learn about the killer whales that live in our Puget Sound waters and what we can do to help protect them and the ecosystem they live in. This is an urgent time for both as environmental protections themselves are endangered.
Come and join us! This event is free and fun for all ages. We will provide some light snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments. Beer will be available for purchase at the bar and Chavoya’s Hot Dogs will also be available for purchase. (Beer and hot dog sales do not benefit KWT).
Children and dogs are welcome at Optimism Brewing Company, so bring your friends and family

Twelfth Night Productions is proud to participate in Seattle Celebrates Shakespeare with Twelfth Night.
Set in New Orleans in the 1930s, Twelfth Night is filled with a sense of decadence and drama. The play opens on Olivia in a once wealthy manor house, now on the decline in the absence of her father and brother. On the other side of town is love interest Orsino’s bizarre house, stuffed with icons and symbols of “Ideal Love.” Another, would-be suitor, Malvolio inhabits his own world that needs order and eschews all things modern, including clothing and music.
Into this world comes a strong, earnest, no-nonsense “Pollyanna,” Viola, with her true belief in right and wrong and her basic belief in the goodness of humans.
The play complicates, then wonderfully untangles, these relationships.
Jazz and blues are woven into our version of this timeless story, adding a sexy, dreamy vibe.
This production will be performed at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, April 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 7:30 pm and April 15 and 22 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at Youngstown, 4408 Delridge Way SW, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $20 for adults and $18 for students & seniors.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 20, 21, and 22, at 7:30 – The Portable Dorothy Parker
The year is 1943; the place, New York City. Dorothy Parker—famed for her presence at the legendary Algonquin Round Table—is in her hotel room. Viking Press is about to publish a collection of her poems and short stories, and she must make the selections before an editor shows up at her door. As she sorts through her works, she reminisces about her life: her famous friends (Lillian Hellman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and especially, Ernest Hemingway), the wits of the Round Table (Alexander Woollcott, Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman), the founding of The New Yorker, and her many loves and heartbreaks.
The Portable Dorothy Parker is the labor of love by playwright Annie Lux, director Lee Costello, and actress Margot Avery. In addition to its recent performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the play has been presented at festivals and venues around the United States, including the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City, the Adobe Rose Theatre in Santa Fe, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. This will be the play’s first performance in the Pacific Northwest, and we’re honored that Kenyon Hall has been chosen to host this marvelous production.
This is the type of tightly written, keenly directed, subtly performed piece that is a pleasure to breathe in.

At Kenyon Hall:
Saturday, April 28, at 7:30 – I Can Get It For You Wholesale
The Seattle Jewish Theater Company returns with the 1962 Broadway musical that launched the careers of both Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould. A dozen talented local performers, directed by the company’s artistic director, Art Feinglass, bring this entertaining production to life.
The critical and popular hit is the story of an ambitious young businessman artfully clawing his way to the top of the garment industry in 1930s New York. The show explores the perils of ambition and the price of success. Contrasting the swinging, jazzy rhythms of big city business with the earthy, traditional sounds of the characters’ Eastern European Jewish origins, I Can Get It For You Wholesale captures the energy and promise of a pivotal time in American history.
For more information, please visit www.seattlejewishtheater.com.
On April 28, front reserved table seats are $14. Row seating is $12 general and $10 seniors. With a reservation, row seating is only $10 general and $8 seniors. Elementary, middle, and high school students are $5.
To make a reservation, please e-mail kenyonhall@earthlink.net. You’ll receive an e-mail confirming your reservation.

Thu, Jul 26 @ 7:00 pm at Lincoln Park
Sat, Jul 28 @ 7:00 pm at Lincoln ParkContinuing the story line we began last year with Richard II, we look at the reign of King Henry IV. His reign is not going well, with war in Wales and Scotland and friction with the Percy family. In addition, his son and heir, Prince Hal of Wales, bails on his responsibilities at Court to hang out in taverns with a gang of ne’er-do-wells, chief of whom is Sir John Falstaff, a drunkard who, despite his charisma, is a bad influence.

Sun, Jul 22 @ 3:00 pm at Lincoln Park
Fri, Jul 27 @ 7:00 pm at Lincoln ParkThe Swashbuckling story of The Three Musketeers will delight audiences in Seattle-area parks this summer.
“We have some tremendously talented Stage combatants in Seattle and I look forward to setting them loose,” says Erin Day, GreenStage artistic director who loves the intrigue and sleight of hand that Dumas brings to his tales. She has a particular fondness for The Three Musketeers.
“The characters are all huge and dynamic,” Day says. “I like the juxtaposition of d’Artagnan’s innocence, honor and nobility in contrast to most of the other characters; his youth and eagerness to make his way contrasted to the complacency or avarice with which others move through the world.”
Filled with dueling, intrigue, clandestine love, dueling, political scheming, and dueling, The Three Musketeers has been a favorite for generations! The Musketeers have appeared on stage, the big screen, on television—even in cartoons!—and in video and board games. We think they’ll play especially well outdoors in the parks this summer. En garde!
HAMLET
July 22, Sunday at 2 p.m. – Roxhill ParkSpoiler alert! In this play, nearly everyone who isn’t already dead at the start dies by the end! And yet, there is no funnier or wiser play about death than this, perhaps Shakespeare’s best. Performed by the vibrant young cast of nationally awarded Young Shakespeare Workshop’s Revolving Company.
