Haunted Hike @ Kiwanis Schoenwald Park
Oct 13 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Haunted Hike

Saturday, October 13, 2018

Kiwanis Schoenwald Park

16030 Sylvester Road SW

Burien, WA

(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)

5:30-8:30 pm

Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.

Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.

And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.

Feet First Walk & Talk: West Seattle Light Rail
OCTOBER 16, 2018 @ 4:30 PM — 6:30 PM

Explore potential sites for the West Sesattle Sound Transit Link light rail stations

Learn about site locations and discuss options during this free tour and post-gathering at Ounces Taproom

Explore potential West Seattle Sound Transit Link light rail stations with King County Council Chair Joe McDermott, Sound Transit officials, and community leaders.

Feet First is pleased to host this one-of-kind opportunity to connect community members with local leaders and public officials in a forum for open discussion about pedestrian safety and accessibility in the community. We will visit Link light rail station alternatives at West Seattle Junction, Avalon, and Delridge.* Sound Transit is currently evaluating and gathering public input on potential station sites.

The Link light rail site selections will influence West Seattle development over the coming decades, including whether or not people have safe and accessible walkways. We will discuss tradeoffs between the various site alternatives and how to ensure good walking access to the light rail system.

Don’t miss out on the post-Walk & Talk refreshments at Ounces Taproom & Beer Garden! Join us for further discussion, a thirst-quenching selection of Washington beers and delicious food from the Bella M’Briana food truck. Live music at Skylark Café & Club featuring Lauren Davidson in a Benefit Show For Wounded Warriors (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/).

CMA (country music association) artist Lauren Davidson is a New York City/New Jersey based singer-songwriter. Since the age of 10, she has been performing professionally by putting her unique and powerful voice on display. One of Lauren’s greatest joys is being on stage and collaborating with other musicians. Lauren comes from a musical family, singing and performing with her father since childhood and later writing songs together. She continues to co-write with him today in addition to other writers on the music scene.

Lauren is inspired daily by artists of many different genres of music including Contemporary Country, Rock, and Pop. She has become a popular and loved name on the Regional Country scene where she has carved out a niche as an established singer-songwriter.

In 2015, Lauren released her first two singles, “Sometimes,” and “Loaded Gun.” The critically-acclaimed tracks were featured on her debut EP, Hear Me. You can find Lauren Davidson’s songs on all major digital music outlets.

The country singer gives fans everything she’s got when playing numerous venues around the tri-state area. Lauren has opened shows for some of todays biggest country stars including Old Dominion, Justin Moore, LOCASH, and more.

Lauren’s “Loaded Gun” has been exclusively featured on The Boot and was named Nash FM 94.7 Nash Next Top 10 finalist. Her latest release, “I’ll Drink To That,” was named the Digital Journal’s Top 5 Female Country Radio Singles in 2017.

When you think Lauren Davidson, you’ll hear Alanis Morissette with a splash of Carrie Underwood.

West Seattle’s second annual Track Friday @ Hiawatha Playfield
Nov 23 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

P3 Running and West Seattle Runner are excited to bring Track Friday back to West Seattle! Track Friday is a community-based movement to mobilize people to support charitable giving. Participants run laps on a nearby track to raise awareness and funds for causes that they care about. Track Friday is held the day after Thanksgiving to encourage people to reunite with old and new friends, burn off some Thanksgiving Day calories, and put a little love and giving spirit back into a day that has become synonymous with commercialism.

Michele Pettinger, the founder of P3 Running, is raising money for the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation as her mom is living with the disease. Her friend, Fes Naqvi who learned of Track Friday last year, became involved and is raising money for The Butterfly Fund, a non-profit that helps families who have children (0-18) who have a catastrophic life altering medical condition or event.

We understand that you may have a charity that you feel strongly about, so you are able to fundraise for your chosen charity on Track Friday as well! You can do so by simply joining the West Seattle Track Friday 2018 Team.

We will be at Hiawatha Track and Playfield the morning after Thanksgiving from 9 to 11. Invite your friends and family to join – walk 1 mile, 10 minutes, 10 miles, 2 hours, whatever you feel driven to do! Check in with our table to log your miles! We will have hot chocolate, coffee, and some treats, too.

For anyone who participates in the event, 10% of your purchases at West Seattle Runner that day will be donated to the funds. Simply pick up a token from our table at the park to present at the store when purchasing.

Mioposto Dine Out to Cross Out Cancer @ Mioposto Pizzeria Admiral
Feb 26 @ 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Mioposto Admiral is hosting a Dine Out for a local nonprofit called Cross out Cancer next Tuesday, February 26th from 4-10pm. A portion of proceeds from the evening will be donated to the organization. Dine in, take out, delivery via Caviar, and retail sales are all ways people can support.

Cross Out Cancer is a non-profit organization that began in Tampa, Florida, almost three years ago in 2015. It was started by a high school junior, and their mission was to combine their love of cross country with the passion of serving pediatric cancer patients and to bring about awareness of childhood cancer. Fast forward to December 2016, Cross Out Cancer was established in Seattle and was on track to their first race in May of 2017! With a completely student-led board of 20 representatives from high schools across the Greater Seattle area, our board is largely made up of people with a particular interest or connection to childhood cancer.

Our goal is to bring about awareness of pediatric oncology and give high school students the opportunity to impact the members of their community. Our organization has joined with Seattle Children’s Hospital to host an annual public running event to unite the community in a common effort to support families battling cancer in the Seattle area.

Westcrest Park Forest Restoration Work Party / Evento de Restauración en el Bosque del Parque Westcrest @ Westcrest Park
Mar 30 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Join DIRT Corps in revitalizing Westcrest Park. We are working on the parcel of land next to 8th Ave that is overgrown with Himalayan blackberries! It’s up to us and our volunteers to bring it under control!

The beginning of this volunteer event will include a brief weed ID. Then, we will combine knowledge with action as we work to clear this beautiful space of harmful species that overtake the area. Many of you might already have this experience in your own backyard.

Let’s work together to gradually transform and maintain Westcrest Park and make it a great public space for everyone to enjoy. Let us know of any questions, hope to see you out there.

PLEASE RSVP HERE: Westcrest Park Forest Restoration.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Apr 6 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society

See ‘Trickle Down Town’ at Tibbetts @ Tibbetts United Methodist Church
Apr 14 @ 11:30 am

Free movie by local filmmaker – ‘Trickle Down Town’ @ Tibbetts United Methodist Church
Sunday, April 14 @ 11:30 am

This 113 minute movie by local filmmaker Tomasz Biernacki is a thought-provoking documentary about the homeless crisis in Seattle. There is deft interweaving of in-depth stories of community members who are living the crisis on the streets with interviews of political leaders and community advocates, vivid images of the current state of affairs and a poignant examination of the roots of homelessness in the region. Biernacki paints a picture of a city struggling to come to grips with an unprecedented emergency.

You’ll find this production offers an alternative viewpoint to recent broadcasts and through the crisis it finds a few glimmers of hope. It features Camp Second Chance in West Seattle, a community that is successfully stabilizing the lives of its residents so they can work on moving forward.

Tibbetts is located at 3940 41st Ave SW. Light snacks will be available during the movie; we welcome all and encourage you to invite your family and friends!

The filmmaker has made Trickle Down Town available for free to any Puget Sound organization or group that wants to host a private or public screening. If you’re unable to attend the showing at Tibbetts or would like to see the trailer and more information, go to the Filmmaker’s website http://www.pechara.com/

May 4 @ 8:00 am

Weekly free group run. Meet at the shop at 8 am.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
May 4 @ 10:00 am

Guided Bug Walk @ (see listing)
May 4 @ 10:00 am

Expert Amber Chiozza of Scarabs, a local entomological society, will teach us about insects and spiders living in our beautiful West Duwamish Greenbelt.

Meet at the trailhead across the street from 4715 21st Avenue SW. Bring water, sturdy shoes or boots and be prepared for the elements. The walk will take about 1.5 hours.

Sponsored by the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails Group, www.wdgtrails.org. For more information contact us at wdgtrails@gmail.com.

CHANGE this week only!

We are doing our Saturday group run at Lincoln Park. They are shutting down California Ave right in front of our shop that morning in order to remove the crane at PCC. We want to make getting to running group and parking easier for y’all! So we thought we would take this opportunity for a field trip!!! Please comment on how far you plan to run if you would like us to pre-plan your route for you that day! We will meet in the first big parking lot and gather there for announcements and to give routes etc. Please be prepared to carry your own keys as we will not have our key basket on site. Furthermore, do not leave valuables in your car as there have been numerous reports of car break-ins at Lincoln Park.

For those who register in-store that evening, you will enjoy a 10% discount at West Seattle Runner. After the run, all runners and walkers are welcome to join up and head to the Beer Junction for refreshing beverages -both alcoholic and non-alcoholic- (Might I share, they have a very rich root beer!) and social time. It is always nice to get a chance to chat with one another and our pub social outing is long overdue! Seems like a perfect excuse to get together. Of note: the Beer Junction supports both the Loop the Lupe and the Float Dodger by giving generously to the beer gardens, allowing larger donations to go to the charities. Memorial Day poppy distribution at WS Thriftway
May 25 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join American Legion Post 160 and ALA Unit 160 this Saturday May 25 and Sunday May 26 at the Morgan Junction Thriftway where members will distribute bright red poppies in honor of our fallen service members. The poppy has become an internationally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. One hundred percent of donations go directly to help local veterans.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

Each year, members of The American Legion family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

Laps with Lou to benefit Make-A-Wish @ Pathfinder K-8 School
May 31 @ 9:00 am – 2:30 pm

Retired Pathfinder K-8 PE teacher Lou Cutler returns to the school for his annual birthday run to raise money for Make-A-Wish – this year, 68 laps since he’s turning 68. His announcement:

Each year, as my birthday approaches, I have a pre-birthday celebration by running/walking the number of laps that correspond to my upcoming birthday. This year I will turn 68, and I will run 68 laps – that’s 11.4 miles! I will be accompanied for much of the run by over 500 students, staff and parents from the Pathfinder Community

The run began as a way for me to be thankful for my own good health while also encouraging my students to be physically active and give back to the community. Over the years, we have raised more than $70,000 for Make-A-Wish and I have no plans of stopping!

On Friday, May 31st, at 9:05 A.M., I will enjoy the best day of my year, as I witness the entire Pathfinder community come together to raise money to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Each year I draw on the bravery and inspiration that I derive from my interactions with Make A Wish kids and families and the fantastic encouragement and support I receive from the Pathfinder community to carry me through the final most difficult miles.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Jun 1 @ 10:00 am

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

Tree Walk @ Roxhill Park, north end
Jun 15 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Meet at the north end of Roxhill Park (corner of 29th Ave SW & SW Barton St), across from Westwood Village Shopping Center. RSVP email TreeAmbassador@seattle.gov

Tree Ambassadors team up with Seattle City Light Arboriculturist Heidi Narte to explore some great examples of neighborhood tree care, including how to spot minor issues before they become larger problems. Heidi will provide tips and expertise for choosing the right tree species for various landscape conditions with an emphasis on avoiding impacts to nearby powerlines. Enjoy learning about a diversity of urban trees that help keep our city healthy and beautiful. Please note – this walk is approximately one mile long and includes moderate to steep hills.

The walk is sponsored by ‘Trees for Seattle’ a division of the Seattle Department of Utilities.
