Courtyard dedication and film screening @ Providence Mount St. Vincent
Aug 16 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Providence Mount St. Vincent on Aug. 16, 2018, will dedicate its outdoor courtyard to Dyke R. Turner, the architect whose passion and vision helped bring The Mount’s Intergenerational Learning Center (ILC) to life.

“Dyke had an amazing vision for what this could be – a place where children and seniors came together to play, sing, dance, work on projects, enjoy each other’s company and learn from each other,” said Molly Swain, executive director of the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation. “Without Dyke’s vision and perseverance, I’m not sure our world-renowned childcare center would be what it is today.”

Turner, who died in December 2016, was one of the key visionaries behind The Mount’s effort to bring children and seniors together in a building that shares a license as both a childcare center and a nursing home. He not only grasped the concept but did the research and had the vision to make it happen.

The ILC this year celebrates its 27th year of smiles, wonder and magic, serving more than 1,000 children who have benefitted from the care and lessons learned in the daycare and preschool that runs in the middle of a home that serves elderly residents. Although the ILC is not unique (others exist elsewhere), it is incredibly special. Providence Mount St. Vincent was not only one of the first elder care facilities in the country to embrace the concept of serving youngsters and seniors in the same facility, but is also one of the longest-running programs.

Much of the success can be attributed to Turner’s work. Turner started an architectural firm in the 1980s to bring childcare centers to nursing homes. “We very quickly learned that children need their space; elders need their space too,” he said in a 2016 interview. “We looked at The Mount, analyzed all the spaces, opportunities, and planned out every nook and cranny within The Mount that could support any sort of ILC facility.”

Turner and his work partner Jennifer Chapman found that in addition to intentionally planning spaces for seniors and children to be together, something special happened when they spontaneously interacted. “Jennifer and I thought it was a great experiment because every time the residents would come in, the kids would stop, give high-fives, and look at what was going on. We discovered we should plan opportunities for kids and elders to come across each other accidentally. Sometimes it’s better than planned structured activities. Having things happen spontaneously was magic,” Turner said.

The courtyard/children’s playground will be dedicated at 5:15 p.m., followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. Guests are also invited at 4 p.m. to view the documentary, “The Growing Season,” an hour-long film by West Seattle filmmaker Evan Briggs that focuses on the ILC at The Mount. The film has been distributed nationally through Tugg, allowing for easy distribution to interested audiences. The Dyke R. Turner ILC courtyard dedication will be held at Providence Mount St. Vincent, 4831 35th Ave. SW, Seattle. Haunted Hike

Saturday, October 13, 2018

Kiwanis Schoenwald Park

16030 Sylvester Road SW

Burien, WA

(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)

5:30-8:30 pm

Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.

Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.

And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.

Join us for a screening of Healing Justice as we ground ourselves in practices of Restorative Justice. Humanity is in the midst of making a profound transformation, it is time for us to transition from a time of overwhelming strife to one of unity. As the well-being of our society is imperiled, we need to pay more attention to the patterns of our own behavior and actions. Our journey towards personal healing sets the trajectory for cultural healing, which leads to the healing of our world.

as well as how to remove all kinds of invasive species so native
plants can thrive. Afterwards you can walk the trails and explore this

Saturnalia @ West Seattle "Alki" Masonic Center
Jan 19 @ 5:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Join Seattle’s Phantasmagorical Chef [Chef Killian] for a January feast that will make Saturn blush!

Traditionally held in December, we’ve moved the Saturnalia Feast to January so you can enjoy the newer winter holidays with family and recover from your New Year revelry with friends, before diving into the extravaganza of our January Saturnalia.

In honor of the Agricultural Deity, everything you eat this night will be best-of-kind!
Sourced from ethical butchers, local gardens, and small local farms and wineries, every kind of diet and restriction is accommodated. From celiac to halal, Chef Killian is pleased to provide you a meal to remember. “The poet Catullus called Saturnalia ‘the best of days’ I promise to make this dinner one of your best!” Note: the ancient Romans had limited flatware: you will have a spoon and a knife; ample use of your fingers is encouraged.

Restorative Justice and Healing @ Youngstown Theater
Jan 21 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Join us for Restorative Justice and Healing, our MLK Day of Service event in partnership with United Way of King County. Childcare and community dinner are provided.

In honoring Dr. King on this day of service, DNDA will engage Delridge and surrounding communities in constructive conversation about how race and justice influence each other in modern-day America. In examining what it means to have justice, this event will bring together neighbors of all ethnicities and races to bridge our differences and communicate through a restorative justice approach.

Utilizing the peacemaking circle, participants will engage in a non-hierarchical discussion and learn through the collective wisdom embedded in the stories and lived experiences of all participants.

This event will include a screening of the film Healing Justice, which explores the causes and consequences of the U.S. justice system and its effect on marginalized communities.

Local service-based organizations will be invited to participate and advocate for the resources they provide—including organizations like Hate Free Delridge and Young Women Empowered. Following the event, all participants and volunteers will be invited to continue discussing over a community dinner.

Please register here by Jan 18, 2019.

If you’re bringing seeds to share, please bring as much information as you have about your seeds, such as variety, growth habit, and days to maturity. Please – no old seeds or GMO seeds. This event is hosted in partnership with the King County Seed Library.

In addition to seeds, there will be a table of gardening resources as well as gardening books available from the Seattle Public Library for check-out. Kids are welcomed and we will have a coloring activity for them. Terraganics Living offers one-on-on edible gardening expertise year round making “farm fresh” from your home a reality. https://www.terraganicsliving.com/

Terraganics Living manages the King County Seed Library branch in West Seattle for public use. All leftover seeds from the seed swap will help replenish the seed-lending library.

Free community dinner @ High Point Community Center
Mar 17 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Free dinner every Sunday night in West Seattle!

Everyone is welcome at High Point Community Dinner!

We gather, along with our volunteers, every Sunday night to eat dinner together and hear a story about Jesus. With an informal setting that centers around the meal and conversation, everyone is welcome to come just for the meal, or to stay longer to hear the talk and have a chance to discuss with friends.

The dinner is complemented by art and music! We often have an artist doing live paintings, a kids’ art table, and live music.
