Storytelling Festival on Vashon @ Vashon Theatre
Jan 26 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Vashon Wilderness Program (VWP) will host its 13th Annual Storytelling Festival on Sunday, January 26 at 1pm at the Vashon Theatre on Vashon Island. This free, family-friendly event is “for the community, by the community” and will feature nature-based stories–personal, mythic, and ancestral–told by VWP’s seasoned staff and audience members alike.

Storytelling is a core routine at VWP’s nature-immersion programs. Their staff practice oral traditions to inspire the children and instill valuable lessons in wilderness survival, naturalist skills, and community building. VWP students also practice sharing their own stories, both to help deepen their learning journeys and to discover their authentic voices.

Audience members of all ages are invited to bring a prepared 5-minute story, spin a tale in the One-Minute Story-thon, or join the fun, interactive group storytelling improv games.

The Storytelling Festival is best suited for ages 4 and older. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to purchase snacks and sign up for a tellers’ spot.

VWP (a 501c3 non-profit) provides nature immersion programs for people for all ages from Vashon and surrounding Puget Sound communities. To date, VWP has helped nearly 4,500 children, teens, adults, and families connect deeply with themselves, each other, and nature through their transformative nature mentoring programs, camps, workshops, and trainings.

Stakeholder meeting: Roxhill Park
Bog/Longfellow Creek Headwater Restoration Project
Tuesday, February 11th 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Lower Level, SW Teen Life Center, 2801 SW Thistle St, 98126

In a collaborative effort of community, nonprofit organizations, county and city agencies to restore Roxhill Bog’s ecosystem and provide the community with a safe and engaging natural area for recreation and education you are invited to a stakeholder project meeting to learn about this effort, its importance to the health of Longfellow Creek, its salmon and saving of one of the last peat fens in Seattle. Climate change and urbanization have caused Roxhill Bog to degrade to a critical tipping point – if not addressed now, restoration of its natural functions may no longer be feasible.

A hydrology study being conducted by Natural Systems Design is one of the first steps to restore Roxhill Bog’s natural hydrology, enhancing its water quality, improving ecological resiliency and benefiting salmonid recovery in Longfellow Creek and the greater Green-Duwamish basin.

The goal is to revitalize this natural area so it can again contribute to the creek’s health, support one of the most diverse bird populations in the city, enhance environmental education, foster outdoor recreation, improve neighborhood health and safety.

Who Should Attend?
Community leaders, environmental practitioners/professionals, educators, NGOs working within the basin and local area

Agenda

Join us for a midwinter gathering of marine mammal friends and fans in West Seattle. Whale Trail Director Donna Sandstrom will review the current status of the endangered southern resident orcas, and ongoing efforts to protect them.

With the loss of L41, the southern resident population has been reduced to just 72 individuals.
Despite the widespread attention on J, K and L pods, why has so little progress been made?
Donna will also share the Whale Trail’s vision and priorities for 2020. Learn how you can help, and make a difference for the southern residents before it’s too late. The presentation will be followed by an informal gathering of Whale Trail friends and supporters. Everyone is welcome!

Reminder – Whale Trail Photo Contest! We’re sponsoring a social media photo contest until 2/29. Take a picture of your self or your friends at a Whale Trail site, hashtag it #mywhaletrail #location. Follow us on Instagram or Twitter, and post it there. There will be prizes! Check out our website (www.thewhaletrail.org) and social media for details.

About the Speaker

Donna Sandstrom is the Executive Director of The Whale Trail. She founded The Whale Trail in 2008 to build awareness of the southern resident orcas throughout their range. She recently served as a member of Governor Jay Inslee’s Task Force on Southern Resident Killer Whale Recovery, and the Vessel Impacts Working Group that supported it.

In 2002, Donna was a citizen organizer on the effort to return Springer, an orphaned orca, to her pod and native waters. It’s the first and so far, only, successful orca rehabilitation and reunion in history.

Prior to founding The Whale Trail, Donna had a 14-yr career at Adobe Systems, where she was a team and project manager. She attended UC Santa Cruz, where she studied psychobiology. Her first book, a middle-grade non-fiction book about Springer, will be published in Spring 2021 by Kid’s Can Press.

The project includes restoring the old play area site for nature play.

Hiawatha Play Area renovation/relocation meeting @ Hiawatha Community Center
Feb 27 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to participate in the design for the relocation and renovation of the play area at Hiawatha Playfield. Please join the design team at the Hiawatha Community Center from either 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Tot Gym or from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for an evening meeting. Both will be held at Hiawatha Community Center, 2700 California Ave. SW. on Thursday, February 27, 2020.

This is an opportunity for the community to learn about the proposal to demolish and rebuild the play area at Hiawatha Playfield and review design options. Additionally, the community will be asked to participate in a quick survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HiawathaPlayArea2 to help inform the design. The survey will open after the meetings on February 27. Community involvement is essential in developing this new play area and we hope to hear from you.

The goal of this project is to transfer the location of the play area from the north end of the park to the grass area just south of the wading pool. The project includes new play equipment and restoration of the old play area site. The new location will improve visibility and access for all.

We anticipate holding a final Open House in the late spring to present the schematic design.

Funding for this park is provided by the Seattle Park District. The Seattle Park District provides more than $47 million a year in long-term funding to tackle the $267 million major maintenance backlog for Seattle Parks and Recreation as well as other facilities including the Aquarium and Zoo. The Seattle Park District helps improve and rehabilitate community centers, preserves the urban forest, performs day-to-day maintenance of parks and facilities, provides more recreation opportunities for people from underserved communities, supports programs for people of all ages and abilities, and acquires and develops new park land.

For more information or for meeting notification translations, please visit https://www.seattle.gov/parks/about-us/current-projects/hiawatha-play-area-relocation

For questions about the project or if you need an interpreter or accommodations, please contact Ed Pottharst at Ed.pottharst@seattle.gov or 206-386-4232.

Thank you to the Hiawatha Community Center and the Associated Recreation Council (ARC) for their partnership with the community engagement for this project.
