Southwest Stories: South Park, from Farm to Factory
Sunday, September 17, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
South Park Library.
Join South Park resident and author Anna Marti for a lively discussion of this vibrant neighborhood’s unique history, from fishing camps to fertile farmland to today’s distinctive industrial/residential mix. Situated on the Duwamish River, South Park has a rich tradition of farming and industry. It was along these banks that the Duwamish tribe set up fishing camps and grew crops, a practice that continued with generations of farmers who were drawn to the fertile land. With the first land claim in 1851, South Park became home to some of Seattle’s original settlers. Today, its diverse history makes it one of the few Seattle neighborhoods to have both industrial and residential land zones coexisting in the same area.
Anna Marti is a 5th generation Seattlelite who has lived in the South Park Neighborhood for 20 years. She collaborated on a book about the South Park neighborhood in 2006. She continues to find opportunities to celebrate South Park history and the Duwamish River while working to balance the needs of a growing city and the need to restore the Duwamish River.
This program is co-sponsored by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society and The Seattle Public Library. The program is free, and all are welcome.

Many community members, from organizations to individuals, work hard to keep Longfellow Creek healthy and accessible. Twenty-five years ago, two community plans laid out a vision for improved access to Longfellow creek. The Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail was developed by neighbors in partnership with government, businesses, non-profits, and schools. Formal tours and stewardship opportunities—like planting trees and monitoring water quality and salmon—provide hands-on connections to the Creek. Many schools in the area participate in arts, environmental education, and other programs along the Creek.
Longfellow Creek is a natural link among communities throughout Delridge, High Point, and Westwood neighborhoods. While many consider it a natural wonder, the Creek’s benefit to people, plants, and animals can be hidden from view. To bring light to Longfellow Creek’s contributions, the City of Seattle and community partners are hosting a celebration of the creek and we want you to join!
Celebrate 25+ years at the Creek
Bring your neighbors, friends, and family to celebrate over 25 years of community engagement with Longfellow Creek on November 5, 2017. The fun will kick off at the corner of 28th Ave SW and SW Dakota St* and run from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. All ages are encouraged to come participate in activities like exploring the Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge, caring for garden beds, creating a postcard inspired by Longfellow Creek, looking inside a salmon, and enjoying guided nature walks.
Please RSVP at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LongfellowCreek
Questions? Email Sheryl.Shapiro@Seattle.gov or call (206) 615-1443.
*In case of heavy rain, the celebration will be relocated to the Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106).Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge
Let your imagination soar when you see the giant salmon bones and 16-foot-tall dragonfly—two copper sculptures on the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail.
Postcards from the Creek
Meet your creek is an art project by Vaughn Bell, an artist who lives in the creek watershed. Create unique, hand-made postcards based on your observations and understanding of Longfellow Creek. You will get the chance to mail the postcard to a friend or loved one, or to donate it to the postcard archive which may be displayed in the community. Images of the postcards will be shared online at the Meet Your Creek blog.
Salmon: Look inside
You may know how a fish swims, but do you know how it eats, breathes, and reproduces? You’ll discover the swimming, eating, breathing, and reproducing systems—and you can touch them (if you want to)!
Nature Walk
Local naturalists will guide you through the park and open spaces on a flat, wide trail. See and learn about the creek, salmon, and the wide variety of plants and their historical uses.

From Delridge Neighborhoods District Council chair Mat McBride:
I’m pleased to announce that our outreach to SDOT and Metro to discuss and collaborate on the Rapid Ride H line through Delridge has resulted in a meeting on January 17th at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.
Metro and SDOT will host a drop-in session from 5:00-6:30 pm, with a DNDC hosted meeting to follow at 7:00 (30 minutes will be given to reset the room and otherwise recharge after the drop-in session). This will be the only DNDC meeting in January. Other than the change in venue, which was specifically designed to provide access to transit riders along the Delridge corridor, this meeting falls on our regular time and date. There will be no specific agenda for this meeting, as we have only one topic – to review and provide input on design elements and implementation.

On Thursday, January 18, community members and kids are invited to join artists from Oakland’s WowHaus studio for a discovery walk to help inform art projects coming to our neighborhood as part of the redevelopment of the 120 into the Metro Rapid Ride H line. Around 2:30 pm, we’ll meet at Roxhill Elementary under the main entry awning, then walk over to the 26th and Roxbury stop and hop on the 120 bus to the stop at Trenton and Delridge (so bring your bus fare). The office of ‘Trees for Seattle,’ a division of the Seattle Department of Public Utilities, is sponsoring a walk led by a trained volunteer to identify many of the interesting, common and rare trees in the Genesee neighborhood of West Seattle. The walk will take place on Saturday, June 2nd, from 9:30 to 12:00 noon. The walk begins at Ercolini Park at 48th Ave and Alaska St. We will take a leisurely walk down the tree-lined streets telling stories about different species of trees and pointing easy ways by which they can be identified. After winding around several blocks, the walk ends at the junction of Charlestown St and 48th Ave.

Haunted Hike
Saturday, October 13, 2018
Kiwanis Schoenwald Park
16030 Sylvester Road SW
Burien, WA
(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)
5:30-8:30 pm
Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.
Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.
And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.
Organizations and businesses that provide housing to seniors will be present to provide information and answer questions about independent living, retirement communities, assisted living, skilled nursing, and low income options.

Feet First Walk & Talk: West Seattle Light Rail
OCTOBER 16, 2018 @ 4:30 PM — 6:30 PMExplore potential sites for the West Sesattle Sound Transit Link light rail stations
Learn about site locations and discuss options during this free tour and post-gathering at Ounces Taproom
Explore potential West Seattle Sound Transit Link light rail stations with King County Council Chair Joe McDermott, Sound Transit officials, and community leaders.
Feet First is pleased to host this one-of-kind opportunity to connect community members with local leaders and public officials in a forum for open discussion about pedestrian safety and accessibility in the community. We will visit Link light rail station alternatives at West Seattle Junction, Avalon, and Delridge.* Sound Transit is currently evaluating and gathering public input on potential station sites.
The Link light rail site selections will influence West Seattle development over the coming decades, including whether or not people have safe and accessible walkways. We will discuss tradeoffs between the various site alternatives and how to ensure good walking access to the light rail system.
Don’t miss out on the post-Walk & Talk refreshments at Ounces Taproom & Beer Garden! Join us for further discussion, a thirst-quenching selection of Washington beers and delicious food from the Bella M’Briana food truck. Ounces will generously provide a percentage of beer sales from the evening to Feet First.
