Haunted Hike @ Kiwanis Schoenwald Park
Oct 13 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Haunted Hike

Saturday, October 13, 2018

Kiwanis Schoenwald Park

16030 Sylvester Road SW

Burien, WA

(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)

5:30-8:30 pm

Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.

Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.

And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Ethical Trade Sale @ Walmesley Center
Nov 18 @ 9:30 am – 1:00 pm

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s annual Catholic Relief Services Ethical Trade Sale is coming up on Sunday, November 18 from 9:30 am-1:00 pm in the Walmesley Center (7000 35th Ave SW).

We live in an era of unprecedented economic interdependence. Ethical Trade seeks to change the ways in which conventional trade often leaves behind the most vulnerable people. By buying Ethical Trade, you support the efforts of skilled farmers and artisans working to break the cycle of poverty and to build stronger communities. Employers also assure that workers are treated with dignity and that forced labor is not part of the supply chain.

At the sale, you’ll find unique gift items, including chocolates, Advent calendars, nativities, crosses, holiday and home décor, scarves, ornaments, baskets, and much more. In addition to Ethical Trade items, you’ll find: holiday cards from Noel House (a Catholic Community Services shelter for homeless women), tasty treats sold by the Pre-K and 3rd grade classes to benefit WestSide Baby, Tanzanian rosaries and batiks items from Maryknoll, Catholic lip and beard balms benefiting youth ministry, Purpose Jewelry made by women who escaped Human Trafficking, and Olivewood Items from the Holy Land. While you browse, be sure to sample free Fair Trade coffee provided by Pura Vida.

Proceeds go to Catholic Relief Services and OLG’s efforts to bring Fair Trade coffee and tea to our events.

Dec 8 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

A beautiful area called the Thistle Street Green Space along the
Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail needs your help in a battle against invasive
species. Next to a local pea patch garden, Chief Sealth High School,
and Longfellow Creek, this piece of green space requires regular
maintenance to keep it clear of invaders like Himalayan
Blackberry, Buttercup, Herb Robert, and others. Come volunteer with
DIRT Corps and learn how to identify both native plants and invasive plants
as well as how to remove all kinds of invasive species so native
plants can thrive. Afterwards you can walk the trails and explore this

Restorative Justice and Healing @ Youngstown Theater
Jan 21 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Join us for Restorative Justice and Healing, our MLK Day of Service event in partnership with United Way of King County. Childcare and community dinner are provided.

In honoring Dr. King on this day of service, DNDA will engage Delridge and surrounding communities in constructive conversation about how race and justice influence each other in modern-day America. In examining what it means to have justice, this event will bring together neighbors of all ethnicities and races to bridge our differences and communicate through a restorative justice approach.

Utilizing the peacemaking circle, participants will engage in a non-hierarchical discussion and learn through the collective wisdom embedded in the stories and lived experiences of all participants.

This event will include a screening of the film Healing Justice, which explores the causes and consequences of the U.S. justice system and its effect on marginalized communities.

Local service-based organizations will be invited to participate and advocate for the resources they provide—including organizations like Hate Free Delridge and Young Women Empowered. Following the event, all participants and volunteers will be invited to continue discussing over a community dinner.

Pop-Up Benefit for Local Artist Christine Olson @ Capers
Jan 26 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Aid to an artist … at least that is what we’re hoping for.

Popular and beloved Capers-art walk artist Christine Helen Olson has had a tough holiday season. Many of you may have heard of the early-morning fire in Fremont on Christmas Eve that badly damaged Sfingiday, Christine’s newly-opened gift and art gallery that supports art and fine crafts created by artists from around the U.S.

The cause was arson.

Capers is supporting Christine with a Sfingiday pop-up while she gets back on her feet.

Christine will be with us showing her paintings and work from many of the artists and crafts folks she promotes.

We’d like your help. Please come. Join us for a sip and a bite. Please invite your customers. Bring friends, neighbors, your posse, and peeps. Bring smiling faces, warm hugs, well wishes, and any support you can.

Purchases appreciated.

Donations accepted.

All proceeds directly benefit Christine’s gallery.

Intersections Festival @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Mar 21 @ 2:00 pm

Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance will be happening for the second year, this March 21-24, 2019 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in the Delridge neighborhood. Intersections showcases performers in improv, sketch, stand-up, burlesque, storytelling, spoken word, music, theatre, and dance; however, it doesn’t end there.Intersections remains committed to its focus on equity, inclusion, and representation. “Seattle is a diverse city,” says Jekeva Phillips, one member of the all-womxn team, “Why are we only seeing the same faces and hearing the same voices?” Phillips (who is featured in City Arts Magazine’s 2018 Future List) was approached about the project by Natasha Ransom, and Kinzie Shaw of FEELINGS, an Improv duo which aims to amplify intersectional feminism in the face of a white-cis-hetero patriarchy.

The four-day festival will feature a myriad of comedy-related acts from Seattle’s best and brightest POC, Queer, Trans, non-binary, and neurodiverse performers. Each show is a different experience loaded with a variety of acts. No show in the festival will be the same, so the Intersections team strongly encourages patrons to be a part of it all. “We are so excited to be in the audience for this festival,” Say co-founders Natasha Ransom and Kinzie Shaw “The talent is just unbelievably good and we want to soak as much of it in as possible.”

Don’t miss our Giving Party, coming up Saturday March 9th from 2-4pm at Capitol Cider. It’s completely free to attend! For more information about the festival, like Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance on Facebook or visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

For more information about the lineup, visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

Intersections is funded in part by 4Culture, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, Planned Parenthood, and KEXP.

Intersections Festival @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Mar 22 @ 2:00 pm

NORTHWEST BOYCHOIR PRESENTS–“CHORAL TRADITION” @ Holy Rosary Church
Mar 24 @ 7:00 pm

The highly acclaimed Northwest Boychoir announces their Choral Tradition series for March 2019. Now in its fifth season, Choral Tradition celebrates the breadth and diversity of the classical choral repertoire.

This year’s program will feature John Rutter’s Gloria, and great choral works by Brahms, Debussy, Lauridsen, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Orff and Rheinberger for both treble and SATB male chorus.

About the Northwest Boychoir

The Northwest Boychoir’s musical sophistication, rich tonal quality, and dedication to exacting perfection have established its reputation as one of the nation’s premier children’s choirs. Along with Vocalpoint! Seattle, the Northwest Boychoir has trained thousands of young singers for more than 40 years, and more significantly, shaped the lives of our region’s youth by teaching important lessons in personal commitment and the value of teamwork. Led by Joseph Crnko, now in his 35th year as Music Director, the Choir’s staff of professional musicians and educators is engaged in the teaching of a rigorous curriculum that trains young singers, 6-18 years old, to be fully-skilled musicians who sing at the highest professional level, read music fluently, and perform in professional settings with confidence.

For more than 30 years, the Choirs have maintained a close working relationship with the Seattle Symphony and participate annually in the performance of great choral works. Last February, the Northwest Boychoir joined with the SSO to perform Vivadi’s Gloria, and then in March returned to Benaroya Hall for performances of Orff’s Carmina burana. The following month, the Boychoir again collaborated with the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Symphony Chorale for performances of Stravinsky’s Perséphone. The Northwest Boychoir will perform the Debussy Nocturnes in Maestro Morlot’s Farewell Concert with the Seattle Symphony in June.

Last June, the Northwest Boychoir presented their annual classical series, Choral Tradition, featuring Michael Haydn’s Missa Sancti Aloyssi and Francis Poulenc’s Gloria. At the end of the year, the Northwest Boychoir was honored to perform with Music of Remembrance when they presented their 20th Anniversary concert at Benaroya Hall. The Northwest Boychoir closed its season with eight performances of its 40th season of A Festival of Lessons & Carols, including a presentation with Northwest Sinfonia at Benaroya Hall.

Along with a very active performance schedule, the Northwest Boychoir is regularly contracted for recording engagements. Last year the Northwest Boychoir recorded the soundtrack for the motion picture Prospect, and can also be heard in Cirque du Soleil’s Volta. The Northwest Boychoir serves as the official “Singing Ambassadors” of Washington.

Apology Ceremony @ Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center
Mar 30 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

TIME TO APOLOGIZE TO THE DUWAMISH TRIBE?

It’s happening Saturday, March 30 at Duwamish Longhouse, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
4705 W Marginal Way SW

“In the spirit of cultural humility, we apologize – and listen to the voices of the land,” reads a flyer put out by the Grandmothers Global Healing Movement, founded by Norma Jean Young, focused on bringing the Wisdomkeeping Grandmother’s presence and voice back to the world.

Young first gathered global Grandmothers in 2003 at “Getting Down to Earth with the Grandmothers” on Whidbey Island, at Whidbey Institute. It featured five key grandmothers: from New Zealand, Tibet, Hawaii, Lummi, and Grandmother Vi Hilbert of Upper Skagit Nation.

The Apology will be focused on the Duwamish people, and all Native American tribes, at a ceremony March 30 at the Duwamish Longhouse, 4705 W. Marginal Way SW, Seattle at 1 p.m. A meal will be served at 3 p.m., with music throughout.

The apology is co-sponsored by the Duwamish Longhouse and the Grandmothers Global Healing Movement. Featured speakers include H.E. Dagmola Kusho Sakya of the Tibetan Buddhist lineage; Rev. Kelly Brown, lead pastor of Plymouth Church Seattle; Pastor Pat Wright of Total Experience Gospel Choir fame; and others. Everyone is encouraged to bring food and gifting to the Indigenous, whether dollars, services or goods.

“This critical time of breakdown in our world culture demands the presence that holds life whole. Wisdom-keeping grandmothers have always been stabilizers, looked to for functional guidance to hold life whole – especially in troubled times,” says Young. “This is a healing event to bring together the essential components of healing—cultural humility, apology, listening, and taking action in partnership.”

Norma Jean Young, a reiki master, served as a healer and helper to Great Grandmother Vi Hilbert in the three years before she died. Hilbert, the last fully fluent language speaker of Lushootseed culture, was a most valued Grandmother taproot who served many Coast Salish tribes. She was named a Washington State Living Treasure in 1989, and received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1994, presented by President Bill Clinton.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Apr 6 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society
