Alizah Olivas trunk show @ CAPERS
Dec 16 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Dec 16-17, Alizah Olivas Trunk Show. Meet this local jewelry artist in person and select from fine silver and semi-precious stone necklaces and earrings.

Local jewelry artisan Alizah Olivas will be at CAPERS Dec 16, 10 am-6 pm and Dec 17, 9:30am-5pm, selling her beautiful silver and gemstone pieces – perfect for a special lady on your holiday list!

“Alizah’s pieces speak to so many of our customers,” said CAPERS owner Lisa Myers. “In fact, one of our clients snapped a photo of a beautiful silver necklace she wanted and sent her husband back to buy it for Christmas!”

A West Seattleite born and reared in White Center, Olivas began creating jewelry about 10 years ago. With support from her husband, family and friends, she has been learning and crafting jewelry ever since, attracting many collectors in the area.

“Whether it's a new gemstone I’ve found, a new shape I want to create, or a combination of the two, making each new piece is simply fun. If I’m smiling when I’m done with a piece, I’m hoping you’ll be smiling while wearing it,” said the proud lab owner of George and Gracie, who keep her company while she works.

Silver has always been Olivas’ favorite metal to wear and work with.

“The bright reflectiveness makes me happy and adding semi-precious stones only makes it better. Hopefully, my jewelry brings a brightness to your day,” shared Olivas.

For more, stop by CAPERS in-store at 4525 California Avenue Southwest in West Seattle, see our December calendar of events or visit www.alizahsjewelry.com.

Short Memoir Workshop @ Delridge Library – VENUE CHANGE
Jan 20 @ 4:00 pm – 5:20 pm

Memoir Class in West Seattle

This coming Valentine’s Day, reach beyond the chocolates and flowers and give someone you love something priceless: the gift of your story.

Join writing teacher Martin Piccoli in a two-part writing workshop focused on crafting a short memoir that celebrates the positive impact someone has had on your life. In this class, you will review the basics of memoir, select and shape a personal story you wish to share, and compose your piece. (Much of your independent writing will be completed in the two weeks between the classes, so, yes, there’s homework.)
When this workshop concludes, you will have a solid draft of your story ready to give a friend, a parent, a sibling, a partner, a spouse (along with those chocolates?)–or to keep just for yourself.
West Seattle resident Martin Piccoli is your host for this event. He’s spent the last 25 years teaching writing in the public schools of Seattle, Columbus, Ohio, and Brooklyn. This year he’s taking time out of the classroom to do some personal writing, and hopes with this workshop he can help you do the same.

This workshop is open to the public, though seating will be limited.
The classes will be held at NEW VENUE – DELRIDGE LIBRARY
The classes run from 4pm – 5:20pm
The first class is on Saturday, January 20.
The second class is on Saturday, February 3.
Please bring something to write with, analog or digital.
For more information, please contact Martin (me!) at martinpiccoli@aol.com.

This event is not sponsored by The Seattle Public Library.

Nighttime low-tide beach walks @ Constellation Park, Alki
Jan 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join trained volunteer Beach Naturalists at South Alki/Constellation Park on the following dates this year for a free guided exploration at very low tide.

Explore the beach during winter nighttime low tides with Beach Naturalist staff and volunteers. Discover what creatures we see on the beach at this time of year. Dress for the weather (bundle up!) and for tide pooling: boots, hats, gloves and a good flashlight are musts.

Sunday, January 28, 7 pm–9pm

Beach etiquette:
While on the beach, please remember:
~ Walk carefully; there’s life beneath your feet!
~ Touch gently with one wet finger.
~ Observe animals where they are and please avoid picking them up.
~ Please only move rocks that are small enough to be moved with one hand and return them to the position in which you found them.
~ Please only remove trash from the beach, nothing else. Many of our beaches are protected by law.

White Center Repair Time fix-it
Saturday, March 24, 2018, 9:30 am-12:30 pm
White Center Community Center gym
1321 SW 102nd

Bring in your small household items and clothing, and our experienced “fixers” will try to repair and mend them. Free!

With these repair events, we aim to keep stuff out of the landfill, conserve resources and save you money!

You must be present during the repair. There is no assurance an item can be fixed, or that attempting to fix it won’t break it even more.

Please only bring items small enough to be easily carried in by one person. Do not bring any items that are leaking, dangerous, contain gasoline, or have a strong odor. Clothing and other textiles you bring in for mending should be washed first.

Please sign up in advance if possible to let us know what you plan to bring, so our fixers can be prepared. For specialized repairs (which many are), please bring any specific parts or materials needed for your repair.

To sign up or if you have questions about any King County repair events, please contact Tom Watson by e-mail or at 206-477-4481. Thanks!

Arthur’s first anniversary
Mar 28 @ 9:00 am – 10:00 pm

The Admiral restaurant/bar will celebrate its first anniversary on March 28th!

We have been overwhelmed by the support of our neighbors, friends, and family and to celebrate we’ve organized a day of giving back. Please join us as we celebrate the exact date one year ago that we opened our doors — with $3.28 house red and white wines, $3.28 lamb and vegetarian sandwiches, and $3.28 Lagunitas beers. AND, Aussie meat pies! As we give back to the neighborhood and family that have been so kind to us over the past year, we would ask to extend that giving spirit to our neighbors who may need it more than us. Please bring a donation for the West Seattle Food Bank — food, diapers, clothes, etc. — and Arthur’s will match the donations in cash. Thank you so much for all the wonderful kindness and support over the past year—we are so happy to contribute to the amazing network of bars, restaurants, and retail spaces that make up the North Admiral district of West Seattle.

Playshop @ Fauntleroy Schoolhouse
Apr 22 @ 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm

April 22nd

12:30-4:00 pm

Fauntleroy Schoolhouse
9131 California Ave. SW

In this half-day playshop, we will dive into activities that bring our awareness to what we create from fear. Then we will shift our focus from fear to creating fun thus opening ourselves up to reinventing our lives. The activities are a mix of improv games and scenes, and activities that engage our body’s intelligence for full expression. No experience necessary.

Do you want to:

PLAY through your issues instead of working hard on them?

LEARN to use improv as a way to practice creating what you really want?

ACT out your dreams and conjure fun?!

YES, AND your experience, and discover how loving yourself can be a playful, embodied practice in creative expression?

If yes, then join us in improv games and mind/body centering activities as we play and uncover old unconscious patterns and stories. Then we’ll apply the simple “Yes, And” rule of improv: We’ll say YES to them, and dive in adding humour and fun. Then we’ll add the AND to create a new story of our choosing.

I use presence and play to facilitate the discovery of what you really want. Then we use improv to practice co-creating your dreams so that you can experience the feeling of receiving what you really want.

Come play with us and begin co-creating your new story! RSVP required. $37 per person if you pay online through Meet Up: www.meetup.com/PLAY-IT-OUT/. $35 if you pay cash at the door. Please RSVP to me via e-mail if you plan to pay cash at the door: playitoutimprov@outlook.com.

Training is free. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Low-cost Life Jacket Sale @ Southwest Pool
Jun 9 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

From Seattle Parks and Recreation:

The sun is emerging from behind the clouds, the weather is getting warmer, and summer is just around the corner. Soon, many community members will be drawn to pools, beaches, and water sports across the region. And as water recreation increases, water safety becomes especially important. According to the Center for Disease Control, over 4,000 people drown each year in the United States, and among children between the ages of 1 and 14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death.

Life jackets save lives, and Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is partnering with Seattle Children’s Hospital, the National Safe Boating Council, and Mustang Survival to host low-cost life jacket sales at pool locations across Seattle. Attend one of six life jacket sales to buy discounted life jackets for you and your family. Infant and youth size life jackets are $20, adult sizes are $30, and families who qualify for SPR scholarships pay $10 for any life jacket size.

June 9th, 10 am-2 pm, at Southwest Pool

On Being Gendered: A Workshop for Every Body
Thursdays in June (14, 21, 28)
6:30- 8:00pm at Admiral Church

— To Register, email officemgr@admiralchurch.org-

This workshop series is a basic primer on current theory about gender (distinct from sex assignment and
sexual orientation) and how it relates to everyone, whether trans*, gender fluid, cis-gender, non-binary, etc.

We will focus on our own experiences of identifying with our gender, of having our gender expression
policed by others (and ourselves), and the church’s role in supporting human freedom around gender
identity and expression. By the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of
what it means to be an ally and co-conspirator with trans* and gender non-conforming folx, and the
gifts that progressive Christian theology can bring to this work.

Nurturing the Environment and Food Access workshop @ Camp Long
Jun 16 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

DNDA’s Let’s Talk Race Series 2018‎: Nurturing the Environment and Food Access Workshop. Coming up on June 16th, 1–6 pm. Register in advance at tinyurl.com/RaceSeries5

What would it look like to have equitable access to food that nourishes our bodies and nourishes the land? Join us at Camp Long to talk about race in the context of Nurturing the Environment and Food Access. This outdoor workshop will create space for community members to engage in courageous conversations that rely on our vulnerability rather than on instant resolutions. This event will explore how our food systems are built upon the racial injustices of slavery, and how environmental protection is inseparable from indigenous sovereignty. By exposing histories of white supremacy and colonialism in the United States, we can reveal their impacts today. Through timelines, open dialogue, and circle practice, participants will share stories of food traditions and connections to land that build bridges across difference and promote healing.

Haunted Hike

Saturday, October 13, 2018

Kiwanis Schoenwald Park

16030 Sylvester Road SW

Burien, WA

(Drive behind Sylvester Middle School)

5:30-8:30 pm

Boy Scout Troop 360 (Lake Burien Presbyterian Church) is hosting this great family event. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, and other community groups from across the region, are coming together to offer a haunted hike this Saturday, October 13, for all kids and their families in the West Seattle area. The cost is $2 per person. There will be Halloween-themed displays and activities along the trails throughout this beautiful, forested park.

Everyone should bring a flashlight to help as they walk from display to display because the trails can be very dark. There will also be Halloween treats available at many of the displays. Roasting monkey brains that strangely look a lot like marshmallows will occur as well. The kids will have lots of fun, and this event is a great way to learn more about the many Scouting youth programs that are available to families in the area.

And the rumors that a 10-foot tall T-Rex skeleton will be roving the park in search of Cub Scouts to eat may be true. But our hero Boy Scouts, using spears, will be protecting all kids from this largest carnivore in King County. Listen for the roaring as you start your hike.

Seattle Writes (for teens): Piloting the Category Five Hurricane: Getting Through Tough Times @ High Point Library
Oct 21 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

At the High Point Library:

Teens are invited to join poet Ann Teplick in a poetry-writing workshop that explores the themes of self-care and resilience.

In this poetry-writing workshop for teens, we will explore the themes of self-care and resilience. In a world where, in addition to our own personal challenges, we witness the struggles of those whom we love, and of those whom we haven’t had the good fortune to meet; in a world where overwhelm is often the wave that spins us to our outer limits—what brings us to solid ground?

In two workshops at the High Point and Delridge Branches, teens will read and be inspired to respond to the work of poets such as Li-Young Lee, Nikki Giovanni, Naomi Shihab Nye, Suheir Hammad, Rumi, Gretel Ehrlich, Ntozake Shange, David Wagoner, Francisco X. Alarcon, and more. The material for each workshop will be different. Please attend one or both! All participants are invited to read and celebrate their work on Sunday November 4th from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Highpoint Branch of the Seattle Public Library. Do join us!

Ann Teplick is a Seattle poet, playwright, prose writer, and teaching artist. She writes with youth at Seattle Children’s Hospital, through Writers in the Schools; Child Study Treatment Center, through Pongo Teen Writing; and at Coyote Central. She’s received support from Artist Trust, Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, 4Culture, and The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Her writing has appeared in Raven Chronicles, Crab Creek Review, The Louisville Review, Drash, Spartan, Hunger Mountain, Jack Straw Writers’ Anthology, 4Culture’s Poetry on the Busses, and more. Her plays have been showcased in Washington, Oregon, and Nova Scotia. She is currently working on a young-adult novel in poems where resilience and self-care save the day in the face of tragedy.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. This workshop is intended for teens. Registration is not required for this writing class, but seating is limited. Seating will be on a first come, first seated basis. Doors to the meeting room will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the class. Native Plant ID and Invasive Plant Removal Along Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail @ Thistle Street Green Space
Dec 1 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

A beautiful area called the Thistle Street Green Space along the
Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail needs your help in a battle against invasive
species. Next to a local pea patch garden, Chief Sealth High School,
and Longfellow Creek, this piece of green space requires regular
maintenance to keep it clear of invaders like Himalayan
Blackberry, Buttercup, Herb Robert, and others. Come volunteer with
DIRT Corps and learn how to identify both native plants and invasive plants
as well as how to remove all kinds of invasive species so native
plants can thrive. Afterwards you can walk the trails and explore this
hidden gem in Delridge.

Restorative Justice and Healing @ Youngstown Theater
Jan 21 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Join us for Restorative Justice and Healing, our MLK Day of Service event in partnership with United Way of King County. Childcare and community dinner are provided.

In honoring Dr. King on this day of service, DNDA will engage Delridge and surrounding communities in constructive conversation about how race and justice influence each other in modern-day America. In examining what it means to have justice, this event will bring together neighbors of all ethnicities and races to bridge our differences and communicate through a restorative justice approach.

Utilizing the peacemaking circle, participants will engage in a non-hierarchical discussion and learn through the collective wisdom embedded in the stories and lived experiences of all participants.

This event will include a screening of the film Healing Justice, which explores the causes and consequences of the U.S. justice system and its effect on marginalized communities.

Local service-based organizations will be invited to participate and advocate for the resources they provide—including organizations like Hate Free Delridge and Young Women Empowered. Following the event, all participants and volunteers will be invited to continue discussing over a community dinner.

Nature Crafting Skills Workshops for Women @ TBA
Feb 16 all-day

Nature Crafting Skills Workshops for Women

Working with your own hands invites you to be still, within the present moment – for complete concentration to the work at hand. Holding your creation brings a connection to the Earth and the many traditional cultures who honored the plants, fibers, and animals of the land they lived with. Each class will cover the basics of traditional crafting to create a small ‘keepsake’ item of function and beauty. Participants will also take home the tools used in class for continued crafting beyond our time together. COST: $300, plus $125 materials fee for the entire series.

Mioposto Dine Out to Cross Out Cancer @ Mioposto Pizzeria Admiral
Feb 26 @ 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Mioposto Admiral is hosting a Dine Out for a local nonprofit called Cross out Cancer next Tuesday, February 26th from 4-10pm. A portion of proceeds from the evening will be donated to the organization. Dine in, take out, delivery via Caviar, and retail sales are all ways people can support.

Cross Out Cancer is a non-profit organization that began in Tampa, Florida, almost three years ago in 2015. It was started by a high school junior, and their mission was to combine their love of cross country with the passion of serving pediatric cancer patients and to bring about awareness of childhood cancer. Fast forward to December 2016, Cross Out Cancer was established in Seattle and was on track to their first race in May of 2017! With a completely student-led board of 20 representatives from high schools across the Greater Seattle area, our board is largely made up of people with a particular interest or connection to childhood cancer.

Our goal is to bring about awareness of pediatric oncology and give high school students the opportunity to impact the members of their community. Our organization has joined with Seattle Children’s Hospital to host an annual public running event to unite the community in a common effort to support families battling cancer in the Seattle area.

‘Letting it Go, Letting it Grow’ workshop @ Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Walmesley Hall
Mar 9 @ 9:30 am – 2:30 pm

Providence Mount St. Vincent and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish to host ‘Letting it Go, Letting it Grow’ workshop

Join Providence Mount St. Vincent and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish for a community event on Letting it Go – how to clarify values, get organized, clean and downsize. This March 9, 2019, event offers speakers who will help participants create vision and space for their whole lives. In addition to taking stock of one’s life, the New Year is also a wonderful time to assess one’s financial affairs and to plan for the future. Taking a cue from Marie Kondo and her popular Netflix show “Tidying Up,” this “Letting it Go, Letting it Grow” workshop will help participants clarify their priorities, purpose, personal mission and values – and to develop a thoughtful plan. Between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. participants will hear from Donna Oiland of Radiant Joy Ministries, participate in a program and interactive workshop with Rebecca Crichton of NW Center for Creative Aging, meet with exhibitors, and enjoy lunch.

A $10 donation is suggested for coffee, refreshments and lunch. Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Walmesley Hall, 7000 35th Ave., SW, Seattle. RSVP and direct questions to Marion Kari at marionk@olgseattle.org or 206-935-0358 (w) or 206-786-2579 (cell).
