‘Restoration Reunion’ and demonstration with David Rogers @ Log House Museum
Aug 9 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Two-part “Restoration Reunion” on Sunday, Aug. 9, to feature outdoor demonstration, dinner speech by log preservationist David Rogers:

The Southwest Seattle Historical Society is thrilled to welcome back to West Seattle the log-home preservationist who was the contractor for restoration of its “Birthplace of Seattle” Log House Museum 18 years ago.

David Rogers will be the special guest of the historical society for two events on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015. His appearances are supported by 4Culture.

~ The first event, free and open to the public, will run from 2 to 4 pm in the museum’s Circle Courtyard, 3003 61st Ave. S.W., where Rogers will conduct an interactive demonstration of log-restoration techniques and describe in detail the hands-on work he did on the museum.

~ The second event, at 6:30 pm is a fundraiser for the historical society, is a no-host dinner and speech at West 5 Lounge in the West Seattle Junction, at which Rogers will speak about the importance of preserving and restoring log structures. Admission is a $10 donation, payable at the door or online at http://www.loghousemuseum.info/events/welcome-back-david-rogers/. (Any food or drink ordered is in addition to the donation.)

Reservations are being taken for both events at
http://www.loghousemuseum.info/events/welcome-back-david-rogers/.

Rogers, who has operated his Logs & Timbers business from Rhododendron, Oregon, since 1983, has successfully helped scores of private organizations and public agencies to achieve their preservation goals.

He inspired countless thousands with his hands-on helming of the Log House Museum’s back (south) wall in 1996-1997. His craftsmanship on behalf of the museum is highlighted in a 6-minute video that is viewable at http://www.loghousemuseum.info/events/welcome-back-david-rogers/.

West Seattle High School all-school reunion @ West Seattle High School
Jun 4 @ 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm

The West Seattle High School Alumni Association’s Annual All-School Reunion will be held on June Saturday, June 4th, from 2:00 to 5:30 pm. This reunion is for every school year that West Seattle High School has been open. Come find out what room your “class” is meeting in and find what your classmates have been doing since you graduated. If you have friends in that were in other grad years, check out their rooms and see if they came, too! Learn more on their website here.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4TH
ALL-SCHOOL REUNION AT WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL, 2-5:30 pm.

If you’ve ever attended an All-School Reunion, you know that the class celebrating its 50th reunion gets the biggest and best room in the place. This year, the big room will be ours. We’ll have several hours to continue earlier conversations and to start new ones, some with old friends from other classes. Finger food will be served. There will be classic cars to see. We’ll take a class photograph. Our own Gary Smith will be the Master of Ceremonies at a recognition program in the auditorium. Scholarship students, monogram club members and this year’s Hall of Fame inductees will be honored, as will we. And we’ll be first on the program!

AFTER PARTY AT AN EXCITING NEW WEST SEATTLE RESTAURANT, 4-9 pm

SOME OF US WILL LEAVE THE ALL-SCHOOL REUNION ONCE WE’VE HAD OUR MOMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE RECOGNITION PROGRAM. OTHERS MAY DECIDE TO STAY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL UNTIL THE ALL-SCHOOL REUNION ENDS. WHENEVER YOU LEAVE, CONSIDER DRIVING DOWN TO AN EXCITING NEW WEST SEATTLE RESTAURANT, SO NEW THAT WE’VE YET TO DISCOVER IT. FEAR NOT. WHEN WE FIND IT, WE’LL POST ITS NAME HERE. WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE RESTAURANT, YOUR CLASSMATES WILL BE WAITING TO GREET YOU. WITH ANY LUCK, DELICIOUS GREEN SALADS, SOUPS, SMALL PLATES AND FULL DINNERS WILL BE ON THE MENU, ALONG WITH A WIDE SELECTION OF COFFEE, SOFT DRINKS, CRAFT BEERS, DRAFT BEERS AND WINE. YOU’LL BE ABLE TO DRINK, SNACK OR EAT DINNER WHILE YOU BASK IN THE AFTERGLOW OF WHAT WE HOPE WILL HAVE BEEN A GLORIOUS REUNION.

‘Why Art Matters’ Panel @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Apr 12 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Councilmember Lisa Herbold (District 1, West Seattle & South Park) will participate in a discussion Wednesday evening about the role of public investments in the arts and the health of our community, plus the current landscape of dedicated arts funding. The panel, ‘Why Art Matters’ is co-sponsored by KUOW FM, the Office of Arts and Culture, and Councilmember Herbold and will include representatives from the Seattle Arts Commission, Seattle Symphony and Arts Corps.

WHAT:  ‘Why Art Matters’ panel with break-out sessions focusing on specific issues and action steps

WHEN: Wednesday, April 12
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
4408 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106

WHO:
Councilmember Lisa Herbold
Marcie Sillman, KUOW
Vivian Phillips, Seattle Arts Commission
Simon Woods, Seattle Symphony
James Miles, Executive Director of Arts Corps.

Now more than ever, the arts play an important role in defining our identity and leading the way for racial equity. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) are vital for our community’s well-being.

The 2018 federal budget released by Donald Trump proposes elimination of federal support for the NEA and CPB. A full federal budget proposal is expected in May, and will inspire a myriad questions about how to help numerous groups remain solvent continue this important work, as well as the larger question of what the elimination of government-sponsored cultural agencies communicates to Americans and the rest of the world.

Please NOTE: The event is FREE and guests are invited to RSVP online and in advance

About VeteransRespond:
VeteransRespond is a service organization founded in December 2016 by disabled Veterans who were part of the advance team at Standing Rock.  VeteransRespond works to organize and coordinate highly trained Veteran volunteers to provide relief and service work in environmental and man-made disaster sites all across the United States. The organization was born out of the Standing Rock movement, which saw more than 4,000 veterans mobilize to Camp Oceti in defense of the Water Protectors and those standing against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).

DAPL, a 1,172-mile pipeline to transport crude oil across the Midwestern US, jeopardizes the drinking water of millions of Americans while simultaneously desecrating the sacred ground of the Lakota/Sioux nation. The veterans of VeteransRespond believe wholeheartedly that DAPL must be opposed in accordance with their oaths to protect America from enemies both foreign and domestic.

The Seattle Stand Down, a volunteer team of veterans dedicated to supporting veterans experiencing homelessness, is a one-stop shop for resources and services available to veterans who currently lack permanent housing or simply need a “hand up” in order to prevent homelessness.

Representatives from local businesses, non-profits, educational institutions, and all levels of government will be on hand with volunteers to provide medical screenings, eye exams, dental services, legal aid, employment opportunities, housing assistance, case management referrals, haircuts, personal hygiene items and meals.  The two-day event will also offer employment assistance and legal resources.

Services and resources will be provided at the Gene Colin Education Hall – Bldg C, 6737 Corson Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98108. Parking passes will be made available to veterans receiving services.

The Seattle Stand Down is unique from other stand down events in that it has a separate area designated for women where they can feel safe and comfortable. Providers will offer services specifically for women veterans including health care, advocacy, counseling, employment and personal care.

The Seattle Stand Down was founded as a community service project of student veterans at Seattle Central College. The Seattle Colleges District has hosted the event since its inception eight years ago.  Major funding for the Seattle Stand Down has been made possible through a Veterans Employment and Training Service grant from the U.S. Department of Labor as well as additional funding through the King County Veterans Program, funded by the Veteran, Seniors and Human Services Levy.

Pop-Up Benefit for Local Artist Christine Olson @ Capers
Jan 26 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Aid to an artist … at least that is what we’re hoping for.

Popular and beloved Capers-art walk artist Christine Helen Olson has had a tough holiday season. Many of you may have heard of the early-morning fire in Fremont on Christmas Eve that badly damaged Sfingiday, Christine’s newly-opened gift and art gallery that supports art and fine crafts created by artists from around the U.S.

The cause was arson.

Capers is supporting Christine with a Sfingiday pop-up while she gets back on her feet.

Christine will be with us showing her paintings and work from many of the artists and crafts folks she promotes.

We’d like your help. Please come. Join us for a sip and a bite. Please invite your customers. Bring friends, neighbors, your posse, and peeps. Bring smiling faces, warm hugs, well wishes, and any support you can.

Purchases appreciated.

Donations accepted.

All proceeds directly benefit Christine’s gallery.

Envisioning Seattle’s Small Lot Zoning Future @ Southwest Branch Library
Feb 19 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Seattle is going to change thousands of residential lots from “Single Family” to “Residential Small Lot” (RSL) as part of the MHA zoning reform. The rules covering RSL designations have been rewritten, and there are many questions about how it will affect our neighborhoods such as South Park, Highland Park, and the Junctions.

  • First, what is RSL and what kinds of new development are we likely to see?
  • Second, how does RSL address displacement, affordability, density, or sustainability?
  • Finally, how can we improve RSL so that it can be the most effective before the ordinance comes before the Council?

If you live in an urban village or are interested in innovative infill housing, join Matt Hutchins, AIA for this informational talk.

RSVP here: Envisioning Seattle’s Small Lot Zoning Future.

Opening Doors: Buying Your First Home @ Windermere Office
Mar 13 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Have you been to a few open houses, maybe talked to the real estate agent hosting the open, but still nervous about buying a home? Buying a home is fun, exciting and nerve wracking all at the same time, especially if you’ve never bought a home before.

This meetup will not only take the mystery out of the process, but provide a different approach to buying a home that’s sensible and not just hit and miss. We’ll have some fun too! (There are M&M’s involved!)

Coffee, tea and snacks (other than M&M’s) will be provided.

We’ll be meeting at the Windermere office in West Seattle – 4526 California Ave SW. There’s street parking, and free 3 hour parking behind the building (enter the parking lot off 42nd Ave SW, not the alley).

Memorial Day poppy distribution at WS Thriftway
May 25 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join American Legion Post 160 and ALA Unit 160 this Saturday May 25 and Sunday May 26 at the Morgan Junction Thriftway where members will distribute bright red poppies in honor of our fallen service members. The poppy has become an internationally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. One hundred percent of donations go directly to help local veterans.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

Each year, members of The American Legion family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

West Seattle High School 2019 all-school reunion
Jun 1 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-SCHOOL REUNION

First off – please note that we’re shaking things up a bit this year! With accessibility issues of many of our honored guests, and a very small cast of volunteers managing this event, we’ve opted for a MUCH simpler approach than in years past. Instead of breaking out into classrooms, we are designating tables for each range of years in or around the Commons, and for some in the Library. Think very large open house vibe. As laid out in the program map, tables will be organized chronologically by year range, so most of you will be next to the table of classes in the range above or behind you. No more climbing stairs, hunting for elusive rooms, traversing a daunting length of hallways, and dashing between classrooms to find and greet friends and family from other years.

We thank you in advance for supporting this change! As always, we welcome suggestions for improvement (highly recommended to be accompanied by offers for help ;) ), in our effort to maximize community and rapport while minimizing effort for planners and guests alike.

2019 Schedule of Events

4:00 – 5:30 pm View the Classic Cars showcased on SW Stevens outside the Historical entrance

4:00 – 4:30 pm Sign in, pick up programs, name tag and roam the halls

4:30 – 5:30 pm Individual Class Reunions in the Commons (or Library)

5:00 – 5:30 pm Hall of Fame Member’s video plays in the Theater

5:30 – 7:00 pm Presentations in the Theater: Scholarships Announcements, Recognition of the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1969, Hall of Fame Induction

And….

4:00 – 6:45 pm WSHS Baseball Team selling Mariners Tickets to benefit the WSHS Baseball

4:00 – 6:45 pm Refreshments available for purchase to benefit the Student Booster Club programs

West Seattle High School 2019 All-School Reunion After-Party @ Whisky West
Jun 1 @ 7:30 pm

West Seattle High School Alumni All-School Reunion After-Party Open Mic at Whisky West, Sat 6/1 7:30 pm:

Tim Turner has announced 2019 is his last year to host the annual open-mic live music event long known as the Westside High Alumni All-School Reunion After-Party. This event, started in 2006, features any number of willing and talented alumni musicians. Expect to see many of the usual suspects including Kevin Mason and others. In addition, there will be a special performance this year. The Crystal Sect band, made up of West Seattle High School students back in the 60’s, will perform a musical reprisal. Joining Tim are the other former Crystal Sect band members, Tom Hopp on bass, Dave Coleman on drums, Bob Rice on guitar, and Marc Orsen on keys.
Whisky West enjoys welcoming this robust community of revelers, and offer concoctions such as The Westside High and The Wildcat specialty drinks sporting visual hues of blue and gold.

Drop on over following the All-School Reunion for great snack and dinner options in addition to their notable beverage offerings, where fellow Westside High Alumni share an evening of music, dancing and community.

21 and older, please.

Pacific NW Black Veterans Appreciation/Celebration @ DAV Chapter 23
Jul 27 @ 11:00 am – 5:00 pm

The West Seattle Chapter of Disabled American Veterans will be hosting its inaugural Pacific Northwest Black Veterans Appreciation and Celebration July 27, 11am-5pm, at its headquarters, located at 4857 Delridge Way SW.

DAV created the event to honor the unique sacrifices and contributions made by our nation’s nearly three million Black Veterans – sacrifices that have often either been completely minimized, or have gone completely overlooked.

The event will include presentations from organizations that serve area veterans, a storytelling block featuring narratives of Black Veterans past and present, and panel discussions focusing on how to best help Black Veterans struggling with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and the role arts and creativity play in the healing of trauma.

During the Celebration, Chapter 23 will also present its first Distinguished Veterans Service Award to Mrs. Frankie Manning, former Chief of Nursing at VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and founder of the first minority veterans program launched at the hospital.

“The Pacific Northwest Black Veterans Appreciation and Celebration is the result of our yearly lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C., and is emblematic of what DAV means when we say we’re all about ‘serving the men and women who’ve served’,” said Ron Bryant, Commander, DAV Chapter 23.

He continued, “With support from our local Congressman, Adam Smith – a man with a proven track record of supporting our military, and of supporting our veterans – we wanted to use our platform as the most diverse DAV chapter in Washington State to help shine a light on those who feel their service to this country remains unappreciated.”

Commander Bryant concluded, “It is an honor to be able to do this for them.”

Entertainment will be provided by DJ TopSpin. A caterednch – free of charge – will be provided by Chef Tarik Abdullah.

The event is free, and is open to the public.
