A Night Out with Killer Whale Tales @ C & P Coffee Company
Sep 23 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

You’re invited to a special night out with Killer Whale Tales, a grassroots nonprofit that’s been hard at work for 13 years right here in West Seattle.

Killer Whale Tales is empowers youth to protect Puget Sound by educating them about our beloved orca population. Our program brings environmental science directly into the classroom, at no cost to schools. In the past 13 years we’ve reached over 100,000 students!

Join us Saturday, September 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at C&P Coffee in West Seattle for a unique opportunity as an adult to immerse yourself in the same experience our kids have in the program! Founder Jeff Hogan will deliver his interactive presentation and guests are invited to learn about the resident killer whales that call Puget Sound home. It’s an urgent time to talk about our orcas – as environmental protections face a precarious future.

Come relax, have a drink and connect with Killer Whale Tales. The event is free but donations are welcomed. Please RSVP at Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/night-out-with-killer-whale-tales-tickets-37660069281

About The Whale Trail
The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites around the region where the public may view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment by establishing a network of viewing sites along the whales’ trails through the Salish Sea and the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest.

Our goals are to increase awareness that our marine waters are home to orcas and other species; connect visitors to orcas, other marine wildlife and their habitat; inspire stewardship and build community; promote land-based whale watching. Our over-arching goal is to ensure the southern resident orcas do not go extinct.

The Whale Trail provides simple, powerful, and long-lasting reminders to visitors and residents alike that orcas and other whales live in our waters. Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 22 million people each year. Our near-term goals are to add a site in every coastal county in Washington, and around Vancouver Island, throughout the orcas’ range. Together, we will turn the tide for the whales!

The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State.

Nighttime low-tide beach walks @ Constellation Park, Alki
Jan 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join trained volunteer Beach Naturalists at South Alki/Constellation Park on the following dates this year for a free guided exploration at very low tide.

Explore the beach during winter nighttime low tides with Beach Naturalist staff and volunteers. Discover what creatures we see on the beach at this time of year. Dress for the weather (bundle up!) and for tide pooling: boots, hats, gloves and a good flashlight are musts.

Sunday, January 28, 7 pm–9pm

Beach etiquette:
While on the beach, please remember:
~ Walk carefully; there’s life beneath your feet!
~ Touch gently with one wet finger.
~ Observe animals where they are and please avoid picking them up.
~ Please only move rocks that are small enough to be moved with one hand and return them to the position in which you found them.
~ Please only remove trash from the beach, nothing else. Many of our beaches are protected by law.

Seattle Audubon community conversation @ C & P Coffee Company
Feb 28 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Wednesday, 2/28, Seattle Audubon is hosting a community meeting at C&P Coffee from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Seattle Audubon has made significant investment in two new program areas — communications and community engagement. We heard from our community that they want to better understand what we’re up to and how we do our work, and we want to get better at making and sustaining connections with our members. We know we have work to do to engage with our constituents across our chapter’s area, which includes more than the city of Seattle.

In 2018, we’re launching a series of community meetings, what we’re calling “listening sessions,” designed to help us spend more time with and better get to know communities across our geography. We hope that you’ll come and join us to hear about our 2018 plans, talk about how you can engage in that work, and primarily, we want to better get to know our West Seattle community and the conservation issues on your minds. We’re here to help and we look forward to the conversation.

Help fill a soccer goal with food donations @ Walt Hundley Playfield
Mar 28 @ 4:30 pm – 9:00 pm

To kick off the spring tryout season, Highline Premier Football Club (HPFC) invites you to Fill the Goal and help strike down hunger.

On Wednesday, March 28th from 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm, help HPFC fill an entire soccer goal with non-perishable food items. Players and families throughout the evening will accept your donations outside Walt Hundley Playfield, located at 3200 SW Myrtle Street, and just blocks from the West Seattle Food Bank. Simply drive up, give, and go.

Tryouts begin April 24th for players born 2009-2010 and run through the beginning of May for older age groups. For the complete tryout schedule and to register, visit highlinepremier.com/tryouts.

HPFC is the official Premier Development program of Highline Soccer Association (HSA) and the place for players looking for a year-round soccer experience. HPFC welcomes athletes looking to elevate their soccer experience, in an environment focused on individual development, advanced technical training, fluid team play, and engagement in community.

HSA represents over 4,000 youth soccer players from the communities of Des Moines/Midway, Sea-Tac, West Highline, and West Seattle. The Association is made up of two Recreational Soccer Clubs—West Seattle Soccer Club and Highline Soccer Club, a Select Soccer Program—HSA Select, and the Premier Development program, Highline Premier Football Club.

Pints of Ales & Killer Whale Tales
A kid- (and dog-) friendly event at Optimism Brewing Company

1 pm to 3 pm, March 31, 2018
1158 Broadway

Join West Seattle-based Killer Whale Tales at Capitol Hill’s Optimism Brewing Company on March 31, 2018 from 1 pm to 3 pm. Killer Whale Tales is a Seattle-based environmental education non-profit. Our program uses storytelling and field-based science to inspire students to take an active role in the conservation of Pacific Northwest killer whales and their habitat.

At Pints of Ales & Killer Whale Tales, our Founder, Jeff Hogan, will deliver an abbreviated version of our interactive program. You’ll learn about the killer whales that live in our Puget Sound waters and what we can do to help protect them and the ecosystem they live in. This is an urgent time for both as environmental protections themselves are endangered.

Come and join us! This event is free and fun for all ages. We will provide some light snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments. Beer will be available for purchase at the bar and Chavoya’s Hot Dogs will also be available for purchase. (Beer and hot dog sales do not benefit KWT).

Children and dogs are welcome at Optimism Brewing Company, so bring your friends and family

–Doors open at 6:30

With just 76 orcas in J, K and L pods, the Southern Resident Killer Whale population is nearing its all time low of 71 individuals. Is the population still viable – can they be saved? What have we learned over the past year that will help these orcas recover, and what are the most pressing questions still to be addressed?

Join us to hear the latest findings and future research directions, presented by Dr. Brad Hanson, NWFSC lead killer whale researcher.

Buy tickets now to reserve your seat. And hurry – this will likely sell out.

This is the first in the 2018 Orca Talk series hosted by The Whale Trail in West Seattle. Thanks to Nucor Steel for sponsoring this Orca Talk!

About the Speaker

Brad Hanson joined the Northwest Fisheries Science Center in April of 2003. Previously, Brad worked as a Wildlife Biologist at the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle, WA. Brad received a Ph.D. from the University of Washington where he worked on the development of improved tag attachment systems for small cetaceans. He also holds an M.S. in Fisheries from the University of Washington and a B.A. in Zoology also from the University of Washington. Brad is an ecologist and is currently studying foraging and habitat use of Southern Resident killer whales and health assessment of harbor and Dall’s porpoises.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites where the public may view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment. Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 50 million people each year. The Whale Trail is currently adding new sites along the North American west coast, from California to British Columbia.

The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State. Join us!

Fly-tying with Brita Fordice at Emerald Water Anglers
Aug 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.

These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.

She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.

Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.

EWA Fly Shop
August 23rd, 7 pm

Brita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. We’ll have some special materials ordered for the event and all fly tying materials will be 10% off for ticket holders.

–Doors open at 6:30
Where: C & P Coffee Company, 5612 California Ave SW

Sponsored by Nucor Steel

Harbor porpoise are one of the most abundant animals in the Salish Sea, yet little is known about them. Pacific Mammal Research is dedicated to understanding more about this poorly understood population, using techniques such as photo-ID surveys and passive acoustic technology.

Learn more about this shy and elusive species, and the research that is shedding new light on them.

Whale Trail founder Donna Sandstrom will also give an update on Governor Jay Inslee’s Orca Recovery Task Force and how you can become involved in protecting the southern resident orcas.

Join us as we kick off a new season of Orca Talks! Buy tickets in advance here!

About the Speaker

Dr. Cindy Elliser has conducted marine mammal research for over 15 years. She worked with Dr. Denise Herzing and the Wild Dolphin Project studying Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins in the Bahamas for 10 years before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2014 and founding Pacific Mammal Research to study marine mammals in the Salish Sea. She also is an adjunct biology/chemistry instructor at Skagit Valley College.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail is a series of sites to view orcas and other marine mammals from shore.

Many members of the team first met on the successful effort to return Springer, the orphaned orca, to her pod.

Sep 8 @ 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

The West Seattle Soccer Club is hosting a 50th Anniversary Celebration from 12:30 pm-3:30 pm this Saturday, September 8th at Sealth Stadium.

There will be U9 and U10 jamboree games throughout the day, food, music, and soccer activities for players of all ages. We’re excited to announce that WSSC’s founder Joe Smith and Seattle Sounders FC and USMNT player Jordan Morris will be in attendance.

The Whale Trail: Kin-directed prey-sharing behavior @ Dakota Place Park
Nov 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Family feast: Kin-directed prey sharing behavior in northern resident killer whales
Presentation by Brianna Wright

When: November 8th, 2018 7:00-8:30 Doors open at 6:15

Where: Dakota Place Park 4304 SW Dakota

Cost: (updated) $10 General Admission; Kids under 12 are Free

Advance tickets: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3739714

Presented by The Whale Trail

Resident killer whales prey almost exclusively on salmon and depend particularly on Chinook (the least common species of salmon in the Pacific Northwest), which makes up the majority of their known diet. Despite the importance of Chinook to the survival of individual killer whales, they frequently choose to share this critical resource with family members. Brianna Wright, Eva Stredulinsky, Graeme Ellis and Dr. John Ford conducted a 12-year study (2002-2014) examining patterns of prey sharing behavior among northern resident killer whales. In particular, the talk will discuss the prevalence of prey sharing between close maternal relatives, and the role that this cooperative behavior may have played in the evolution of this population’s unusually stable social structure.

A scientific article presenting the results from this study, entitled “Kin-directed food sharing promotes lifetime natal philopatry of both sexes in a population of fish-eating killer whales, Orcinus orca”, is available free of charge from the journal Animal Behavior at the following link: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003347216000737

About the Speaker

Brianna Wright holds a BSc. in Biology and Anthropology from the University of Victoria and a MSc. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia. She began her career in whale research as an undergraduate co-op student with Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s marine mammal research group in 2007, transitioning to full-time work as a research technician for the same team in 2008. Her graduate thesis used Dtags (a suction-cup attached device that records dive depth, body position and underwater sound) to investigate the fine-scale foraging behavior of resident killer whales. In 2014, Brianna graduated from UBC and returned to the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, where she currently works as a marine mammal biologist for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. In 2016, she published a paper with Eva Stredulinsky, Graeme Ellis and John Ford about prey sharing behavior by resident killer whales and its influence on the evolution of their unique social structure. This paper was awarded Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Paper of the Year award in 2016. Her recent research includes projects on resident killer whale population monitoring, feeding behavior and echolocation, as well as habitat modeling for large baleen whales to help reduce the impact of vessel strikes on these vulnerable populations.
