Tyrone Hashimoto performs – From Japan to Seattle @ Kenyon Hall
Aug 24 @ 7:30 pm

This will be Tyrone’s first official performance at Kenyon Hall. He’s a longtime friend of Pat Wright and mine, and served as host whenever the Total Experience Gospel Choir toured Japan. Every time he visits Seattle, we get together, often at the hall, and tell stories, sing songs, and reminisce about our many years as friends and musical colleagues. Recently Tyrone asked if he could perform publicly at Kenyon Hall with his elegant pianist, Miho Usuda, Seattle drummer extraordinaire Jeff Busch (who also toured Japan with us), and the gospel legend herself, Patrinell Wright. I readily agreed, and am looking forward to presenting his ensemble to our Kenyon Hall audience, and to accompanying Pat in one of our favorite songs. This concert is also a commemoration of commencement of Tyrone’s digital distribution and release of his new song, Mandela. Tyrone is a unique performer. He’s a composer, singer, and guitarist, and his concerts are filled with energy, positivity, and joy. No wonder Pat loves him!

Tickets and Reservations

Tickets for this special event are $10 general, and $8 seniors and students. Table seating is first come, first served, with a maximum of six at a table.

‘Be There’ Rally 2019 @ West Seattle Elementary School
Sep 4 @ 7:00 am – 8:00 am

The community is invited to attend the fourth annual Be There Rally at West Seattle Elementary on Wednesday, September 5th, from 7:00 am to 8:00 am. The school, in partnership with Seattle Housing Authority, High Point, is rolling out the red carpet and asking community leaders, school supporters, family and friends to line up to cheer, clap, and high-five students as they enter into the new school year.

School leaders are calling for 100 men and women to line the red carpet, dressed for success and ready to lead by example and cheer on High Point youth. Research shows that children whose family and community take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.

Your presence at the school on the first day will support efforts to build valuable partnerships with families and members of the community to support student learning and positive academic outcomes.

‘The Songwriter’s Guitar’ workshop with Jack Williams @ Kenyon Hall
Sep 21 @ 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

In addition to his evening performance, Jack has agreed to teach a daytime songwriting workshop from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. It’ll emphasize how the guitar (or other instrument) plays a vital role in making the music whole, rather than being merely a “chord vehicle” or something to hide behind when performing a song. There’ll be special emphasis on the “Guitar as Greek Chorus,” as accompanist, inspiration, commentator, colorist, comforter, crutch, and equal partner in songwriting. He’ll also lead a gentle discussion and critique of songs written or in progress by the workshop attendees.

Cost for the 3-hour workshop is $20 adults and $10 students. Those attending the workshop will receive a 50% discount to Jack’s evening performance.

Please visit www.jackwilliamsmusic.com for more information about our special guest artist.

Jack Williams performs @ Kenyon Hall
Sep 21 @ 7:30 pm

Saturday, September 21st, national touring singer-songwriter and master guitarist Jack Williams will return to Kenyon Hall in Seattle.

There’s a lot to love about a Jack Williams performance. For me it comes down to a phenomenal facility at the guitar combined with a deep knowledge of styles. His music, rooted in his native South Carolina, is shaped by a 60-year career of playing folk, rock, jazz, rhythm and blues, and the popular music of the 30s, 40s and 50s. He’s a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in the old Southern tradition, who illustrates each tale with his dazzling guitar work. Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, & Mary) called him the ‘best guitar player I’ve ever heard.” He has collaborated with many iconic recording artists of our time including Peter Yarrow, Tom Paxton, Mickey Newbury, and the late Harry Nilsson.

Tickets are $20 general and $18 seniors and students, with no table seating. Tickets are available at the door, or may be reserved by contacting 206-937-3613 or kenyonhall@earthlink.net

“Write YOUR Story” Weekly Writing Workshop @ Curious Kidstuff Toy Store
Sep 25 @ 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm

“Write YOUR Story” is now enrolling for fall 2019 writing workshops! These are free writing workshops for children 8-12.

Workshops run 3:15pm to 4:15pm, every Wednesday from September 25 to December
18. (There will be no class Nov. 13.)

All sessions are taught by West Seattle residents Julia Douthwaite Viglione, PhD, and Greg Estes.

Participation in the series is free of charge. In return for this unique opportunity, though, participants are expected to attend every class.

The fall 2019 theme is Journeys. We will read stories about: 1) The journey to a new home: Jean de Brunhoff’s “The Story of Babar,” 2) The initiation journey: Darcy Pattison’s “The River Dragon,” and 3) A maritime adventure: Gloria Rand’s “Aloha, Salty!”

The free writing workshops were established in 2012 in South Bend, Indiana by Notre Dame Professor Julia Douthwaite Viglione (French language and literature) who returned home to West Seattle last year and brought “Write YOUR Story” to Seattle. Join kids from local schools as we read and rewrite a classic children’s story. In the second half, children write their own stories and a great party is had at the end!

Ryegrass performs @ Kenyon Hall
Sep 28 @ 7:30 pm

We’re happy to bring back a Bluegrass band that’s been entertaining Northwest audiences since their first gig in 2001 at a used clothing store in Duvall. Having risen quickly from their modest beginnings, Ryegrass continues to perform all over the region in festivals, farmers’ markets, and fairs. Members of the band are Chip Diemond (bass), Paul Michel (mandolin, dobro, and vocals), Jim Hanna (guitar and vocals), John Burke (fiddle and vocals), and Steve Marx (banjo and vocals).

In describing their act, they write, “We have a lot of laughs playing together; at this stage in life, Ryegrass is a perfect combination of tradition, singer-songwriting, and men’s group.” We’re delighted to welcome them back to once again raise our roof.

An Evening with Michael Tomlinson @ Camp Long Lodge
Oct 6 @ 6:00 pm

I invite you to join me for a breezy autumn evening of songs and stories in the Lodge at Camp Long in West Seattle. It’s been nearly a year and a half since I’ve performed in Seattle and I’m looking forward to singing for you in this wonderful acoustic space. I like to perform early concerts on Sundays, so you’re back home by dark and in your jammies before nighttime. You know, ‘cause o’ the scary stuff in the bushes and all. (by the way, there is no Seahawks game this Sunday)

My intention at my concerts is always to entertain and delight you, but also to send you home with more hope and a feeling of being present, connected and loved. This is a small venue, holding just over 70 people. It’s sold out the last several times, so this is an advance-purchase-only event. It’s a perfect size for what I love doing; an up close concert that is not really a performance, but just me talking with you and singing for you in a beautiful space. I’m really looking forward to spending an autumn evening together.
~Michael Tomlinson

Miles and Karina – The Fairy Tale Series @ Kenyon Hall
Oct 19 @ 7:30 pm

Step into the magical world of silent film pioneering director Lotte
Reiniger (1899-1981). Using only paper and scissors, she animated common stories in an uncommon way, with stop-motion animation—each frame a work of art. We’ll screen Doctor Dolittle, Sleeping Beauty, The Grasshopper and the Ant, and two commercials Reiniger made for theaters in the 1920s. In this series Miles and Karina play accordion, guitar, violin, viola, toy piano, glockenspiel, bells, percussion, and ukulele.

For more information, please visit www.milesandkarina.com.

Front reserved table seats are $14. Row seating is $12 general and $10 seniors. With a reservation, row seating is only $10 general and $8 seniors. Elementary, middle, and high school students are $5.
