Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings

We need help from all of our parents and teachers to continue raising funds to support school initiatives. We strongly encourage everyone to renew or start a new membership for only $15 per person.

To join, simply attend our next PTA meeting or register online (http://www.fpepta.org). This gives you a vote (voice) on how your fundraising dollars are spent towards our amazing programs: music & art, enhanced assemblies, the Backpack program, student wellness, parent education events, and much more.

General Membership Meetings for the 2018/19 school year will take place at the school cafeteria, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Exploring Our Collective Memory: An Invitation to Reflect on U.S. History @ Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish
Feb 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Our Lady of Guadalupe Immigrant Ministry is excited to host Professor Catherine Punsalan-Manlimos, PhD from the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture at Seattle University on Thursday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the School Hall.

Together, we will explore our collective memory with regards to our immigration history. Most of us in the U.S. today are either immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. With the exception of our Native American brothers and sisters and the descendants of enslaved free peoples from Africa, many of us or our forebears immigrated to this country seeking a better future and freedom from persecution, violence, or poverty. Reflecting on the history of U.S. immigration in light of Catholic Social Traditions can remind us why fighting for policies that honor the dignity of our migrant brothers and sisters is a matter of faith and a matter of justice.

OPEN HOUSE: Little Pilgrim School, a program for children 2-5 years old

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2018
11:00 AM – 1:30 PM
9140 California Ave. SW

Celebrating 65 years of providing quality education in this community! Established in 1952, Little Pilgrim Preschool is nestled at the base of Fauntleroy Park in West Seattle. Our philosophy and purpose is to encourage the whole child – to help each to grow intellectually, spiritually, physically, creatively, socially and emotionally. Children enjoy a rich, play-based curriculum that not only prepares them for kindergarten, but also instills in them a lifelong love of learning. Whether finger painting, building with blocks, running on the playground or on a field trip to the neighborhood grocery, every experience is seen as a learning opportunity.

Bring the whole family to play, tour the beautiful school spaces, meet the teachers, ask questions and pick up enrollment information for fall classes. For more information, please contact the Little Pilgrim School Director at 206-932-5600, Lorrie@fauntleroyucc.org.

Mar 27 @ 7:00 pm

West Seattle High School welcomes parents from the community.

Talking to your kid about tech and sexuality is hard! Words like “Media,” “Privacy,” “Safety,” “Porn,” and even “Sex” have different meanings than they did a generation ago.

Come learn from Jo Langford, MA, who has two decades of experience working with t/weens. She will be leading a discussion on how to connect with your child/ren in order to help them make informed decisions about and learn tools to deal with sexuality, growing up with technology, and relationships with confidence and seriousness–all while having fun along the way and doing as little harm to themselves and their peers as possible. This event will be held on March 27 at 7pm in the school Library. Please mark your calendar!

Bystander Intervention Workshop–Anti-Hate Alaska Junction @ Admiral Congregational Church
May 19 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Anti-Hate Alaska Junction works to reduce hate in our neighborhood by providing Bystander Intervention Workshops.

The leader reviews brain science, including the reality of emotional responses, their effects on brain chemistry, and the resulting triggering of our fight/flight/freeze survival responses. Participants apply new knowledge and practice new skills by running scenarios of hate-based interactions with the goal of de-escalating the situations. Working as an aggressor, a target, or an intervening bystander, participants learn by doing, not by listening.

There will also be an opportunity to have an extra practice session on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 pm.

The workshop is FREE, but donations are accepted. To register, email antihate3@gmail.com or just walk in. Visit our website at www.antihatealaskajunction.wordpress.com

This workshop will be the third of four scheduled to take place in 2019.

Emergency hubs drill @ Multiple locations
Jun 1 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

2 West Seattle locations listed at end:

If you drive around Seattle this Saturday, you might notice some slightly unusual neighborhood gatherings—with whiteboards, radio equipment, folks in safety vests, and more. What’s going on? It’s the latest city-wide disaster drill carried out by Seattle’s Emergency Hubs and the Seattle Auxiliary Communications Service, and the participants are citizens from all walks of life, united by a mission to assist at a time of major need.

Saturday’s “Seattle’s Fault” exercise will bring together volunteers from two organizations whose missions align closely: Seattle Emergency Hubs, a grass- roots, neighborhood network of community members who foster hyper-local organizational and communication resources; and Seattle Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS), a volunteer organization of amateur (“ham”) radio experts operating under the auspices of the Seattle Office of Emergency Management.

The drill simulates conditions the day after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake along the Seattle Fault has caused extensive infrastructure damage. The damage from such a quake would likely include a failure of grid power and cellular service, making communications and emergency services a challenge. Because the Hubs are key gathering points for neighborhoods, communications between the Hubs, ACS, and the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) are critical. Much of the exercise will involve moving simulated messages around the city using field- deployed, off-grid communications.

The key goals of the exercise are:

• Activate multiple Emergency Hubs and Seattle ACS, emphasizing reliable, efficient, accurate message management and documentation. Exercise participants will use voice as well as data communications via radio, throughout the city. (Technical highlights include using office-style telephones and email systems, routed entirely over ham radio frequencies and running on battery or solar power.)
• Demonstrate, practice, and assess the ability to communicate up and down the various levels of the response structure, based on the Incident Command System (ICS), which spells out a hierarchical, yet flexible, means of managing emergency situations.
• Nurture strong working relationships among Emergency Communication Hub members and ACS members, through team problem solving and practice.

Exercise Scenario
In an event such as the one this exercise portrays, the neighborhood Hubs would mobilize to assist with the immediate needs of residents, especially those who may need emergency services. The ACS would also have activated shortly after the scope of the outage was known, with sector sites around the city providing situation reports and helping coordinate emergency and logistical responses.

“It’s really important for us to practice our plans” said Cindi Barker, Volunteer Coordinator for the Hubs. “We need know that our planning is going to help the community. It’s also a great way to meet people who are interested in the hubs and finding out how they can be better prepared.”

“Seattle’s Fault is the latest in a series of emergency exercises that helps our membership to continually hone their skills and upgrade, deploy, and test their equipment,” said David Wilma, Deputy Director of ACS. “With each successive exercise, we aim to sharpen our skills as well as our technical infrastructure, to ensure communications capabilities in a difficult situation.”

Exercise locations
Radio Locations: City of Seattle Emergency Operations Center (ACS PIO on-site), 105 5th Ave S Enter at corner of 5th S and S Washington Maple Leaf Park, Roosevelt Way NE and NE 84th St. Ella Bailey Park, 2601 W. Smith St. Madison Park, west of 43rd Ave E and east of the playground equipment.

West Seattle High School 2019 all-school reunion
Jun 1 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-SCHOOL REUNION

First off – please note that we’re shaking things up a bit this year! With accessibility issues of many of our honored guests, and a very small cast of volunteers managing this event, we’ve opted for a MUCH simpler approach than in years past. Instead of breaking out into classrooms, we are designating tables for each range of years in or around the Commons, and for some in the Library. Think very large open house vibe. As laid out in the program map, tables will be organized chronologically by year range, so most of you will be next to the table of classes in the range above or behind you. No more climbing stairs, hunting for elusive rooms, traversing a daunting length of hallways, and dashing between classrooms to find and greet friends and family from other years.

We thank you in advance for supporting this change! As always, we welcome suggestions for improvement (highly recommended to be accompanied by offers for help ;) ), in our effort to maximize community and rapport while minimizing effort for planners and guests alike.

2019 Schedule of Events

4:00 – 5:30 pm View the Classic Cars showcased on SW Stevens outside the Historical entrance

4:00 – 4:30 pm Sign in, pick up programs, name tag and roam the halls

Sanislo Elementary auction @ SSC Brockey Center
Jun 1 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

This year the auction is going to be at The Brockey Center at South Seattle College on June 1st, 2019 at 6p. Admission to the auction is $40 per person and we hope you consider joining us.

Sanislo Elementary School is building a network of dedicated individuals from throughout our community whose support and passion helps increase the chances of success for our children. Last year at Sanislo while we had a goal of raising just $20,000, we ended up exceeding this goal by 50%. We raised $30,000 thanks to all of your donations to Sanislo! The school used this money to support: mindfulness/social emotional learning, a learning garden, and scholarships for after school enrichment programs.

This year our need is even greater. I interviewed key stakeholders including the Principal in order to determine what aspect of the school was in greatest need of support. One of the largest challenges the school is facing is the increasing age of the books and other instruction materials. Our children are struggling to experience the joy of learning and self discovery partially because the average age of their books is more than 10 years old! Our library has become out of touch with reality and the children are not as motivated to participate in self guided learning as children at other schools. Help us bring the joy of learning to our children.

Our annual auction is coming up soon! We hope you can join us once again in supporting educational equity. Come enjoy an evening of fun with us: dinner, dancing, drinks, silent auction, and dancing
