6:00 pm, Wed., June 20, 2018, C & P Coffee Co., 5612 California Ave. SWSPECIAL KIDS NIGHT 6 PM START TIME
Kick off school’s end and the start of summer reading season with acclaimed authors Suzanne Selfors and Dana Simpson in a magical evening for kids and the adults they bring with them.
Suzanne Selfors is a national best-selling author who writes for kids of all ages. She’s received five Junior Library Guild awards and earned starred reviews from Kirkus, School Library Journal, Library Media Connection and Publisher’s Weekly. The Sasquatch Escape won the WA State Book Award and was an Amazon Best Children’s Book. Suzanne’s most recent books are Wedgie and Gizmo vs. the Toof (2018) from Harper Collins/Katherine Tegan Publishers and Spirit Riding Free: Lucky and the Mustangs of Miradero (2017) from DreamWorks/Little Brown. The animated series, Spirit Riding Free, is on Netflix. Though her books can be found all over the world, Suzanne lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest where she hopes it is her destiny to write stories forever after.
Dana Claire Simpson, a native of Gig Harbor, Washington, first caught the eyes of devoted comics readers with the internet strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the 2009 Comic Strip Superstar contest, she developed the strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn (originally known as Heavenly Nostrils), which is now syndicated in over 200 newspapers worldwide. There are five book collections: Phoebe and Her Unicorn, Unicorn on a Roll, Unicorn vs. Goblins, Razzle Dazzle Unicorn, and Unicorn Crossing, and a graphic novel, The Magic Storm. Simpson’s books have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, and have won the Washington State Book Award and the Pacific Northwest Book Award. She lives with her husband and her cat in Santa Barbara, California.
The Favorite Poem Project, a vital part of WordsWest’s monthly literary events, invites a community member to share a favorite poem and information about his or her organization. On June 20, we welcome the Summer Reading Table and a favorite poem read by Jenny Cole from indie bookstore Page 2 Books.

At Easy Street Records in The Junction:
Long before the Grammy nominations, sold-out performances at Carnegie Hall, and Hollywood friends and lovers, Ryan Adams fronted a Raleigh, North Carolina, outfit called Whiskeytown. Lumped into the burgeoning alt-country movement, the band soon landed a major label deal and recorded an instant classic: Strangers Almanac. That’s when tour manager Thomas O’Keefe met the young musician. For the next three years, Thomas was at Ryan’s side: on the tour bus, in the hotels, backstage at the venues. Packed with behind-the-scenes road stories, and, yes, tales of rock star debauchery, Thomas O’Keefe’s new book, “Waiting to Derail: Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown, Alt Country’s Brilliant Wreck” provides a firsthand glimpse into Ryan Adams at the most meaningful and mythical stage of his career. Join us for a special author reading & signing event on 8/3. Free & all ages!

Each summer, a new group of young writers hones their craft through Southwest Youth & Family Services’ innovative program called Young Writers Workshop or “The Boot.” The program is designed for youth who may be low income or immigrants to express themselves and share their experiences of family, loss, hardship and love through poetry and verse.
“Poetry is my alliance. Not only speaking but creating, together penetrating that blank spot in your mind, the doubt…”
– Poetry by Puao Savusa, The Boot – 2011But The Boot, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is much more than a poetry workshop. The ten-week intensive writing program allows students to earn high school credit for their participation and to receive a stipend for their work. This is made possible with funding from the City of Seattle Summer Youth Employment Program and the Department of Education and Early Learning.
The poems and short stories they write are then published and presented to their family, friends, and community. When The Boot began in 1993 it established that, “The Boot [magazine] is for, by and about youth. Featuring poetry, essays and short stories, the writers and editorial staff, most of whom are high school dropouts, focus their work around personal experiences and life on the ‘streets.’ ” The name was originally chosen by participants since they felt they had been “booted” out of school. The classroom where the workshop still take place has held moments of laughter and moments of silence to honor students who were lost.
On August 9th, 2018, Southwest Youth & Family Services will host a night of poetry and storytelling by the 2018 Boot writers and honor the history of the program as presented by the founding facilitator, Andrew Epstein and past participants. Doors open at 6pm at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW). Although the event is free, SWYFS asks guests to register at https://bit.ly/2m4R51I

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.
These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.
She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.
Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.
EWA Fly Shop
August 23rd, 7 pmBrita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. This year the ministry fair will also focus on explaining the unique structure behind each of our four ministry areas – Stewardship, Worship, Outreach, and Discipleship. All are welcome! The leadership team looks forward to seeing you there!
Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors.

First showing in the area of the screening LIKE.
A one-hour documentary about the impact of social media on our lives.
Seattle Lutheran High School invites you to a free screening of LIKE. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.
IndieFlix goal for this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other. (Go here) to view the official trailer of the documentary.

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings
We need help from all of our parents and teachers to continue raising funds to support school initiatives. By becoming a member of PTA and attending meetings, parents can also stay informed of the events and decisions taking place at our school. We strongly encourage everyone to renew or start a new membership for only $15 per person.
To join, simply attend our next PTA meeting or register online (http://www.fpepta.org). This gives you a vote (voice) on how your fundraising dollars are spent towards our amazing programs: music & art, enhanced assemblies, the Backpack program, student wellness, parent education events, and much more.
General Membership Meetings for the 2018/19 school year will take place at the school cafeteria, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
All are welcome to attend. Child-care services will likely be available for these meetings. Contact board@fpepta.org with questions.

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.
NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents
With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:
v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements
v State and Federal testing High School requirements
v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?
v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school
For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES
Come and learn more about this new requirement

Presented by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society:
Public historian Lorraine McConaghy offers a “Readers’ Theater,” where audience members participate in reading a script out aloud on “Washington at War: The Evergreen State in World War I.”
Lorraine McConaghy begins the program with an illustrated introduction to the war’s themes before offering a “Readers’ Theater,” a script that is read aloud together, allowing participants to speak the history they are discovering. The script includes excerpts from newspapers, diaries, writings, speeches and correspondence, and is based on extensive research in primary source material focused on the war’s impact on Washington – and how Washington impacted the war. The reading covers the period 1914-1919. Lorraine will tailor her remarks to West Seattle, on the Great War home front.
Lorraine McConaghy is a public historian. At the Museum of History & Industry and Washington State History Museum, her work as historian and curator has dealt with Washington at war during the Treaty War of 1855-56, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II.
This talk is presented by Humanities Washington, the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, and The Seattle Public Library. It is part of Southwest Stories, a series offering monthly presentations on the history of West Seattle and the Duwamish Peninsula on the third Sundays at the five branches in West Seattle.
Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Presented by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society:
At the Delridge Library: Join us for an interview with Mas Tahara, featuring fish-tales of the “Tengu Fishing Club.”
The “Tengu Fishing Club” was founded by one of several Japanese-American tackle shops located in downtown Seattle. One particular shop started a salmon fishing competition, later called the “Tengu Fishing Club” around 1936-1937. Fishing competitions like this were common at this time but the Japanese-American population wasn’t welcomed during the typical salmon fishing season in the spring or summer. They began their own tradition, with the distinct difference of welcoming any participants. Held during the cold winter months of November through January, each weekend of the competition would document who had caught the largest fish, and the ultimate winner was chosen at the end of the 12-week period.
Mas Tahara is a longtime Seattle resident and former University of Washington microbiology researcher. He chaired the “Tengu Fishing Club” for over 40 years and published a book about his experiences called “Tengu – Tales Told by Fishermen and Women of The Tengu Club of Seattle.”
Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society as part of its Southwest Stories series offering presentations on the history of West Seattle and the Duwamish Peninsula.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017
What is truly “new” in the New Year? How much of our optimism or pessimism for what’s to come has to do with what’s happening now, and how much has to do with unresolved collisions? On January 16, 2019, writers E. J. Koh and Juan Carlos Reyes wrestle with “Past and Future Selves”: the intangible apparitions that haunt our everyday lives.
E. J. Koh is the author of A Lesser Love, winner of the Pleiades Editors Prize, and her memoir The Magical Language of Others is forthcoming from Tin House Books. Her work has appeared in Academy of American Poets, Boston Review, Columbia Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Prairie Schooner. She received fellowships from The American Literary Translators Association, Kundiman, The MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, and elsewhere. She lives in Seattle, Washington.
Juan Carlos Reyes has published the novella A Summer’s Lynching (Quarterly West) and the fiction chapbook Elements of a Bystander (Arcadia Press). His stories, poems and essays have appeared in Ascentos Review, KGB Lit, and Hawai’i Review, among others. He is a 2018 Jack Straw Writers Fellow and is currently an Assistant Professor of creative writing at Seattle University. He is also the chief editor at Big Fiction magazine. He is the recipient of the Artist Trust 2018 LaSalle Storyteller Award in Fiction.
The Favorite Poem Project, a vital part of WordsWest’s monthly literary events, invites a community member to share a favorite poem and information about his or her organization. On January 16th, we welcome a favorite poem from Fawn Coussens, MSPT, owner and physical therapist at Kinetic Physical Therapy, located one block south of the West Seattle Junction.
WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw. Grant funding from Poets & Writers, Inc. allows WordsWest to pay featured writers for their time and talent.

Join us to hear Betsy Bell read from her chronicle, “Open Borders: A Personal Story of Love, Loss and Anti-War Activism.”
Betsy Bell chronicles her personal journey during the 1980s as an anti-war activist and the activities of Target Seattle. In 1983, she travels to Tashkent, Seattle’s Sister City in Uzbekistan and discovers the power of people-to-people connections across political boundaries. She explores how ordinary citizens can be transformed into agents of peace.
A mother, grandmother, and businesswoman, Betsy Bell is a longtime justice activist. Reaching across boundaries that separate us from ‘The Other’ has been a constant thread in Betsy’s life. You can learn more about Betsy Bell by visiting her website.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017
Join Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard for an illustrated book discussion of “Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred.”
Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard’s new coffee-table book showcases the most compelling and essential of the more than 1,800 “Seattle Now & Then” photo-history columns that Dorpat has produced for the Sunday magazine of “The Seattle Times” for more than 36 years, since January 1982.
The book covers views from all directions throughout Seattle, highlighting its native roots and earliest days as a city (and its earliest photographs), and includes a special, four-foot-wide gatefold that reveals the city’s massive growth from the prospect of Queen Anne Hill.
Dramatic images comparing “then” to “now” explore the city’s regrades, bridges, thoroughfares and countless Seattle landmarks. The Great Seattle Fire, the Gold Rush, Pike Place Market, the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair get attention, as do breathtaking panoramas, all in a size and clarity rarely seen.
Seattle public historian Paul Dorpat and co-author Jean Sherrard, who has served as Dorpat’s “now” photographer for the past 12 years, will be available after the talk to personally inscribe books.
This event at the Southwest branch library is part of the Words, Writers & West Seattle series which features writers connected to the Duwamish Peninsula. Programs are held monthly on the second Thursday evenings. Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.
Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.
Space is limited at library events. Please come early to make sure you get a seat. Due to the fire code, we can’t exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms.

Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance will be happening for the second year, this March 21-24, 2019 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in the Delridge neighborhood. Intersections showcases performers in improv, sketch, stand-up, burlesque, storytelling, spoken word, music, theatre, and dance; however, it doesn’t end there.Intersections remains committed to its focus on equity, inclusion, and representation. “Seattle is a diverse city,” says Jekeva Phillips, one member of the all-womxn team, “Why are we only seeing the same faces and hearing the same voices?” Phillips (who is featured in City Arts Magazine’s 2018 Future List) was approached about the project by Natasha Ransom, and Kinzie Shaw of FEELINGS, an Improv duo which aims to amplify intersectional feminism in the face of a white-cis-hetero patriarchy.
The four-day festival will feature a myriad of comedy-related acts from Seattle’s best and brightest POC, Queer, Trans, non-binary, and neurodiverse performers. Each show is a different experience loaded with a variety of acts. No show in the festival will be the same, so the Intersections team strongly encourages patrons to be a part of it all. “We are so excited to be in the audience for this festival,” Say co-founders Natasha Ransom and Kinzie Shaw “The talent is just unbelievably good and we want to soak as much of it in as possible.”

West Seattle High School welcomes parents from the community.
Talking to your kid about tech and sexuality is hard! Words like “Media,” “Privacy,” “Safety,” “Porn,” and even “Sex” have different meanings than they did a generation ago.
Come learn from Jo Langford, MA, who has two decades of experience working with t/weens. She will be leading a discussion on how to connect with your child/ren in order to help them make informed decisions about and learn tools to deal with sexuality, growing up with technology, and relationships with confidence and seriousness–all while having fun along the way and doing as little harm to themselves and their peers as possible. This event will be held on March 27 at 7pm in the school Library. Please mark your calendar!
