Sunday, April 21, at 7:30 – The Ultimate Family Variety Show

Mentalist Scotty Walsh and comedy juggler Matt Baker happen to be in town at the same time, and have agreed to return to Kenyon hall to put together a show for folks looking for a way to cap off their Easter Sunday celebrations. INCLUSIVITY: The Esoterics in Concert @ Holy Rosary Catholic Church
May 18 @ 8:00 pm

The Esoterics will continue its 26th season, focusing on choral programs that explore poetry and music inspired by virtues of integrity that are so crucial in these divisive times.

In the second program, The Esoterics will explore the human power of togetherness, INCLUSIVITY. This performance will trace the origins of “otherness” in the first moments of infancy, and explore how these emotions develop into exclusion, both interpersonally and in society. The resulting divisiveness and xenophobia cause persecution, violence, shunning, and the loneliness of exile. In the face of such conflict, the program will advocate for philoxenia–the acceptance of strangers and desire to show hospitality–promoting the idea that we are stronger together, as an interdependent human community.

Singing texts in English, Hebrew, Indonesian, Mandarin, Quechua, and Spanish by Chairil Anwar, José María Arguedas, Li Ba, e. e. cummings, Vivian Eden, Bai Ju-Yi, Amy Beth Kirsten, Salman Masalha, Li Shang-Yin, Donald Woods Winnicott, Malala Yousafzai, Xu Yuan-Zhong, Chen Zi-Ang, The Esoterics’ INCLUSIVITY will feature music by Eric Banks, Melissa Dunphy, Sivan Eldar, Marisa Sharon Hartanto, Ted Hearne, David Lang, Kala Pierson, Christopher Theofanidis, Augusta Read Thomas, and Chen Yi.

The Esoterics will offer three performances of INCLUSIVITY.

Please join us as we promote acceptance and interdependence.

Program list:

  • Know the Rules (2019) by Eric BanksTogether (2012) by Melissa Dunphy
  • The song about the child (2015) by Sivan Eldar
  •  Doa [A prayer] (2014) by Marisa Sharon Hartanto
  • What it might say (2015) by Ted Hearne
  • Make peace (2016) by David Lang
  • Mother of exiles (2018) by Kala Pierson
  • November prayer (2007) by Christopher Theofanidis
  • !hope (2017) by Augusta Read Thomas
  • Two Chinese folksongs (2003) by Chen Yi

YOUTH: Teen Arts and Opportunities Fair @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (West Seattle)
May 25 @ 4:30 pm – 8:30 pm

For the past several months, three teens have been working diligently to produce YOUTH: Teen Arts and Opportunities Fair, an entirely youth-created event. This year, the Teen Arts and Opportunities Fair’s focus is hip-hop, a genre familiar to many teens and one that can serve as a gateway to the rest of the arts world. During the course of the fair, attendees will participate in hip-hop workshops, such as Intro to DJing, talk to several of TeenTix’s partners, and listen to well-known teen artists perform live. The event will culminate in a hip-hop performance featuring some of Seattle’s premier youth dancers.

Event Timeline:

4:30 – 6:30: Tabling, pop-up performances, and workshops

6:30 – 7: Doors open for dance performance, dinner is served

7 – 8:30: Dance performance

Event Information:

Hip-hop, with its powerful tie to social justice, is an art form that sparks societal change. Hip-hop dance, specifically, is a valuable tool for teens to be exposed to. However, dance can be expensive to participate in or to experience as an audience member. By hosting a free event, the project leads hope to connect with youth who might not otherwise have the chance to participate in dance and showcase the power of hip-hop. As well, this event will serve as a platform for youth to perform in a safe environment, allowing other teens to learn more and celebrate their peers and their accomplishments. Finally, this is an event by teens, for teens. Because the leaders of this Fair are youth who already participate deeply in Seattle’s art scene, the Teen Arts and Opportunities Fair will cater to the needs and desires of teens who might not otherwise engage with an event like this. The teen leaders hope the Fair’s activities will work to build a community of youth, whether they consider themselves an artist or not, who have connected and learned from one another.

The students involved are all members of The New Guard, TeenTix’s youth board, and have secured funding, food donations, space, and performers for the 2019 fair. The project leads were inspired by the example of New Guard alum Abbey Scobee, who produced the original fair last May. This year, they hope to put their own creative spin on the already successful event.

About the Youth Leaders:

YOUTH: Teen Arts and Opportunities Fair, was visualized by three members of TeenTix’s New Guard: Kaylyn Ready, Anya Shukla, and Neha Gupta. Kaylyn, a senior at Nathan Hale, is an advocate for equitable arts consumption and a dancer in the Seattle hip-hop community. She wanted to create this fair to share the gift that is the Seattle hip-hop community with as many people as possible and to show how dance can be used as a form of expression for everyone. Anya, a sophomore at Lakeside, is a proponent of racial equity in the arts and strongly believes in increased arts access. Since hip-hop is such an accessible medium, she feels it is the perfect way to increase teen interest in the arts. Neha, a junior at Eastside Prep, strongly advocates for equitable arts access for teens from all backgrounds and wishes to see further teen engagement in the Seattle art scene. She hopes to empower other youth to get involved and to begin cultivating a more diverse teen art community.

About TeenTix:

TeenTix exists to break down the barriers that prevent teens from accessing art in our community, such as ticket or admission cost, not knowing where to look for events, navigating transportation around the city, and feeling insecure around arts-going if there’s no one in their lives already championing the arts. TeenTix builds a bright future for our city by empowering young people to take an active role in shaping their arts community as audience members, critics, influencers, advocates, patrons, and leaders.

The New Guard is formally an arts leadership and administrative training program for teens, but really this group is the heart and soul of TeenTix. New Guardians play a central role in guiding the development of TeenTix programs and events, identifying organizational values and serving as the primary teen ambassadors for TeenTix, AND they participate in high-level decision-making alongside our Board of Directors and Advisory Council. The 2018/19 New Guard consists of 48 teens, 8 of whom serve on the New Guard Leadership Board acting as the program’s primary administrators with mentorship from TeenTix’s Executive Director.

The West Seattle Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present 19th Century Pops, featuring works of Beethoven and Rossini. Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony in D major has a humorous and happy air, and will be paired with bel canto arias, and the Overture to Rossini’s “Thieving Magpie”. Irresistible melodies abound in a program that blurs the line between classical and popular music.

This enchanting evening will be brought to life under the direction of Dr. Anna Wittstruck, who joins us from the University of Puget Sound where she is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra. She has conducted in some of central Europe’s most prestigious halls and across the United States and Asia, and in Latin America. We’re honored to have her with us for the exciting finale to a very special season!

Dr. Dawn Padula, mezzo-soprano, and featured vocalist of these flowing arias, is Director of Vocal Studies at UPS, and has acclaimed performance experience in opera and live concerts.

West Seattle High School 2019 all-school reunion
Jun 1 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-SCHOOL REUNION

First off – please note that we’re shaking things up a bit this year! With accessibility issues of many of our honored guests, and a very small cast of volunteers managing this event, we’ve opted for a MUCH simpler approach than in years past. Instead of breaking out into classrooms, we are designating tables for each range of years in or around the Commons, and for some in the Library. Think very large open house vibe. As laid out in the program map, tables will be organized chronologically by year range, so most of you will be next to the table of classes in the range above or behind you. No more climbing stairs, hunting for elusive rooms, traversing a daunting length of hallways, and dashing between classrooms to find and greet friends and family from other years.

We thank you in advance for supporting this change! As always, we welcome suggestions for improvement (highly recommended to be accompanied by offers for help ;) ), in our effort to maximize community and rapport while minimizing effort for planners and guests alike.

2019 Schedule of Events

4:00 – 5:30 pm View the Classic Cars showcased on SW Stevens outside the Historical entrance

4:00 – 4:30 pm Sign in, pick up programs, name tag and roam the halls

4:30 – 5:30 pm Individual Class Reunions in the Commons (or Library)

5:00 – 5:30 pm Hall of Fame Member’s video plays in the Theater

5:30 – 7:00 pm Presentations in the Theater: Scholarships Announcements, Recognition of the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1969, Hall of Fame Induction

And….

4:00 – 6:45 pm WSHS Baseball Team selling Mariners Tickets to benefit the WSHS Baseball

4:00 – 6:45 pm Refreshments available for purchase to benefit the Student Booster Club programs

On top of it all, Kate is one of the most approachable women in the industry, who loves to break down all facets of our sport to all who are interested.

Sanislo Elementary auction @ SSC Brockey Center
Jun 1 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

This year the auction is going to be at The Brockey Center at South Seattle College on June 1st, 2019 at 6p. Admission to the auction is $40 per person and we hope you consider joining us.

Sanislo Elementary School is building a network of dedicated individuals from throughout our community whose support and passion helps increase the chances of success for our children. Last year at Sanislo while we had a goal of raising just $20,000, we ended up exceeding this goal by 50%. We raised $30,000 thanks to all of your donations to Sanislo! The school used this money to support: mindfulness/social emotional learning, a learning garden, and scholarships for after school enrichment programs.

This year our need is even greater. I interviewed key stakeholders including the Principal in order to determine what aspect of the school was in greatest need of support. One of the largest challenges the school is facing is the increasing age of the books and other instruction materials. Our children are struggling to experience the joy of learning and self discovery partially because the average age of their books is more than 10 years old! Our library has become out of touch with reality and the children are not as motivated to participate in self guided learning as children at other schools. Help us bring the joy of learning to our children.

Our annual auction is coming up soon! We hope you can join us once again in supporting educational equity. Come enjoy an evening of fun with us: dinner, dancing, drinks, silent auction, and dancing

West Seattle Community Orchestras’ spring finale @ Chief Sealth IHS Auditorium
Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm

“Out of This World!” West Seattle Orchestras’ spectacular spring season finale

Leading the evening, the Intermediate Orchestra under the direction of Mike Jauregui will trip you out of the universe with Holst’s “Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity” and “Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space.”

On a more serious, down-to-earth note the premiere of “Anthem to Courage”, written by West Seattle resident and WSCO musician Robert Duisberg, will be presented in honor of local artist and remarkable survivor, “Brenda.” In the words of the composer, the compelling main theme, the Amabile section, is a sort of “love song without words,a answered by a heroic brass chorus. All is framed by an Andante Solenne, a solemn processional, with chimes marking the march of our time as mortals, ending in the hopeful heroic strain of a vanishing solo horn.”

The West Seattle Wind Symphony portion of the concert, conducted by Anton Coleman, includes the haunting “O Magnum Mysterium,” written by Morten Lauridsen, an internationally revered composer with roots in the Pacific Northwest. The concert will conclude with “Give Us This Day,” composed by the late David Maslanka, a prolific composer for orchestra and wind ensembles. Pianist Dayana Capulong joins the WSCO Wind Symphony for this unusual piece featuring full wind ensemble with piano.

Very exciting and first time for the festival, four local Food Innovation Network (FIN) entrepreneurs will offer their diverse menus. FIN runs a business “incubator” which enables these entrepreneurs by launching and growing their businesses through its outreach efforts – e.g., placing them at area farmers markets and other venues such as community events and neighborhood festivals. Visit FIN’s website at https://foodinnovationnetwork.org to find out more about the full scope its activities. The four vendors participating in the festival are East&West Catering, providing African inspired samosas, kabobs and spicy red rice; Boujee Food&Things, featuring soul food desserts and sandwiches; Mama Tila, preparing authentic Mexican dishes; and Monique’s Hot Kitchen, whose items may include Kenyan roasted corn, fried potatoes, and mendazi (African donuts). Each of these food vendors are highlighted at FIN’s news-stories site at https://foodinnovationnetwork.org/news-stories/

Two food trucks will be at the festival. Tabassum, features authentic Central Asian street food, including savory meat and vegetarian hand pies and two types salads; and popular West Seattle truck Thai U Up, offers its full complement of Thai dishes.

If you’re looking for that special dessert, Blue Bird Ice Cream, Unsweetened Tooth, and Dolcetta Sweets will have booths in the vendor area behind Zeeks and Whiskey West.

And last but not least, West Seattle Thriftway will be grilling burgers from 11:00 am to approximately 3:00 pm in front of the store as a fundraiser to benefit the festival (suggested donation $7 for burger, chips and a soft drink) as they have so generously done year after year.

Arts in Nature Festival 2019, day 2 @ Camp Long
Jun 30 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

20th Annual Arts in Nature Festival
Free festival featuring 40+ local artists, food trucks, beer garden and family-friendly fun at Camp Long in West Seattle

Unlike any other festival, the 20th annual Arts in Nature Festival will feature live musical performances, interactive art installations, creative nature-based activities and more, set in the lush 68-acre landscape of Camp Long, Seattle’s only campground. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30, Seattle Pride weekend. Proudly produced by Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA), this year’s theme is “Harmony” and the festival is free to attend.

Arts in Nature Festival: Harmony
June 29 & 30, 2019
Saturday, 11am – 9pm / Sunday, 11am – 6pm
Camp Long
5200 35th Ave SW, Seattle

In addition to interactive art activities and games for all ages, this year’s lineup will include over 40 local artists across a variety of creative disciplines, including 8 interactive art installations set in Camp Long’s rustic cabins. The growing lineup includes local favorites like Daniel Pak, Cherdonna Sinatra, NW Tap Connection, Angelina Villalobos, and many others.

Create your own masterpieces and enjoy cool sights and sounds in Seattle’s only campground. A convoy of local food trucks will be available, and adults can wet their whistle at our festival beer garden. Activities abound for kids and adults. Become immersed in your local environment and experience the beauty that exists at the intersection of art, nature and neighborhood.

You can learn more about the Arts in Nature Festival on the DNDA website, www.dnda.org/festival. For more information contact the DNDA office at (206) 935-2999 or email festival@dnda.org.

About Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA):
Since 1996, DNDA has brought together neighbors, nonprofits, businesses and local government to sustain a vibrant and thriving Delridge community. Integrating art, nature and neighborhood, DNDA includes seven affordable housing properties, the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, and Nature Consortium—an environmental sector of DNDA’s programs that connects community members to the natural world.

SOLD OUT! Acoustic Blues with Orville Johnson, Grant Dermody, and John Miller @ Kenyon Hall
Jul 5 @ 7:30 pm

Update: Sold out!

Hall favorites Orville, Grant, and John haven’t performed together recently, because Grant now lives in Louisiana. As soon as we heard that he was going to be visiting Seattle in July, we asked them to once again grace our stage. Orville’s expansive vocals and expressive Dobro, Grant’s sweet Harmonica, and John’s complementary guitar combine to produce a barrage of beautiful music, performed as only these pros can do it.

For more information, please visit orvillejohnson.com, grantdermody.com, or johnmillerguitar.com.

Jul 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Northern Ballard performs at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor). More from C & P:

Since all the hipsters moved in, Northern Ballard is considering relocating to somewhere less pretentious. In an attempt to drown out the perpetual construction, Northern Ballard preserves its sanity writing songs about love, happiness, and infrastructure. His English accent and penchant for ripping off the classic 60’s songbook mark him up as one of the leading plagiarists of our time.
