Litter League volunteer community cleanups
May 27 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

I hope you will join us this summer in keeping our local West Seattle Morgan Junction clean. To make it easy for everyone to help out, we have scheduled in advance for five clean up mornings to pick up litter!

The dates are all on Sunday mornings from 9:30 – 11:00:

May 27
July 8
August 5
Sept 2
Oct 7

Yes, May 27 and Sept. 2 fall during holiday weekends, but we know that many people will be in town and able to come!

We will meet by the ATM near the Shell station and I will have vests, litter picker-uppers, buckets and bags for everyone. Please bring and wear your gardening gloves!

I will do a brief safety talk at 9:30 – mainly showing the kids what a needle looks like and to alert me if they find one, don’t pick it up.

This is a wonderful opportunity for family volunteering, meaningful for small kids and something they can really help with! So bring your whole family. Or come alone or with a friend. Dogs are welcome if well-behaved and on-leash and you can do the outer parts of MJ to get you and your pup some exercise. The families with young kids focus on the main intersection areas.

This summer, I am arranging with Seattle Light to let me keep the equipment all summer, so it is also available if you want to tackle an area in your immediate neighborhood around MJ (or if anyone wants to clean up along 35th from the Library to Trenton, that area really needs some help). Just let me know!

You can just drop in or you can RSVP, which is helpful to me in terms of how many people to expect and to ensure I have enough support equipment.

Rainy days don’t cancel unless it’s a downpour.

EC Hughes playground build
Jun 2 @ 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Roxhill Elementary invites you (yes, you!) to help us build our new playground at our new school — the renovated E.C. Hughes Elementary — on Saturday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We need a total of 60 people to get the project done. Currently, we have 30.

Sign up here: http://signup.com/go/HswhdyT.

Two shifts are available and no experience is necessary. We’ll have tools, refreshments and trained supervisors from PlayCreation to help us put together and install equipment. Lunch will also be provided.

We are working on making child care available on site. Children under age 17 may not be within the build-site. Students/children between 14 and 17 eligible for Service Learning Hours may assist with projects outside of the build-site under direct supervision of an adult.

We need two shifts of 30 people each.

Shift one: 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Shift two: 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All community members are welcome.

We’ll also share more information soon on another community work day to move engineered wood chips in place. The new playground for Roxhill students at E.C. Hughes will be open to the public in the fall. This project has been made possible by a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund grant.

Questions? Contact Friends of Roxhill Elementary at friendsofroxhill@gmail.com.

Meet at 9:00 am at the north parking lot kiosk (Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Rose St). Dress for weather, long sleeves/pants year around and sturdy shoes or boots. Sanislo Elementary dinner/auction @ Masonic Center
Jun 2 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

You are invited! Come All Around the World with us!

Thanks to the community support of Sanislo Elementary’s auction last year, we kicked our $5,000 goal to the curb and raised $15,000!

This windfall provided a mindfulness program, increased teacher stipends, created a ‘book fair bucks’ program and is affording scholarships to kids in need so they can participate in after-school enrichment! YOU, yes YOU, helped make this happen!

Let’s do it again!

Our annual auction is just around the corner and we hope you can join us once again in supporting educational equity.

Details:

– All Around the World Auction

– Saturday, June 2nd from 6 pm-10 pm

– Alki Masonic Center, 4736 40th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98116

– Silent Auction

– Dinner and TWO Drink Tickets Included!

– A special performance by Seattle Kokon Taiko Japanese Drummers, a DJ, Dancing and more!

You can reserve your tickets online, or, if you can’t make it but would like to donate, you can do that through the link below as well.

Donations to our auction make a significant impact in the education of our kids. With over 70% of our families living in poverty, our school community simply cannot raise these essential funds alone. We hope to see you there!

Mahonia Evaluation Project Work Party @ South Seattle College
Jun 16 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

The Pacific Northwest Mahonia Evaluation Project is hosting its next work party on Saturday, June 16, 10 am to 12 noon. To participate, meet at the Mahonia Research Plot, located at the south end of the South Seattle College campus.

This is a unique opportunity to participate in ‘citizen science,’ observe the growth of over 90 kinds of Mahonia, and work with some of the region’s top horticulturists. While most people know Mahonia as “Oregon Grape,” the genus includes about 100 species native to eastern Asia and western North America. We are evaluating species and cultivars that show tremendous landscape potential, many which are currently not available in PNW nurseries. This research is sponsored by South Seattle College and funded by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

For 2018, we will hold volunteer work parties on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month, from 10 am-noon. Activities vary with the season, but typically include weeding, mulching, and related plant stewardship. Snacks and refreshments are provided, and each session includes a tour of the research plot.

For more information about the Pacific Northwest Mahonia Evaluation Project, click here or send your questions to mahoniaseattle@gmail.com. To find our location and driving directions, click here. And when you’re ready, please sign up for any of our community work parties. It’s easy to sign up—just click here.

Our next work party is on Saturday, June 16, from 10 am to noon.

Looking forward to seeing you among the Mahonia.

Cheers!

Formerly the Spring Clean, The Refresh is now a two-day neighborhood cleaning and restoration event on Friday, June 22nd, and Saturday, June 23rd. The CDA has decided to extend this community event to two days for more intensive projects such as the White Center Food Bank’s remodel to a grocery store layout, and partnering with Habitat for Humanity to do landscaping work. We will be capping at 100 participants for this event. This is a great opportunity for lovers of the White Center Community to come together and refresh out neighborhood! Litter League volunteer community cleanups
Jul 8 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Aug 12 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Green Seattle Partnership West Seattle Volunteer Event
Location: Westcrest Park – Pull Ivy, Pet Puppies

August 12, 2018 10 am – 12 pm

Activities:

Help make room to plant 100+ trees this fall by weeding out Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy at Westcrest Park. You’ll have fun digging up roots, yanking up vines, and when it’s all done, seeing the progress just a few fine folks can make in a few, short hours. As an extra bonus, you’ll get to see the cute dogs that visit the off-leash area adjacent to where we’ll be working. Maybe if you ask nicely, the owner will let you pet them? Dress to protect yourself from the sun, and from Himalayan Blackberry prickles.

Can’t join us this time? Please mark your calendar for the second Sunday in September, 10-noon.

Open to the public. All ages OK

What to Bring:

We will have a light snack, a jug to fill up your water bottle, gloves, and plenty of tools. Closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt are recommended. If you have leather-lined gardening or work gloves, bring ’em!

Where to Meet:

We will meet at the NE entrance of Westcrest Park, at the intersection of 5th Ave SW and SW Cloverdale Street in Southwest Seattle. This is also known as the “Westcrest dogpark back gate” on Google. (Please note: the site map on this page gives a less precise location of where to meet.)

Where to Park:
We are meeting at the parking area for the dog park, and additional parking is found on Cloverdale.

Fly-tying with Brita Fordice at Emerald Water Anglers
Aug 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.

These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.

She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.

Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.

EWA Fly Shop
August 23rd, 7 pm

Brita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. We’ll have some special materials ordered for the event and all fly tying materials will be 10% off for ticket holders.

Revitalize Westcrest Park with DIRT Corps
Aug 25 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Westcrest Park Forest Restoration Work Party – 8th Ave

Join DIRT Corps in revitalizing Westcrest Park. We are working on the parcel of land next to 8th Ave, and it is overgrown with Himalayan blackberries! It’s up to us and our volunteers to bring it under control!

The beginning of this volunteer event will include a brief weed ID. Combine knowledge with action as we work to clear this beautiful space of harmful species that overtakes the area. Many of you might already have this experience in your own backyard!

Let’s work together to gradually transform and maintain Westcrest Park and make it a great public space for everyone to enjoy. Let us know of any questions, hope to see you out there!

WEAR: Wear closed-toed shoes, long sleeves, long pants, and hat. Dress for the weather.
BRING: Bring water and also lunch if you think you are going to get hungry. DIRT Corps will provide coffee and light refreshments.
MEET: Meet next to the p-patch gardens.
PARK: Park in the south parking lot of Westcrest Park, entrance is off SW Henderson St.

Litter League volunteer community cleanups
Sep 2 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Sep 9 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Westcrest Park – Finish it!

Date & Time:
September 9, 2018 10 am – 12 pm

Activities:

We have been working hard for THREE months to remove a giant patch of Himalayan Blackberry next to the dog park parking lot–and this September 9th, we FINISH IT! To celebrate, we’ll be opening up a jar of homemade blackberry jam and toasting with bubbly apple juice (nonalcoholic).

Why are you digging out a blackberry patch, you may ask? Why, tomake room to plant 100+ trees this fall, including the iconic Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock.

Can’t join us this time? Please mark your calendar for the second Sunday in October, 10-noon and plan on pulling English Ivy.

What to Bring:

Dress to protect yourself from the sun, and from Himalayan Blackberry prickles. Closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt are recommended. If you have leather-lined gardening or work gloves, bring ’em!

We will have a light snack, a jug to fill up your water bottle, gloves, and plenty of tools.

Cooking with Class @ Salty's on Alki
Sep 13 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

From Salty’s on Alki:

Annual Cooking with Class 2018 at Salty’s on Alki
Cook with Your Favorite Seattle Chefs, Sept. 13 2018

This interactive, fun, play-with-your-food event hooks you and amazing chefs up to make dishes you will love to recreate at home. Wineries donate wines that pair with the dishes and you get to savor it all together. Nosh on Salty’s appetizers and bites from B & E Meats and Seafood, and sip refreshing beverages before doing the hard work. Come join in the fun in support of the Pike Place Market Foundation.

People love getting to know Seattle area chefs and cooking with them, and chefs love meeting their guests instead of being behind the scenes as they are at most fundraisers. It’s a win-win for everyone, especially our beneficiary. We embark in a new direction specifically targeting programs that assist seniors at the Pike Place Market Foundation. Seniors can get overlooked in the world of fundraising; we like to focus on helping make their lives a little more secure and comfortable.

Join us at this fun event on September 15, 2016, at Salty’s on Alki in West Seattle. Tickets sell out every year, so be sure to check out seattledining.com/cwc for the list of chefs and the food items they will teach you about and availability. Each chef donates their time, experience and product.

Be sure to also look for the Wine Tasting Table with a taste of the wines served during class. If you’ve never experienced Cooking with Class, make this the year you sign up — go online to seattledining.com/cwc. It’s a fun evening that helps a lot of people and takes place in one of the nicest spots in town with the best view of Seattle. There’s just nothing bad about it.

Litter League volunteer community cleanups
Oct 7 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

When: 2nd Saturday of the Month (Oct 13, Nov 10, Dec 8)
Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Address is 2452 SW Thistle St.

A beautiful area called the Thistle Street Green Space along the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail needs your help to battle invasive species. Next to a local pea patch garden, Chief Sealth International High School, and Longfellow Creek, this piece of green space requires regular maintenance to keep it clear of invasive plants like Himalayan Blackberry, Buttercup, Herb Robert, and many more. Come volunteer with DIRT Corps and learn how to ID both native plants and invasive plants, as well as how to remove all kinds of invasive species so native plants can thrive. Afterwards you can walk the trails and explore this hidden gem in Delridge.

‘Like’ screening at Seattle Lutheran High School
Oct 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

First showing in the area of the screening LIKE.

A one-hour documentary about the impact of social media on our lives.

Seattle Lutheran High School invites you to a free screening of LIKE. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.

IndieFlix goal for this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other. (Go here) to view the official trailer of the documentary.

Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement
