Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement

West Seattle’s second annual Track Friday @ Hiawatha Playfield
Nov 23 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

P3 Running and West Seattle Runner are excited to bring Track Friday back to West Seattle! Track Friday is a community-based movement to mobilize people to support charitable giving. Participants run laps on a nearby track to raise awareness and funds for causes that they care about. Track Friday is held the day after Thanksgiving to encourage people to reunite with old and new friends, burn off some Thanksgiving Day calories, and put a little love and giving spirit back into a day that has become synonymous with commercialism.

Michele Pettinger, the founder of P3 Running, is raising money for the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation as her mom is living with the disease. Her friend, Fes Naqvi who learned of Track Friday last year, became involved and is raising money for The Butterfly Fund, a non-profit that helps families who have children (0-18) who have a catastrophic life altering medical condition or event.

We understand that you may have a charity that you feel strongly about, so you are able to fundraise for your chosen charity on Track Friday as well! You can do so by simply joining the West Seattle Track Friday 2018 Team.

We will be at Hiawatha Track and Playfield the morning after Thanksgiving from 9 to 11. Invite your friends and family to join – walk 1 mile, 10 minutes, 10 miles, 2 hours, whatever you feel driven to do! Check in with our table to log your miles! We will have hot chocolate, coffee, and some treats, too.

For anyone who participates in the event, 10% of your purchases at West Seattle Runner that day will be donated to the funds. Simply pick up a token from our table at the park to present at the store when purchasing.

On a dark and stormy night, six unique guests, plus a butler and a maid, assemble for a dinner party at the home of Mr. Boddy. When their host turns up dead, it is clear that no one is safe! Soon the guests are racing to find the killer and keep the body count from stacking up. Based on the popular board game and adapted from the cult classic film, Clue is the comedy whodunit that will keep you guessing (and laughing) to the very end.

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA meeting
Jan 22 @ 6:30 pm

From the Fairmount Park Elementary PTA website:

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings

We need help from all of our parents and teachers to continue raising funds to support school initiatives. By becoming a member of PTA and attending meetings, parents can also stay informed of the events and decisions taking place at our school. We strongly encourage everyone to renew or start a new membership for only $15 per person.

To join, simply attend our next PTA meeting or register online (http://www.fpepta.org). This gives you a vote (voice) on how your fundraising dollars are spent towards our amazing programs: music & art, enhanced assemblies, the Backpack program, student wellness, parent education events, and much more.

General Membership Meetings for the 2018/19 school year will take place at the school cafeteria, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

All are welcome to attend. Child-care services will likely be available for these meetings. Contact board@fpepta.org with questions.

The Opposite of Worry–Playful Parenting in Anxious Times @ Jerry M. Brockey Center at South Seattle College
Feb 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

SSC Cooperative Preschools presents: The Opposite of Worry–Playful Parenting in Anxious Times.

Whether it’s the fear provoked by the monster in the closet or the dread that arises from new social situations, school, or sports, anxiety can be especially challenging and traumatizing for children. And since anxiety has a mind of its own, logic and reassurance often fail, leaving parents increasingly frustrated about how to help.

Dr. Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., is the author of Playful Parenting and The Opposite of Worry. He will discuss simple, effective strategies that build connection and dampen anxiety through fun, play, and empathy.

Celebrating 65 years of providing quality education in this community! Established in 1952, Little Pilgrim Preschool is nestled at the base of Fauntleroy Park in West Seattle. Children enjoy a rich, play-based curriculum that not only prepares them for kindergarten, but also instills in them a lifelong love of learning. Whether finger painting, building with blocks, running on the playground or on a field trip to the neighborhood grocery, every experience is seen as a learning opportunity.

Bring the whole family to play, tour the beautiful school spaces, meet the teachers, ask questions and pick up enrollment information for fall classes. For more information, please contact the Little Pilgrim School Director at 206-932-5600, Lorrie@fauntleroyucc.org.

Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases Class
Mar 11 @ 6:00 pm – 8:15 pm

Join us to learn about eliminating Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases. These conditions may be happening due to nutritional deficiencies, stress and lifestyle things (like breathing rubbing alcohol all the time), toxins, viruses, and inflammatory foods (such as gluten and nightshades), etc. Health conditions can ramp up your feelings of stress, and treatments that take into account all of the factors that affect you give you greater relief.

Miranda is here is help you with all of this. She strives to help you heal without drugs or surgeries. Her focus is on identifying the sources of your discomfort or illness and designing the most effective treatment strategy.

Both acupuncture and Nutrition Response Testing recognize that the human body is a naturally self-healing organism. Often the combination of nutritional support and acupuncture treatments give the body what is required for healing.

Arrive at 6:30pm for food and conversation. Class starts punctually at 7:00pm.

It’s a wonderful way to learn about this fusion fitness practice that blends dance, martial arts, and healing movement. All fitness levels, ages, body types, and abilities are welcome.

Our entrance is on 37th Ave. SW. Just look for the sandwich board on the corner and the door with our logo on it.

We Are Still Here: 10th Anniversary Film Screening @ Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center
Apr 13 @ 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm

We hope you will join us for film, food, and conversation as we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Duwamish Longhouse with a FREE screening + postfilm discussion of PRINCESS ANGELINE and two short films on Saturday, April 13th. (Full film synopses below). These films tell indigenous stories: past and future.

This event is a collaborative community dialogue produced by the Social Justice Film Festival & Institute in collaboration with the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center.

The Duwamish people have been in the Seattle/Greater King County area since time immemorial. Their stories, such as “North Wind, South Wind,” tell of the last Ice Age, and an Ice Weir breaking over the Duwamish River. Their longhouse today stands across the street from where one of their largest villages was located before it was burned down by settlers in 1895. Today, the longhouse is a space where the Duwamish people can revitalize their culture, preserve living heritage, and share their stories with the community.

We hope you will join us as we celebrate the anniversary of the creation of this space with an evening of fantastic films.

FILMS:

PRINCESS ANGELINE

Princess Angeline, daughter of Chief Seattle, is seen on many postcards and toward the end of her life, she lived alone, refusing to leave her homeland. What historical events led to her being one of the few Duwamish people left in Seattle by the 1890′s, only 35 years after the peace treaty? This video explores the story of the Duwamish and their unrecognized tribal status primarily through the life of Princess Angeline.

Apr 22 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
