Fly-tying with Brita Fordice at Emerald Water Anglers
Aug 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.

These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.

She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.

Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.

EWA Fly Shop
August 23rd, 7 pm

Brita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. We’ll have some special materials ordered for the event and all fly tying materials will be 10% off for ticket holders.

‘Be There’ Rally 2018 @ West Seattle Elementary School
Sep 5 @ 7:00 am – 8:00 am

UPDATE: In case of a delayed start of school for Seattle Public Schools, this event will be postponed to correspond with the first official day of school. At this time, the first official day of school is September 5th, 2018. We will continue to update with any changes.

The community is invited to attend the third annual Be There Rally at West Seattle Elementary on Wednesday, September 5th, from 7:00am to 8:00am. The school, in partnership with Seattle Housing Authority, High Point, is rolling out the red carpet and asking community leaders, school supporters, family and friends to line up to cheer, clap and high-five students as they enter into the new school year.

School leaders are calling for 100 men and women to line the red carpet, dressed for success and ready to lead by example and cheer on High Point youth. Research shows that children whose family and community take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.

Your presence at the school on the first day will support efforts to build valuable partnerships with families and members of the community to support student learning and positive academic outcomes.

To confirm your attendance or for more information, please contact Kyle Tunstall, Head Teacher, West Seattle Elementary at (206) 252-9450 or via email at kwtunstall@seattleschools.org.

West Seattle Elementary is located in the High Point Neighborhood at 6760 34th Ave SW, Seattle.

Cooking with Class @ Salty's on Alki
Sep 13 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

From Salty’s on Alki:

Annual Cooking with Class 2018 at Salty’s on Alki
Cook with Your Favorite Seattle Chefs, Sept. 13 2018

This interactive, fun, play-with-your-food event hooks you and amazing chefs up to make dishes you will love to recreate at home. Wineries donate wines that pair with the dishes and you get to savor it all together. Nosh on Salty’s appetizers and bites from B & E Meats and Seafood, and sip refreshing beverages before doing the hard work. Come join in the fun in support of the Pike Place Market Foundation.

People love getting to know Seattle area chefs and cooking with them, and chefs love meeting their guests instead of being behind the scenes as they are at most fundraisers. It’s a win-win for everyone, especially our beneficiary. We embark in a new direction specifically targeting programs that assist seniors at the Pike Place Market Foundation. Seniors can get overlooked in the world of fundraising; we like to focus on helping make their lives a little more secure and comfortable.

Join us at this fun event on September 15, 2016, at Salty’s on Alki in West Seattle. Tickets sell out every year, so be sure to check out seattledining.com/cwc for the list of chefs and the food items they will teach you about and availability. Each chef donates their time, experience and product.

Be sure to also look for the Wine Tasting Table with a taste of the wines served during class. If you’ve never experienced Cooking with Class, make this the year you sign up — go online to seattledining.com/cwc. It’s a fun evening that helps a lot of people and takes place in one of the nicest spots in town with the best view of Seattle. There’s just nothing bad about it.

Join us to help keep Morgan clean and beautiful in a short litter pick up party. Dogs are welcome if well-behaved and on-leash and you can do the outer parts of MJ to get you and your pup some exercise. The families with young kids focus on the main intersection areas.

We will meet by the ATM near the Shell station and I will have vests, litter picker-uppers, buckets and bags for everyone. Please bring and wear your gardening gloves! Includes a brief safety talk at 9:30.

‘Like’ screening at Seattle Lutheran High School
Oct 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

First showing in the area of the screening LIKE.

A one-hour documentary about the impact of social media on our lives.

Seattle Lutheran High School invites you to a free screening of LIKE. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.

IndieFlix goal for this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other. (Go here) to view the official trailer of the documentary.

Lauren Davidson Benefit Show For Wounded Warriors @ The Skylark
Nov 10 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Live music at Skylark Café & Club featuring Lauren Davidson in a Benefit Show For Wounded Warriors (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/).

CMA (country music association) artist Lauren Davidson is a New York City/New Jersey based singer-songwriter. Since the age of 10, she has been performing professionally by putting her unique and powerful voice on display. One of Lauren’s greatest joys is being on stage and collaborating with other musicians. Lauren comes from a musical family, singing and performing with her father since childhood and later writing songs together. She continues to co-write with him today in addition to other writers on the music scene.

Lauren is inspired daily by artists of many different genres of music including Contemporary Country, Rock, and Pop. She has become a popular and loved name on the Regional Country scene where she has carved out a niche as an established singer-songwriter.

In 2015, Lauren released her first two singles, “Sometimes,” and “Loaded Gun.” The critically-acclaimed tracks were featured on her debut EP, Hear Me. You can find Lauren Davidson’s songs on all major digital music outlets.

The country singer gives fans everything she’s got when playing numerous venues around the tri-state area. Lauren has opened shows for some of todays biggest country stars including Old Dominion, Justin Moore, LOCASH, and more.

Lauren’s “Loaded Gun” has been exclusively featured on The Boot and was named Nash FM 94.7 Nash Next Top 10 finalist. Her latest release, “I’ll Drink To That,” was named the Digital Journal’s Top 5 Female Country Radio Singles in 2017.

When you think Lauren Davidson, you’ll hear Alanis Morissette with a splash of Carrie Underwood.

Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s annual Catholic Relief Services Ethical Trade Sale is coming up on Sunday, November 18 from 9:30 am-1:00 pm in the Walmesley Center (7000 35th Ave SW).

We live in an era of unprecedented economic interdependence. Ethical Trade seeks to change the ways in which conventional trade often leaves behind the most vulnerable people. Employers also assure that workers are treated with dignity and that forced labor is not part of the supply chain.

At the sale, you’ll find unique gift items, including chocolates, Advent calendars, nativities, crosses, holiday and home décor, scarves, ornaments, baskets, and much more. In addition to Ethical Trade items, you’ll find: holiday cards from Noel House (a Catholic Community Services shelter for homeless women), tasty treats sold by the Pre-K and 3rd grade classes to benefit WestSide Baby, Tanzanian rosaries and batiks items from Maryknoll, Catholic lip and beard balms benefiting youth ministry, Purpose Jewelry made by women who escaped Human Trafficking, and Olivewood Items from the Holy Land. Meet at 9:00 am at the north parking lot kiosk (Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Rose St). Dress for weather, long sleeves/pants year around and sturdy shoes or boots. Native Plant ID and Invasive Plant Removal Along Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail @ Thistle Street Green Space
Dec 1 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

A beautiful area called the Thistle Street Green Space along the
Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail needs your help in a battle against invasive
species. Next to a local pea patch garden, Chief Sealth High School,
and Longfellow Creek, this piece of green space requires regular
maintenance to keep it clear of invaders like Himalayan
Blackberry, Buttercup, Herb Robert, and others. Come volunteer with
DIRT Corps and learn how to identify both native plants and invasive plants
as well as how to remove all kinds of invasive species so native
plants can thrive. Afterwards you can walk the trails and explore this
hidden gem in Delridge.
