“Out of This World!” West Seattle Orchestras’ spectacular spring season finale
Leading the evening, the Intermediate Orchestra under the direction of Mike Jauregui will trip you out of the universe with Holst’s “Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity” and “Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space.”
On a more serious, down-to-earth note the premiere of “Anthem to Courage”, written by West Seattle resident and WSCO musician Robert Duisberg, will be presented in honor of local artist and remarkable survivor, “Brenda.” In the words of the composer, the compelling main theme, the Amabile section, is a sort of “love song without words,a answered by a heroic brass chorus. All is framed by an Andante Solenne, a solemn processional, with chimes marking the march of our time as mortals, ending in the hopeful heroic strain of a vanishing solo horn.”
The West Seattle Wind Symphony portion of the concert, conducted by Anton Coleman, includes the haunting “O Magnum Mysterium,” written by Morten Lauridsen, an internationally revered composer with roots in the Pacific Northwest. The concert will conclude with “Give Us This Day,” composed by the late David Maslanka, a prolific composer for orchestra and wind ensembles. Pianist Dayana Capulong joins the WSCO Wind Symphony for this unusual piece featuring full wind ensemble with piano.

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan’s new solo album, Tenderness, is a reflection on his experiences traveling the globe over two and a half years on GNR’s Not In This Lifetime tour. Encountering heartbreak, anger, fear, confusion and divide on his travels during this tumultuous time in our world history, McKagan channeled a collective hurt into songs of monolithic power. The album was produced by recent Grammy winner Shooter Jennings and features Jennings’ band.

And last but not least, West Seattle Thriftway will be grilling burgers from 11:00 am to approximately 3:00 pm in front of the store as a fundraiser to benefit the festival (suggested donation $7 for burger, chips and a soft drink) as they have so generously done year after year.

We’re delighted to welcome Roy back to Kenyon Hall, in his only Seattle appearance this time around. Hall favorites Orville, Grant, and John haven’t performed together recently, because Grant now lives in Louisiana. As soon as we heard that he was going to be visiting Seattle in July, we asked them to once again grace our stage. Orville’s expansive vocals and expressive Dobro, Grant’s sweet Harmonica, and John’s complementary guitar combine to produce a barrage of beautiful music, performed as only these pros can do it.

Northern Ballard performs at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor). More from C & P:
Since all the hipsters moved in, Northern Ballard is considering relocating to somewhere less pretentious. In an attempt to drown out the perpetual construction, Northern Ballard preserves its sanity writing songs about love, happiness, and infrastructure. His English accent and penchant for ripping off the classic 60’s songbook mark him up as one of the leading plagiarists of our time.

This will be Tyrone’s first official performance at Kenyon Hall. He’s a longtime friend of Pat Wright and mine, and served as host whenever the Total Experience Gospel Choir toured Japan. Every time he visits Seattle, we get together, often at the hall, and tell stories, sing songs, and reminisce about our many years as friends and musical colleagues. Recently Tyrone asked if he could perform publicly at Kenyon Hall with his elegant pianist, Miho Usuda, Seattle drummer extraordinaire Jeff Busch (who also toured Japan with us), and the gospel legend herself, Patrinell Wright. I readily agreed, and am looking forward to presenting his ensemble to our Kenyon Hall audience, and to accompanying Pat in one of our favorite songs. This concert is also a commemoration of commencement of Tyrone’s digital distribution and release of his new song, Mandela. Tyrone is a unique performer. He’s a composer, singer, and guitarist, and his concerts are filled with energy, positivity, and joy. No wonder Pat loves him!

The community is invited to attend the fourth annual Be There Rally at West Seattle Elementary on Wednesday, September 5th, from 7:00 am to 8:00 am. The school, in partnership with Seattle Housing Authority, High Point, is rolling out the red carpet and asking community leaders, school supporters, family and friends to line up to cheer, clap, and high-five students as they enter into the new school year.
School leaders are calling for 100 men and women to line the red carpet, dressed for success and ready to lead by example and cheer on High Point youth. Research shows that children whose family and community take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.
Your presence at the school on the first day will support efforts to build valuable partnerships with families and members of the community to support student learning and positive academic outcomes.
