Revitalize Westcrest Park with DIRT Corps
Jun 30 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Westcrest Park Forest Restoration Work Party – 8th Ave

Join DIRT Corps in revitalizing Westcrest Park. We are working on the parcel of land next to 8th Ave, and it is overgrown with Himalayan blackberries! It’s up to us and our volunteers to bring it under control!

The beginning of this volunteer event will include a brief weed ID. Combine knowledge with action as we work to clear this beautiful space of harmful species that overtakes the area. Many of you might already have this experience in your own backyard!

Let’s work together to gradually transform and maintain Westcrest Park and make it a great public space for everyone to enjoy. Let us know of any questions, hope to see you out there!

WEAR: Wear closed-toed shoes, long sleeves, long pants, and hat. Dress for the weather.
BRING: Bring water and also lunch if you think you are going to get hungry. DIRT Corps will provide coffee and light refreshments.
MEET: Meet next to the p-patch gardens.
PARK: Park in the south parking lot of Westcrest Park, entrance is off SW Henderson St.

Litter League volunteer community cleanups
Jul 8 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

I hope you will join us this summer in keeping our local West Seattle Morgan Junction clean. To make it easy for everyone to help out, we have scheduled in advance for five clean up mornings to pick up litter!

The dates are all on Sunday mornings from 9:30 – 11:00:

May 27
July 8
August 5
Sept 2
Oct 7

Yes, May 27 and Sept. 2 fall during holiday weekends, but we know that many people will be in town and able to come!

We will meet by the ATM near the Shell station and I will have vests, litter picker-uppers, buckets and bags for everyone. Please bring and wear your gardening gloves!

I will do a brief safety talk at 9:30 – mainly showing the kids what a needle looks like and to alert me if they find one, don’t pick it up.

This is a wonderful opportunity for family volunteering, meaningful for small kids and something they can really help with! So bring your whole family. Or come alone or with a friend. Dogs are welcome if well-behaved and on-leash and you can do the outer parts of MJ to get you and your pup some exercise. The families with young kids focus on the main intersection areas.

This summer, I am arranging with Seattle Light to let me keep the equipment all summer, so it is also available if you want to tackle an area in your immediate neighborhood around MJ (or if anyone wants to clean up along 35th from the Library to Trenton, that area really needs some help). Just let me know!

You can just drop in or you can RSVP, which is helpful to me in terms of how many people to expect and to ensure I have enough support equipment.

Rainy days don’t cancel unless it’s a downpour.

Green Seattle Partnership West Seattle Volunteer Event
Location: Westcrest Park – Pull Ivy, Pet Puppies

August 12, 2018 10 am – 12 pm

Activities:

Help make room to plant 100+ trees this fall by weeding out Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy at Westcrest Park. You’ll have fun digging up roots, yanking up vines, and when it’s all done, seeing the progress just a few fine folks can make in a few, short hours. As an extra bonus, you’ll get to see the cute dogs that visit the off-leash area adjacent to where we’ll be working. Maybe if you ask nicely, the owner will let you pet them? Dress to protect yourself from the sun, and from Himalayan Blackberry prickles.

Can’t join us this time? Please mark your calendar for the second Sunday in September, 10-noon.

Open to the public. All ages OK

What to Bring:

We will have a light snack, a jug to fill up your water bottle, gloves, and plenty of tools. Closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt are recommended. If you have leather-lined gardening or work gloves, bring ’em!

Where to Meet:

We will meet at the NE entrance of Westcrest Park, at the intersection of 5th Ave SW and SW Cloverdale Street in Southwest Seattle. This is also known as the “Westcrest dogpark back gate” on Google. (Please note: the site map on this page gives a less precise location of where to meet.)

Where to Park:
We are meeting at the parking area for the dog park, and additional parking is found on Cloverdale.

Fly-tying with Brita Fordice at Emerald Water Anglers
Aug 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.

These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.

She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.

Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.

EWA Fly Shop
August 23rd, 7 pm

Brita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. We’ll have some special materials ordered for the event and all fly tying materials will be 10% off for ticket holders.

Litter League volunteer community cleanups
Sep 2 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

RainWise open house @ Young's Restaurant
Oct 4 @ 4:30 pm

A major milestone in ongoing efforts to control stormwater – one of the largest sources of pollution in Puget Sound – has been reached at a popular restaurant where three new cisterns have been installed that will keep more than 11,000 gallons of stormwater out of the combined sewer system each year.

In this latest in a series of community projects, the RainWise Program has partnered with the iconic Young’s Restaurant to install three cisterns, each storing 530 gallons of stormwater from the restaurant’s roof.

The cisterns capture runoff from 2,838 square feet of roof area and store it for use – effectively keeping 11,145 gallons of stormwater out of the wastewater treatment system.

The local environmental nonprofit ECOSS helped Young’s owners navigate the process to access RainWise, as it has with numerous diverse businesses throughout King County.

Learn more about cisterns and King County’s RainWise Program at an open house on Thursday, Oct. 4 at Young’s Restaurant, 9413 16th Ave. SW, starting at 4:30 p.m. There will be refreshments and information on how to take advantage of RainWise rebates. The RainWise staff will share information about the program’s goals and benefits, and how to participate. Anthony (AT & P), the contractor who installed the restaurant’s cisterns, will offer insight on this installation and use of the stored water.

Anthony (AT & P) is one of ECOSS’s 16 multicultural contractors recruited through this efforts. For over a year, ECOSS’s Chinese- and Vietnamese- speaking staff assisted and supported Young’s owners and contractor through the RainWise process.

“I have neighbors and relatives who pass by and ask me, ‘What’s this?’ I tell them it’s a tank that collects rainwater that I can use to water my plants,” said Van Young, who along with his wife, Ella, owns Young’s Restaurant. “The RainWise Program helps pay for the cistern and installation – it’s a good program and it benefits our community.”

With the new cistern capacity at Young’s Restaurant, the RainWise Program now has more than 1,500 participants. By channeling stormwater runoff from over 40 acres of impervious rooftops to green infrastructure facilities such as rain gardens or cisterns, these properties are keeping over 20 million gallons of runoff annually out of the combined stormwater-sewer system, and controlling overflows in local water bodies during heavy rains.

The Youngs urge other businesses, faith-based organizations, neighbors, and community organizations in eligible basins to take advantage of this program. Property owners in the Highland Park and South Park neighborhoods and many others are eligible for RainWise rebates that can cover up to 100 percent of the cost to install a cistern or rain garden.

Besides beautifying landscapes, rain gardens help control stormwater – a significant source of pollution in local lakes, rivers and Puget Sound.

RainWise is a joint program of King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities.

Litter League volunteer community cleanups
Oct 7 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings

We need help from all of our parents and teachers to continue raising funds to support school initiatives. Pop-Up Benefit for Local Artist Christine Olson @ Capers
Jan 26 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Aid to an artist … at least that is what we’re hoping for.

Popular and beloved Capers-art walk artist Christine Helen Olson has had a tough holiday season. Many of you may have heard of the early-morning fire in Fremont on Christmas Eve that badly damaged Sfingiday, Christine’s newly-opened gift and art gallery that supports art and fine crafts created by artists from around the U.S.

The cause was arson.

Capers is supporting Christine with a Sfingiday pop-up while she gets back on her feet.

Christine will be with us showing her paintings and work from many of the artists and crafts folks she promotes.

We’d like your help. Please come. Join us for a sip and a bite. Please invite your customers. Bring friends, neighbors, your posse, and peeps. Bring smiling faces, warm hugs, well wishes, and any support you can.

Purchases appreciated.

Donations accepted.

All proceeds directly benefit Christine’s gallery.
