‘Be There’ Rally 2018 @ West Seattle Elementary School
Sep 5 @ 7:00 am – 8:00 am

UPDATE: In case of a delayed start of school for Seattle Public Schools, this event will be postponed to correspond with the first official day of school. At this time, the first official day of school is September 5th, 2018. We will continue to update with any changes.

The community is invited to attend the third annual Be There Rally at West Seattle Elementary on Wednesday, September 5th, from 7:00am to 8:00am. The school, in partnership with Seattle Housing Authority, High Point, is rolling out the red carpet and asking community leaders, school supporters, family and friends to line up to cheer, clap and high-five students as they enter into the new school year.

School leaders are calling for 100 men and women to line the red carpet, dressed for success and ready to lead by example and cheer on High Point youth. Research shows that children whose family and community take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.

Your presence at the school on the first day will support efforts to build valuable partnerships with families and members of the community to support student learning and positive academic outcomes.

To confirm your attendance or for more information, please contact Kyle Tunstall, Head Teacher, West Seattle Elementary at (206) 252-9450 or via email at kwtunstall@seattleschools.org.

West Seattle Elementary is located in the High Point Neighborhood at 6760 34th Ave SW, Seattle.

Seattle Public Schools, SPS, provides Equal Educational Opportunities and Equal Employment Opportunities and does not discriminate in any programs or activities on the basis of sex; race; creed; color; religion; ancestry; national origin; age; economic status; sexual orientation, including gender expression or identity.

6th annual San Gennaro Festival @ Georgetown
Sep 7 @ 6:00 pm – Sep 9 @ 4:00 pm

The San Gennaro Foundation of Seattle is excited to be back in Georgetown for its 6th annual “San Gennaro Festival” to take place September 7-9th. This three-day Italian festival in Georgetown brings together the best in Italian cuisine, a beer and wine garden, activities for kids, merchandise booths and three nights of live music and dancing. This year’s headliner is one of the top Italian American bands in the country, Ray Massa’s EuroRhythms.

The festival will once again hold a blood drive to raise awareness and much needed donations for Bloodworks Northwest. Last year, the festival collected 16 pints of blood and saved 48 lives.

Other highlights include an expanded children/family area with different activities throughout the day, including free face painting and crafts, and a traditional procession Saturday morning starting at 11:00 p.m. This tradition has roots in Italy where a procession is held for every important saint day. Father Mangano will be back this year to bless the festival and officially kick things off! Art Oberto is also going to be there, next to his hydroplane and he’s always a fun addition to the festival.

Sunday night will feature the raffle with three fabulous prizes. The first prize for this year is two tickets from Alaska airlines to anywhere in the continental USA. Second prize is a wine fridge and 25 bottles of wine, and third prize is a Seahawks tailgate package with all the items needed to cheer on our favorite hometown team! Winners do not need to be present to win.

The San Gennaro Foundation is a non-profit organization created in 2013 to honor St. Gennaro, the Patron Saint of Naples, and his commitment to help people in need. The Foundation’s goal is to raise money through events such as the San Gennaro Festival to help support local community efforts.

FESTIVAL HOURS: Friday Sept. 7th, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday Sept. 8th, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., Sunday Sept. 9th, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. This is a family friendly, free event.

Festival location on South Angelo Street and Ellis Ave South. For more information about the festival or about Saint Gennaro, please visit our website at www.sangennarofestivalseattle.org.

‘Like’ screening at Seattle Lutheran High School
Oct 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

First showing in the area of the screening LIKE.

A one-hour documentary about the impact of social media on our lives.

Seattle Lutheran High School invites you to a free screening of LIKE. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.

IndieFlix goal for this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other. (Go here) to view the official trailer of the documentary.

Learn about new 24-credit high-school requirement @ Chief Sealth International High School
Nov 13 @ 7:00 pm

We’d like to invite the West Seattle Community to our Nov. 13th, PTSA General Meeting for a presentation on the state requirement for 24 credits for graduation. Presentation by Heidi Bennett, Wa. State Region 6, Legislative Representative.

NEW 24 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & DECIPHERING HIGH SCHOOL – A guide for middle and high school parents

With the change to WA State 24-credit graduation requirements approaching, I’ve developed a presentation geared toward middle and high school parents to explain:

v New WA State 24-credit graduation requirements

v State and Federal testing High School requirements

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Come and learn more about this new requirement

Pop-Up Benefit for Local Artist Christine Olson @ Capers
Jan 26 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Aid to an artist … at least that is what we’re hoping for.

Popular and beloved Capers-art walk artist Christine Helen Olson has had a tough holiday season. Many of you may have heard of the early-morning fire in Fremont on Christmas Eve that badly damaged Sfingiday, Christine’s newly-opened gift and art gallery that supports art and fine crafts created by artists from around the U.S.

The cause was arson.

Capers is supporting Christine with a Sfingiday pop-up while she gets back on her feet.

Christine will be with us showing her paintings and work from many of the artists and crafts folks she promotes.

We’d like your help. Please come. Join us for a sip and a bite. Please invite your customers. Bring friends, neighbors, your posse, and peeps. Bring smiling faces, warm hugs, well wishes, and any support you can.

Purchases appreciated.

Donations accepted.

All proceeds directly benefit Christine’s gallery.

The Opposite of Worry–Playful Parenting in Anxious Times @ Jerry M. Brockey Center at South Seattle College
Feb 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

SSC Cooperative Preschools presents: The Opposite of Worry–Playful Parenting in Anxious Times.

Whether it’s the fear provoked by the monster in the closet or the dread that arises from new social situations, school, or sports, anxiety can be especially challenging and traumatizing for children. And since anxiety has a mind of its own, logic and reassurance often fail, leaving parents increasingly frustrated about how to help.

Dr. Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., is the author of Playful Parenting and The Opposite of Worry. He will discuss simple, effective strategies that build connection and dampen anxiety through fun, play, and empathy.
