Gatewood Elementary Spring Work Party

The Gatewood Elementary School PTA is hosting a spring outdoor work party and indoor painting party on Saturday, April 25th. Mark your calendar to help with a range of projects to spruce up our beautiful school. We’ll be weeding, planting, and spreading mulch outside. We’ll also do some indoor painting in the vestibule between the cafeteria and playground.

In partnership with a the Seattle Parks Department- the Seattle Police Department is offering a virtual Women’s Personal Safety Class!

Learn proactive tips and steps you can take to enhance your personal safety taught by female Seattle police officers and female employees.

Our class goals:
-Know the important role your instincts and gut reactions play
-Discover potentially dangerous situations and how to avoid them
-Learn how to make a safety plan
-Decrease the odds of becoming a victim

About the class:
-This is a facilitated discussion and lecture about crime prevention and safety.
-This is not a self-defense class.
-This class is open to women of all ages and most appropriate for young women who are at least 14 year of age or older. For that reason, children should not attend.

Colleen Echohawk, candidate for Seattle mayor, announced today that her campaign is launching 40 virtual neighborhood Town Halls across Seattle to hear from voters about their top concerns about Seattle and the future.

“This is a people first campaign. What that means to me, above all, is that it is your voices, your stories, that will transform our shared values into an actionable, powerful vision for our community. This pandemic has created barriers to meeting together, but cannot keep us from connecting. My hope is that this virtual town hall series brings you to the forefront – all of you – essential, frontline professionals, first responders, tech workers, teachers and everyone in between. We have had time to tend to our frustrations, please join with me in a shift toward solutions.” said Echohawk.

Learn dances featured in films from India – the largest moviemaking capital in the world. Bollywood is the Hindi-language sector of the Indian movingmaking industry. Traditional Bollywood dancing has been heavily influenced by Asian culture, Hindu art, music, and culture. Today Bollywood music and dancing is also influenced by other cultures and forms of dance including salsa and hip-hop. Join us for a fun class where we’ll dance to Bollywood hit songs from different eras and learn about the inspiration behind the songs.

ABOUT THE CURATOR:

D.A. Navoti is a member of the Gila River Indian Community and a nonfiction and poetic prose writer. His work has appeared in Homology Lit, Spartan, Indian Country Today, Cloudthroat, and elsewhere. He produces the literary series We the Indigenous and co-created Fight For Our Lives, a reading series supporting communities targeted by divisive politics. He is a 2020 Radical Imagination grant recipient from the NDN Collective and was a 2020 CityArtist from the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. Make Indian Cumin (Jeera) Biscuits and Masala Chai. Jeera biscuits are sweet, salty, crispy, crunchy and crumbly Indian bakery style eggless cookies, flavored with roasted cumin seeds. Masala chai is a traditional Indian beverage made with a mixture of black tea, milk, fresh ginger and spices.
