Intersections Festival @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Mar 24 @ 2:00 pm

Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance will be happening for the second year, this March 21-24, 2019 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in the Delridge neighborhood. Intersections showcases performers in improv, sketch, stand-up, burlesque, storytelling, spoken word, music, theatre, and dance; however, it doesn’t end there.Intersections remains committed to its focus on equity, inclusion, and representation. “Seattle is a diverse city,” says Jekeva Phillips, one member of the all-womxn team, “Why are we only seeing the same faces and hearing the same voices?” Phillips (who is featured in City Arts Magazine’s 2018 Future List) was approached about the project by Natasha Ransom, and Kinzie Shaw of FEELINGS, an Improv duo which aims to amplify intersectional feminism in the face of a white-cis-hetero patriarchy.

The four-day festival will feature a myriad of comedy-related acts from Seattle’s best and brightest POC, Queer, Trans, non-binary, and neurodiverse performers. Each show is a different experience loaded with a variety of acts. No show in the festival will be the same, so the Intersections team strongly encourages patrons to be a part of it all. “We are so excited to be in the audience for this festival,” Say co-founders Natasha Ransom and Kinzie Shaw “The talent is just unbelievably good and we want to soak as much of it in as possible.”

Don’t miss our Giving Party, coming up Saturday March 9th from 2-4pm at Capitol Cider. It’s completely free to attend! For more information about the festival, like Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance on Facebook or visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

For more information about the lineup, visit the website: www.intersectionsfestival.com

Intersections is funded in part by 4Culture, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, Planned Parenthood, and KEXP.

John
By Annie Baker

Time Magazine – 10 Best Shows of 2015
Nominated for 6 Drama Desk Awards
Nominated for 5 Lucille Lortel Awards

At a weekend bed & breakfast, the shadow of infidelity hangs over a young couple struggling to rebuild their relationship – when the elderly owner shares her own memories, ghosts real and imagined arrive to haunt the living. Blending keen realism with the eerily supernatural, this quiet tale from a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright is unafraid to seek beauty in one of the most startling places: the solitude of human experience.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:30 pm
Sundays at 3 pm

“Annie Baker’s John is so good on so many levels that it casts a unique and brilliant light.” – The New Yorker

“Baker does not merely tell a scary story. She shows them, piling up like ghosts of amputated limbs from the war wounded, and makes them riveting, unpredictable, altogether human theater.” – Newsday

Teens, Tech, and Sexuality: Parent Education Night @ West Seattle High School
Mar 27 @ 7:00 pm

West Seattle High School welcomes parents from the community.

Talking to your kid about tech and sexuality is hard! Words like “Media,” “Privacy,” “Safety,” “Porn,” and even “Sex” have different meanings than they did a generation ago.

Come learn from Jo Langford, MA, who has two decades of experience working with t/weens. She will be leading a discussion on how to connect with your child/ren in order to help them make informed decisions about and learn tools to deal with sexuality, growing up with technology, and relationships with confidence and seriousness–all while having fun along the way and doing as little harm to themselves and their peers as possible. This event will be held on March 27 at 7pm in the school Library. Please mark your calendar!

This passionate production was the winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize.

Office Hour
By Julia Cho

Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-winning playwright

Alarmed by his grisly writings, a professor invites a troubled student to her office to shed light on – and build a bridge across – the dark clouds that surround him. As the clock ticks down and tensions rise, she learns that notions of “good” and “bad” are dangerous illusions. A stirring call for empathy and a bold experiment in form, this searing play tackles thorny issues of gun violence, immigration, and “the other” to reveal our essential, human need for connection.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:30 pm
Sundays at 3 pm

“…vital, honest, and valuable. …Office Hour is interested not only in the question of gun violence, but in the painful, isolating struggle faced by the children of immigrant parents in this country.” —NY Magazine

“…[an] urgent and sensitive drama… tense and extremely well thought out… What is so gripping about the play…is the ever-present fear of horrific violence that permeates the space, even as sympathy grows for Dennis. …Cho effectively calls for compassion and outreach from a society that commonly creates violent loners out of troubled children.” —Broadway World

A SNAP Emergency Preparedness workshop is taking place for our 37th & 38th Block Watch neighbors and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. It’s open to any West Seattleites that want to come.

The City of Seattle has created the Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare (SNAP) program to help your neighborhood get organized in case of a major emergency, like an earthquake. We encourage people to not only prepare for themselves and their families but also talk to neighbors about how they will work together to make sure everyone in the neighborhood is safe and cared for.

Meeting Goals
• Meet new neighbors, share contact information, establish a meeting place
• Learn what to do to be better prepared
• Learn how to be safe in an earthquake
• Learn how to use the Help/OK sign
• Know your top three response priorities after a disaster

Please RSVP! Contact Helen at heleno@olgseattle.org

Local talent will perform selections from mom-tastic blogs, books, and articles by Scary Mommy, Moms Who Drink and Swear, Mom News Daily, Blunt Moms, Little Loves and Sunshine, Babysideburns, and many others! And oh yes, the song and dance pieces! How about some Little Big Town and an Alanis Morisette send up? You’ll leave humming along with these!

Bystander Intervention Workshop–Anti-Hate Alaska Junction @ Admiral Congregational Church
May 19 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Anti-Hate Alaska Junction works to reduce hate in our neighborhood by providing Bystander Intervention Workshops.

The leader reviews brain science, including the reality of emotional responses, their effects on brain chemistry, and the resulting triggering of our fight/flight/freeze survival responses. Participants apply new knowledge and practice new skills by running scenarios of hate-based interactions with the goal of de-escalating the situations. Working as an aggressor, a target, or an intervening bystander, participants learn by doing, not by listening.

There will also be an opportunity to have an extra practice session on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 pm.

The workshop is FREE, but donations are accepted. To register, email antihate3@gmail.com or just walk in. Visit our website at www.antihatealaskajunction.wordpress.com

This workshop will be the third of four scheduled to take place in 2019.

First off – please note that we’re shaking things up a bit this year! With accessibility issues of many of our honored guests, and a very small cast of volunteers managing this event, we’ve opted for a MUCH simpler approach than in years past. Instead of breaking out into classrooms, we are designating tables for each range of years in or around the Commons, and for some in the Library. Think very large open house vibe. As laid out in the program map, tables will be organized chronologically by year range, so most of you will be next to the table of classes in the range above or behind you. No more climbing stairs, hunting for elusive rooms, traversing a daunting length of hallways, and dashing between classrooms to find and greet friends and family from other years.

We thank you in advance for supporting this change! As always, we welcome suggestions for improvement (highly recommended to be accompanied by offers for help ;) ), in our effort to maximize community and rapport while minimizing effort for planners and guests alike.

Sanislo Elementary auction @ SSC Brockey Center
Jun 1 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

This year the auction is going to be at The Brockey Center at South Seattle College on June 1st, 2019 at 6p. Admission to the auction is $40 per person and we hope you consider joining us.

Sanislo Elementary School is building a network of dedicated individuals from throughout our community whose support and passion helps increase the chances of success for our children. Last year at Sanislo while we had a goal of raising just $20,000, we ended up exceeding this goal by 50%. We raised $30,000 thanks to all of your donations to Sanislo! The school used this money to support: mindfulness/social emotional learning, a learning garden, and scholarships for after school enrichment programs.

This year our need is even greater. I interviewed key stakeholders including the Principal in order to determine what aspect of the school was in greatest need of support. One of the largest challenges the school is facing is the increasing age of the books and other instruction materials. Our children are struggling to experience the joy of learning and self discovery partially because the average age of their books is more than 10 years old! Our library has become out of touch with reality and the children are not as motivated to participate in self guided learning as children at other schools. Help us bring the joy of learning to our children.

Our annual auction is coming up soon! We hope you can join us once again in supporting educational equity. Come enjoy an evening of fun with us: dinner, dancing, drinks, silent auction, and dancing

We are still looking for acoustic musical/entertainment performers and LGBTQ agencies whom are willing to donate their talent, time and information on the playground to entertain our families, friends, neighbors, et. al. The Last World Octopus Wrestling Champion

Book, music and lyrics by Justin Huertas
Gregory Award-winning playwright of LIZARD BOY

Senior year (and falling in love) is hard enough, but when the discovery of her mother’s old trophy throws open the locked doors of the past, a young girl must reckon with a world turned upside down – and the arrival of strange new abilities that seem to hint at a destiny beyond her wildest imaginations. Taking rich threads of Puget Sound history and folklore, musical mastermind Justin Huertas weaves a thrilling modern myth of love, family, and transformation.

Tears of Joy Theatre’s ‘Snow Soup’ @ Southwest Library
Aug 2 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

At the Southwest Branch Library: Tears of Joy Theatre’s Snow Soup is a rendition of ‘Stone Soup’, an old French folktale in which hungry strangers convince the wary people of a town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a meal that everyone enjoys. This story inspires the qualities of sharing, coming together as a community, and the value of looking beyond stereotypes. Tears of Joy Theatre has been performing cultural and educational stories nationwide for children and families for 47 years and believes in the beauty, power and vitality of puppetry as a unique theatrical experience for audiences of all ages. For ages 4-8.

This program is part of this year’s Summer of Learning program Explore Your World!, which encourages reading and activities around science, technology, technology, arts and math. We are offering over 250 free youth programs throughout the city this summer. You can pick up a Summer Action Guide at any Library location beginning June 24th.

Twelfth Night Productions presents ‘9 to 5 The Musical’ @ West Seattle HS Auditorium
Aug 9 @ 7:30 pm

What do you get when you combine friendship, revenge, Dolly Parton, and perfectly feathered 1970s hair? A musical that will keep you smiling and toe-tapping from start to finish. This summer Twelfth Night Productions is proud to present 9 to 5 The Musical, based on 1980 hit movie, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick. The show will run from August 9 – 18, 2019 at West Seattle High School.

9 to 5 features a powerful trio of women, backed up by an incredible ensemble. Violet, Judy, and Doralee are fed up with the sexist, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. Pushed to the boiling point, they concoct a plan to give him the boot. When these unlikely friends take control of the office, they learn there’s nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world. This high-energy show is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic.

Co-director Taylor Davis noted that she is “excited to be involved in telling a story that is incredibly relatable to women, especially in this time of awakening and empowerment. The musical 9 to 5, although light hearted and full of humor, shows that women can achieve their greatest potential by believing in their abilities and self worth.”

Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets or contact the Box Office: (206) 937-1394.

These productions feature multi-generational casts and foster an environment where mentorship and collaboration go hand in hand.
