Spring Equinox sunset watch @ Solstice Park
Mar 20 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Join West Seattle’s own Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen on Wednesday, March 20th, to watch the Spring Equinox sunset at Solstice Park across from Lincoln Park. The sunset itself will be around 7:10 pm. All ages welcome! From Alice:

March 20 Spring Equinox Sunset Watch — 2019
March 18th, 2019
It’s time for the 40th seasonal sunset watch!

40!!!
When: Wednesday, March 20, 7:00 pm (so come at 6:30 pm)
Actual sunset is supposed to be at 7:22pm, but we have noticed that the Sun sets about 15 minutes earlier than the USNO says, because of the horizon altitude.
The equinox moment is Wednesday, March 20, 2:58pm
Where: Solstice Park – all the way up the hill from the tennis courts (or, if you’re not in Seattle, wherever you have a view of the western horizon!)
Who: Everyone welcome, as usual. (Please do leash your dogs as we usually have a good number of people, kids, and other dogs around.)

Come watch the sunset at Solstice Park in West Seattle. I’ll be there even if it is cloudy because sometimes the Sun peeks through just as it begins to set, but if it is driving rain or a thunderstorm I’m staying home with some tea!

Cottage Grove Neighborhood Meeting @ Delridge Library Community Room
Apr 4 @ 5:00 pm – 5:45 pm

Join us for a discussion about the Seattle Office of Housing (OH) oversight responsibilities pertaining to DESC Cottage Grove Commons and updates on outstanding community issues.

For the last several years, the Cottage Grove neighborhood has seen a steady decline in public safety with much of it centered on the 5400 block of Delridge Way. To be blunt, DESC Cottage Grove Commons continues to contribute to neighborhood issues, and this is disappointing.  The community needs to know what OH is doing to oversee Cottage Grove Commons and what is actively being done to address community concerns.

Dan Foley has accepted an invitation to attend on behalf of OH.

We will meet in the first big parking lot and gather there for announcements and to give routes etc. Please be prepared to carry your own keys as we will not have our key basket on site. May 15 @ 6:15 pm

Meet at West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) Wednesdays 6:15 pm for a free group run:

All our group runs meet at West Seattle Runner, are free, and there is no need to pre-register.

Update for this week!

Come for our regularly scheduled group run and sign up for the Loop the Lupe 5k. We will have race organizer, Brian Callanan, on-site to discuss the race and register folks! For those who register in-store that evening, you will enjoy a 10% discount at West Seattle Runner. After the run, all runners and walkers are welcome to join up and head to the Beer Junction for refreshing beverages -both alcoholic and non-alcoholic- (Might I share, they have a very rich root beer!) and social time. It is always nice to get a chance to chat with one another and our pub social outing is long overdue! Seems like a perfect excuse to get together. Of note: the Beer Junction supports both the Loop the Lupe and the Float Dodger by giving generously to the beer gardens, allowing larger donations to go to the charities. We love our local West Seattle businesses!!

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA meeting
May 20 @ 6:30 pm

From the Fairmount Park Elementary PTA website:

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings

We need help from all of our parents and teachers to continue raising funds to support school initiatives. By becoming a member of PTA and attending meetings, parents can also stay informed of the events and decisions taking place at our school. We strongly encourage everyone to renew or start a new membership for only $15 per person.

To join, simply attend our next PTA meeting or register online (http://www.fpepta.org). This gives you a vote (voice) on how your fundraising dollars are spent towards our amazing programs: music & art, enhanced assemblies, the Backpack program, student wellness, parent education events, and much more.

General Membership Meetings for the 2018/19 school year will take place at the school cafeteria, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

All are welcome to attend. Child-care services will likely be available for these meetings. Contact board@fpepta.org with questions.

Film Synopsis
After surviving life-altering brain injuries, a former NFL Cheerleader and a young boy find healing through a groundbreaking method that takes their recovery above and beyond the medical system’s prognosis. Speaking with the world’s top Neuroscientists, A Life Unbound explores brain plasticity strategies and the role they can play in revolutionizing the human experience.

• You’re a stroke or brain injury survivor,
• You have a child with neurodevelopmental challenges,
• You are a caregiver, family member, or friend of someone who has such challenges,
• You’re curious to learn more about ABM NeuroMovement.

The film documents the work of Anat Baniel, the founder of Anat Baniel Method® NeuroMovement®, and features interviews with neuroscientists and neuroplasticity experts, including Dr. Michael Merzenich “the father of neuroplasticity,” Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor author of My Stroke of Insight, Dr. Martha Herbert author of The Autism Revolution, and Dr. Rick Hanson of Buddha’s Brain.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with a local ABM NeuroMovement Practitioner based in West Seattle, Paige Clark of Bright Mind Movement.

Laps with Lou to benefit Make-A-Wish @ Pathfinder K-8 School
May 31 @ 9:00 am – 2:30 pm

Retired Pathfinder K-8 PE teacher Lou Cutler returns to the school for his annual birthday run to raise money for Make-A-Wish – this year, 68 laps since he’s turning 68. His announcement:

Each year, as my birthday approaches, I have a pre-birthday celebration by running/walking the number of laps that correspond to my upcoming birthday. This year I will turn 68, and I will run 68 laps – that’s 11.4 miles! I will be accompanied for much of the run by over 500 students, staff and parents from the Pathfinder Community

The run began as a way for me to be thankful for my own good health while also encouraging my students to be physically active and give back to the community. Over the years, we have raised more than $70,000 for Make-A-Wish and I have no plans of stopping!

On Friday, May 31st, at 9:05 A.M., I will enjoy the best day of my year, as I witness the entire Pathfinder community come together to raise money to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Each year I draw on the bravery and inspiration that I derive from my interactions with Make A Wish kids and families and the fantastic encouragement and support I receive from the Pathfinder community to carry me through the final most difficult miles.

West Seattle High School 2019 all-school reunion
Jun 1 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-SCHOOL REUNION

First off – please note that we’re shaking things up a bit this year! With accessibility issues of many of our honored guests, and a very small cast of volunteers managing this event, we’ve opted for a MUCH simpler approach than in years past. Instead of breaking out into classrooms, we are designating tables for each range of years in or around the Commons, and for some in the Library. Think very large open house vibe. As laid out in the program map, tables will be organized chronologically by year range, so most of you will be next to the table of classes in the range above or behind you. No more climbing stairs, hunting for elusive rooms, traversing a daunting length of hallways, and dashing between classrooms to find and greet friends and family from other years.

We thank you in advance for supporting this change! As always, we welcome suggestions for improvement (highly recommended to be accompanied by offers for help ;) ), in our effort to maximize community and rapport while minimizing effort for planners and guests alike.

2019 Schedule of Events

4:00 – 5:30 pm View the Classic Cars showcased on SW Stevens outside the Historical entrance

4:00 – 4:30 pm Sign in, pick up programs, name tag and roam the halls

4:30 – 5:30 pm Individual Class Reunions in the Commons (or Library)

5:00 – 5:30 pm Hall of Fame Member’s video plays in the Theater

5:30 – 7:00 pm Presentations in the Theater: Scholarships Announcements, Recognition of the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1969, Hall of Fame Induction

And….

4:00 – 6:45 pm WSHS Baseball Team selling Mariners Tickets to benefit the WSHS Baseball

4:00 – 6:45 pm Refreshments available for purchase to benefit the Student Booster Club programs

Jun 1 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

As a full time guide, Hardy Ambassador, and influential leader in the industry, we are thrilled to have her expertise and enthusiasm here for our Fly Fest. On top of it all, Kate is one of the most approachable women in the industry, who loves to break down all facets of our sport to all who are interested.

Sanislo Elementary auction @ SSC Brockey Center
Jun 1 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

This year the auction is going to be at The Brockey Center at South Seattle College on June 1st, 2019 at 6p. Admission to the auction is $40 per person and we hope you consider joining us.

Sanislo Elementary School is building a network of dedicated individuals from throughout our community whose support and passion helps increase the chances of success for our children. Last year at Sanislo while we had a goal of raising just $20,000, we ended up exceeding this goal by 50%. We raised $30,000 thanks to all of your donations to Sanislo! The school used this money to support: mindfulness/social emotional learning, a learning garden, and scholarships for after school enrichment programs.

This year our need is even greater. I interviewed key stakeholders including the Principal in order to determine what aspect of the school was in greatest need of support. One of the largest challenges the school is facing is the increasing age of the books and other instruction materials. Our children are struggling to experience the joy of learning and self discovery partially because the average age of their books is more than 10 years old! Our library has become out of touch with reality and the children are not as motivated to participate in self guided learning as children at other schools. Help us bring the joy of learning to our children.

Our annual auction is coming up soon! We hope you can join us once again in supporting educational equity. Come enjoy an evening of fun with us: dinner, dancing, drinks, silent auction, and dancing
