Roxhill Elementary invites you (yes, you!) to help us build our new playground at our new school — the renovated E.C. Hughes Elementary — on Saturday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We need a total of 60 people to get the project done. Currently, we have 30.

Two shifts are available and no experience is necessary. We’ll have tools, refreshments and trained supervisors from PlayCreation to help us put together and install equipment. Lunch will also be provided.

We are working on making child care available on site. Children under age 17 may not be within the build-site. Students/children between 14 and 17 eligible for Service Learning Hours may assist with projects outside of the build-site under direct supervision of an adult.

We need two shifts of 30 people each.

Shift one: 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Shift two: 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All community members are welcome.

We’ll also share more information soon on another community work day to move engineered wood chips in place. The new playground for Roxhill students at E.C. Hughes will be open to the public in the fall. This project has been made possible by a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund grant.

Gator Green Fest is Gatewood’s annual summer celebration for the school and community. The fest will feature a Makery mobile art lab, other arts and crafts, face painting, bubbles, a food truck, and much more.

Gator Green Fest will also be an opportunity to check in on the progress Gatewood has made with our play field renovation … Our very exciting project is looking great and nearing completion in mid-June.

The Roxhill school building will not close but instead become the home to other Seattle Public Schools programs and services. SSC Admissions Workshop

South Seattle College will be holding an Admissions Workshop to assist future students and community members with the admission and enrollment process.

Attendees will get hands-on help completing their free college application. Additional topics covered include funding resources to help pay for college (including financial aid, scholarships and work study), one-on-one help with the Steps to Enroll and tips on registering for classes and new student orientation. The workshop is designed for future students interested in applying to South’s academic transfer and professional/technical career training programs, and information will also be shared on those pathways.

Our fifth and sixth graders at White Center Heights Elementary are embarking on a fantastic project to design, plan, and implement the school carnival through S.T.E.A.M. (Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics).

South Seattle College’s Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technology program will be holding an Open House to give prospective students the chance to learn more about the industry-sponsored Diesel Industrial Sector Cohort, or “DISC,” program, which offers on-the-job training and paid internship opportunities to students enrolled in South’s program. Attendees will also take a tour of South’s diesel classrooms, labs and facilities, meet with instructors and review the enrollment process.

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.

These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.

She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.

Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.

Brita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. We’ll have some special materials ordered for the event and all fly tying materials will be 10% off for ticket holders.

The West Seattle Soccer Club is hosting a 50th Anniversary Celebration from 12:30 pm-3:30 pm this Saturday, September 8th at Sealth Stadium.

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Denise Juneau is embarking on a comprehensive Listening and Learning Tour to gather an understanding of the district’s strengths, challenges, and what is most important for her to consider as plans are developed for the district’s future.

The tour will include regional town halls and language-based and/or culturally focused community meetings to ensure diverse perspectives and ideas are gathered. All meetings will be hosted or co-hosted with community partners.

1) Each seller must register on Flash Consign and pay a $6.00 fee in order to sell merchandise during the swap. They must carefully follow the guidelines to prepare for the event. Including:

Entering items to be sold into the Flash Consign System Before the Event Date.
Print price tags for all items before dropping off items.
Deliver items to the event location during designated drop off hours: Friday October 19th, from 3:00pm – 7:00pm

2) All sellers must acknowledge that there are two options for payout on sales made by each registered seller, and choose when dropping off merchandise on Friday October 19th.

The first option is to receive 70% cash/check from your total sales made. Mountain to Sound Outfitters withholds 30% of sales made by sellers who wish to receive cash/check.
The second option is to receive 100% of your sales in the form of store credit at Mountain to Sound Outfitters. Gift Cards will be distributed 5-7 days after the event.

3) Each seller must pick up unsold merchandise on Sunday October 21st between 3:30pm – 5:00pm. If items are not picked up during this time and we have not received contact from the seller in advance, items will be donated to a local non-profit at the end of day on Monday, October 22nd.

South Seattle College’s Nursing department will be holding information sessions for the Nursing Assistant Certified (NA-C) and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs. The Nursing Assistant Certified (NA-C) information session runs from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) information session from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Meet nursing department staff and faculty, learn more about the application process, and discover funding resources for college!

Learn more about the step up to middle school as well as the options in the greater West Seattle Area during our information night. Local public and private schools will be on hand to share information and provide guidance to elementary families.

v Deciphering acronyms – PPR, HSBP, AP, IB, CHIS, CTE, STEM, etc. – do you know what these are?

v Why and how to earn post-secondary credit (college or work credentials) in high school

For Shoreline and Seattle, the 24-credit graduation requirement starts with the class of 2021 (rising 10th graders) and beyond, as both districts have a 2-year waiver. Neither district has finalized plans for offering more credits beyond their current 6-period day/24 credit earning opportunities! YIKES

Dark and rainy days mean fly tying season is upon us. So join our guides, staff, and guest tyers as we grab our favorite brew and teach a variety of patterns for trout, steelhead, and the Puget Sound. Don’t miss out as these classes are a ton of fun and fill up fast!

We are making some exciting changes to the fly tying classes this year. As you will see, we have invited several guest tyers to teach this year, and each event is posted with the name of the fly, the instructor, and the difficulty so you will be able to pick and chose which evenings you would like to attend based on your interest and skill level. Southside Revolution is now the largest co-ed junior roller derby league in the country with over 85+ boys and girls playing on four active teams at Southgate Roller Rink.

Costume contest for the best Willy Wonka costume will happen at half-time.

Doors at 5:15pm, 1st Bout at 5:35pm. 2nd Bout at 7:00 pm $10 General Admission Adults, $5 Children 6-12, Children under 5 are free.

Capers Home of West Seattle hosts local jeweler Alizah Olivas.

Alizah’s collection features semi-precious stones, mixed metals in a single piece, and chains embellished with semi-precious stones. For this trunk show, Alizah will have everything from rings to bracelets to necklaces available for purchase. She makes all her jewelry by hand, and each piece is uniquely different. Her jewelry is the perfect gift this holiday season.

CAPERS is the home entertaining and gift shop in the West Seattle Junction that features locally sourced, eco-friendly, and fairly-traded products to make your house a home. Owner Lisa Myers and staf, dedicate both time and resources to help those in the neighborhood who are less fortunate.

*NEW* Evening Admission Workshop

Date: Tuesday, December 11, 2018

South Seattle College’s Admission Workshops are now held in the evenings to accommodate working professionals and high school students. Attendees will get hands-on help completing their free college application. Additional topics covered include funding resources to help pay for college (including financial aid, scholarships and work study), one-on-one help with the Steps to Enroll and tips on registering for classes and new student orientation. The workshop is designed for future students interested in applying to South’s academic transfer and professional/technical career training programs, and information will also be shared on those pathways.

Drop-ins are welcome, signing-up in advance is encouraged. Please visit the Admissions Workshop webpage to RSVP.

As you will see, we have invited several guest tyers to teach this year, and each event is posted with the name of the fly, the instructor, and the difficulty so you will be able to pick and chose which evenings you would like to attend based on your interest and skill level. Aviation Open House

South Seattle College’s Aeronautical Technology department, including the Aviation Maintenance Technology degree program, will be holding an open house from 6-7 p.m. in TEC 127. Meet with Aeronautical Technology department staff and faculty, learn more about the application process and discover funding resources for college!

Parents and seniors from West Seattle High School, Chief Sealth
International High School, and neighboring schools are invited to
attend this support night to complete their 2019-2020 FAFSA or WASFA.

This is the first step to receive financial aid for college. All
students are encouraged to complete this step regardless of income.

Individuals who would like to begin their FAFSA or WASFA should come
prepared with the following information for both the student and
parent(s):

• Email address
• Date of Birth
• Social Security Number
• Mailing address and telephone number
• Driver’s license or state issued identification card (non-mandatory)
• Tax forms for the year 2017, if you filed taxes
• W2’s, if married filing jointly or you did not file taxes
