Jun 21 @ 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Sanislo Elementary PTA’s first ever Rainbow Party on the Playground on Friday, June 21st in celebration of Pride month. It’s free and open to ALL!

We’re excited to get the party started w/local celebrity, DJ MZ ARTIZ from the historical Seattle Re-bar and encourage everyone to dawn their Pride colors to join us in parading around the playground for what we like to dub as a mini-Pride parade. We’d like to start having everyone parade around the playground starting at 5:30pm-ish. Bring a blanket, chairs or just find a comfy spot on the grass and let’s PARTY!

We’ll have donation collection containers should anyone be inclined to help us raise funds towards our Race & Equity and Diversity & Inclusion PTA initiatives which includes bringing in speakers, holding workshops, professional development, and adding anti-bias library materials along the subject matters of RACE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION to empower our students, their families and our community.

We are still looking for acoustic musical/entertainment performers and LGBTQ agencies whom are willing to donate their talent, time and information on the playground to entertain our families, friends, neighbors, et. al. Please contact Ebony Lee or Janay Destello at pta@sanislo.org if you can help.

Pocketful Of Poems @ Southwest Library
Jul 19 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

At the Southwest Library Branch: Create poems, haikus and artwork with award-wining author/illustrator Javaka Steptoe!

In this lively presentation, Javaka Steptoe will talk about poems and specifically what is a haiku and discuss the science behind the poems in the book A Pocketful of Poems. What are seasons? What happens in spring? How are butterflies created? And we’ll discuss the nature that is in each of the various poems while creating caterpillars and butterflies out of craft supplies. For ages 4-8.

Javaka Steptoe won the 2017 Caldecott Medal for his picture book biography Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Little, Brown). The book won many other honors, too, including the 2017 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, and multiple starred reviews. His debut picture book, In Daddy’s Arms I Am Tall: African Americans Celebrating Fathers (Lee & Low Books, ), earned him a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, in addition to a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Literature Work at the 1998 NAACP Image Awards. Since that time, Steptoe has illustrated and/or written more than a dozen books for youth readers, collaborating with some of the top names in the business—Walter Dean Myers, Nikki Grimes and Karen English. Javaka Steptoe travels extensively reading and conducting workshops at schools, libraries, museums, and conferences across the country and internationally.

This program is part of this year’s Summer of Learning program Explore Your World!, which encourages reading and activities around science, technology, technology, arts and math. We are offering over 250 free youth programs throughout the city this summer. You can pick up a Summer Action Guide at any Library location beginning June 24th.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is required. Online registration for this program opens two weeks before the program starts and closes three business days before the program date. Make changes to your registration after that date by calling 206-684-7455 or visiting the branch.

Space is limited at library events. Please come early to make sure you get a seat. Due to the fire code, we can’t exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms.

Get Fit Kick off August 17th Saturday at 8 am:

Come out for one mile to kick off your training for the Seattle Half Marathon! We will start with one mile and it is fine to run, run/walk or walk! This program is designed for BEGINNERS!! We look forward to coaching you through training with group runs on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. We designed this as a Couch-to-Half Marathon program, so no experience as a runner is necessary. We will be providing clinics along the way to teach you all you need to know. This is a free program and we encourage you to share with your family and friends and neighbors!
Did you know?
1) Runners are at lower risk for developing cataracts
2) Running improves performance on cognitive tasks, including memory and visuospatial functioning, executive functioning, attention and reaction times
3) Running enhances creativity
4) Running reduces risk for Alzheimer’s, stroke and cardiovascular disease by: slowing/stopping the typical age-related loss in brain tissue and preserving brain structures like your frontal lobe and hippocampus (this in part has to do with blood flow improvements, but also increasing connectivity in key areas and lowering inflammation
5) Running can provide short and long-term healing for anxiety and depression (think improving neurotransmitter functioning, strengthening brain structures and a sense of self-efficacy, just to scrape the surface)

Get Fit Information Nights at West Seattle Runner: Wed Aug 7th and Aug 14th at 7 pm (you only need to attend one)

Sexual assault legislation information @ The Hall at Fauntleroy
Aug 14 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

From 34th District Democrats: The August monthly meeting will include a very special program. Our very own Leah Griffin will provide a very important and inspiring program that we think you won’t want to miss! Leah is our KCDCC Committee Rep and a school librarian who works on sexual assault policy reform at the state and federal levels. In 2015, she was appointed to the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Task Force in the Washington legislature with the aim of solving the myriad of problems survivors encounter navigating the justice system in Washington State. She also helped write and lobby for the Survivors’ Access to Supportive Care Act with Senator Murray and Representative Jayapal to increase access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners in hospitals. Leah connects her work to her community by working with the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, Legal Voice, RISE, and Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest.

Leah will speak about the state of sexual assault legislation and reform in Washington and her advocacy for women. She will address the issues survivors face, what has been accomplished, and what’s next.

Content Warning: Please Be Advised That There Will Be Discussion Of Subject Matter Concerning Sexual Assault.

Our potluck social begins at 6:30pm and the business meeting will follow at 7pm. Leah’s presentation and Q&A will follow. Please come out and learn what’s going on in this critical space.

‘Be There’ Rally 2019 @ West Seattle Elementary School
Sep 4 @ 7:00 am – 8:00 am

The community is invited to attend the fourth annual Be There Rally at West Seattle Elementary on Wednesday, September 5th, from 7:00 am to 8:00 am. The school, in partnership with Seattle Housing Authority, High Point, is rolling out the red carpet and asking community leaders, school supporters, family and friends to line up to cheer, clap, and high-five students as they enter into the new school year.

School leaders are calling for 100 men and women to line the red carpet, dressed for success and ready to lead by example and cheer on High Point youth. Research shows that children whose family and community take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.

Your presence at the school on the first day will support efforts to build valuable partnerships with families and members of the community to support student learning and positive academic outcomes.

“Write YOUR Story” Weekly Writing Workshop @ Curious Kidstuff Toy Store
Sep 25 @ 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm

“Write YOUR Story” is now enrolling for fall 2019 writing workshops! These are free writing workshops for children 8-12.

Workshops run 3:15pm to 4:15pm, every Wednesday from September 25 to December
18. (There will be no class Nov. 13.)

All sessions are taught by West Seattle residents Julia Douthwaite Viglione, PhD, and Greg Estes.

Participation in the series is free of charge. In return for this unique opportunity, though, participants are expected to attend every class.

The fall 2019 theme is Journeys. We will read stories about: 1) The journey to a new home: Jean de Brunhoff’s “The Story of Babar,” 2) The initiation journey: Darcy Pattison’s “The River Dragon,” and 3) A maritime adventure: Gloria Rand’s “Aloha, Salty!”

The free writing workshops were established in 2012 in South Bend, Indiana by Notre Dame Professor Julia Douthwaite Viglione (French language and literature) who returned home to West Seattle last year and brought “Write YOUR Story” to Seattle. Join kids from local schools as we read and rewrite a classic children’s story. In the second half, children write their own stories and a great party is had at the end!
