Seattle Audubon community conversation @ C & P Coffee Company
Feb 28 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Wednesday, 2/28, Seattle Audubon is hosting a community meeting at C&P Coffee from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Seattle Audubon has made significant investment in two new program areas — communications and community engagement. We heard from our community that they want to better understand what we’re up to and how we do our work, and we want to get better at making and sustaining connections with our members. We know we have work to do to engage with our constituents across our chapter’s area, which includes more than the city of Seattle.

In 2018, we’re launching a series of community meetings, what we’re calling “listening sessions,” designed to help us spend more time with and better get to know communities across our geography. We hope that you’ll come and join us to hear about our 2018 plans, talk about how you can engage in that work, and primarily, we want to better get to know our West Seattle community and the conservation issues on your minds. We’re here to help and we look forward to the conversation.

Event: West Seattle Chamber Luncheon – Needle Cleanup, Graffiti and Illegal Dumping – SPU Speaks Out

“Tracy Cramer, Lead Clean City Inspector housed in Seattle Public Utilities, is a real hands on, down-to-earth person who knows and is excited about her program”, reported Jim Guenther. “Her area of emphasis is needles, graffiti and illegal dumping, which I believe impacts our business community and West Seattle in general. She describes the program very well, including an explanation of the reporting system. This system is said to be in the implementation stage, which Tracy refers to as ‘alpha’. Her message is not to tell us what we must do, but to help us in addressing these problems.”

•Sharps, yes we are talking needle cleanup

•Graffiti on private property

Highway 99 tunnel toll feedback meeting in West Seattle @ High Point Community Center
Jun 5 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

The public process of setting toll rates for the State Route 99 tunnel is starting and the Washington State Transportation Commission is seeking public comment on toll rate options under consideration. Interested persons can provide comments to the commission at upcoming public meetings in Seattle or they can provide comments electronically …

The commission has spent more than a year studying and assessing all aspects of tolling the SR 99 tunnel, including various toll rate levels, possible toll exemptions, estimated traffic diversion to city streets, and effects of tolling on freight movement. Based upon this analysis, the commission has developed three possible toll rate options, on which it now wants the public to weigh in.

The Legislature made the decision to toll the tunnel in 2012 (RCW 47.56.862). The commission is charged with making sure tolls generate enough revenue to cover specific costs as required under the law, including toll operations, maintenance, and debt payments associated with the construction of the tunnel. In 2018, the Legislature directed that initial toll rates will not cover future repair and replacement costs, such as for the roadway and ventilation systems for the SR 99 tunnel. Proposed future toll rate increases would need to be re-evaluated if the Legislature determines these costs should be covered by toll revenue.

Toll Rate Options

The three toll rate options currently under consideration would be in effect from when tolling begins in 2019 through at least June 2020:

Option A:

Toll rates range from $1.50 – $2.25 during peak travel times and $1 overnight.
The midday toll rate is $1.25.
There are four different toll rates over six time periods on weekdays.
Beginning in July 2022, toll rates increase 3 percent, every three years for all days of the week.

Option B:

Toll rates range from $1.50 – $2.25 during peak travel times and $1 overnight.
The midday toll rate is $1.
There are four different toll rates over eight time periods on weekdays.
Beginning in July 2020, there will be annual toll rate increases of 3.5 percent for five years that will apply to the weekday rates only.

Option C:

Toll rates range from $1.50 – $2.25 during peak travel times and $1 overnight.
The midday toll rate is $1.25.
There are five different toll rates over seven time periods on weekdays.
There are no toll rate increases during first five years of tolling. Then there are three toll rate increases of five percent each, taking place in July of 2024, 2029, and 2034, for all days of the week.

Public Comment Opportunities

The commission will hold public input meetings in early June in Seattle to gather comments on the three toll-rate options under consideration. The meetings are as follows:

(one in West Seattle)

· Tuesday, June 5

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.: Open house on tunnel project and tolling

6:30 – 8 p.m.: Public input meeting on tolling options

High Point Community Center, Multipurpose Room
6920 34th Ave. SW, Seattle

More information on the tolling options under consideration, and additional ways the public can comment, can be found on the commission’s web site under “pending actions” at: http://wstc.wa.gov/ The Transportation Commission is taking public comment on these tolling options until July 17. An official proposal will be announced in mid-July 2018, followed by an additional public comment period before toll rates are finalized in fall 2018.

Fly-tying with Brita Fordice at Emerald Water Anglers
Aug 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Brita Fordice was born, raised and learned to fish in Washington state. She taught herself to tie flies at age 10. Once she started, she never stopped.

These days she is an accomplished angler and guide on the beaches of the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, where her custom patterns really shine for cutthroat and salmon. Her flies have been featured in national magazines and she currently works for Sage Manufacturing in their research and development department.

She will be in the shop tying her remarkable baitfish patterns on the evening of Thursday, August 23.

Anyone interested in chasing fish that feed on other fish, either in fresh or salt water, or anyone interested in learning from masterful fly tying shouldn’t miss this event. Brita’s meticulous flatwings, squid, eel and shrimp patterns are uncanny representations of baitfish species.

EWA Fly Shop
August 23rd, 7 pm

Brita will start tying at 7:00 pm. She’ll work through a series of patterns and techniques and answer questions for an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 and available here. We’ll have some special materials ordered for the event and all fly tying materials will be 10% off for ticket holders.

Feet First Walk & Talk: West Seattle Light Rail
OCTOBER 16, 2018 @ 4:30 PM — 6:30 PM

Explore potential sites for the West Sesattle Sound Transit Link light rail stations

Learn about site locations and discuss options during this free tour and post-gathering at Ounces Taproom

Explore potential West Seattle Sound Transit Link light rail stations with King County Council Chair Joe McDermott, Sound Transit officials, and community leaders.

Feet First is pleased to host this one-of-kind opportunity to connect community members with local leaders and public officials in a forum for open discussion about pedestrian safety and accessibility in the community. We will visit Link light rail station alternatives at West Seattle Junction, Avalon, and Delridge.* Sound Transit is currently evaluating and gathering public input on potential station sites.

The Link light rail site selections will influence West Seattle development over the coming decades, including whether or not people have safe and accessible walkways. We will discuss tradeoffs between the various site alternatives and how to ensure good walking access to the light rail system.

Don’t miss out on the post-Walk & Talk refreshments at Ounces Taproom & Beer Garden! Join us for further discussion, a thirst-quenching selection of Washington beers and delicious food from the Bella M’Briana food truck. Ounces will generously provide a percentage of beer sales from the evening to Feet First.

Surveillance technology meeting @ American Legion Post 160
Oct 25 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

One of these meetings is in West Seattle, on October 25th. Here’s the full city announcement:

The City of Seattle will hold a series of five public meetings and ask for public comment regarding an initial six of the 29 technologies that meet the City’s definition of a surveillance, as defined in the City’s Surveillance Ordinance (ORD # 125376), which went into effect on September 1, 2017. The meetings will feature a short presentation on the technologies and then attendees will break down into small group discussions. As required under the legislation, the public comment period for these technologies opened on Monday, October 8 and will run through Monday, November 5. The schedule and location of these public meetings is listed below. The West Seattle location, which is highlighted, has been moved to the American Legion Post 160 of West Seattle (West Seattle Legion Hall) on Alaska Street.

The recent update to the Surveillance Ordinance is grounded in current issues of government surveillance against historically and unfairly targeted communities, including undocumented immigrants. Departments hope to address potential community concerns about these technologies by providing details on the policies that govern their use.

To promote informed engagement, the City of Seattle has produced one-page overviews of each technology to supplement the Surveillance Impact Reports available for review. In the interest of equity, these, the flyers announcing the public meetings, and other materials have been translated into seven of the City’s common non-English languages, which are also available at seattle.gov/privacy.

A member of the public may provide comments in three ways:

attendance at any of the meetings listed below
mail comments to Attn: Surveillance & Privacy Program, Seattle IT, PO Box 94709, Seattle, WA 98124
submit a comment online at seattle.gov/privacy.
This is the first round of public comment and covers technologies used for parking, traffic, and emergency response. No new surveillance technologies have been submitted for review since the Ordinance went into effect on September 1, 2017. For information on the technologies or Surveillance Ordinance visit seattle.gov/privacy.

Comments will be included in revised Surveillance Impact Reports and submitted to the newly created Surveillance Working Group, made up of external partners, for a civil liberties and equity assessment. The final Surveillance Impact Report will be presented to City Council and available to the public.

The location for the WS meeting 5-6:30 pm October 25th has changed to American Legion Post 160.

Longfellow Creek Flood Reduction & Trail Connection Project drop-in session
Nov 17 @ 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

From the announcement flyer and project webpage:

Join us to see preliminary design concepts and share your thoughts!

Based on input from the community and city agencies, preliminary design concepts have been
developed to reduce flooding and improve trail connections along Longfellow Creek from SW Willow St
to SW Graham St.

Stop by our tent anytime from 12:30 – 3:30 to:
• See design concepts for the street, intersection, creek and trail corridors
• Ask questions and talk to the project team
• Share your thoughts on the design concepts
• Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate and talk to neighbors

About the project
Neighbors on 24th Ave SW and the non-profit organization Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group
were awarded grant funding to address flooding issues, redesign the street corridor and improve
Longfellow Legacy Trail Connections.

Over recent months, the project team has met with community members and partner agencies to begin
developing preliminary design concepts. Following this drop-in session, the team will continue to work
with the community to refine the design. A final design concept will be presented in early 2019.

The team will work to incorporate the needs of the community while balancing the requirements of
permitting agencies into the proposed final design concept. The community will be engaged through
one-on-one meetings, emails, phone calls, and community meetings throughout the design process.

Viaduct closure info session @ Delridge Community Center
Nov 26 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Beginning with Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) permanent closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct on January 11 and continuing over the next five years, Seattle is entering a new era of tough traffic. As we make important public and private investments to help keep pace with our fast-growing city, our bad traffic is going to be even more difficult for everyone. We need your help to get ready!

Please join the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and the Seattle Department of Transportation for an information session on the upcoming permanent closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct as WSDOT realigns SR 99, the new SR 99 tunnel that will open in early February, and the other upcoming challenges to our transportation system as we build a better city.

We hope you can join us at any of the five following information sessions:

Monday, November 26
Delridge Community Center
4501 Delridge Way SW
6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

In addition, Seattle Department of Transportation has launched a new website at www.seattle.gov/traffic to provide you with the latest information, tools, and resources you’ll need to move safely to and through downtown.

Seattle Stand Down Event for Homeless and At-Risk Veterans @ South Seattle College Georgetown Campus
Dec 13 @ 7:00 am – 4:00 pm

South Seattle College’s Georgetown Campus will host the eighth annual Seattle Stand Down on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, where homeless and at-risk veterans and their families will be offered free access to a wide array of resources and services.

The Seattle Stand Down, a volunteer team of veterans dedicated to supporting veterans experiencing homelessness, is a one-stop shop for resources and services available to veterans who currently lack permanent housing or simply need a “hand up” in order to prevent homelessness.

Representatives from local businesses, non-profits, educational institutions, and all levels of government will be on hand with volunteers to provide medical screenings, eye exams, dental services, legal aid, employment opportunities, housing assistance, case management referrals, haircuts, personal hygiene items and meals.  The two-day event will also offer employment assistance and legal resources.

Services and resources will be provided at the Gene Colin Education Hall – Bldg C, 6737 Corson Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98108. Parking passes will be made available to veterans receiving services.

The Seattle Stand Down is unique from other stand down events in that it has a separate area designated for women where they can feel safe and comfortable. Providers will offer services specifically for women veterans including health care, advocacy, counseling, employment and personal care.

The Seattle Stand Down was founded as a community service project of student veterans at Seattle Central College. The Seattle Colleges District has hosted the event since its inception eight years ago.  Major funding for the Seattle Stand Down has been made possible through a Veterans Employment and Training Service grant from the U.S. Department of Labor as well as additional funding through the King County Veterans Program, funded by the Veteran, Seniors and Human Services Levy.

Restorative Justice and Healing @ Youngstown Theater
Jan 21 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Join us for Restorative Justice and Healing, our MLK Day of Service event in partnership with United Way of King County. Childcare and community dinner are provided.

In honoring Dr. King on this day of service, DNDA will engage Delridge and surrounding communities in constructive conversation about how race and justice influence each other in modern-day America. In examining what it means to have justice, this event will bring together neighbors of all ethnicities and races to bridge our differences and communicate through a restorative justice approach.

Utilizing the peacemaking circle, participants will engage in a non-hierarchical discussion and learn through the collective wisdom embedded in the stories and lived experiences of all participants.

This event will include a screening of the film Healing Justice, which explores the causes and consequences of the U.S. justice system and its effect on marginalized communities.

Local service-based organizations will be invited to participate and advocate for the resources they provide—including organizations like Hate Free Delridge and Young Women Empowered. Following the event, all participants and volunteers will be invited to continue discussing over a community dinner.

Please register here by Jan 18, 2019.

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA meeting
Jan 22 @ 6:30 pm

From the Fairmount Park Elementary PTA website:

Fairmount Park Elementary PTA General Membership Meetings

We need help from all of our parents and teachers to continue raising funds to support school initiatives. By becoming a member of PTA and attending meetings, parents can also stay informed of the events and decisions taking place at our school. We strongly encourage everyone to renew or start a new membership for only $15 per person.

To join, simply attend our next PTA meeting or register online (http://www.fpepta.org). This gives you a vote (voice) on how your fundraising dollars are spent towards our amazing programs: music & art, enhanced assemblies, the Backpack program, student wellness, parent education events, and much more.

General Membership Meetings for the 2018/19 school year will take place at the school cafeteria, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

All are welcome to attend. Child-care services will likely be available for these meetings. Contact board@fpepta.org with questions.

Tie One On Tuesdays: Fly-tying at Emerald Water Anglers
Feb 5 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join us for fly tying and beer at Emerald Water Anglers!

Dark and rainy days mean fly tying season is upon us. So join our guides, staff, and guest tyers as we grab our favorite brew and teach a variety of patterns for trout, steelhead, and the Puget Sound. Don’t miss out as these classes are a ton of fun and fill up fast!

We are making some exciting changes to the fly tying classes this year. As you will see, we have invited several guest tyers to teach this year, and each event is posted with the name of the fly, the instructor, and the difficulty so you will be able to pick and chose which evenings you would like to attend based on your interest and skill level. Please use the links (below) to sign up for each class. Space is limited; therefore, only those who have completed the online payment process will be included. – $20/BYOB

Thank you for all the support we have had for these tying classes. As a shop, we couldn’t be more excited about the growing community of fly tyers!
