Pop-Up Benefit for Local Artist Christine Olson @ Capers
Jan 26 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Aid to an artist … at least that is what we’re hoping for.

Popular and beloved Capers-art walk artist Christine Helen Olson has had a tough holiday season. Many of you may have heard of the early-morning fire in Fremont on Christmas Eve that badly damaged Sfingiday, Christine’s newly-opened gift and art gallery that supports art and fine crafts created by artists from around the U.S.

The cause was arson.

Capers is supporting Christine with a Sfingiday pop-up while she gets back on her feet.

Christine will be with us showing her paintings and work from many of the artists and crafts folks she promotes.

We’d like your help. Please come. Join us for a sip and a bite. Please invite your customers. Bring friends, neighbors, your posse, and peeps. Bring smiling faces, warm hugs, well wishes, and any support you can.

Purchases appreciated.

Donations accepted.

All proceeds directly benefit Christine’s gallery.

Memorial Day poppy distribution at WS Thriftway
May 25 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join American Legion Post 160 and ALA Unit 160 this Saturday May 25 and Sunday May 26 at the Morgan Junction Thriftway where members will distribute bright red poppies in honor of our fallen service members. The poppy has become an internationally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. One hundred percent of donations go directly to help local veterans.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

Each year, members of The American Legion family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

‘Mini Seattle-to-Portland’ bike ride to Summer Fest @ Hamilton Viewpoint Park
Jul 14 @ 9:15 am – 1:00 pm

Ride the Mini Seattle (Street) to Portland (Street) to Summer Fest again this year:

Sunday, July 14, 2019 – 9:15 am to 1:00 pm

Have you ever wanted to do the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride? And forgot to sign up or train for it? Here is your big chance! Do it in 2 hours! Same weekend as Cascade’s big STP, so you too can brag at the water cooler and post pix. West Seattle Bike Connections members will be leading the little STP again from SW Seattle Street in the Admiral neighborhood to SW Portland Street in Fauntlee Hills, and back north to Summerfest at the West Seattle Junction, for a fabulous finish line party.

Family friendly and fun! This is a West Seattle Bike Connections and Cascade Bicycle Club ride. Helmets required. You are encouraged to pre-register and see more ride information at https://cascade.org/node/69289

Check brakes and tires. Arrive by 9:15 for route/safety intro. Helmets required. No ear buds. Pre-register or on the spot. Rolling at 9:30.

Family friendly and fun! Easy pace. We will stay together and work together to cross any busy intersections. This will be a Cascade Bicycle Club approved ride.

For children and youth riding their own bikes: parent or guardian please read and conform to Cascade’s policy. Contact ride leader for 2-way communication at least a day in advance. All who are capable of riding the distance on streets with some hills are most welcome!

7.5 miles to SW Portland and on to Summer Fest at the Junction. Another 2.7 miles to get back to the Hamilton Viewpoint start. Route is mostly on quieter residential streets along the ridge parallel to California Avenue SW. Some hills, including a block or two we might walk up.

Steady rain cancels. We ride if there are just light showers.

Cycle History 2019: The Places of Community @ Highland Park Improvement Club
Aug 31 @ 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Cycle History 2019: The Places of Community

The Log House Museum and West Seattle Bike Connections present: The Places of Community.

Join us for a ride from Highland Park Improvement Club (HPIC) on an 8.8 mile route at a leisurely pace (10-12 mph)!

The theme for this ride is Community Gathering Places. We will stop at several places in West Seattle where neighbors have come together to socialize, garden, play music, talk about the neighborhood, and play outside, in places planned and built by neighbors. Knowledgeable local historians will tell us stories.

This will be the third annual Cycle History ride hosted by Southwest Seattle Historical Society and West Seattle Bike Connections.

Let’s meet at the HPIC at 9:30 am for our pre-ride safety briefing and ride theme description. Then, let’s depart at 10:00 am.

We will climb and descend hills at our own pace, and our goal will be to stay together. We will take it very easy on the hills on this route.

Restrooms are available at the start. We will stop along the way for restrooms and water at mile 8.2 at Highland Park Playfield.

There will be no food stops. Bring snacks if you wish.

You are encouraged to pre-register on the Cascade Bicycle Club page. There is no need to unregister if you decide not to ride. Pre-registration closes at 7:30 am on day of ride. After 7:30, just show up and register at the start.

Kids are welcome. Parents/guardians please read and comply with Cascade’s policies for children riding their own bikes.

Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.

Any kind of bike is OK. Please check your tires, brakes and chain in advance.

Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion–steady rain cancels–or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions, the Ride Leader will post a ride-canceled note in the Comments section on the Cascade Bicycle Club page at least two hours prior to the start, and Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location.

We hope you can join us!

Opened in 2009, the Longhouse is a traditional cedar post and beam structure designed in the Puget Salish Longhouse style. It houses a Native Art Gallery, Duwamish History Museum, Gift Shop, Duwamish Tribal Offices, and traditional Longhouse. As in ancient times, Longhouse is the site where tribal business is conducted and cultural & educational events are held. It is the first Duwamish Longhouse built since the last one was burned down in West Seattle in 1894 to push the Duwamish off their land. In 1851, there were over 90 Duwamish Longhouses.
