The Artist as Storyteller Speaker Series, supported by the Seattle Colleges Performing Arts Fund, welcomes BIPOC artists, performers, and activists to share their work and connect with students and community members about what it means to be an artist in today’s social and cultural climate. The series emphasizes the artmaking and storytelling process as it relates to the individual and community.

In this conversation, we’ll chat with Butylene and One about their work as Seattle-based Latinx drag performers, how the pandemic has impacted their ability to perform, and how drag is a form of transgressive joy, resilience, community-making, and medicine.

Artist Bios:
Butylene [BYOO-duh-leen] is a Xicanx, two spirit, gender fluid, artist, dancer, musician and brujx living on the unceded Coast Salish and Duwamish land known as Seattle. Her authentic, high-energy performance style draws from the medicine of the moment and is often inspired by what she sees as the energetic needs of the collective.

One is a Colombian-born Seattle-based drag performer whose body of work focuses on the intersection between camp drag and performance art. One is best known as the current reigning Miss Bacon Strip and as a founding member and performer at Glory Hole, a drag/art show voted best show in town in 2019.

We are committed to making these events accessible for everyone, so the concerts themselves are free and open to the community. ALKI BEACH AND NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP
1st Saturday of every month, 10 AM to 2 PM

Pick sticks and buckets provided – RSVP to reserve one. Feel free to bring your own. Supervised kids welcome. Behaved dogs welcome off beach. We spread out to cover most surface. Stay as long as you desire; go as far as you would like. The goal is to collect the garbage before it enters the beach and ocean. We can gather after for a distancing coffee if time allows.
