By Dominique Morisseau
OBIE and Steinberg Playwright Award-winning playwright

When the tough, independent Nina is visited by her father, a former revolutionary in the Black liberation movement, she can’t tell what he’s after–a fix to their broken relationship, or the cache of letters that ties their fates together. As father and daughter circle one another, old wounds are revealed, generational differences exposed, and blazing truths laid bare. Morisseau’s smart, entertaining and moving story about family, survival and the nature of liberation is “not only dynamic, it’s dynamite” (The New York Times).

Sunset Baby

By Dominique Morisseau
OBIE and Steinberg Playwright Award-winning playwright
Seattle premiere

When the tough, independent Nina is visited by her father, a former revolutionary in the Black liberation movement, she can’t tell what he’s after–a fix to their broken relationship, or the cache of letters that ties their fates together. As father and daughter circle one another, old wounds are revealed, generational differences exposed, and blazing truths laid bare. Morisseau’s smart, entertaining and moving story about family, survival and the nature of liberation is “not only dynamic, it’s dynamite” (The New York Times).

Why are the gains made by one generation so often casually thrown away by the next? And what are the things we do for love?” – The Guardian

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Oct 5 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society

Words, Writers & Southwest Stories: Jeff Smoot @ Southwest Library
Oct 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

At the Southwest Branch library, join us as we welcome climbing author Jeff Smoot, who will be sharing stories and images from his new memoir “Hangdog Days: Conflict, Change, and the Race for 5.14”

Jeff Smoot’s new book chronicles the era when rock climbing exploded in popularity, attracting a new generation of talented climbers eager to reach new heights via harder routes and faster ascents. This contentious, often humorous period gave rise to sport climbing, climbing gyms, and competitive climbing indelibly changing the culture of the sport, transforming it into what we know today.

One of those young climbers, writer Jeff Smoot, traces the development over time of traditional climbing “rules,” enforced first through peer pressure, then later through intimidation and sabotage. In the late ’70s, several climbers began introducing new tricks including “hangdogging”— hanging on gear to practice moves— considered cheating by the old guard. As more climbers broke ranks with traditional style, this new gymnastic approach pushed the limits of climbing from 5.12 to 5.13. When French climber Jean-Baptiste Tribout ascended the 5.14a To Bolt or Not to Be at Smith Rock in 1986, he broke a previously thought impenetrable barrier. John Bachar, Todd Skinner, Ray Jardine, Lynn Hill, Mark Hudon, Tony Yaniro, Alan Watts, and others star in this lively period of the sport.

Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Sep 26 – Oct 20, 2019
Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:30 pm
Sundays at 3 pm

“…smart, entertaining and moving…while asking penetrating questions about the nature of liberation. Is it possible to be a good revolutionary and a good parent? Why are the gains made by one generation so often casually thrown away by the next? And what are the things we do for love?” – The Guardian

Fall nature outings are open for registration now!  Sign up for the popular nighttime walks, bird tours, mushroom walks, and so much more…

Winter Wander Along Longfellow Creek at Camp Long.

Longfellow Creek is a major waterway in West Seattle. It is also a little piece of the wild in the middle of the city. Coho salmon migrate up this waterway; beavers build dams and lodges on this creek; owls hunt for food along this artery. Explore a portion of this urban wilderness with a Seattle Urban Nature Guide. Look for seasonal changes and get to know some of your wild neighbors.

Be prepared to do some hiking over uneven terrain on this program.

Ages 6 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Everyone attending the program must be registered.

Free dinner every Sunday night in West Seattle!

Everyone is welcome at High Point Community Dinner!

We gather, along with our volunteers, every Sunday night to eat dinner together and hear a story about Jesus. With an informal setting that centers around the meal and conversation, everyone is welcome to come just for the meal, or to stay longer to hear the talk and have a chance to discuss with friends.

The dinner is complemented by art and music! We often have an artist doing live paintings, a kids’ art table, and live music.
