Dinky Con 2019

What: Dinky Con is a first-time mini pop culture convention that is being held at Alki Masonic Hall in West Seattle.

Dinky Con is a one-day event on September 21st. This is a cosplay convention which means people will be dressed in costumes, depicting characters from movies, anime, comics, video games, etc. There will be an Artist Alley, full of local artists making amazing art to sell — mainly focused on different fandoms — including prints, charms, stickers, bows, and more! Come take a look and buy some cool stuff for yourself or as a gift! As the event focuses on cosplay, we will of course have a Cosplay Contest! They have 3 judges and an MC all with a lot of cosplay experience that can’t wait to see some cosplayers strut their stuff.

There will be concessions sold by the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls of West Seattle, Laurel (Black Diamond), and Kent assemblies. This organization is for girls 11-20 and encourages confident, well-spoken, compassionate women. They do so much service around the community and concession proceeds go towards their organization. There will also have games, coloring, and panels.

Where: Alki Masonic Hall 4736 40th Ave SW,

When: The event will be from 11 am-10 pm so drop in any time.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Oct 5 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society

Seattle CityClub hosts District 1 City Council debate on Oct. 10 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center

District 1 Seattle City Council incumbent Lisa Herbold and candidate Phillip Tavel will vie for support on Thursday, Oct. 10, in a voter-engaged debate hosted by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Seattle CityClub. The event, which is free and open to the public, will also be broadcast and reported widely thanks to partnerships with local media.

The debate — one of seven debates for all City Council races to be held within or very close to district boundaries — will take place at 6 p.m. at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, 4408 Delridge Way SW.

Financial support for the debates is provided by presenting sponsor Amazon, signature sponsor AARP Washington and district-level debate sponsors BNSF Railway, PEMCO, Seattle Credit Union, UW Evans School of Public Policy & Governance and Washington Policy Center Young Professionals. Community partners lending their in-kind support to the event include Goodwill, GSBA, Forterra, Solid Ground, and the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission.

CityClub expressed its gratitude to these organizations for supporting open civic dialogue for these important races. Sponsors and partners have no influence over the format, content, questions or other elements of the debates.

While tickets to attend the debates are free, seating is limited and registration is required. Go to SeattleCityClub.org/local-debates to learn more and register.

Words, Writers & Southwest Stories: Jeff Smoot @ Southwest Library
Oct 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

At the Southwest Branch library, join us as we welcome climbing author Jeff Smoot, who will be sharing stories and images from his new memoir “Hangdog Days: Conflict, Change, and the Race for 5.14”

Jeff Smoot’s new book chronicles the era when rock climbing exploded in popularity, attracting a new generation of talented climbers eager to reach new heights via harder routes and faster ascents. This contentious, often humorous period gave rise to sport climbing, climbing gyms, and competitive climbing indelibly changing the culture of the sport, transforming it into what we know today.

One of those young climbers, writer Jeff Smoot, traces the development over time of traditional climbing “rules,” enforced first through peer pressure, then later through intimidation and sabotage. In the late ’70s, several climbers began introducing new tricks including “hangdogging”— hanging on gear to practice moves— considered cheating by the old guard. As more climbers broke ranks with traditional style, this new gymnastic approach pushed the limits of climbing from 5.12 to 5.13. When French climber Jean-Baptiste Tribout ascended the 5.14a To Bolt or Not to Be at Smith Rock in 1986, he broke a previously thought impenetrable barrier. John Bachar, Todd Skinner, Ray Jardine, Lynn Hill, Mark Hudon, Tony Yaniro, Alan Watts, and others star in this lively period of the sport.

Presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Free community dinner @ High Point Community Center
Apr 26 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Free dinner every Sunday night in West Seattle!

Everyone is welcome at High Point Community Dinner!

We gather, along with our volunteers, every Sunday night to eat dinner together and hear a story about Jesus. With an informal setting that centers around the meal and conversation, everyone is welcome to come just for the meal, or to stay longer to hear the talk and have a chance to discuss with friends.

The dinner is complemented by art and music! We often have an artist doing live paintings, a kids’ art table, and live music.

“Drinking Liberally in West Seattle” meetup @ Pizzeria 22
May 5 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Drinking Liberally West Seattle – Talking Politics

First Tuesday every month, 6 pm. Pizzeria 22 is at College Street and California Ave SW in Admiral.

An informal, inclusive progressive social group.

Drinking Liberally is an organization with chapters across the country. It gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics, or whatever. You don’t need to be a policy expert and this isn’t a book club – just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it’s not taboo to talk politics. Consumption of alcohol is not required and our location is all ages.
