Community Celebration for South Park Branch Library reopening @ South Park Branch Library
Jul 21 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Great things are happening in the South Park community! Join us to celebrate the reopening of The Seattle Public Library’s South Park Branch and the first anniversary of the release and implementation of the Duwamish Valley Action Plan—the city of Seattle’s environmental justice, equitable development and anti-displacement strategy for this area of the city.

The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21 at the South Park Branch, 8604 Eighth Ave. S., 206-615-1688. Brief remarks will be made by Seattle’s Chief Librarian Marcellus Turner, Seattle City Councilmember Lisa Herbold, Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) Director Jessica Finn Coven, and The Seattle Public Library Foundation’s Debbie McNeil.

The event will include a resource fair with city and neighborhood partners, including the Library and OSE, the Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Office of Planning & Community Development (OPCD), and more. Also featured will be free crafts and face painting, an appearance by the Bubbleman, a giant inflatable slide for all ages, a selfie booth, and a neighborhood taco truck, including free lunch for the first 100 people!

About the Library branch refurbishment
The 12-year-old branch was temporarily closed April 16, 2019 to allow for repainting and recarpeting. During the branch closure, the Library made additional improvements to support the changing ways patrons are using libraries and to make the branch a more enjoyable space to read, study and collaborate.
“These improvements allowed us to more effectively serve a growing and diverse community, as well as support a wider variety of patron uses, services and local partnerships,” said Turner. “Our priority is to make sure our libraries meet the needs of the community.”

To meet the needs of the South Park community, this refurbishment delivers flexible, collaborative spaces with additional electrical outlets and more mobile shelving and furniture. These newly designed spaces will allow students to work together, while providing the Library and the community an opportunity to creatively use these flexible spaces for a variety of programs.

About the Duwamish Valley Action Plan
In June 2018, the city of Seattle released the Duwamish Valley Action Plan, a city and community vision to promote collaboration and guide the city’s work and investments in the Duwamish Valley for years to come. The plan is part of the larger Duwamish Valley Program, a multi-departmental effort led by OSE and OPCD to address racial and neighborhood-level disparities, reduce health inequities, advance environmental justice, build community capacity, create stronger economic pathways and opportunity, and build trust in government.
“The Action Plan combines the Duwamish Valley communities’ ambitious vision with the practical steps we’ll need to take to achieve our bold environmental justice, equitable development, and anti-displacement goals,” said Finn Coven. “I am proud of the work we have done to implement the Action Plan in the last 12 months and look forward to celebrating this success with the South Part community.”

Background information
The 5,019-square-foot South Park branch originally opened in September 2006, thanks to the 1998 voter-approved “Libraries for All” bond measure that renewed and revitalized libraries across the city. It is the first Library building in the South Park community.

Interior improvements are made based on branch usage and trends in Library services. The changes are part of Turner’s vision for the Library to “re-imagine” its spaces and find innovative, creative solutions to meet the public’s changing needs and interests.

The approximately $424,000 budget included funds from the 2012 voter-approved Library levy, the real estate excise tax, and The Seattle Public Library Foundation.

More information
The Library gives everyone the opportunity to learn and excel and promised to protect the public’s investment in its buildings as part of the levy. The South Park Branch improvements are part of the Library’s commitment to keeping its buildings well-maintained, clean and comfortable for patrons.

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Aug 3 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society

Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Aug 4 all-day

(Note: Beach Naturalist events occur between 10 am and 4 pm. Each day /event time varies with the tide and lasts about 2 hours. Low tide usually falls in the middle of the hours listed.)

Join trained volunteers from Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program for a free guided exploration at very low tide (note the dates and specific times for each day below) No reservations necessary.

Dress for the windy weather and wear shoes that can get wet and handle very slippery surfaces. This program designed for adults and 3 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Find events at Lincoln Park (beach) and South Alki/Constellation Park.

Sep 7 @ 10:00 am

Bystander Intervention Workshop @ Admiral Congregational Church
Sep 15 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Anti-Hate Alaska Junction works to reduce hate in our neighborhood by providing Bystander Intervention Workshops.

Visit our website at www.antihatealaskajunction.wordpress.com for information about hate in Seattle and in the US.

In this session, the bystander intervention workshop leader reviews brain science–including the reality of emotional responses, their effect on brain chemistry, and the resulting triggering of our fight/flight/freeze survival responses.

Participants apply new knowledge and practice new skills by running scenarios of hate-based interactions with the goals of de-escalating the situations and supporting the target. Working as an aggressor, a target, or an intervening bystander, participants learn by doing, not by listening.

The next workshop is Sunday, September 15, 2019, from 2 to 4 pm at Admiral Congregational Church, 4320 SW Hill Street, Seattle. There will also be an opportunity to have an extra practice session on Sunday, October 6.

The workshop is FREE, but donations are accepted.  To register, email antihate3@gmail.com or just walk in.

Free community dinner @ High Point Community Center
Apr 19 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Free dinner every Sunday night in West Seattle!

Everyone is welcome at High Point Community Dinner!

We gather, along with our volunteers, every Sunday night to eat dinner together and hear a story about Jesus. With an informal setting that centers around the meal and conversation, everyone is welcome to come just for the meal, or to stay longer to hear the talk and have a chance to discuss with friends.

The dinner is complemented by art and music! We often have an artist doing live paintings, a kids’ art table, and live music.
