Warren Pope: Red Lines, Blood Lines @ Vashon Center for the Arts
Feb 20 all-day

Warren Pope: Red Lines, Blood Lines

Art Exhibition at Vashon Center for the Arts (Vashon, WA) February 7 – 29, 2020
Meet the Artist & Opening Reception: Friday, February 7, 2020 – 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Pope’s art explores matters of systemic inequities. This show is an abstract art exhibition that examines the historical and contemporary realities of redlining (refusing to loan money to people in areas with populations of color), displacement and American slavery trade. He also shows art inspired and in homage to his ancestors in Africa. With a minimalist style, Pope combines three dimensional art with basic visual elements such as lines, shapes, and color to explore redlining history.

With an international influence, a socially conscious mentality, a firm view for cultural equity and a dash of forwardness, Warren Pope has crafted an established visual art career inside and outside of the Pacific Northwest. Born in Munich, Germany of a Czech Mother and an African American Father, Warren and his two brothers were often ridiculed and beloved by their communities for their art and outward connection to social equality and justice. Like many military children, Warren was exposed to cultural difference, social customs and awkward experiences of acceptances and domestic indifference. Popes father, John Pope, served in the military and for a time was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington.

Popes artistic interest was first influenced by his Mother Ann Pope, when she fashioned his fascination for art while his father’s family and cultural heritage educated him on his American and African ancestry. Traveling between Harlem New York, North Carolina, Tacoma Washington, Kansas and Germany, Pope was able to absorb the vast difference between his social and ethnic experiences.

Instead of bedtime stories, Popes mother would draw illustrations with wild imaginative plots that began the foundation of his creative conceptual and artistic thinking. For Pope, this formed a formidable ability to compose his art into direct visual narratives utilizing a minimalist style of directness for various complex cultural commentaries.

Warren Pope is an alum of the Univ. of Puget Sound, and has lived in Seattle for over 30 years. His career has involved twenty years of graphic art dealership associated with the Mack Gallery and environmental design landscaping. His personal art has been privileged to be shown and supported by two major galleries in the Pacific Northwest, one being the American Art Company and the other being Gallery Mack. His show “Blood Lines, Time Lines, Red Lines” opened at the Northwest African American Museum to rave reviews, and extended an extra month due to popular demand.

We use the knowledge that has been gained over the years and the metaphysical and spiritual principles we have learned through Science of Mind and ministerial teachings in our Sunday talks, as well as in workshops and spiritual coaching. As Science of Mind practitioners, we bring a new perspective of God to those who feel there is a face of God that may be different from that which they have grown up with. This “face” is a gentler Spirit, a more loving Spirit, a Spirit that celebrates life in general and us in particular. We thoroughly enjoy helping people know themselves more deeply and most of all developing their own relationship with this great Spirit. We agree with Ernest Holmes when he said: “There is a power for good in the Universe and you can use it.” As a Science of Mind minister, this is our hearts work and advocation…to use that Power to make create good for ourselves and the world we live in. All are welcome! Come to our Sunday Celebration and experience our warm, open community for yourself. We are a Religious Science of Mind church and a member of the Centers for Spiritual Living. To learn more about our global organization, click here: http:/csl.org. We meet every Sunday from 10:00 to 12:00 AM at 9626 14th Ave SW (West Seattle cross street Roxbury St). You can contact us via email at: NLSCSEATTLE@gmail.com”

Warren Pope: Red Lines, Blood Lines @ Vashon Center for the Arts
Feb 25 all-day

Warren Pope: Red Lines, Blood Lines @ Vashon Center for the Arts
Feb 27 all-day

Northern Lights Spiritual Center (9626 14th SW) – “At Northern Lights Spiritual Center, we use the practical and spiritual principles to help create lives we love living. Classic Novels/Movies Book Club @ Paper Boat Booksellers
Mar 1 @ 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Classic Novels (and Movies) book club at Paper Boat Booksellers: join us to read the classics!

Our first book will be Jane Austen’s Emma-it’s a long one, but full of subtle humor and wit!

This club will meet to read classic works of fiction from any era and country, beginning with nineteenth-century England. We will discuss them as literary works and as the basis for recent film adaptations as available. If there are no movies released in the near future, we will simply choose another great novel to read, as a group.

To begin, we will read Jane Austen’s Emma, which has inspired a film version Emma (dir. Autumn de Wilde; scheduled for release in late February 2020).

Discussion leader: West Seattle native Julia Douthwaite Viglione lived in Indiana for many years as professor of French literature at Notre Dame and is delighted to be back home! She proposes this club as a fun and intellectually stimulating way to enjoy reading psychologically deep, complex works of fiction with other people. With the release of new films inspired by classics, it’s especially intriguing to read the “real thing” and observe the changes made…
