Jul 16 all-day

(Note: Beach Naturalist events occur between 10 am and 4 pm. Each day /event time varies with the tide and lasts about 2 hours. Low tide usually falls in the middle of the hours listed.)

Join trained volunteers from Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program for a free guided exploration at very low tide (note the dates and specific times for each day below) No reservations necessary.

Dress for the windy weather and wear shoes that can get wet and handle very slippery surfaces. This program designed for adults and 3 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Find events at Lincoln Park (beach) and South Alki/Constellation Park.

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

Pocketful Of Poems @ Southwest Library
Jul 19 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

At the Southwest Library Branch: Create poems, haikus and artwork with award-wining author/illustrator Javaka Steptoe!

In this lively presentation, Javaka Steptoe will talk about poems and specifically what is a haiku and discuss the science behind the poems in the book A Pocketful of Poems. What are seasons? What happens in spring? How are butterflies created? And we’ll discuss the nature that is in each of the various poems while creating caterpillars and butterflies out of craft supplies. For ages 4-8.

Javaka Steptoe won the 2017 Caldecott Medal for his picture book biography Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Little, Brown). The book won many other honors, too, including the 2017 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, and multiple starred reviews. His debut picture book, In Daddy’s Arms I Am Tall: African Americans Celebrating Fathers (Lee & Low Books, ), earned him a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, in addition to a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Literature Work at the 1998 NAACP Image Awards. Since that time, Steptoe has illustrated and/or written more than a dozen books for youth readers, collaborating with some of the top names in the business—Walter Dean Myers, Nikki Grimes and Karen English. Javaka Steptoe travels extensively reading and conducting workshops at schools, libraries, museums, and conferences across the country and internationally.

This program is part of this year’s Summer of Learning program Explore Your World!, which encourages reading and activities around science, technology, technology, arts and math. Local bands provide the soundtrack and salty breezes provide the atmosphere as you browse the diverse artist’s displays. (Rain or shine — though our track record is almost 100% for shine.)

The Last World Octopus Wrestling Champion

Book, music and lyrics by Justin Huertas
Gregory Award-winning playwright of LIZARD BOY

Senior year (and falling in love) is hard enough, but when the discovery of her mother’s old trophy throws open the locked doors of the past, a young girl must reckon with a world turned upside down – and the arrival of strange new abilities that seem to hint at a destiny beyond her wildest imaginations. Taking rich threads of Puget Sound history and folklore, musical mastermind Justin Huertas weaves a thrilling modern myth of love, family, and transformation.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:30 pm
Sundays at 3 pm

“Justin Huertas is one of those people who seemingly can do everything.”
– KUOW

“[Huertas’s] songs liven up the action…His talent for choruses and his humor shine.”
– The Stranger

Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Aug 4 all-day
