THURSDAY, JULY 11TH: WORDS, WRITERS, SOUTHWEST STORIES PRESENTS:
Shin Yu Pai
Ten Thousand Things: Artifacts of Asian American LifeIn many Chinese sayings, “ten thousand” is used in a poetic sense to convey something infinite, vast, and unfathomable. In a sense, the story of Asians in America is just that. In her NPR podcast Ten Thousand Things, Shin Yu Pai explores a collection of objects and artifacts that reveal personal and cultural values, stories of diaspora, and tales of trauma that illuminate the Asian American experience.
In this talk enriched by audio clips, Pai shares intimate stories from Asian American communities drawn from two seasons of her chart-topping podcast. From a second-hand novel to a blue suit worn by a congressman on January 6, Shin Yu Pai will discuss Asian American histories, the complexity of Asian American identities and where they fit or don’t fit within larger conversations on race, and what the Asian American experience was like during pandemic.
Shin Yu Pai (she/her) is the creator and host of Ten Thousand Things, a podcast of Asian American stories produced for KUOW. A published poet and author of 13 books, she currently serves as Seattle’s Civic Poet through 2024. Her work has appeared in publications such as the New York Times and Atlas Obscura. She holds an MA degree in Museology from the University of Washington and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Pai lives in Seattle.
This event will be held virtually, via Zoom on July 11, 2024, at 6 pm. A link to join this event will be emailed to registered participants on the day of the event.

Since 1989 GreenStage has brought free Shakespeare in the park to Seattle area audiences. Our mission is to foster an appreciation for live theater by eliminating geographical and financial barriers that impede access to the arts. Our shows tour to over 20 parks, large and small in and around Seattle. Attending is easy – just show up, grab a spot on the grass and enjoy. No tickets or reservations are required. Our shows are focused on the text, story, and character relationships in Shakespeare’s plays, with a goal of making the plays fun and easy to understand. Come join us in the parks this summer for our 36th Anniversary season!
Backyard Bard was born out of a desire to bring Shakespeare to smaller parks and new audiences in underserved neighborhoods. But we don’t just perform in the parks – Backyard Bard is also available for private parties. If you are interested in hosting a performance, contact us at greenstage@greenstage.org.

West Seattle Little STP Bike Ride
Sunday, July 14, 2024 – 9:15 am to 1:00 pmMeet at Hamilton Viewpoint Park
1318 Palm Ave SWContact: Cathy, Ride Leader
Email: cathyd@tutanota.comHave you ever wanted to do the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride? And forgot to sign up? Or train for it? Here is your big chance! Do it in 2 hours and end up at a huge finish line party! Same weekend as Cascade’s big STP, so you can brag and post pix like the other one-day riders.
Join West Seattle Bike Connections for a ride starting at Hamilton Viewpoint Park in West Seattle on a 10.2-mile route at a leisurely 10-12 mph pace! Register at the start. We invite and welcome everyone including people of all ages, languages, ethnicities, genders, races, and abilities. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by parent or guardian.
We will be riding from SW Seattle Street to SW Portland Street, and back north to Summer Fest at the West Seattle Junction, for a fabulous finish line party. After some time at the festival, participants can ride home independently, or ride with a leader back to Hamilton Viewpoint.
Our goal will be to stay together as a group. Be prepared for a moderately hilly route. There are a couple of hills that some may wish to walk up. That’s fine. We will regroup at the top of hills.
Restrooms are not available at the start. Closest public restrooms are at Seacrest Marina Park (the water taxi dock) on Harbor Ave. We will stop along the way for restrooms/water at mile 2.7 at the Alaska Junction.
Check brakes and tires before leaving home. Arrive in time for 9:15 ride description and safety briefing. Must be present at safety briefing to participate. Helmets required. No ear buds. Steady rain cancels. We will ride if there are just light showers.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish will be dedicating its new rock garden on 35th Avenue SW this coming Sunday, July 14, 2024 after the 11:00 a.m. mass. This project began a year ago when the OLG Life, Justice and Peace Commission wanted to ensure that everyone felt welcome at the parish. Parishioners were asked to write down in one to four words – any words – that they wish to identify themselves with. These identification words were gathered together and painted onto rocks by both parishioners and school students throughout the year. This Sunday, we will place these painted rocks into a special area in front of our parish. We are a diverse community, and each stone in this garden is a reflection of who sits in our pews, who attends our school, and who you can consider your neighbor here at OLG. All are welcome. There will also be coffee and donuts available for everyone following the rock garden dedication.

F3, a free national men’s workout group:
We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.
The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.
I am an elementary teacher and I live in the Arbor Heights neighborhood. (This is a) recurring event that I am hosting this summer for kids at the Seola Pond on SW 106th.
