Summer of Learning Teaching Artist, Ty Juvinel is a Tulalip Tribal member, artist and carver.

Coast Salish Design a closer look: an introduction to the Coast Salish style of art, reviewing shapes and how they should be used in theory to create positive and negative designs, depicted as Salish art.

Age range: 8 years and up
Items needed: none. This is not a hands-on or participatory but you can use pencil, paper, or crayons, to draw and create your designs.

Salish Style Bookmarks: If you had the chance to watch Coast Salish Design a closer look, then we will put some ideas to paper, using shapes to create an eagle and salmon bookmarks. Once done designing you will see how to color and understand positive and negative shapes.

Age range: 8 years and up
Items needed: cardstock or paper; scissors; pencil and eraser; colored pencils/pens, crayons or paint

Salish Style Salmon Soap Carving: learn how to carve a salmon figure with minimal tools needed, as well as understanding coast Salish Design elements.

Age range: 8 years and up
Items needed: bar of soap, spoon, optional butter knife

This program is part of this year’s Summer of Learning program Every Day is Earth Day!, which encourages reading and activities around science, technology, engineering, arts and math. This year Summer of Learning is a little different, but we still have plenty of activities to keep kids engaged, reading and learning all summer!
