Kenyon Hall‘s announcement:

Pianomania!, our signature celebration of all things pianistic, returns next weekend, April 20-22. Shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30, and Saturday at 3:00.

The celebration stars New York cabaret artist Peter Mintun, Gospel luminary Pastor Patrinell Wright, and yours truly. Connie Corrick, who was originally slated to join us, will instead be in Minnesota to celebrate the life of her father, who passed away this week. I’m sure you join me in wishing her and her family our sympathy.

I’ve known Peter Mintun for over thirty years, and I’m still amazed at his unique ability to fly over the keys with style and grace. And I’m not alone in my admiration. During his years-long stint at L’Etoile in San Francisco, visiting musical celebrities from Mary Martin to Liberace made a point of stopping by to hear his spectacular renditions of piano classics. And I’ll never forget watching with pride at a San Francisco party as Peter played for an approving Leonard Bernstein.

Peter now appears regularly at Feinstein’s at the Regency in New York. If you’d like to hear a bit of his keyboard pyrotechnics, listen to the Carioca, from Flying Down to Rio, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuxS-vac0Zg. If you watch to the end, you’ll see his reaction to having got it right! Peter’s period piano music may also be heard on the soundtrack to HBO’s acclaimed series, Boardwalk Empire.

Though Pat Wright is revered internationally for her work as founder/director of the Total Experience Gospel Choir, that only speaks to one aspect of her abilities. In our show next weekend, you’ll get to hear her amazing solo voice, and the part of her that rarely gets a public airing – her piano playing. It’s deeply rooted in the African-American church of the South, specifically Walnut Grove Baptist Church, in the bucolic enclave near Carthage, Texas where she was reared.

For the occasion I’m bringing my Kawai grand from home to partner with the hall’s Chickering in what promises to be a tribute to all eighty-eight keys, and then some! Please join us.

Reserved table seats are $14. Row seating is $12 general and $10 seniors. With a reservation, row seating is only $10 general and $8 seniors. Elementary, middle, & high school students are $5. Pre-school children are free, and Root Beer Floats are still only a buck.
