CenturyLink Awards $10,000 to Pathfinder K8 in West Seattle for Technology Innovation

The CenturyLink Teachers & Technology Grant Program is unique in that educators have
an open-ended opportunity to design a learning project that will strengthen
curricula and integrate technology. CenturyLink has funded the program since 2007,
and over the past five years, the program has given away $450,000 for
classroom-based technology benefiting more than 6,550 students. This year, only
nine awards across the Washington were selected, and within Seattle, only Pathfinder
K8, was selected for their project. The Pathfinder K8, in West Seattle, is planning
on leveraging the grant for semester-long mapping expedition for over 100 second and
third graders, leveraging “Where in the world is…” helping them connect beyond
community and into the classroom.

“With the budget constraints our schools are dealing with, this program has proven
over the years to be beneficial for teachers and students,” said Sue Anderson, vice
president and general manager for CenturyLink. “These grants allow students to
participate in their learning in a hands-on manner, using creativity and technology
to interact with their education and each other.”

The CenturyLink/OSPI Teachers & Technology Grant Program cultivates a growing and
sophisticated group of K-12 tech integrators. After five years, the suite of
learning projects represents a rich collection of exemplars of technology-enriched
instruction. Many projects are classroom bound but a high number of these creative
learning experiences take students out to the field-industry and nature. Many of the
projects involve student peers and a significant number interface with industry
professionals, families and the community. To date, 92 teachers and
teacher-librarians have been able to deepen their ability to engage and motivate
young learners with technology.
