Providence Mount St. Vincent on April 27, 2017, will hold a celebratory mass in honor of Mother Joseph Day.
The mass begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Pigott Chapel (3rd floor) at Providence Mount St. Vincent, 4831 35th Ave SW, Seattle. The public is invited to attend. Father Matthew Oakland of Holy Rosary Parish in West Seattle will preside.
In honor of Mother Joseph’s history of love, selflessness and charity, Providence Mount St. Vincent, lovingly known as “The Mount,” is collecting children’s books written in different languages to donate to Neighborhood House.
Also, with more than 50 percent of The Mount’s staff coming from different countries, three staff members have been invited to speak at the mass to reflect on what love means in their cultures, in their families and how that is translated to their work at The Mount.
Mother Joseph Of The Sacred Heart (Esther Pariseau), 1823-1902, spent her life seeing that the poor were cared for, the homeless sheltered, the sick tended, the hungry fed. In 1856, 13 years after she entered the Sisters of Providence, Mother Joseph and four companions traveled 6,000 miles from Montreal to the distant Washington Territory. In 1859 she established a corporation that has developed into what is now Providence Health & Services, committed to improving health through hospitals, physician clinics, senior services, supportive housing, and many other health and educational services across Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and Washington. She devoted her life to the young, sick and poor until her death in Vancouver in 1902.
