West Seattle, Washington
29 Friday
One more high-school-sports shoutout this weekend (in addition to Friday coverage of cross-country and football): We talked with a local coach who is looking back at how he began, as he celebrates his 200th win!
That’s Jeff Norton, longtime Seattle Lutheran High School girls’ soccer coach (and former principal, and current science teacher). He got his 200th win this past Monday when the Lady Saints beat Tacoma Baptist at Fort Steilacoom, 2-1. His team is 5-1-1 in their league so far this year and placed third in the state the last two years. He played college soccer at Concordia University in Portland; coaching SLHS was his first post-college job. He also coached the SLHS boys’ team that won the state championship in 1991.
All three local high-school varsity-football teams lost tonight. At Southwest Athletic Complex in Westwood, the final score was Rainier Beach 31, West Seattle High School 8. WSHS’s lone touchdown came from sophomore DiAndre Johnson, who ran the ball 21 yards for the score:
At Memorial Stadium downtown a few hours earlier, it was Franklin 38, Chief Sealth International High School 0. And Seattle Lutheran High School was on the road in Skagit County, where they lost to La Conner, 21-9.
Just in from Greg Whittaker at Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor):

Just received results of Thursday’s multi-school Lincoln Park high-school cross-country meet from Jason Glover, cross-country coach at Chief Sealth International High School:
Here are the results from the metro 3A cross country meet held @ Lincoln Park 10/7.
In the boys’ race, CSIHS had 4 runners in the top 10, led by senior Daniel Perrine in second place with a personal best of 17:49. WSHS had 3 boys in the top 10, led by M. Wicklam with a time of 19:39.
Out of five teams, CSIHS won with a score of 39 points, while WSHS was second with a score of 47 points.
In the girls’ race, CS freshman Kenaia Neumann won with time of 22:57, followed closely by WSHS’s N. Broten @ 23:16.
Chief Sealth won the girls’ team race with a score of 27 points.
Chief Sealth, West Seattle, Ingraham, Cleveland, and Franklin were the teams involved.
Thanks to Fairmount Community Association‘s Sharonn Meeks for spotting and sharing this news: The Seattle Parks webpage for the West Seattle Golf Course driving-range project now has a date for the next public meeting – October 27th. At the first meeting Aug. 5 (WSB coverage here), there was some concern about the potential site; at the second meeting Sept. 15 (WSB coverage here), a slightly different site was proposed, but its potential effects on the existing golf course drew concern. To see what the project team’s come up with now, be at the golf course’s clubhouse at 7 pm Wednesday 10/27.
Thanks to LyndaB for the tip – we just found a webpage with details: Goalkeeper Kasey Keller from Sounders FC will sign autographs (and promote a beverage) at the Junction QFC (42nd/Alaska) this afternoon, 4-6 pm.
The third of this weekend’s three games involving local schools is in the books: Concrete 47, Seattle Lutheran 6, tonight at West Seattle Stadium. A few more details, plus a highlight, ahead:Read More
2 more high-school-football notes in addition to our coverage of last night’s West Seattle High School homecoming victory: Also last night, Chief Sealth International High School played a nonconference game at Eastside Catholic, losing 56-6; Seattle Lutheran High School plays tonight at West Seattle Stadium, hosting Concrete, 7 pm.
Just in from Southwest Athletic Complex – West Seattle High School‘s first varsity-football win of the year, and it was homecoming too – 29-6 over Cleveland. More after the jump:Read More

The West Seattle Thunder softball team has room for 10-year-olds – here’s the pitch:
The West Seattle Thunder 10U Girls Fastpitch Club is looking for experienced players to fill their roster. The Thunder, under the tutelage of local volunteer parent coaches, will plan to compete in girls 10-year-old-and-under Fastpitch Tournaments in the late Spring and Summer of 2011. We plan to hold indoor practices throughout the winter, primarily in the West Seattle High School gym. Parents of girls born on or after January 1, 2000, and are looking for a more-challenging softball environment, are encouraged to contact Timber Hirano for more info at: Timberhi@hotmail.com or 206-938-4839.
Great day to get your car washed – and to help out the West Seattle High School volleyball team, which is having a fundraiser at West Seattle Produce (on Fauntleroy south of Alaska) – go shop, and get your car scrubbed. They’re scheduled to be there till 3 pm.
Tonight’s three scores are all in, and in each one, somebody got blanked: According to the scoreboard at the Seattle Times, it was Seattle Lutheran 44, Darrington 0. Meantime, we were at the WSHS-Franklin game (covered in progress via Twitter), final score Franklin 56, WSHS 0. And we’ve just received the Chief Sealth IHS score from Sealth, which lost to Rainier Beach 48-0.
(WSB photo from WSHS practice on Thursday)
All three of West Seattle’s high-school football teams lost last week – but none as visibly as West Seattle High School, which forfeited to O’Dea High School while down 48-0 at halftime, in pounding rain at West Seattle Stadium. We talked on Thursday with Coach Davis Lura, who says the team’s challenges include the fact they are going into tonight’s game against Franklin High School (7 pm, SWAC) with about 20 players dealing with some sort of injury: “(The number is) up, it’s down, it changes every day,” he told us, saying that’s been the situation since the season began with a non-conference match against Eisenhower HS (from Yakima). The emotional health of the team is good, though, according to Coach Lura, who says practice has been going well – he says no clear leader has emerged but about half a dozen of the players are sharing leadership roles, with spirits remaining high. The coach says Franklin has its best team in 10 years; last week, they beat Nathan Hale. And his players are aware they’re going in with a very limited squad – but they’re looking ahead to more players being able to come back in the weeks ahead, from academic probation as well as injuries, looking to the big Chief Sealth and Rainier Beach games later this fall.
Going into their big game at Hiawatha Playfield this afternoon, the girls’ soccer teams from both West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School were undefeated in conference play. Only one would be able to keep that distinction once the game was over – and that’s West Seattle High School, whose team beat Sealth 2-0. Here are the topline stats from our partners at the Seattle Times.
8:14 PM: Two of tonight’s three games involving local teams are over: At West Seattle Stadium, in the ongoing downpour, WSHS has just forfeited to O’Dea, with the game ending at halftime, 48-0. (We will be adding more to the story regarding what the coaching staff explained were the reasons for this – which included injured players and field conditions in pounding rain.)
(Video of Sealth’s lone touchdown, by Trey Brown, added early Saturday)
At Memorial Stadium downtown earlier, Chief Sealth International High School lost to Cleveland HS, 14-6. Seattle Lutheran is playing tonight in Tenino – no report yet.
1:08 AM: The score from Tenino was Northwest Christian (Lacey) 28, Seattle Lutheran 8. (Stats here.)
(Click to see tonight’s new rendering in full: Top is west; the lighter area in the upper right is the previously suggested driving-range area; the area with dots around it is the newly proposed area)
By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor
The design team for the West Seattle Golf Course‘s future driving range unveiled a proposal at tonight’s second public meeting that differs dramatically from what was roughed out for the first meeting – with architect Todd Schroeder calling it “a driving range that fits in the area where we can actually build it.”
That refers to what the team (bios here) explained were daunting challenges to the originally proposed site (see upper right of top rendering), close to the slope that runs down alongside West Seattle Rotary Viewpoint Park and parallels 35th SW. Among those challenges: It would have required a $1 million retaining wall (taken out of the $2.5 million construction budget for the $3.4 million project), as well as blocking the park view with tall netting, and other cons (such as removing trees, and hauling away more than 3,000 loads of soil during an excavation process). Those challenges led the team, overseen by the Parks Department‘s Garrett Farrell, to focus on a different section of the golf course site – one not requiring “digging into a nasty, gooey hillside,” as Farrell put it. (With the possibility, consultant Bob Thorpe said, of maybe even “blowing out” 35th SW.)
The area that’s now under consideration for the driving range is further east, not level but not on the slope, and would have driving-range users facing south-southeast into the golf course site from a starting point close to the existing clubhouse and parking lot. (See the full rendering here.)
But the newly proposed design drew sharp criticism from golfers (who, along with site neighbors, were present in much bigger numbers than the first meeting) – because it would mean big changes for the existing first and ninth holes on the golf course (the previous driving-range proposal would not have affected the course itself at all). One declared it a “no-go”; another vowed “revolt” if the course changes went through.
One meeting tonight that we didn’t have on the calendar yet – and the group itself just got big news – the West Seattle Snowsports Council. Greg Whittaker from Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor and site of tonight’s meeting) says:
We have just got confirmation that the West Seattle Snowsports Council and 4H will be working toward a partnership this winter! … We are excited to see the process moving along, and will be holding a
meeting tonight at Mountain to Sound Outfitters to discuss:Halloween Ski Swap Volunteers and Logistics
Youth development
IT support, such as web development and registration systems
Location- which mountains
BudgetingThis is a great step forward for West Seattle Snowriders!
The meeting’s at 6 tonight at M2SO, which is at 3602 SW Alaska in The Triangle.

Thanks to Roxhill Elementary School parent Lisa for letting us know about a big event that Roxhill fourth- and fifth-graders enjoyed downtown on Monday – a trip to KeyArena for a special clinic sponsored by the Seattle Storm and the WNBA during an off-day in the Storm’s playoff push. In the photo used with permission of our partners at the Seattle Times, the Storm’s Swin Cash cheers on Roxhill fourth-grader Abigail Salas. (We found more photos in this online gallery from another site.) As you probably know, the Storm play Atlanta again tonight at the Key as their best-of-five series continues; Seattle won 79-77 on Sunday.
10:40 PM NOTE: In case you hadn’t heard, they won! 87=84. Game 3 of the WNBA Finals is Thursday in Atlanta.
Even if you don’t golf, you might consider coming to tomorrow night’s second meeting about the design of the driving range that’s in the works for the West Seattle Golf Course. The design team is scheduled to unveil its proposal for where they believe the driving range would “best fit” – and that was a subject of some discussion at, and after, the first meeting (WSB coverage here; city notes here), since some placements of the range on the west side of the course could lead to a tall net between West Seattle Rotary Viewpoint Park – where the stolen-then-returned-and-refurbished totem pole was rededicated a month ago – and its vaunted cityscape view. While you can certainly comment by e-mail, postal mail or phone, nothing beats being there to see/hear it explained, and to talk directly to the project team. The meeting’s at 7 pm tomorrow (Wednesday) in the golf course’s clubhouse, 4470 35th SW (the clubhouse is on the south side of the parking lot).
Greg Whittaker of Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor) and Alki Kayak Tours shares two bits of news: First, tonight is the final Tuesday Night Stand-Up Paddleboard Demo Night – try a paddleboard for free, and/or race at 7 pm – it’s the last race of the season in the Northwest, Greg says. He adds, “West Seattle finished strong in the second annual Round the Rock event on Sunday at Seward Park. Local paddleboarder Tyler Hesse won his division for the 13-mile race around Mercer Island.” And Greg says he won his division in the 2.5-mile race, as did Kathy Kingen: “All and all, it is a strong showing for West Seattle for a new sport.” (Full results here.) Tonight’s paddleboarding event starts at AKT’s Seacrest HQ.
9:37 PM: Just in from West Seattle Stadium: North Beach High School 7, Seattle Lutheran High School 6. Visuals and details to come.
ADDED 11:21 PM: Game notes – Despite driving down the field and spending the last minute of the game inside the 10=yard-line, Seattle Lutheran was unable to score. North Beach’s lone score came after an 85-yard runback of the opening kickoff. Both teams made significant progress down the field at one time or another, but neither were able to move the ball the last 10 or so yards to score. The Saints seemed to have the game under control for the last few minutes, but a busted pass play with only 31 seconds to go turned the ball over to North Beach, which then only had to take a knee to end the game. On the night, the Saints had 285 total offensive yards – 198 on the ground and 87 passing. Their sole touchdown came early in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Kevin Moseley.
The two-point conversion failed. SLHS plays at Tenino next Friday night, 7 pm. The Saints, by the way, are displaying #1 this season as a tribute to Sam Backman, the former SLHS football player killed in a car crash three months ago. His family was at tonight’s game.

Soccer is higher-profile than ever – thanks to the stars (and the vuvuzelas!) of the FIFA World Cup earlier this year! – as the West Seattle Soccer Club starts its 2010 fall season today. Tim McMonigle says some teams start today, and everybody will be in action by next weekend:
Players aged 5-18 will be playing at Roxhill North and South, Highland Park, Fairmount Park, EC Hughes, Riverview Playfield, Hiawatha, Sealth and Denny fields (today) and Sunday and for the rest of the season. The season lasts until Thanksgiving for most of our teams, and until early December for the rest. Come and cheer them on!
According to the West Seattle Soccer Club website, the fall season includes about 1600 players and 275 coaches!
(2nd Sealth touchdown, #24 Devante Meullion, so soon after the start of the 4th quarter we’d barely hit “record” – he scored the Seahawks’ 1st TD too)
9:27 PM: Two varsity football games tonight involving local high schools, and the first final is in: Chief Sealth International High School beat Ingraham HS at home, 12-6. Sealth had made it 12-0 by scoring its second TD just a few seconds into the 4th quarter (video added above); Ingraham scored its only TD with about 7:33 left in that same quarter, and that was the final scoring of the game. (Sealth beat Ingraham last September too.) West Seattle High School is still playing at Nathan Hale (we’re tweeting at @wsblive).
9:51 PM UPDATE: Final score just in from the WSHS game – Hale 56, West Seattle 26. (added 11:30 pm) The Wildcats’ final TD, with seconds left in the game:
That’s Isaiah Johnson, who scored three TD’s for WSHS – the other one happened in a memorable moment in the second quarter, when Isaac Johnson squibbed a punt that went straight up and came straight back down; when the ball hit the ground it bounced backward until it was behind the original line of scrimmage. At that point, it was ruled “live,” and Isaac picked it up and ran for a score.
NEXT: Sealth vs. Cleveland at Memorial Stadium downtown next Friday, 5 pm. WSHS vs. O’Dea at West Seattle Stadium next Friday, 7 pm.
ONE MORE NOTE: The pregame rally and barbecue at Chief Sealth included a 50-year reunion – the Class of 1960!
