Right in the middle of homecoming/spirit week, a big nighttime event at Chief Sealth International High School – with three sports teams teaming up to raise money for the athletics program. In our top photo, that’s Sealth athletic director Sam Reed with members of the volleyball team, one of the three – also front and center in the effort, boys’ basketball:

Football players, here with volleyball-team friends, too:

But the teams couldn’t do it alone. Friends and families joined them at Wednesday night’s spaghetti dinner:

From a platform above the crowd, Principal John Boyd opened up the bidding for a silent auction:

Items listed included a Mariner-autographed baseball and a “Two-Hour Work-Crew Party” donated by six Sealth basketball players and their coach. Another unique fundraising element, the dessert dash, won by (making the highest donation) table 19:

For their $300 total, they got first pick at the dessert table — choosing a pumpkin pie. P.S. You can find Sealth teams’ schedules here.

Tomorrow (Thursday) is tipoff day for West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) youth basketball signups for ages 4-11. Just got the reminder from sports director Matt Schlede, who says you can sign up by clicking “youth basketball” on this webpage listing Y activities – that’ll show you all the options. It’s basically a 7-game schedule with one practice during the week and one game on the weekend; practices start after Thanksgiving, and the first games are the weekend of December 11th. (You can also register in person at the West Seattle YMCA or Fauntleroy YMCA.)

Got plans for dinner this Wednesday? Here’s a chance to dine at the newly renovated Chief Sealth International High School while helping its athletics program:

This Wednesday, October 13th, the Football, Boys’ Basketball, and Volleyball programs at Sealth will host a dinner benefit to support these programs. It will be a spaghetti dinner event with short presentations from each sport. The dinner will begin at 7:00 pm; tickets are $12, with the proceeds going toward the Football, Boys Basketball and Volleyball programs, and Sealth Athletics. Purchasing a dinner ticket will also give you free admission to the first Sealth home basketball game in the new gym when the Boys’ Basketball team takes on Brisbane, Australia, on November 30th, 2010 at 7:00pm. You can purchase dinner tickets at the door this Wednesday night starting at 6:30 pm. The event will be held in the brand new Galleria at Chief Sealth.

If you haven’t been there yet (or lately) – 2600 SW Thistle (map). P.S. It’s homecoming week at Chief Sealth (the football game is this Friday night across the street at Southwest Athletic Complex, 7 pm, vs. Nathan Hale).

West Seattle Little League needs you to go to bat for Snack Shack

Another construction project is under way in West Seattle right now, in addition to the various commercial and park projects we’ve been updating – but you might not have heard much about it unless you are affiliated with West Seattle Little League or a frequent visitor to Bar-S Playfield on Alki Point. New construction and storage buildings are about to go up at the field, according to WSLL president Mark Terao, who e-mailed to share news of a new website that’s tracking the project, as it gets under way in a big way (at left, that’s WSLL Board Member/Majors Manager Mark O’Neil, photographed during work about a week ago to clear out the old snack shack before it’s taken down):

The site has been prepared for the build. The old container has been relocated to make space for the new storage building. Everything has been cleared out of the old snack shack and our contractor has shot the grade and staked the location of the new buildings. We will be removing the old shack this week and pouring the foundation. … We are shooting for a completion date of January 15th 2011. Currently the project is estimated to cost $150,000. To date, we are still in need of roughly $30,000 to complete the project. Through the generous support of local businesses and residents, this number is shrinking, but it is still a big nut and we are still asking the community for help.

Mark says, “For a minimum donation of $100 you can have your family’s (or) business/organization’s name placed on the permanent “Thank You” plaque that will be affixed to the building.” You can find a donation form on the West Seattle Little League’s main website here. Meantime, Mark says they will continue to update progress, with photos and info, on the project website.

Sounders FC’s biggest little fan: Medal for West Seattle boy

That’s Jett, a Gatewood Elementary School student you might have seen in this story on the Seattle Times (WSB sponsor) website. The medal he’s holding is the one he got from Sounders FC forward Nate Jaqua after the Seattle club won the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night – explained at the start of an earlier Times story. Jett’s mom Stephanie e-mailed tonight with more on the story and how Jett’s handling his prize:

When he is not carrying it around, it is hanging from the wall with a picture of Nate Jaqua next to it. He was so excited. The kids were standing there getting autographs and my daughter was holding a replica trophy that we made. He asked Nate for his medal and I said, laughing, no, Jett, you can’t have his medal, he just earned that. But then he finished his autographs and took it off his neck and handed it to Jett. Jett just keeps saying, I can’t believe it. Nate Jaqua is such a good guy to do that. I brought the replica trophy and real medal to Gatewood the next day for Jett to show his 1st-grade class and Jordan to show her 3rd-grade class. I am so happy for him.

Here’s Jett’s sister Jordan with the aforementioned replica trophy:

They are quite the sports fans – we thought we recalled a photo here sometime back, involving a different team, and indeed, here’s one from the WSB archives, almost 3 years ago!

West Seattle man’s coast-to-coast record attempt starts today

In the final few days of last year, we brought you the story of 34-year-old West Seattleite John Wallace III‘s then-latest milestone: Running at least a mile a day, every day, for 20 years. One of his other achievements included running across the USA in 2004, and reporter Keri DeTore noted in the story that Wallace planned to do it again, hoping to set a world record this time, starting October 10, 2010. That day is here – and Wallace’s plan is on, all out. He’s scheduled to leave Los Angeles City Hall this morning, to start a 2,900-mile route to New York City Hall:

If Wallace keeps the pace of 64.5 miles a day, he can break the old across-the-US record of 46 days, and get to New York in 45 (or fewer), arriving a few days before Thanksgiving (here’s the planned schedule). He’s also hoping to raise money for three charities (all on this page). He is scheduled to start running at, of course, 10 am (10-10-10 @ 10). We’ll check in along his journey, and his website has a variety of links you can use to do the same – he’s also on Facebook, where you can find Run USA 2010 here.

High-school sports: Seattle Lutheran coach gets 200th win

One more high-school-sports shoutout this weekend (in addition to Friday coverage of cross-country and football): We talked with a local coach who is looking back at how he began, as he celebrates his 200th win!

That’s Jeff Norton, longtime Seattle Lutheran High School girls’ soccer coach (and former principal, and current science teacher). He got his 200th win this past Monday when the Lady Saints beat Tacoma Baptist at Fort Steilacoom, 2-1. His team is 5-1-1 in their league so far this year and placed third in the state the last two years. He played college soccer at Concordia University in Portland; coaching SLHS was his first post-college job. He also coached the SLHS boys’ team that won the state championship in 1991.

Tonight’s high-school football: WSHS, CSIHS, SLHS scores

All three local high-school varsity-football teams lost tonight. At Southwest Athletic Complex in Westwood, the final score was Rainier Beach 31, West Seattle High School 8. WSHS’s lone touchdown came from sophomore DiAndre Johnson, who ran the ball 21 yards for the score:

At Memorial Stadium downtown a few hours earlier, it was Franklin 38, Chief Sealth International High School 0. And Seattle Lutheran High School was on the road in Skagit County, where they lost to La Conner, 21-9.

Third West Seattle Golf Course driving-range meeting: October 27

Thanks to Fairmount Community Association‘s Sharonn Meeks for spotting and sharing this news: The Seattle Parks webpage for the West Seattle Golf Course driving-range project now has a date for the next public meeting – October 27th. At the first meeting Aug. 5 (WSB coverage here), there was some concern about the potential site; at the second meeting Sept. 15 (WSB coverage here), a slightly different site was proposed, but its potential effects on the existing golf course drew concern. To see what the project team’s come up with now, be at the golf course’s clubhouse at 7 pm Wednesday 10/27.

Tonight’s high-school football scores: 3 lopsided games

Tonight’s three scores are all in, and in each one, somebody got blanked: According to the scoreboard at the Seattle Times, it was Seattle Lutheran 44, Darrington 0. Meantime, we were at the WSHS-Franklin game (covered in progress via Twitter), final score Franklin 56, WSHS 0. And we’ve just received the Chief Sealth IHS score from Sealth, which lost to Rainier Beach 48-0.

West Seattle HS football returns to field tonight, post-forfeit

(WSB photo from WSHS practice on Thursday)
All three of West Seattle’s high-school football teams lost last week – but none as visibly as West Seattle High School, which forfeited to O’Dea High School while down 48-0 at halftime, in pounding rain at West Seattle Stadium. We talked on Thursday with Coach Davis Lura, who says the team’s challenges include the fact they are going into tonight’s game against Franklin High School (7 pm, SWAC) with about 20 players dealing with some sort of injury: “(The number is) up, it’s down, it changes every day,” he told us, saying that’s been the situation since the season began with a non-conference match against Eisenhower HS (from Yakima). The emotional health of the team is good, though, according to Coach Lura, who says practice has been going well – he says no clear leader has emerged but about half a dozen of the players are sharing leadership roles, with spirits remaining high. The coach says Franklin has its best team in 10 years; last week, they beat Nathan Hale. And his players are aware they’re going in with a very limited squad – but they’re looking ahead to more players being able to come back in the weeks ahead, from academic probation as well as injuries, looking to the big Chief Sealth and Rainier Beach games later this fall.

High-school sports: Big soccer game between Sealth and WSHS

Going into their big game at Hiawatha Playfield this afternoon, the girls’ soccer teams from both West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School were undefeated in conference play. Only one would be able to keep that distinction once the game was over – and that’s West Seattle High School, whose team beat Sealth 2-0. Here are the topline stats from our partners at the Seattle Times.

Friday night high-school football: Tough night for all 3 teams

8:14 PM: Two of tonight’s three games involving local teams are over: At West Seattle Stadium, in the ongoing downpour, WSHS has just forfeited to O’Dea, with the game ending at halftime, 48-0. (We will be adding more to the story regarding what the coaching staff explained were the reasons for this – which included injured players and field conditions in pounding rain.)

(Video of Sealth’s lone touchdown, by Trey Brown, added early Saturday)
At Memorial Stadium downtown earlier, Chief Sealth International High School lost to Cleveland HS, 14-6. Seattle Lutheran is playing tonight in Tenino – no report yet.

1:08 AM: The score from Tenino was Northwest Christian (Lacey) 28, Seattle Lutheran 8. (Stats here.)

Changing course? New West Seattle Golf Course driving-range plan

(Click to see tonight’s new rendering in full: Top is west; the lighter area in the upper right is the previously suggested driving-range area; the area with dots around it is the newly proposed area)
By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

The design team for the West Seattle Golf Course‘s future driving range unveiled a proposal at tonight’s second public meeting that differs dramatically from what was roughed out for the first meeting – with architect Todd Schroeder calling it “a driving range that fits in the area where we can actually build it.”

That refers to what the team (bios here) explained were daunting challenges to the originally proposed site (see upper right of top rendering), close to the slope that runs down alongside West Seattle Rotary Viewpoint Park and parallels 35th SW. Among those challenges: It would have required a $1 million retaining wall (taken out of the $2.5 million construction budget for the $3.4 million project), as well as blocking the park view with tall netting, and other cons (such as removing trees, and hauling away more than 3,000 loads of soil during an excavation process). Those challenges led the team, overseen by the Parks Department‘s Garrett Farrell, to focus on a different section of the golf course site – one not requiring “digging into a nasty, gooey hillside,” as Farrell put it. (With the possibility, consultant Bob Thorpe said, of maybe even “blowing out” 35th SW.)

The area that’s now under consideration for the driving range is further east, not level but not on the slope, and would have driving-range users facing south-southeast into the golf course site from a starting point close to the existing clubhouse and parking lot. (See the full rendering here.)

But the newly proposed design drew sharp criticism from golfers (who, along with site neighbors, were present in much bigger numbers than the first meeting) – because it would mean big changes for the existing first and ninth holes on the golf course (the previous driving-range proposal would not have affected the course itself at all). One declared it a “no-go”; another vowed “revolt” if the course changes went through.
