Senior night for Seattle Lutheran High School‘s football team, with players and parents introduced just before kickoff Thursday night at West Seattle Stadium. Though the weather calmed as the game progressed, that didn’t help Evergreen Lutheran, beaten by the Saints, 42-14. Seattle Lutheran’s Fred Lisko turned in the big play of the night. In the second quarter, Evergreen moved the ball steadily down the field, only to fumble on the five-yard line. Lisko recovered that fumble and ran straight down the sideline to score. The play pretty much reflected Evergreen’s night. Each time the Eagles made some progress, the Saints managed to wrangle the ball back. During the first half, the Saints managed to successfully hang onto the ball, despite the wind and rain. Here’s Alex Reese scoring the first touchdown of the night.

Southwest District Council briefing on West Seattle Golf Course

The city is getting ready to spend $20 million on its golf courses over the next 20 years, and almost half that sum is designated for the West Seattle Golf Course, the Southwest District Council was reminded tonight. Deputy Parks Superintendent Christopher Williams attended the meeting to brief the SWDC on the status of plans for WSGC improvements (as discussed here in April). Williams said they’ll start pursuing the bond funding for the $20 million in January – leveraging the $1 million-plus profit the city’s golf courses make each year – and that’s also when he expects planning and design to begin for the first West Seattle project that’ll be teed up, a driving range (West Seattle is the only city golf course without one) against the hillside along 35th SW. Williams listed its cost at $4.5 million – that’s up from what was mentioned last spring, and says it’s slated to be built in 2011 after a year of planning and design that he promised will include meetings and other chances for public involvement. Also in the works, the $700,000 “perimeter trail” that will further connect the golf course with Camp Long, but Williams says it isn’t scheduled to be put in until the sixth or seventh year of the 20-year funding plan, and he says the clubhouse/crew facilities wouldn’t be built till “the end of the bond lifecycle.” Not good news, said Fairmount Community Association rep Sharonn Meeks – “that thing [current clubhouse] is falling down.” She also pointed out that nearby residents have concerns about the lighting for the driving range. One last note – Williams said West Seattle is under consideration for electric golf carts; it’s not just a matter of swapping out the carts, he explained, saying electric carts need special paths and a “cart barn” where they can plug in to charge up. Just back from the Southwest District Council meeting at South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor), where one of the guests was Deputy Parks Superintendent Christopher Williams. His main topic was an update on future West Seattle Golf Course improvements; we’ll write about that separately. After that briefing, he asked if anyone in the room — the council is made up of representatives from community groups and organizations around western West Seattle, which the city calls the “Southwest District” — had questions or concerns about the cyclocross controversy. (If you missed it – that was a bike race scheduled for Halloween in Lincoln Park, till the Parks Department canceled the permit with days to go after being contacted by upset community members.)

No revelations, but for the record, since the topic generated so much interest here originally (and spawned a couple of citywide media stories, here and here): First Williams recapped the background — saying Parks promised it wouldn’t allow those races in “natural-area parks” after a 2002 cyclocross race at Lincoln Park left some trails and turf at the park “utterly destroyed,” but that policy “got lost” in the bureaucracy somewhere until the granting of this permit came to the attention of “members of the community” who “reminded us of our commitment,” at which time, “five days before the event, we canceled it … The department was trying to keep a commitment we made to the community, trying to recognize that Lincoln Park is a natural-area park that needs to have uses compatible with its design as a natural-area park.”

One point of interest in his brief recap: He acknowledged that the cancellation announcement brought “a lot of e-mail from people who were upset on both sides … that kept us busy for a number of days.” The race promoters went on to have an event on Halloween after all, in White Center’s Lakewood Park; Williams says there’s one scheduled in Seattle, in Lower Woodland Park, for November 15.

Two of West Seattle’s 3 high-school varsity-football teams played last night. First – West Seattle High School lost to Seattle Prep 28-13, in a game that saw both sides get off to a slow start. Though it wasn’t raining, the game began with both teams having trouble hanging onto the ball. Prep fumbled twice and West Seattle coughed up the ball on the second play of the night, only to have the loose ball picked up and run in for a Prep score. Prep did manage to find a groove starting in the second. Their defense managed to control most of the game except for two lightning-quick series in which West Seattle scored each of its touchdowns. The Wildcats’ shortest series of the night lasted little more than 30 seconds, finishing with a 37-yard pass from quarterback Ellison Tran to receiver Markeem Adams. Next weekend, West Seattle moves on to play a team from the northwestern Washington. Time and location have yet to be announced. Meantime, at West Seattle Stadium last night:

That’s just part of why Seattle Lutheran High School had a big night, beating Chief Leschi 47-14. Both of Leschi’s touchdowns came toward the end the game. The Saints controlled the game offensively, led by quarterback Fred Lisko and running back Jake Lovely. Lovely had 154 yards rushing on the night and 76 yards receiving. Lisko had 42 yards rushing and 76 yards passing. Lisko and Lovely had three touchdowns each. Also adding to the Saints score was Lucas Driscoll, who had an interception that he ran 50 back 50 yards for a score. Next Thursday night, Evergreen Lutheran comes to West Seattle Stadium to play the Saints in the last regular season game of the year, which is also Seniors’ Night.

Hiawatha Playfield update: Getting back on track

2 weeks ago, the Parks Department disclosed the turf put down during the renovations at Hiawatha Playfield had to be replaced because it was found to be defective. The replacement is now well under way; Tim McMonigle from the West Seattle Soccer Club got the above photo on Tuesday and reports:

After getting replacement turf for the defective product, they have the majority of the turf down. They are still rolling it out, and then need to spread the rubber pellets.

As you can see in the foreground of the first picture, they are moving bundles of sod and putting it in various areas outside the field. It’s looking good, and hopefully will be done for our league games in December.

Update from Seattle Lutheran High School‘s Bil Hood:

The Seattle Lutheran Saints Girls Soccer Team ended their regular season yesterday with a perfect conference record, securing first place in the Sea-Tac B League. This assures them a place in the State Tournament November 20-21 in Sumner.

The Saints Cross Country Team travels to American Lake this Saturday to compete in Tri-Districts.

Finally, the Seattle Lutheran Football Team has two games to go in the regular season. Friday, October 30 and Thursday November 5. Both games are at West Seattle Stadium. If the Saints can win both games they will be headed into post-season competition.

Update: Lincoln Park cyclocross bike race canceled

The Parks Department confirms that this Saturday’s planned cyclocross race at Lincoln Park is now canceled. We got first hint of this last night when CC’d in an e-mail exchange from a West Seattle resident to Parks, in which the resident wrote, in part:

Several years ago, a cyclo-cross race at Lincoln Park caused major damage to native shrubs, grasses and trails. At that time, a large number of complaints led to (I thought) a ban on this kind of race in our Parks, and a revocation of a permit for a future race.

However, I just learned that the Parks Department has issued a permit (or so the organizer claims) for a similar race in Lincoln Park for this Saturday. …

The attached map (and photo!) shows clearly that this Cyclocross race will cut through the forest, on social trails, and given the previous damage, and the stated intent of this race, will cause irreparable harm to the native vegetation and shrubs.

I ask you, as a resident and frequent user of Lincoln Park, to please cancel this inappropriate permit, and prevent the damage from being done (as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure).

In a reply shortly thereafter, Parks spokesperson Dewey Potter replied to the original writer:

… Parks has taken a look at the event coming up this weekend, and we have decided to move it to another, more appropriate venue. Our staff will evaluate its success there, and make a decision about whether and where to permit future such events.

We checked back with Parks today, to see what that venue might be, and spokesperson Joelle Ligon just replied, “The cyclocross folks have cancelled all together. There will not be an event this weekend.” We will be contacting the race organizers too – they had also posted in the WSB Forums recently to get the word out about park-access changes in connection with the then-scheduled event. ADDED 2 PM: A little more information from Parks’ Ligon, answering our question about why this all played out at the last minute:

About four years ago, there was a cyclocross event at Lincoln Park. At that point, the community let us know that they did not like having cyclocross there. We made a commitment to not hold cyclocross at Lincoln again. When our files went electronic about two years ago, the prohibition on cyclocross at Lincoln did get translated into the new system; hence, permitting staff were not aware that they should not have permitted the event at all.

We just heard from the cyclocross organization, and they have let us know that they intend to hold their event on Nov. 15 at Lower Woodland Park. We will waive their permit fee for the Nov. 15 event, and we have refunded the Lincoln permit fee.

3:35 PM UPDATE: As Zac announced in comments, the race promoters’ website now has a long explanation of what’s transpired from their standpoint, and what’s next — read it in its entirety here. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: The race will be held at Lakewood Park in White Center instead – as announced on Twitter by MFG Cyclocross, and confirmed by this post on the King County Parks news site.

Since West Seattle High School finished the season in a three-way tie for division lead with Rainier Beach and Nathan Hale, the three teams had to play tiebreaking minigames tonight at Memorial Stadium. Those games are now over. WSHS beat RB in the first one, lost to Hale in the second one, and the end result is, its next game is Friday, 5 pm, vs. Seattle Prep at Memorial Stadium. Lincoln Park notes: Bike race next Saturday; work party on 11/7

Thanks to Shannon for sharing that photo from a walk today in Lincoln Park. It goes well with a couple of Lincoln Park-related notes we wanted to pass along tonight: First, if you haven’t seen the announcement in the WSB Forums – one week from today, a big bicycle race will affect park access/usage in a big way. It’s a cyclocross event, explained by promoter Zac this way: “Cyclocross is a bicycle race, mostly on grass, some dirt, a little pavement, and there are some places the riders must dismount, pick up the bike and run (all in one fluid motion). Anyone can race, and there’s a category for just about everyone. All you need is bike that you can ride on grass and dirt, and a helmet.” More info at mfgcyclocross.com; also, Zac shared a flyer and accompanying park map you can see here, for details on which trails will be affected next Saturday, and exactly when. Another Lincoln Park note – two weeks from today, on Saturday 11/7, it’s Green Seattle Day in parks and greenspaces all over the city, and many groups of volunteers will be working to make our city a little greener – like Friends of Lincoln Park, whose monthly work party will happen that day, per this announcement we received:

From our partners at the Seattle Times, an update on what was decided this morning regarding the next steps in the high-school football postseason, since West Seattle High School‘s win last night (WSB coverage here) has WSHS in a three-way tie for the division lead with Rainier Beach and Nathan Hale: The tiebreaker games (which are short matches) are at Memorial Stadium downtown Monday night, with Westside playing RB at 6 pm. The winner advances to a 7 pm game against NH, and whomever wins that one goes into the league championship game. We’ll be there Monday to cover it all (including live tweets at @wsblive).

That’s the West Seattle High School varsity football team accepting the Huling Bowl trophy – again – on Homecoming Night, after a 26-8 victory over Chief Sealth High School at West Seattle Stadium. The win put West Seattle in a three-way tie with Rainier Beach and Nathan Hale for first place in the Metro League’s Sound Division. Since that was the last regular-season game, this morning there’ll be a coin flip to determine how everything will shake out in the playoff picture. At this point West Seattle could play as early as Monday night or as late as next Friday. The Wildcats managed to pull off the win despite losing quarterback Ellison Tran early in the second half. Running back Isaiah Jenkins stepped into the QB role and kept the team moving down the field. Tran came back in the fourth quarter and was part of a flea-flicker that led to a West Seattle touchdown. While Tran sat out most of the half, Jenkins and teammate Markeem Adams split the play-calling. Coach Davis Lura talked about it afterward:

Chief Sealth scored with only five seconds left in the game. The Seahawks’ Tracy Manley caught a pass and quarterback Daniel Davis was successful on the two-point conversion. Meantime, the crosstown rivalry made way for good-spirited cheerleader and band action on the field at halftime:

Before the game, a barbecue and rally – with Tom and Steve Huling at the grill, dishing up free hot dogs:

This is the 92nd WSHS homecoming; the school’s Homecoming Dance is tomorrow night at Club One 3 One downtown.

All three of West Seattle’s high schools play football tonight. Marquee game: The 92nd Homecoming for West Seattle High School, which is also the 10th crosstown “Huling Bowl“: Westside vs. Chief Sealth, 7 pm at West Seattle Stadium (4432 35th SW). Both principals agreed to go on camera for video messages about the big game – first Bruce Bivins from WSHS (the hat he wore was for Royalty Day), then John Boyd from CSHS:

As you heard the principals mention, a barbecue (free hot dogs!) and rally are planned before the big game, 5:30 pm, and there’s an afterparty at Rocksport in The Junction. Meantime, Seattle Lutheran High School plays football tonight too, 7 pm vs. Tacoma Baptist at Curtis HS in University Place (map).

VOLLEYBALL: From West Seattle High School assistant volleyball coach Jim Hardy:

Westside’s Volleyball team will face Rainier Beach in the final home match on Thursday @ 7 pm at WSHS. This will be the Senior Night for 4 Senior players- Jaimi Tapia, Diana Goldberg and 2009 Captains Mariah Doll and Jess Harrison. West Seattle defeated Rainier Beach in 5 close games in their previous meeting. The Wildcats have clinched the #2 Seed for the Metro Tournament and a guaranteed spot in the District championship tournament.

SOCCER: Sandy reports, “The WSHS girls’ soccer team beat Nathan Hale (Tuesday) 4-2. If they win their next two games (against Sealth and Ingraham) they will play NH again for the Metro Sound Division title.”

FOOTBALL: Voting’s still open in KIRO’s Game of the Week competition. The West Seattle HS homecoming game vs. Chief Sealth, Friday night, 7 pm, WS Stadium, is in the running, as is the Seattle Lutheran match at Tacoma Baptist (7 pm Friday), so whichever WS high school you root for, you’ve got a reason to vote; go here.

Both games just ended – at the Southeast Athletic Complex, it was Rainier Beach 21, West Seattle HS 14 (now in a three-way tie for the division lead with RB and Nathan Hale); at the Southwest Athletic Complex, it was Franklin 20, Chief Sealth HS 6. Next Friday night – it’s the WSHS-Sealth crosstown faceoff for Westside’s homecoming game. We’ve got some video from the Sealth game (including the cheerleaders’ halftime zombie dance) and more notes to come. ADDED 10:17 PM: Two video clips – top, Sealth’s lone touchdown – halftime score was 20-0; Sealth defense kept Franklin off the board in the second half; Sealth offense got the touchdown in the 4th quarter. (Chief Sealth’s Daniel Davis explains why the team’s Oregon trip last week [Clatskanie 21, Sealth 14] was fun)

When Chief Sealth High School varsity-football captain Daniel Davis was a freshman, he thought the best way to go about the first week of football practice was to not say much and get the lay of the land.

That changed a couple of days into that week, when he and another player decided to throw the ball around. Near the end of practice, Daniel launched a pass to a friend that covered almost 40 yards. “Coach ran over to me, ” he said, “and asked, ‘Freshman, did you throw that ball?'” After he said he did, the coach asked, without hesitating, “You want to play quarterback?”

15 years old at the time, Davis found it to be a pretty daunting question. But after talking to cousins who had played not only high school but college ball, he decided to give it a try. At his very first game as the freshman starting quarterback he remembers his first series as being nothing to write home about, but the next time he got the ball he found a receiver on the sideline and managed to put together an 80-yard pass play that led to a touchdown. Near the end of that same game he threw another touchdown pass to his friend and fellow freshman, Greg Wilson.
