From the West Seattle Weekend Lineup and from post-WSWL arrivals in the WSB inbox last night, some of today’s highlights:

IN THE LEGISLATURE: At left, those are your 34th District state legislators – Sen. Joe McDermott, Rep. Sharon Nelson, Rep. Eileen Cody – during their Town Hall at High Point Community Center on Saturday. Today, they are back to work in Olympia – as they explained on Saturday, they’re now at the stage where more deadlines loom for bills to either advance or be declared officially dead for the year. Today the Senate Ways and Means Committee (of which McDermott’s a member) has a public hearing on one bill of particular West Seattle interest – HB 1679, to make sure catastrophically injured public safety personnel like former West Seattle police officer Jason McKissack don’t lose their medical benefits. Advocates are asking for a show of support like the one received in the House Ways and Means Committee last month (WSB coverage here); the hearing’s in Room 4 of the Cherberg Building on the Capitol campus, 3:30 pm.

ROAD CLOSURE REMINDER: East/southeast of Youngstown Arts Center in North Delridge, work is scheduled to start on the project that will close 23rd/22nd SW for up to six weeks – see our previous story for the latest.

WEST SEATTLE PRESCHOOL FAIR: School-choice season is now in full swing and more than a dozen of West Seattle’s preschools are hoping to meet prospective families and answer tonight at the first-ever West Seattle Preschool Fair, 5:30-8:30 pm at St. John the Baptist Church‘s community hall (3050 California SW).

AND IF YOUR LITTLE ONE’S TOO LITTLE FOR PRESCHOOL … maybe you’ll be interested in the debut of Baby Story Time at the Southwest Branch Library (9010 35th SW). 11:30 am today; details here.

SPEAKING OF SCHOOL: A reminder, midwinter break’s over and everybody’s back today.

PARKS AND GREEN SPACES LEVY OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE: Want to find out how the money you’re paying because of the 2008 levy is being spent? Got something to suggest to the citizen volunteers who are reviewing that spending? Be at the committee’s regular meeting, 7 tonight, Parks HQ downtown (100 Dexter Ave. N.). Among the agenda items – an overview of the letters of intent received so far.

EVEN MORE … like regular bingo and trivia events … on the WSB Events page. Have a great day (it’s off to a great start, as this sunrise photo from John LaSpina shows) …

From comments: Tom Stewart memorial website; graffiti tipster

In case you “don’t usually read the comments” – there are tons today, and we thank everyone for taking the time to share their thoughts. Two things of note we just found by reviewing the most recent wave:

TOM STEWART MEMORIAL SITE: As with many highly successful people, the owner/chair of formerly West Seattle-based Services Group of America clearly had a lot of fans, and non-fans. For those who wish to share condolences in a more official way than commenting on news stories, a commenter on WSB points out that SGA has now set up a webpage with links to family and business photos as well as an option for commenting. Here’s the link. Meantime, nothing new so far in the investigation of the Arizona helicopter crash that killed him along with his wife, 5-year-old daughter, and two others.

GRAFFITI TIPSTER: Our filter (which has saved the site from more than a million spammer “comments,” so we try not to get mad at its occasional error) held onto this comment for a long time till we just spotted it – Paul says he tipped police to the suspected graffiti vandals arrested last night, and implores you to “get involved”:

I am the person who witnessed the 3 kids applying their tags to the Rite-Aid wall. I called it in and while waiting for police, followed the kids from a distance, then called back to alert police of their location. No flag waving but the point is that I got involved and stayed involved until (luckily) resulted in the 3 arrests. These are young (young!) kids. Please get involved when the opportunity arises. The only way to end tagging is to make it difficult for taggers to achieve their goal. Handcuffs do that really well.

Police reiterate, call 911 when something is happening NOW – don’t worry about evaluating if it’s a real emergency; the 911 operator’s job is to sort that out. Meantime, following the graffiti-arrest story, we asked your opinions on the state of the spray-paint (etc.) vandalism problem in West Seattle – please consider joining the discussion if you haven’t already.

What else is up? Here’s the frequently updated WSB Events calendar.

West Seattle scenes: Almost spring

With what winter we had (didn’t have) indisputably fading, springlike beauty keeps cropping up. The field of primroses was photographed by WSB’er “westseattledood” at Westwood Village QFC. Along for the walk – the faithful companion, checking out the daffodils:

Also out and about this afternoon (as usual) – Chas Redmond, who caught the beauty of Alki even as the afternoon clouds started crowding out the sun:

East of there, Chas says he asked workers what’s up with the 53rd Avenue Pump Station work – which’ll be discussed at Thursday night’s Alki Community Council meeting – and they told him the pedestrian path should be open within a week or so; then there’s still work to do on the outside traffic lane. ADDED 12:33 AM: Two more MUST-SEE photos – West Seattleite Alice Enevoldsen shares husband Jason Gift Enevoldsen‘s photos of the Tuesday night crescent moon on her website, here.

Today/tonight: Music camp, furloughs, Fat Tuesday x 3, more…

MID-WINTER BREAK MUSIC CAMP STARTS TODAY – and there’s still room at this camp for 4th-8th grade musicians, held at Denny International Middle School, according to this comment from leader Marcus Pimpleton on our original announcement. Be there, 9 am. Details here.

CITY FURLOUGHS – The city’s spreading its money-saving furlough days around – today, Neighborhood Service Centers (including The Junction and Delridge) are closed, and some SDOT workers are on furlough.

STATE OF THE CITY – Not a furlough day for Mayor Mike McGinn; he’s giving his first State of the City speech at 2 pm. If you can’t be at City Hall to see it in person, watch live on Seattle Channel, online or on cable 21.

FAT TUESDAY #1 – PACZKIS GONE WILD: It’s Fat Tuesday, and the second annual edition of a wacky tradition at Metropolitan Market/Admiral (WSB sponsor) – an intracompany competition involving the filled Polish donuts called paczkis (pronounced POONCH-keys). You’re welcome to watch (and we’re told paczkis and coffee will be handed out to spectators), 11 am. (Here’s our story from last year.)

FAT TUESDAY #2 – MATADOR HAITI FUNDRAISER: Matador‘s donating all its profits today/tonight, all locations including West Seattle, to Haiti quake relief.

FAT TUESDAY #3 – BRIDGE PARK PARTY: For Mardi Gras at Bridge Park in High Point, Southern dinner & dancing, 5:30 pm, call to RSVP: 206-938-6394.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL AND SUSTAINABLE WEST SEATTLE TONIGHT: As previewed here.

And more! on the WSB Events calendar!

From the Hero Memorial Workout at CrossFit West Seattle in the Admiral District on Sunday afternoon: Sometimes, the intensity of an activity is shown most vividly in the moments when participants pause, like this. The workout was in memory of SPD Officer Tim Brenton, murdered in the line of duty on Halloween night, and a fundraiser for the Behind the Badge Foundation. Also from the Admiral District, a sight in the sky:

A Valentine’s rainbow arced in the east (thanks also to “k” for sending a shot of it). One more sighting – “The King” really did materialize at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market, as promised by market managers:

Nice jumpsuit! That’s a Twitpic, tweeted by @callingindead.
