Thanks to Monty for this morning’s view of Mount Rainier, out in all its splendor just in time for summer to officially arrive at 4:09 pm today. Here are highlights from the WSB West Seattle Events Calendar for the rest of today/tonight:

TONIGHT’S SCHEDULED BRIDGE CLOSURE: The westbound lanes of the Spokane Street Viaduct are scheduled to be closed, along with one eastbound lane, 10 pm-5 am. (We’re checking to see if this plan is changed at all by this morning’s opening of the 1st Avenue S. offramp, which according to last week’s announcement was not supposed to happen till tomorrow.)

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING: In both public comments and on the agenda, there are items of interest for West Seattle at tonight’s meeting of the Seattle Public Schools Board of Directors. The list of public-comment speakers includes several who plan to address the announcement (first reported here Friday) that Middle College High School will move from South Seattle Community College to portables at the Boren Building, which also will be home to the new K-5 STEM elementary. The agenda includes next year’s budget, with funding for reopening Fairmount Park – to come from past-levy-related money rather than next year’s BEX IV levy – among the line items. Board meetings now start at 4:15 pm, with the public-comment period at 5, at district HQ in SODO; here’s the agenda.

DINNER AND MUSIC AT THE SENIOR CENTER: Doors open at 5 pm for a turkey dinner and live music at the Senior Center of West Seattle (California/Oregon), headlined by Casey MacGill. Details here; reservations requested.

2 HOT TOPICS AT DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOODS DISTRICT COUNCIL: Tonight’s 7 pm meeting of the council with reps from organizations around eastern West Seattle has two hot topics on the agenda: the proposed Delridge rechannelization, and the plan for 200 Highland Park homes to get trash service every other week as part of the city’s pilot project starting next month. Public’s welcome; the meeting’s at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW).

SUMMER SOLSTICE SUNSET WATCH: As previewed here last night – be at Solstice Park around 8:45 pm and watch the sunset (expected just after 9) with West Seattle-residing NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen. Her website explains the event, and how to get to Solstice Park if you haven’t been there before.

More on the calendar!

Watch the Summer Solstice sunset with an expert guide at Solstice Park

We can’t guarantee the sunset will look like this (though the forecast is promising, if chilly) …

(Jim in Fauntleroy shared the photo this week but says it’s from about 3 weeks ago)
… but tomorrow night, you can celebrate the summer-solstice sunset at West Seattle’s own Solstice Park, during the 13th seasonal sunset watch with NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen. Sunset as seen from the park over the north end of Lincoln Park (location info here) is usually about 10 minutes before the “official” time, which, she says, means you’d want to be there by 8:45 pm for the 9:01-or-so sunset. Read more about it on her website, Alice’s Astro Info.

P.S. The actual solstice moment is 4:09 pm our time Wednesday.

P.P.S. Alice is looking for suggestions for where to host a Mars Landing Watch event on August 5th around 10:30 pm – Internet required. Any ideas?

West Seattle Monday: Green schools; public safety; traffic alerts…

Took the photo at Anchor Park one sunny morning last week … now it’s at least handy for daydreaming during our soggy Monday morning. (“Clearing” on Wednesday, according to the newest forecast – just in time for the official arrival of summer and West Seattle Solstice Sunset Watch!) Looking ahead to the rest of today and tonight:

TRAFFIC ALERTS: Spokane Street Viaduct eastbound lanes and one westbound lane are scheduled to be closed 10 pm-5 am, along with additional surface-street closures overnight in SODO (detailed here). Today’s also the first of two days during which daytime bike-trail work near the “low bridge” is under way – explained here. Prospective volunteers especially welcome to come check out the group.

PUBLIC SAFETY – A COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: Not in West Seattle but a topic affecting us all. And the announcement comes from West Seattleite Susie Tennant of Town Hall Seattle:

Town Hall Seattle staff, members, and board are deeply shaken and disturbed by the events that took place so close to our offices on May 30th. The other shooting the same day, previous incidents in May, and earlier in the year have caused us great concern. Like all of Seattle, we are trying to process the situation and wonder what we as a community can do to address it. As an institution whose purpose is to create a safe place for the expression of ideas, and which has hosted community conversations on topics including education, Occupy Seattle, artist space, the environment, and more, we can think of no more appropriate response than to gather as a community for a constructive conversation about these events which affect us all. A group of city leaders and citizens — including Mayor Mike McGinn, Seattle Police Chief John Diaz, Councilmember Bruce Harrell, Mariko Lockhart, director of Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat, and others — will discuss issues of public safety, gun safety, mental illness, gangs, and how a community not only stays safe, but heals itself after such tragedies.

7:30 tonight, free with reservation at brownpapertickets.com. Town Hall is at 1119 8th Ave. downtown.

DJ NIGHT AT WEST 5: Monday night means the “Flat Earth Society” at West 5 in The Junction, with guest DJs and fab vinyl. Tonight, Rosemary Otero of Light in the Attic Records is scheduled, 9 pm.

And there’s more! Check out the calendar.

PRE-MEETING POTLUCK FOR ADMIRAL NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION: This isn’t business as usual for ANA, but president Katy Walum said at last week’s Admiral District business gathering that given recent troubling events around the city, it might be a good time for people to get to know each other better, spend a little more time face-to-face, rather than just rushing in at the last minute and jumping right into a meeting. So at 6 pm, lower-level meeting room at Admiral Congregational Church (California/Hill), you’re invited to a potluck – bring something to share – before tonight’s 7 pm meeting. You can even come to the potluck and not stay for the meeting. More info in this update on the ANA website.

June showers bring …June flowers? Thanks to “G” for the bright photo, which, as with a different community-contributed flower photo earlier this week, is at least a counterpoint to the gray weather. On with the list of calendar highlights for today/tonight:

After the shootings: Community-wide moment of silence Sunday

E-mail from the Seattle Neighborhood Group calls our attention to a plan in the works for a citywide moment of silence on Sunday. The idea comes from the group Compassionate Seattle, not just because of the shooting rampage that ended here last Wednesday afternoon, but because of other recent deadly violence around the city. Compassionate Seattle is calling for “3 minutes of silent contemplation, prayer, reflection or meditation” at noon this Sunday (June 10th), following “the ringing of bells everywhere – including church towers and individuals in the streets” at 11:45 am). The group’s Facebook event page for this can be found here.

Meantime, the lone survivor of last Wednesday’s shootings, Café Racer employee Leonard Meuse, has been upgraded to satisfactory condition, report our friends at KING 5.

West Seattle Wednesday: From tunnel to tide, council to concert

(Seen at low tide; photo by Tracey Spenser – thanks!)
Wednesday begins with sunshine! Here’s the forecast – and here’s some of what’s on the schedule for today/tonight:

TUNNEL GROUNDBREAKING: Though the actual tunnel-boring machine won’t be at work till next year, there’s a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Highway 99 tunnel this morning in SODO, 9:30 am. Not a public event, but watch for coverage.

FINAL LOW-LOW-LOW TIDE: This is the last of four days with a low tide below -3 – it’ll be -3.4 just before 1 pm; and the Seattle Aquarium volunteer beach naturalists are out again too, 11 am-2:30 pm, Constellation Park (south of Alki Point) and Lincoln Park, near Colman Pool.

LIBRARY STORY TIMES: From the Seattle Public Library Calendar of Events: It’s Toddler Story Time at the Southwest Branch (35th/Henderson) at 11 am and Somali Story Time at the High Point Branch (35th/Raymond) at 5 pm.

(added) PARTY AT LINK: The apartment complex at 4550 38th Ave SW sends word they’re “hosting a Stella and Dot jewelry party tonight from 5pm-8 pm! Sugar Rush will be supplying cupcakes for the party and refreshments will also be served.”

K-5 STEM AT BOREN DESIGN TEAM: Another meeting for the committee with community and school reps shaping Seattle’s new public school (here’s our report on their meeting last week, with topics including curriculum discussions for reading and art, and possible uniforms). They’ll meet at 6:15 pm in the library at Madison Middle School. The public’s welcome, and there’s usually a spot for audience comments.

West Seattle Tuesday: Delridge Produce Coop Trivia Night; tide; transit; schools …

LOW-LOW-LOW TIDE: Even lower than yesterday (which is when Monty photographed those mussels – thanks!) – today, it’s down to -3.8 at 12:05 pm; beach naturalists will be out at Constellation and Lincoln Parks starting at 10 this morning.

TRANSIT OF VENUS VIEWING: If the sun gives a hint of appearing, so that we’d be able to see Venus crossing (but don’t look AT the sun!) you should be able to find NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen at Solstice Park – details are on her website.

Both are scheduled to reopen Friday under private ownership, according to what their respective new owners have told WSB.

Planning an event in West Seattle/White Center/South Park? Please let us know so we can calendarize it!
