Another Viaduct voice: West Seattle Chamber of Commerce

In the two days since the two “scenarios” for Alaskan Way Viaduct Central Waterfront replacement were announced — one, a “couplet” of surface streets; the other, a new single-deck viaduct, 2 side-by-side structures — we have brought you expanded comments from some well-known voices: The West Seattleites on the Stakeholders Advisory Committee, Vlad Oustimovitch of Gatewood (read his thoughts here) and Pete Spalding of Pigeon Point (read his, here), as well as former West Seattle Herald editor Jack Mayne (read his guest editorial here). Tonight, another voice, advocating on behalf of West Seattle economic concerns: the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. WSB received a copy yesterday of this letter sent Thursday to area elected officials:

Re: Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Options

Dear Governor Gregoire, Executive Sims and Mayor Nickels:

The West Seattle Chamber of Commerce adopted position statements in May 2006 on various transportation issues. Included in this document is a position for the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project:

The Alaskan Way Viaduct capacity needs to be fully replaced in either an elevated or tunnel alternative, the “boulevard” concept is unworkable.

Importantly, the current plan to remove all viaduct capacity during two years of construction is completely unacceptable due to the disastrous consequences of such a plan to both commuters and emergency vehicles.

These positions were adopted after very careful consideration. While the West Seattle Peninsula continues to absorb great population growth (home to approximately 20% of the City’s population), our region has failed to be recognized as meriting the transportation and economic infrastructure that it deserves to create a community that can be self sustaining.

Given this dynamic, West Seattle’s population continues to seek employment, medical care, goods and services that are situated off of the Peninsula. Our community sends thousands of cars OFF of the peninsula onto SR-99 and I-5 every day (presently including the Southworth and Vashon ferry traffic as well as industrial / freight transport) and thousands of cars returning each day. Our gravest concern is that the construction impacts along the waterfront will impede our community’s ability to access job, critical medical care, and services not available on the peninsula. It is equally clear that the re-routing of traffic to I-5 will cause great hardship to our commuters, our businesses, the neighboring industrial community, and emergency vehicles. We must remind you ALL that access to jobs and medical care is paramount.

We have strong concerns about the long term impacts of a surface design and strongly urge you to retain at least one tunnel option on the short list.

The tunnel options provide for on-going movement to the downtown corridor during construction; lessens the overall impact of any additional congestion on I-5; maintains capacity for freight and commuters thereby easing a significant burden on West Seattle; and after completion, provides for both through access and an improved waterfront boulevard, the best of both worlds.

We request you give careful consideration to the long term impacts on the West Seattle community that would result should a surface option be implemented. We formally request a more thorough investigation and disclosure of genuine economic and social impacts on the West Seattle community as a whole.

The superficial and cosmetic appeal of a surface option will quickly disappear when the West Seattle Bridge and Spokane Street Viaduct become parking lots; when Alaskan Way, Second Avenue and Fourth Avenue become truck routes; and traffic sits idling at stop light congesting our streets.

We urge officials to preserve the tunnel options and consider truly “putting people first.”

Our organization is committed to working with state, county and city transportation agencies to bring about change for the good, to help meet the demands, but our adopted positions are ones that speak clearly on behalf of our community.

Holiday helpers: WS-based Vending Solutions’ donation drive

That photo shows some of the food and clothing collected so far for West Seattle Food Bank and West Seattle Helpline by the folks at Vending Solutions. Linda Jarvimaki wrote to tell us that VS — a “West Seattle-based, nationwide management company” — is having an office competition to liven up its campaign to support those in need, “the gals against the guys… The team with the most points wins a prize and the individual person who brings in the most points wins a prize, both prizes donated by management. Each week, there is a bonus point day – everything from goofy hat day to slipper day where teams can accumulate points if every team member complies with the bonus point day requirement and brings a one-point item (such as a can of food.)” Linda also shared a team photo from the aforementioned “goofy hat day”:

She adds, “We also had a salad bar day – everyone brought an item for the salad bar and then contributed a dollar to eat (and also had to wear an apron.) In addition, we are having an auction – several people donated their talents (photography, baking, crafts) and all monies collected will be donated to our community. Although our office is small, it’s amazing what can be accomplished. Prost West Seattle update: Tuesday opening set

Thanks to “Alkidude” for pointing out in a new comment on last week’s update that Prost West Seattle‘s website says it’s opening day after tomorrow (Tuesday 12/2), just in time to toast the holiday season. (This page lists all 10 beers you’ll get to choose from.) We interviewed proprietor Chris Navarra two months ago for this preview; it’s been less than seven months since our first report Prost was coming to town – a relatively short amount of development time for this type of business, in our recent coverage experience. Prost West Seattle is in the 3400 block of California (map), in the space that was previously Basic Green Box, just south of The Bohemian, two doors south of Spiro’s Pizza and Pasta.

Hours till the official kickoff of shopping season

It’s on the marquee for the Luna Park business districtlet, but it really goes for all of West Seattle. Sure, we know some West Seattleites are going to do the early-morning Black Friday thing – we overheard chatter about it everywhere we went the past few days, from coffeehouses to our dentist’s office. Some chain stores in West Seattle (Target, Staples, Radio Shack, Kits among them) open at 6 am; at the malls, some stores will throw open the doors at 4, and you’ll probably see doorbuster-dreaming shoppers on stakeout, interviewed on tonight’s 11 pm news. (This BF site says many of the deals are already “live” online, by the way.)

Once all that is said and done — show your West Seattle shopkeepers some love; they’re trying to show some right back. The West Seattle Junction Association (WSB sponsor), for example – inviting you to not just “shop local,” but to go all-out and “Live Local” – has dozens of stores participating in a $5,000 giveaway – enter the raffle for free at any participating store (see the list here), and you’re in the running for all sorts of gift certificates, with winners to be drawn at three Junction events, starting with the Tree Lighting at 5 pm 12/6. Many shops have special events in the works too — like some late-night shopping on Art Walk night 12/11 (with free child care — more here) plus offerings from open houses to trunk shows (many are listed on this page of the Junction website), some in conjunction with special “Hometown Holidays Sundays” 12/7, 12/14, 12/21, when you can also get Santa photos and take mule-wagon rides.

Speaking of Santa, he’ll be in the house at Westwood Village (the Santa House by Bed Bath Beyond, Eats Market Cafe, and Wyatt’s Jewelers) on Saturdays and Sundays starting this weekend. Merchants elsewhere in West Seattle are geared up too – like those in the Admiral District:

That’s some of the decor inside Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor), which has some seasonal scoop on its blog — like decorating ideas and the “Gifts Under $10 List.” Click! is one of many West Seattle stores adding extra days and hours for the holiday season. They’ll be open 7 days a week starting next week; we noticed on a recent stroll through The Junction that the Discovery Shop (American Cancer Society thrift store) is adding Sunday hours till Christmas; West Seattle-based online toy sellers Nico and Zoe will open their ActivSpace storefront 11 am-2 pm on Fridays through the holiday-shopping season. In no particular order, just various loose ends and other items we wanted to mention:

JAIL-SITES FIGHT: One thing we didn’t mention after Monday night’s Highland Park Action Committee meeting — HPAC is urging a big turnout at next Wednesday’s (12/3) City Hall hearing about the newly proposed downtown site for a new jail — they had been advocating downtown siting, and feel their research on the issue has helped put this site on the list (which still includes one West Seattle site, Highland Park Way/West Marginal Way). They want to show strength in numbers to back the potential downtown site. Doors open 6 pm Wednesday (program starts 6:30), City Hall downtown.

BIKE SHOP MOVE COMPLETE: We first reported three months ago that Aaron’s Bicycle Repair was moving into the now-former Morgan Junction state liquor store space. The move is complete and owner Aaron Goss sent this link with photos taken as the renovation work proceeded (and was finished).

TWO NOTABLE NEW SEVEN-FIGURE REAL-ESTATE LISTINGS: The multiplex at 2810 Alki SW, just east of the Alki Urban Market/All the Best Pet Care/Cactus building, is up for sale, $1,850,000. Last year, there was a development proposal for this site to be the new home of Pegasus Pizza, which of course has since gone into the ex-Coyotes on Alki (etc.) space further east. Also up for sale, a 9-unit apartment building on Ferry SW in North Admiral, $1,250,000 (here’s that listing).

WEST SEATTLEITES FEATURED IN TV HEALTH REPORT: Dr. Tami Meraglia and Seattle Civic Dance Theatre‘s Kim Dinsmoor are in this story examining concerns about the body-care-product ingredients called parabens.

WSB is 24/7/365 (this year, 366) so we’ll still be here on Thanksgiving Day, but not planning to publish as many items as usual (unless of course major news happens). First up, the “final” coffee/supermarket hours list in the early am (the info’s already on the Holiday Happenings page).

West Seattle beverage buzz: Prost update; ex-Sleepless

That’s the new sign up outside the future home of Prost West Seattle, on California SW just south of The Bohemian and Spiro’s (here’s a map). Not only is the sign up, so is the Prost West Seattle website, with the promise that Prost is “opening really really soon”; this page elaborates that Prost expects to open in December, with hours 3 pm-2 am 7 days a week (same thing proprietor Chris Navarra told us in the interview for this story we published two months ago).

One more West Seattle beverage note: The Harbor Ave drive-thru coffee shack where we got the photo at left almost exactly a year ago (we’re showing Christmas lights again this year, by the way; send us addresses!) has a new look and a new name. We noticed repainting under way last week – from the former red, to a latte-like beige with tan trim – but didn’t think anything of it till we saw one of their coffee cards over the weekend and noticed the name has changed, from Sleepless Coffee to West Bay Espresso.

West Seattle weekend scenes: Open the doors; deck the halls

A few things we didn’t get the chance to share earlier because of everything that was happening: First, just in time for West Seattle Junction holiday shopping, the renovated Stop and Shop opened today on the street level of the Senior Center of West Seattle. Among the eclectic offerings, a $25 Santa suit:

Stop and Shop is now open 10 am-4 pm, seven days a week. Also in holiday mode today, the Camp Long Lodge, where a festive crowd turned park tree trimmings into wreaths:

At the center of that photo is Camp Long’s Gretchen Graber, who reminds you NOT to get your own trimmings at city parks – these were salvaged from work crews — but you can certainly make wreaths out of greenery from your own yard. In fact, your next chance to learn the art of wreathmaking is this Wednesday (11/26) at West Seattle Nursery (WSB sponsor), with a free wreathmaking class at 10 am (and more later in the holiday season – see the Holiday Happenings page).

First, the getting – We caught that quick video clip in The Junction this afternoon, as festive boxes (decorated by Swee Swee Paperie) arrived at merchants participating in the big $5,000 Giveaway – go to a participating West Seattle Junction (WSB sponsor) merchant (full list on the 2nd page of this flyer) any time starting NOW to enter (free!) the raffle for Junction gift certificates totaling $5,000. There will be three raffle drawings, starting with one at the Christmas Tree Lighting at 5 pm December 6th (44th/Alaska).

One last coffee note – the other day, we mentioned that Xconomy Seattle seemed to be slighting West Seattle in its post about innovators’ favorite coffee hangouts; it heard the call and has updated the list, a bit. 42nd/Admiral spaces – long slated for demolition – up for lease

Once upon a time — actually just about three years ago — 4200 Admiral and 4210 Admiral (regular map here; Google Street View image above) were to comprise the site of a new mixed-use building; the application is still technically “open” on the DPD website, including the original vision of a 14,000-square-foot grocery store, once speculated to potentially be the long-yearned-for Trader Joe’s. With this development long on the drawing board (and a demolition permit even applied for), some businesses in the buildings closed or moved (like Auto Buff a year and a half ago). Most of the first rush of activity played out before WSB launched three years ago, so we don’t have much archived coverage, but we knew of the applications and kept an eye on the project pages. Now, something new — spaces up for lease; this CL ad covers the TNT tavern space at 4210 Admiral, this CL ad covers “office space plus warehouse” right on the corner at 4200.

That’s the scene at the Camp Long Lodge, where the first-ever CoolMom.org Toy Swap/Sale is happening till 1 this afternoon (added later: everything’s been marked down till sale’s over!) — the “swapping” happened in advance with donations taken in exchange for sale credit, so today, just bring your $ – proceeds benefit WestSide Baby and West Seattle Food Bank as well as CoolMom. Not far away, it’s the second and final day of the Holiday Bazaar at Providence Mount St. Vincent:

You can shop the bazaar till 3 pm. Christmas countdown: The Junction gets decked

Driving through The Junction this afternoon, we spotted the lamp-post wreaths going up. Just in time for various holiday events happening this weekend (as you can see in the latest West Seattle Weekend Lineup). It also gives us a chance to mention that the dates are set for Junction fun you can enjoy before, during, and after shopping trips, as the West Seattle Junction Association (WSB sponsor) reminds you to “Live Local” this holiday season, and beyond. An hour of fun is planned for the West Seattle Junction Christmas-tree lighting, 5 pm December 6, including music and giveaways – dozens of Junction merchants are offering free tickets (available starting next weekend) for December raffling of thousands of dollars in gift certificates, and the tree lighting event will include an announcement of some of the winners (as well as holiday music and surprises). You’ll also see Junction fun on the following Sunday afternoons: December 7, 14, 21, with carriage rides and lots more – instead of picking just one “Hometown Holidays” weekend like last year, they’re spreading out the holiday joy.
