Sunny offer on a rainy day: Red Cup/Solar Epiphany giveaway

Perhaps the most unusual contest we’ve seen in a while: “West Seattle’s first hybrid coffee shop” – Red Cup Espresso – and Solar Epiphany LLC (who provided the photo) are giving away a “complete solar installation” (a 350-watt expandable grid-tied installation). Entries are being accepted at Red Cup starting today, and the drawing is at 3 pm January 26th. Red Cup’s Tricia DiBernardo and Solar Epiphany’s Eric Thomas say this figures into their “2010 resolutions of community dialogue and direct action.” Need more info? Drop by Red Cup (4451 California SW) or call Eric at 206-919-3014. (P.S. They say the rooftop installation at Red Cup has generated more than 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity in the past year.)

West Seattle beverages: Portside Coffee sets sail in Highland Park

That’s West Seattle’s newest coffee stand – Portside Coffee Company (6720 West Marginal Way; map – that’s near the Subway and commercial fueling station), open for business as of today. Portside serves, appropriately enough given its exterior, Silver Cup Coffee. Hours: 4:30 am-2 pm Mondays-Fridays, 8 am-noon Saturdays, closed Sundays. (By our count, it’s the fourth West Seattle drive-thru, after Red Cup in The Junction, West Bay on Harbor Ave, and Starbucks in The Triangle.)

This end-of-holidays weekend was so quiet, post-New Year’s Eve, there wasn’t even enough going on for a full West Seattle Weekend Lineup. West Seattle coffee shops open on Thanksgiving: The map

View West Seattle coffee shops open Thanksgiving 2009 in a larger map

Coffee and cooking just seem to go together. So once again this year, we’ve compiled a list of which coffee shops will be open Thanksgiving (and when). Click any spot on the map and you’ll see the name, address, and hours. These are the ones we have confirmed – by phone or in-person visit – are OPEN tomorrow; those we know are closed, are not listed. Note that the green arrow marks WSB sponsor Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, which is offering coupons for freebies during the 4-day holiday weekend (see them, and print them from, our Coupons page). Use the plus sign on the left side of the map to zoom in, and to go to the fullpage Google Map (including a text list on the left side), click the VIEW LARGER MAP link under the map above. Thanks yet again to Sue Scharff (who works with the zesty Zippy Dogs) for research assistance. There are a few places that didn’t pick up the phone and didn’t have hours posted – so if you know of one we missed, please leave a comment or e-mail us, and we’ll add it. This will also be linked from the WSB West Seattle Holidays page, where you’ll also find standing links (through tomorrow, anyway!) to the list of West Seattle restaurants open tomorrow and the list of West Seattle grocery stores open tomorrow.

Happening now: Wine sale at South Seattle Community College

To get any closer to the winemaking process than this, you’d have to go tour Chelan, Napa or Sonoma: Right at the award-winning Northwest Wine Academy in the center of the South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) campus, there’s a Pre-Thanksgiving Wine Tasting and Sale event under way right now (till 8 pm). Lots of visitors (and buyers) when we visited just before 6 – and along with bottles of student-made, award-winning wine, they’re selling gift baskets too:

By the way, if you’d rather relax in a quieter atmosphere, the brightly lit winemaking room in the top photo is only one of the rooms where the event’s happening – there are others, some with low lights and candles. (To find the Wine Academy, use this campus map – look for the building marked WWB; to find the campus itself, here’s a Google Map.)

The West Seattle Weekend Lineup is in the works, but first, from the WSB Events calendar (where you’ll find a long list of things happening today and beyond), three sales starting/happening today/tonight: First, day 1 of the 2-day anniversary sale at West Seattle’s independent book store Square 1 Books in Jefferson Square – 15% off everything. The doors just opened and Square 1’s open till 6 pm; sale continues tomorrow, 10 am-5:30 pm. Second, South Seattle Community College‘s increasingly renowned wine program invites you to the Pre-Thanksgiving Wine Tasting and Sale this afternoon/evening – 4-8 pm – here are full details on the wines they’re featuring (note: both Square 1 Books and SSCC are WSB sponsors). Finally, the Fauntleroy Art Show and Sale opens at 6:30 tonight at Fauntleroy Church (9140 California SW; more details on Facebook).

West Seattle food/beverage news: Riverhouse Creperie closing

Riverhouse Creperie, the coffee/crepes/gelato spot on the ground floor of ActivSpace on Harbor by The Bridge, just announced to its mailing list that it’s closing as of October 31st. Owner Kathaleen writes:

We regret to announce that, due to health concerns, Riverhouse will be closing its doors on October 31st, 2009. It has been a wonderful experience and I will always remember and be grateful for the fantastic people I met through this journey. I hope you have a chance to come in before we close our doors for good and that I will have a chance to say goodbye to some of you on October 31st.

Thank you for all of your support over the last two years and especially your support, good wishes and prayers that I have received over the last month. I am truly grateful and blessed to have had this experience.

Kathleen has written about her cancer battle on Riverhouse’s Facebook “fan page.” (Thanks to Chas Redmond for forwarding the e-mail announcement.)

Shipwreck Tavern update: Tomorrow confirmed as opening night

When we published this update a week and a half ago on the new Shipwreck Tavern (4210 Admiral Way), they were on track for an October 10th opening – but as we’ve seen with many new restaurant/store projects, you never know for sure till you get there, so we just checked with Shipwreck proprietor Chris Long, who says tomorrow IS definitely opening night. Chris told WSB contributing reporter Mary Sheely that the doors open at 6 pm tomorrow, Colby Imus & the Good Lieutenants will play, music starts between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. – there may be more than one act but they’re the only ones confirmed. Twelve beers on tap including the old standbys like Bud and Bud Light and also selections like Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Manny’s Pale Ale, Mud Shark Porter, Stella Artois, Red Hook, and Jubelale.”

10 days till West Seattle’s new Shipwreck Tavern plans to open

Story and photos by Mary Sheely
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

Well, 4210 SW Admiral Way looks like a wreck. Of course, that’s part of the plan.

A freshly painted sign on the building’s façade – just completed by a familiar face in West Seattle, artist Glenn Case – indicates that the Shipwreck Tavern (map) will soon be open. According to owner Chris Long, that day will be Saturday, October 10.

Long is happy to talk about his new venture, which he will run along with his wife, Jennifer Ferrero. Actually, he’s happy to shout about it – a state-of-the-art PA system isn’t complete, but a jukebox on the wall is blaring AC/DC at deafening levels, competing with the din of hammers and saws.

New location for 2nd West Seattle liquor store: Westwood Village

Thanks to Bell61 in the WSB Forums for first word of this: Brian Smith at the state Liquor Control Board confirms that a replacement location has finally been found for West Seattle’s second liquor store, which closed in Morgan Junction one year ago – the Westwood Village storefront that is now home to Famous Footwear (north side of the center). Smith says the store is expected to open in February. ADDED 12:11 PM: Commenters wondered what the liquor store would do with all that space, since it’s a big storefront; we put the followup question to Smith, who says, “The liquor store will occupy about 50 percent of the space. It is my understanding that a wall will be erected and the landlord will lease the other half to another tenant.”

News from the liquor-license apps: 2 West Seattle notes

First word of new drinking/eating establishments, or changes in existing ones, often comes from the state’s database of liquor-license applications, and this morning there are two applications of note: At 5632 Delridge (map), which would be across the street and a bit south from Olympia Pizza and Pasta, there’s an application to open “La Luna,” seeking a spirits/beer/wine/restaurant/lounge-type license. We’ll see what else we can find out. Meantime, it looks like Garlic Jim’s in The Junction, on the market for more than 9 months, has found a buyer; there’s an application for a new beer/wine license there, with different applicants, but the restaurant’s name is staying the same, according to the online info. (The liquor-license application database can be found here.)

A West Seattle original: Famous bartender turns 70 today

The neon sign beneath which you see West 5’s bartender Jo-Ann Clutcher and proprietor Dave Montoure came from West Seattle’s legendary Admiral Benbow Inn. Jo-Ann worked at the Benbow for 35 years, and was the first hire at West 5 when it opened six years ago, and today, we and her fans are wishing her “Happy 70th Birthday!” Jo-Ann tells us she started out at the Benbow as a waitress, but after only two weeks, the manager told her she needed to handle vacation relief for a bartender – and she wound up sticking with that job till the Benbow closed in 2002: “I just watched how the other bartenders did things and pretty soon I knew how to do the job.” Her secret after three-plus decades of bartending: “You have to love your work.” She works Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and says she loves meeting people, noting that any conversation starting with the question “Where are you from?” always turns out to be a good one. She’s served customers from as far away as Australia, including celebrities – she recalls serving Randy “Big Unit” Johnson a drink when he was still with the Mariners. Biggest change in the overall biz over the years? People drink more responsibly now, she says. Retirement any time soon? Nope.

Food & drink followups: Swinery; Proletariat Pizza; new Starbucks

Three quick updates on food/drink places scheduled to open this month:

THE SWINERY: It’s the home stretch of work to convert the former Muttley Crew Cuts location (first reported here; meantime, MCC is now at 42nd/Admiral) for this new artisan meats/deli shop, and it’s being chronicled online. Check out theswinery.blogspot.com. They still expect to soft-open September 15 (next Tuesday). A few days after that —

(Photo provided by Proletariat’s owners as their sign went up recently)
PROLETARIAT PIZZA: White Center’s new pizza joint, in the northernmost block of the 16th SW business district across from Full Tilt Ice Cream, has pushed its opening day back a week – co-owner Stefanie says they’re now hoping to open September 18th. (12:39 pm note – Bayou points out on the White Center Now version of this item, they’ve got a blog-format website going at proletariatpizza.com.)

JUNCTION STARBUCKS FOLLOWUP: We mentioned when reporting the sighting inside Capco Plaza (42nd/Alaska) that we’d be checking with Starbucks whether this was company-owned or franchised. Finally got the official answer: Franchised (“licensed”). The QFC store in Capco Plaza is projected to soft-open September 16.

West Seattle beverage news: Another Junction Starbucks outlet

Driving past Capco Plaza – the soon-to-open mixed-use building in The Junction at 42nd/Alaska/41st – we spotted a Starbucks sign just inside its southeastern doors. The site is still fenced off, so even when we walked up to take the photo you see above, it wasn’t close enough to figure out whether it’s part of the QFC (which is targeting 9/16 for opening) or a free-standing ministore in the lobby of the building, which will include other retail as well as Altamira Luxury Apartments (so far, the only announced tenant besides QFC and Office Depot has been Desert Sun Tanning). We have inquiries out, to owner/developer Leon Capelouto and to Starbucks. The sighting is notable because there’s already a Starbucks stand inside the nearby Jefferson Square Safeway and because Starbucks opened — then, after a year, closed — a freestanding store on the north end of Jefferson Square (that space is currently advertised as available for lease) – plus of course there’s a multiplicity of other coffee venues within a matter of blocks. ADDED 4:13 PM: Just heard back from building owner Capelouto. He says that’s a freestanding Starbucks kiosk right inside the 42nd/Alaska corner door.

Wine-tasting fundraiser in West Seattle, to help Bali kids learn

 |   How to help | West Seattle news | WS beverages

We’ve been reporting on donation drives to help local kids in need get school supplies — through West Seattle Helpline and Pencil Me In For Kids – both of which are still collecting, so please donate if you haven’t already. But if you have already reached out locally – here’s a chance to help kids overseas, too: A wine-tasting event this Thursday at C&P Coffee in West Seattle, hosted by the nonprofit Scholastic Journey to help kids in Bali. SJ’s Krista Livingston shared the photo and this info about the event:

Scholastic Journey, a non-profit organization, will be hosting a wine-tasting fund raiser on Thursday, September 3, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The wine tasting will be held in West Seattle at C&P Coffee Company, located at 5612 California Avenue SW and will feature a selection of five wines from Ward Johnson Winery, an urban family winery located at the foot of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. Their 06 Merlot won a bronze medal at the 2009 Seattle Wine Awards, and their 06 Cabernet was rated “Outstanding” by Wine Press Northwest. Admission to the event is $15.

Scholastic Journey aims to fill the void in education left by extreme poverty. Scholastic Journey was founded in 2009 to provide an opportunity for children around the world to attend school. Many families are unable to provide their children with the supplies necessary to attend school; items like school uniforms, text books, backpacks, papers, pens and pencils are outside the means of many families in severely impoverished areas. The mission of Scholastic Journey is to enable children to attend school by providing them with these supplies. Provisions will be purchased in the children’s’ own community, in an effort to also help stimulate the local economy.

Scholastic Journey is committed to aid five elementary schools in Bunatan, Bali, Indonesia. Bali has a population of about 3.1 million people (recorded in 2005), 93% of whom adhere to Balinese Hinduism. Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and music. Unfortunately, a series of natural disasters, political coups and terrorist attacks severely affected tourism, bringing much economic hardship to the island. The average annual income in Bunatan and surrounding areas is less than $500, not allowing most families to provide an education for their children.

To find out more about Scholastic Journey, e-mail Krista at admin@scholasticjourney.org – and/or be at the event at C&P Thursday, which includes appetizers and a silent auction.

Feedback Lounge: Welcome to a new West Seattle Blog sponsor

(Members of the Feedback Lounge crew – from left, Tony, Todd, Matt, Bradi, Nell & Drew)
Today we welcome a new WSB sponsor, The Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction, home of “the best drink you never had.” Each week co-owner Matt Johnson comes up with a drink whose recipe might go back 100 years — or just a month or two. Starting today, Matt will shop at the West Seattle Farmers Market each Sunday and uses those fresh ingredients in a drink that evening. We followed him around this morning on his shopping trip:

Matt wound up buying those peaches and adding some sage. Here he talks about how he’ll mix those together:

(Update – since we first published this, The Feedback has tweeted that this drink’s being called “The Morgan Street Monk.”) The Feedback opens at 4 pm; Sundays feature jazz from KPLU. While the Feedback isn’t a venue for live music, it does showcase the best that rock, jazz, the blues, and outlaw country have to offer. Dinner is served from 6-10 pm daily and there’s two happy hours, the first from 4-6, and the second from 10 pm-1 am – seven days a week. It’s at 6451 California SW (map).

Thanks to The Feedback Lounge for supporting local news and information by joining the WSB sponsor team, all listed here with info on how to join!

New Admiral restaurant/pub Porterhouse opens Wednesday

Porterhouse, the new restaurant/pub in the old Blackbird Bistro space by Admiral Theater, is opening at 3 pm Wednesday – just got that confirmed from a staffer. First to report it was the West Seattle-headquartered Washington Beer Blog, via Twitter (@beerblog). Also, thanks to Sarah, who e-mailed us a little while ago about a note on Porterhouse’s door announcing the Wednesday opening. Our most recent update on Porterhouse was this story on July 22nd; our first report was June 5th. Toplines, from those previous stories: It’ll be open to all ages; food hours 11 am-11 pm for starters; menu “gastro-pub … pub food with a twist”; 25 taps (21 added to the space’s pre-existing four!).

West Seattle scenes: Beer (in the) garden; ice-cream open house

Sure, you need a sweater, but otherwise there are music and beverages to keep you warm at West Seattle Nursery till 5 pm today. It’s a fundraiser for Furry Faces Foundation, with Beveridge Place Pub‘s Gary Sink pouring:

We also have a photo to share from an outdoor celebration in the Roxhill area night before last:

(Thursday photo courtesy Lutheran Alliance To Create Housing)
Paul Hogle and other board members from The Lutheran Alliance To Create Housing (LATCH) served ice cream during an open house/ice-cream social at Longfellow and Westwood Courts. LATCH, with 36 member congregations, oversees more than 200 apartments around the city, including these West Seattle properties.

West Seattle Helpline backpack drive: Another business signs up

 |   How to help | West Seattle news | WS beverages

We told you earlier this week about the West Seattle Helpline backpack drive, under way now – one of the ways you can help local kids who can’t afford school supplies. And now Coffee at the Heights (WSB sponsor) has joined Capers in The Junction and Helpline HQ (35th/Morgan) as a dropoff spot for the backpack(s) you buy to donate. Paul from Coffee at the Heights explains their other business is participating too, regarding the backpacks Helpline buys on behalf of those who choose to donate money instead:

If anyone brings in either school supplies, a back pack, or funds to go towards purchasing a backpack or school supplies to Coffee At The Heights, we will give you $1.00 off your beverage! This goes on for the duration of the collection, through August 4th. We will deliver all funds, back packs, and supplies to Helpline.

The second part of our announcement is that PB&J Textiles will be extending our wholesale pricing to Helpline so that they can buy the backpacks at wholesale! We will not be taking any proceeds at all and we will be delivering the backpacks direct to Helpline. This will allow Helpline to get even more backpacks than they normally can, as they have to buy the bags and hope that the stores will give them a discount. So, open up your wallets and stop buy with supplies, money, backpacks, or all three and get a discount on your next beverage!

Coffee at the Heights is at 7349 35th; it’s open 6:30 am – 7 pm weekdays, 7 am to 7 pm Saturdays-Sundays.

West Seattle Summer Fest countdown: Yet more sneak peeks

Yet more from the West Seattle Summer Fest preview files tonight, with the three-day festival less than two days from kickoff (10 am Friday) … At left is West Seattle’s most fashionable designer/barista, Blayne, photographed at Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) this afternoon and also among the amazing artists, merchants, performers, vendors and others you’ll find at Summer Fest. … Erin at Edie’s Shoes, which also happens to be one of four local stores in the new City Stimulus promotion, says that for Summer Fest, “We will be having a promotion for the festival. Buy one pair of full-priced shoes, get a second pair half off, of equal or lesser value (excludes sale) …” Pete Spalding from the West Seattle Food Bank board of directors sent a reminder that the always-popular WS Food Bank raffle tickets will be on sale at Summer Fest – $5 each. We mentioned the tickets when they went on sale last month – grand prize, 2 unrestricted Alaska Airlines tickets! (More in the second half of this WSB report) … Also another note about the beer garden raising money to complete the construction fund for Junction Plaza Park — it’s the beer garden AT the park site — not only is Elliott Bay Brewery making a special beer for the occasion (which Washington Beer Blog writes about here), but we’re also reminded that sales of the other beers available at that garden will chip 25% into the park fund too. And the beer cups will be compostable! … We’ve also heard from Sorensen Orthodontics in Burien, which will have a booth near the kids’ area, and says, “We will be handing out information regarding the Invisalign Orthodontic Treatment and signing up prospective new patients for our Burien and coming soon to West Seattle offices. Summer Fest patrons can also take a guess on how many retainers we have on display with a chance to win a I-Pod Nano!” Free lip balms, too … The full lineup of Summer Fest participants is here – with live music here and other entertainment here. We’ll be publishing more previews so if you’re part of Summer Fest, please e-mail to let us know what you’ll be doing/offering! We’ll be reporting live from WSSF the whole time, too, so we’ll see you there …
