WestSide Baby needs extra volunteers today, Saturday Jan. 2 (now until 4pm), to help sort toys. We will stay open today until 4 pm just for toy sorting volunteers. If you’d like to come down today to help us, show up or call us at 767-1662. Children 7-14 welcome with adult supervision and teens over 14 can be dropped off. Adults always welcome, of course!! We need extra hands today to help sort and package all the toys that have been displaced by the bounty Santa brought this year. Item donations encouraged until 1pm. THANKS!!

White Center/West Seattle fave Full Tilt Ice Cream expands again

It’s been hinted at for a while but today, the formal announcement – Full Tilt Ice Cream is adding a third location, this time in the University District. The news release from proprietor Justin Cline is headed, “Full Tilt Set to Take Over the World. ” They opened in White Center in summer 2008, then in Columbia City earlier this year. Their new location will be at 4759 Brooklyn Avenue NE (map), with January 5th set as opening day. They also are announcing a new partnership with Cafe Vita for not just coffee, but also a special ice-cream flavor for all stores, and they’re adding “more vegan treats” – four vegan flavors and “a variety of vegan baked goods.”

West Seattle has a monthly Art Walk tradition, every second Thursday – and White Center is working on one too, every third Saturday.

Saturday night during this month’s White Center Art Walk, Damien Jurado played live at Full Tilt Ice Cream, Dubsea Coffee featured the art of Joerael Elliot along with a spoken word and open mic performance by youth from Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, student photos from New Start High School graced the walls of Big Al Brewing – these are by Kat Cabrera:

And student paintings were on display at the Salvadorean Bakery.

Shelli Park, chair of the White Center for the Arts board of directors, admits that the rain and holiday week reduced Art Walk attendance somewhat, but she has high hopes for future events, which take place the third Saturday of the month year-round.

“Our goal is to have more local businesses participating to be representative of the entire community,” Park says. “What they will provide will be poetry, music, whatever resonates with their community.” (We photographed her with her daughter at Proletariat Pizza, which also participated, with photos by Alexander King.)

Park says that the goal of the White Center Art Walk is twofold: “To help local artists and to help the businesses. We don’t want the people who are already here to be shut out because of the inevitable gentrification. We want them to be part of it: the diversity, the food, the color, and the culture.”

(Editor’s note: We’re spotlighting some of West Seattle’s nonprofits in the Christmas countdown, to help with the final push to make sure the people they assist get what they need for the holidays. Wednesday we focused on the West Seattle Food Bank; this morning, it’s the White Center Food Bank, which helps people in part of West Seattle too.)

The White Center Food Bank has taken a hit over the last year. Its executive director says the need for its services has increased up to 80 percent over the last 18 months. Still, Rick Jump says the food bank is surviving the economic downtown in some pretty creative ways — in no small part due to the local community stepping up.

Examples? This fall West Seattle’s Avalon Glassworks produced beautiful red glass apples as part of a WC Food Bank fundraiser. The apples are gorgeous — just $80 each (and there are still some left). Half of the proceeds from each apple goes to the food bank.

Plus, the food bank has received a donation of Christmas trees from IKEA and Evergreen High School. And, food bank board member Gary Fasso joined with the local Carpenters Union to create a new “carport style” produce shed. Now volunteers and customers can be protected from the rain as they look through produce.

Jump says the changes are all part of the food bank’s efforts to make it a bit more pleasant experience for those who come in for help. Just coming in for food is hard enough, he says, without having to stand out in the cold.

West Seattle holiday help: WestSide Baby’s special donation hours

With 12 days to go till Christmas, it’s prime time to expand your giving to the nonprofit donation drives and Giving Trees around West Seattle/White Center. Many are listed on our West Seattle Holidays page. And here’s an update just in from Nancy Woodland at WestSide Baby, along with the accompanying photos:

To try to fill our shelves before Christmas, WestSide Baby will hold special Holiday Donation hours of Mon-Friday 9-4pm and Thursday evening 7pm-9pm now through December 22. WestSide Baby will also host an After Hours volunteer sorting event on Thursday December 17, 7-9pm at our facility in White Center. Volunteers ages 14+ will gather to sort through donations of gently used clothes and enjoy a festive “holiday” evening. If you can attend, please email our Volunteer Coordinator at sarah@westsidebaby.org.

Many families and businesses in the area are benefitting WestSide Baby as they gather together to celebrate the holidays. THANK YOU!! Friday evening, kids and parents carrying diapers and bags of warm clothes filed into the new West Seattle Little Gym [WSB sponsor] for a party hosted by two local families. 2500 diapers were collected and 6 bags of winter clothes for children 0 to size 12 appeared to fill the very scarce shelves at WestSide Baby! The Little Gym generously donated space while their staff and owner, Birgit, donated time (and smiles) as they successfully corralled, somersaulted and flipped more than 50 children while parents mingled in the lobby. Local efforts at businesses, schools and private gatherings have resulted in 50 winter coats and thousands of diapers for little ones in King County just this month. Also note that WestSide Baby has set the date for its annual tea – February 6 – tickets are on sale now here, and tomorrow’s the deadline to sign up if you’d like to be a Table Captain.

ORIGINAL 3:35 PM REPORT: Thanks to the person who texted us an alert on this: East of White Center, on the south side of Highland Park, eastbound traffic on Roxbury is backing up in a big way because of a crash at Roxbury/Olson (here’s a map; just before the big hill down to South Park). We’re on our way to the area to check it out. 3:44 PM UPDATE: Officers are turning people around at 8th SW – that affects people driving eastbound from White Center as well as southbound from Highland Park. 5:10 PM UPDATE: Just went back to check – the scene’s now clear and everything’s open in time for evening rush hour.

King County Sheriff’s Office says this is what it’s about: A bail bondsman was trying to arrest someone – which they have the authority to do, per Sgt. John Urquhart – and the would-be arrestee ran off. Now KCSO is involved. So that’s what we know about the search for now; thanks to everyone who’s sent tips/questions. 4:23 PM UPDATE: The helicopter seems to have left the original search area, which we have confirmed on scene is 16th/102nd, on the south side of the main White Center business district.

STOLEN VIOLINS: Joan posted about this in the WSB Forums, and Ricardo has a story on our partner site White Center Now: 2 violins, in a rare double case, stolen from a truck on the Seattle side of White Center yesterday. The violins aren’t worth that much – but the sentimental value is high – and owner Mike teaches violin, so they’re part of his livelihood. This is a Seattle Police case; contact info is in the links above.

STOLEN TRUCK: @alpacadero via Twitter wanted to ask people to be on the lookout for a stolen truck used for work, stolen Friday night from the 9800 block of 18th SW (map). It’s described as a “white Ford utility truck w/ auto crane, welder, etc.” similar to this. That’s King County Sheriff’s Office territory but 911 should be able to help if you see it.

Update: Pre-Thanksgiving help for the hungry

As mentioned earlier this morning, it’s a great day to help make sure nobody’s going hungry this Thanksgiving. For the Eastridge Christian Assembly turkey-and-groceries giveaway this morning, the line before it started at 9 stretched about two blocks down 38th north of Fauntleroy. At the head of the line, more than 30 volunteers were getting ready to hand out about 500 turkeys:

Eastridge pastor Josh Crandall told us he’d talked to some of the people in line and found out that some had come from miles around.

The church buys the food with money donated by its members – in addition to this giveaway, they were doing the same thing this morning at their Eastside campus. Meantime, we mentioned earlier that the White Center Food Bank has someone on hand all day for last-minute donations including turkeys – we dropped in and found Mike and Audrey there to help:

They’re expecting to have people at WC Food Bank till about 5 but it’s a good idea to call ahead. We’ll update local food banks’ status and hours on Monday, too; here’s our most recent update from the West Seattle Food Bank (for which you can donate nonperishables by stopping by West Seattle Bowl during tonight’s Turkey Bowl, after 6 pm).

At Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor), the doors have just opened for the second and final day of the store’s anniversary sale, 15% off, till 5:30 pm. (We photographed Square 1’s Mary Kate Austin and proprietor Gretchen Montgomery toward the end of Day 1 last night.) Another WSB sponsor, Click! Design That Fits, has an artist reception tonight – 6 till 9 pm, Rachel Austin will be at the Admiral District shop to talk about her popular work, which has been on display recent West Seattle Art Walk nights. Help solve a hit-and-run: Reward offered in White Center case

We’ve been covering this story since night before last on partner site White Center Now, when several people sent tips about the crash and resulting traffic trouble – but now investigators are casting a wider net in trying to solve the hit and run (16th/106th) that sent a developmentally disabled man to the hospital, where deputies say he remains in critical condition. If you have any leads on a vehicle that might fit the description above, a $1,000 reward is offered, and 911 will take your tip.

Just out of the WSB inbox, this update from West Seattle Food Bank executive director Fran Yeatts:

The West Seattle Food Bank will be changing hours during the week of Thanksgiving.

We will be distributing our holiday food on Monday, 11/23 for seniors from 9:30 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. and for the general public from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, 11/24 for the general public from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Any donations specific to the Thanksgiving holiday can be delivered on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or Monday, 11/23 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We will also be here to accept donations from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 11/24 and Wednesday 11/25.

We will be closed at 3:00 on Wednesday 11/25, and all day Thursday, 11/26 and Friday, 11/26. We will resume our normal hours on Monday, 11/30.

So busy around West Seattle today, you’d think it was a midsummer Saturday. Continuing till 6 tonight, Catsino at Beveridge Place Pub is a fundraiser for Furry Faces Foundation, with fun games and more – and once again this year there’s an “afterparty” of sorts tomorrow, the Morgan Junction Pet Stroll. Till 4 pm, there’s a craft fair at Bridge Park – vendor Anna sent this photo before we dropped by for a few of our own:

She says, “We’re having fun selling funky knit hats and fabulous finger mustaches! There are lots of other beautiful and original wares like the Loteria onesies and handmade market bags.” And continuing till 7 pm, grand opening day 1 at Dubsea Coffee on 8th SW in Greenbridge, about a block south of Roxbury:

Labor of love under way inside WestSide Baby headquarters

A little remodeling is under way at the White Center headquarters of WestSide Baby, which serves families in need all over West Seattle as well as WC and the surrounding area: WestSide Baby’s Nancy Woodland says Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor) is donating a work-week of labor, and got $500 in donated materials from Dunn Lumber, to help make their quarters safer and more organized. Nancy shared some photos – the one above is the donation-dropoff area, “before” – here’s a holding zone, “after”:

She explains, “This improvement will keep our volunteers safe from any falling towers of clothing waiting to be sorted. Rocco from Ventana Construction has been quick and professional. Getting done quickly is key so we can avoid interruptions in serving children.” WestSide Baby, by the way, is on Twitter (just started today at @westsidebaby33) and Facebook, where within the past hour, they posted “Our shelves for clothing sizes 4 – 12 are depleted. If you have items to donate, please drop them off at our facility or our dropoff locations as soon as you can. We have children requesting items, like winter coats, that we cannot fill.” (Dropoff spots include Fauntleroy Church, 9140 California SW, and West Seattle Kids’ Salon, 6965 California SW.)

Holy Family Parish School middle-school teacher M. Barrett Miller e-mailed to share this photo, explaining: “One of our outreach programs is taking our Middle School students to the West Seattle Salvation Army to socialize and serve the elderly. I rotate the grades every couple of weeks to give all our Middle School students the opportunity to interact with the elderly at the center. Every day the Salvation Army serves lunch and offers an atmosphere of warmth and friendship to those who partake. Over the last year, our students have built a strong relationship with some of the attendees. Toward the end of the school day today, just a few blocks south of the city-limits line, the students and staff of White Center Heights Elementary School gathered to celebrate. In part, what they were celebrating was music – which is why they got a guest visit from members of the Seahawks’ Blue Thunder drum line:

But they also were celebrating community, and generosity. This is the assembly during which they said thanks for dozens of musical instruments donated through an informal drive announced a few weeks back here on WSB. It was the brainchild of a WCH Elementary librarian Nancy Hallberg and her daughter, Eliza Junkerman, who talked with WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli at today’s event:

By the way, Eliza’s fiancee’ Blake partnered in this enterprise too, collecting the donated instruments:

Eliza tells Christopher it’s not too late to donate yours, if you didn’t see the story the first time around, which is where you will find her contact info. Even if it turns out not to be right for the kids at White Center Heights, they’ll find a place – she says one donated instrument was a beautiful child-sized cello, and while that didn’t work into the music program at WCH, it’s going to an area middle school. Booted from Lincoln Park, bicycle race moves to White Center

Just announced on Twitter by MFG Cyclocross, promoters of the bicycle race that was expected to bring 1,000 racers and spectators to West Seattle’s Lincoln Park till the Parks Department revoked permission (as first reported here yesterday): MFG says the race is now rescheduled for Lakewood Park in White Center, still happening Saturday. (It’s not on the MFG website yet but it IS reported on the King County Parks news site.)

The “heavy rescue” callout at 17th/Roxbury is from a crash (map) has Roxbury blocked eastbound at 17th (and 17th is affected southbound). There’s a heavily damaged pickup truck visible at the scene – investigators tell us that’s one of two vehicles that were involved; its driver was one of two people taken to the hospital. 9:52 AM UPDATE: Tony Bradley sent photos of the scene as firefighters worked to get the driver out:

FULL TILT ICE CREAM WINS “BEST OF WESTERN WASHINGTON”: They’re headquartered in White Center but have been adopted by enough West Seattleites to feel like something of a WS annex, in the nonpolitical sense. As announced in the WSB Forums, Full Tilt Ice Cream has won its category in the KING 5 “Best of Western Washington” voting, and our video shows co-proprietors Justin Cline and Ann Magyar getting interviewed this afternoon by KING 5 producer Eric Riddle for the upcoming broadcast. Full Tilt first opened in White Center less than 2 years ago and has since expanded to Columbia City, with a Ballard location in the works too. (Any other WS/WC businesses win BoWW? Let us know!)

“SHOWMANSHIP” WIN FOR ZIPPYDOGS: Elise Lindborg from ZippyDogs, a West Seattle-based promotional-products company, is howling proud of their win for “Best Booth Showmanship” at this year’s Northwest Event Show, which recently drew thousands to the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Lindborg, who identifies herself as ZippyDogs’ “Top Dog,” notes, “We try to make every day fun, and we strive to be helpful, professional, friendly, and yes, a little playful!” They’re online at zippydogs.com.
