City Council says yes to White Center annexation vote “path”

Seattle City Council members have just unanimously (8-0, Sally Clark absent) approved the resolution that lays out a path toward a potential annexation vote for White Center and vicinity in November 2011, though the city wouldn’t have to commit to a vote till early next year. To be clear, the vote a short time ago in the City Council’s Regional Development and Sustainability Committee is NOT a commitment to a White Center (etc.) annexation vote in November 2011. But as committee chair and City Council President Richard Conlin summarized the 3-0 approval of this resolution, it puts the city “on the path” toward a vote. The next chapter in the rollercoaster/seesaw saga of “Who will annex White Center (and vicinity)?”: The full council must vote on the resolution, likely Monday. Just in from WestSide Baby‘s Nancy Woodland – who will be honored next week as the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce‘s Community Hero of the Year – these photos and the following report came with the subject line, “A good thing happened in White Center today too!”

While helicopters were hovering overhead, WestSide Baby was receiving a generous donation from Huggies! A truck loaded up with 288 bottles of Huggies Body Wash AND 158 New Baby Gift Baskets arrived at our facility this morning. WestSide Baby receives hundreds of requests each week and we can’t wait to provide brand new items to local kids. The Huggies Body Wash is particularly great because the older children we serve (up to size 12), rarely have anything here in that category. The Huggies Gift Baskets have diapers, lotion, wipes and wash too. We were even lucky enough to have a volunteer services offered for the truck!

If you happen to be a family with boys… Our shelves for both Size 8 and Size 10 boys clothes are completely empty for order fillers volunteering tomorrow. We’re open 9-1pm if you have time for a quick cleanout and drop off!!

ORIGINAL 11:19 A REPORT: We’ve received a few calls about the chopper over SE West Seattle/White Center. Officers are after a woman described on the scanner as having a shotgun; it started in the 10700 block of 18th. More to come. NOON UPDATE: We’ve just talked at the scene with King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. John Urquhart. He tells us this began when residents interrupted a burglary in progress. They’re OK but three suspects — including the aforementioned armed woman – are being sought. 12:45 PM UPDATE: Our video of Sgt. Urquhart’s media briefing is back in house; uploading now, but in the meantime, the newest details – one suspect was caught, two on the loose. He says all three are believed to be teenagers. (added) Here’s the video (you can hear the helicopter/s in the background):

ADDED 11:14 PM: Two more suspects have been arrested, after a raid on a South Seattle motel, according to this KING 5 report.

Two weeks ago, the Burien City Council started the process of considering a resolution to officially indicate interest in moving ahead with annexing northern North Highline – including White Center – once it had “successfully incorporated” southern North Highline (which becomes part of Burien next week). At the time, Seattle was looking at a vote in White Center (etc.) this November. Then suddenly last Friday, it was announced that Mayor McGinn no longer wanted to move that fast, since the budget picture wasn’t looking too good – maybe a November 2011 vote. And so tonight, Burien councilmembers decided to cancel their resolution, during a meeting that at one point was standing- and window-sill-sitting (photo right) room only. Here’s our first report on partner site White Center Now. What now? Depends on who decides to make the next move first.

Seattle annexation vote for White Center? Not this fall after all

In late January, we broke the news that Mayor McGinn wanted to pursue a White Center (and environs) annexation vote this fall. Tonight, that plan has changed. This afternoon, the city’s budget boss unveiled the financial analysis that councilmembers had asked to see before considering whether to support the call for a vote – and Beth Goldberg announced, while presenting the analysis today, that the costs would be too high for the budget-crunched city to seek a vote any sooner than fall 2011. Meantime, Burien may fast-track the area instead; more details at partner site White Center Now.

Video: County Executive at 34th District’s Democratic caucus

The state Democratic Party decided not to do precinct caucuses since it’s an offyear, moving straight to legislative-district caucuses like the one happening now at Mount View Elementary in White Center, for Democrats registered to vote in the 34th Legislative District (including WC, West Seattle, Vashon, part of Burien, and more). They heard from this district’s highest-ranking Democrat – though he currently holds a nonpartisan office – King County Executive Dow Constantine). He and 34th DDs chair Tim Nuse both urged the 70 or so people in attendance to not get complacent in the wake of the big 2008 victories. They’re electing state-convention delegates today, among other business (here’s the agenda). Among those on hand: State Reps. Eileen Cody and Sharon Nelson (Sen. Joe McDermott was expected once the Nature Consortium brunch wrapped up) and at least two candidates for Nelson’s job (she’s running for McDermott’s seat since he in turn is running for County Council) – Marcee Stone and Sabra Schneider. First – a big part of the caucus was selection of delegates to the state convention – and that meant lineups like this one, awaiting time to make a pitch:

And there was a candidate whose fate will be decided within days: Kirk Prindle – a West Seattleite who is one of five people running for one seat in the King Conservation District board election this Tuesday:

The KCD election isn’t conducted like other countywide votes. No voting by mail; no close-to-everyone polling places. You have to vote in person at one of several polling places; none in WS – the nearest is Downtown Seattle – they’re all listed here. All three community councils meeting this week have announced their agenda highlights:

TUESDAY – WEST SEATTLE CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL: This meeting’s scheduled guest is Benjamin Kinlow, Crime Prevention Coordinator for the Southwest Precinct, which means he also helps coordinate the Block Watch program. The newly formed West Seattle Blockwatch Captains’ Network – which you can join on Facebook – is urging members to be there. This meeting also routinely includes a crime-stats update from local police leadership, and time to discuss your neighborhood concerns. 7 pm Tuesday, Southwest Precinct (Delridge/Webster; map).

WEDNESDAY – DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOODS DISTRICT COUNCIL: Scheduled guests include City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw, Nathan Torgelson from Seattle Parks (to discuss the Camp Long Lodge renovations), and Mark Ufkes and Peggy Weiss from the pro-Seattle-annexation White Center Homeowners’ Association. DNDC members also will discuss their recent retreat, as they meet at 7 pm Wednesday, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way; map).

THURSDAY – ALKI COMMUNITY COUNCIL: West Seattle’s school board rep Steve Sundquist is a scheduled guest, along with Seattle Parks staff. ACC meets at 7 pm Thursday, 6115 SW Hinds (map); get the latest info at alkinews.com.

ONE MORE BIG MEETING NEXT WEEK: Monday night, 7 pm at Denny International Middle School, it’s the next in a series of meetings around the cities to talk about Mayor McGinn’s Youth and Families Initiative (explained here). Previous meetings in other neighborhoods have drawn hundreds of people. This initiative involves almost every issue you can imagine – safety, education, health, environment – so whatever you care most deeply about, be ready to advocate for it.

While stopping by Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, we got that photo of some of the pet food dropped off there for the White Center Food Bank pet-food drive that wraps up today. Food’s been collected at Hotwire and two Burien locations for the past few weeks – and today you can drop off donations at WCFB (which serves part of West Seattle too) until 4 pm, 10829 8th SW (map). LEARN FROM THE CHAMPS: That photo shows the triumphant Seattle Lutheran High School Men’s Varsity Baseball Team (2009 Tri-District Tournament Champions) from last year – and this weekend, they’re hosting a baseball clinic for Baseball Players 5-10 years old, March 13-14. WEST SEATTLE/FAUNTLEROY YMCA SPORTS SIGN-UPS: Next round of sign-ups start this Thursday at the Y (WSB sponsor). Over the weekend, we published news on partner site White Center Now that the Democratic caucus for the 34th Legislative District is coming up next Sunday, March 14, at Mount View Elementary School in WC. (See the announcement here.) In comments on that story, Highland Park’s Blair Johnson points out an important reminder – this Sunday is also the start of Daylight Saving Time – at 2 am Sunday (aka Saturday night), your clock goes ahead one hour (the “spring forward” half of “spring forward/fall back”).

It’s March, which means Feinstein Challenge time – your donations to the two food banks serving West Seattle go further! This news release sent by White Center Food Bank executive director Rick Jump explains, on behalf of the WS Food Bank as well:

The White Center Food Bank and West Seattle Food Bank are encouraging community members to make donations between March 1st and April 30th so they can receive additional funds from the Feinstein Foundation’s $1 Million Challenge.

For the past 12 years Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein has made $1 Million available to help anti-hunger agencies. For every cash and food donation received by the end of April the Feinstein Foundation will add a financial contribution.

“During these tough economic times local food banks are serving more families than ever. Many of them are first time visitors to a food bank,” said Rick Jump, executive director of the White Center Food Bank. “This increased demand for services is likely to continue over the next several months and we urgently need to support of the community to insure that we are able to provide nutritious meals to our neighbors in need,” said Jump.

Local kids need you: Can you be an after-school homework helper?

Are you a retired teacher? Are you currently pursuing a degree in education and would like to increase your teaching experience in a culturally diverse setting? Are you a previous camp counselor or someone who has worked with elementary-school students and knows how to effectively work with them? An hour a week could do wonders for our local students and their academic success.

Neighborhood House (www.nhwa.org) has an immediate need for reliable, patient volunteer after-school tutors at Mt. View Elementary in White Center. Volunteer your time helping students with their homework. Show them how to break big words into syllables. Tell them your secrets on how to solve fractions. Inspire them to do well in school. Your presence alone will make these energetic students smile.

We’re looking for people who are available for at least an hour between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. once a week for at least three months. If you (or anyone you know) are interested in becoming an after-school tutor, please e-mail RominaR@nhwa.org for more information on how to get started as an after-school tutor.

Update: “Heavy rescue” response near Highway 509

The “heavy rescue” call is for 1st Ave S/S Cloverdale, which is on the easternmost edge of West Seattle, east of White Center, around the entrance to 509 (here’s a map). On our way to check. 9:15 PM UPDATE: The fire response “closed” on the 911 log fairly quickly, and most of the fire responders were turning around and leaving as we arrived. We can see a car in the ditch on the western side – alongside the westbound lanes – of the hill, and that lane’s blocked off, but traffic is getting through, and there’s no place to pull off to find out more about what happened – but with the fire/medic units canceling, it appears so far no serious injuries.

For those interested in Mayor McGinn’s push for a White Center vote this November on annexing to Seattle (as reported here last Wednesday) – the City Council briefing has wrapped up, and we’re writing up toplines as fast as we can on partner site White Center Now – see the story here. The timeline laid out this morning is: First the council would vote March 8 on indicating an interest in the November vote – but wouldn’t have to commit to it till August; in the meantime, the rest of the process – including the state/county Boundary Review Board – proceeds. Next step, prior to the hoped-for March 8 vote, would be a February 19 hearing before the Development/Sustainability committee chaired by Council President Richard Conlin. White Center in Seattle? Annexation vote proposed for November

We’ve just confirmed with Kenny Pittman, a senior adviser to Mayor Mike McGinn, that the mayor is proposing to have White Center vote this November on whether to be annexed to Seattle – that’s the entire area between the current city limits, and what will be the northernmost city limits of Burien when the voter-approved North Highline South annexation takes effect later this year. Pittman first disclosed the plan in a letter to Burien’s mayor Joan McGilton, West Seattle Rep. Eileen Cody and Rep. Ross Hunter (see the letter here), responding to their request for clarification of the mayor’s intent regarding White Center annexation; we updated the annexation issue just last week, when Councilmember Jean Godden discussed it during a brown-bag lunch at West Seattle Chamber of Commerce offices (here’s our report on partner site White Center Now).

Pittman told WSB by phone that City Council approval will be required to get this before voters in November, and the process of working toward that will begin next Monday, when he briefs the council on the plan. We have requests for comment in to both Seattle Council president Richard Conlin, Burien City Manager Mike Martin and the White Center Community Development Association.

ADDED 3:28 PM: Speaking for Council President Conlin, Rob Gala says, “(He) is ready to put this before the council – we’ll start talking about it right away. He’s been an advocate of annexation for a while, and we’re ready to put it before the people for a vote.”

Just in from WestSide Baby‘s Nancy Woodland – another MLK Day of Service opportunity:

WestSide Baby would love extra hands on MLK Day! We’ve received so many donations of clothes since the holidays, we could really use extra teen or adult hands to sort through all the donations. We inspect each article of clothing for cleanliness and condition before we shelve it by size so it’s ready for another volunteer to place it in an order for local children in need.

We will be open extra hours on Monday from 2-5pm for up to 15 volunteers! It’s a great opportunity for high schoolers looking for service hours on their day off. Please let us know you are coming by emailing sarah@westsidebaby.org.

We will also have our regular third Thursday Sorting Frenzy this Thursday evening from 7-9 pm!

WestSide Baby needs extra volunteers today, Saturday Jan. 2 (now until 4pm), to help sort toys. We will stay open today until 4 pm just for toy sorting volunteers. If you’d like to come down today to help us, show up or call us at 767-1662. Children 7-14 welcome with adult supervision and teens over 14 can be dropped off. Adults always welcome, of course!! We need extra hands today to help sort and package all the toys that have been displaced by the bounty Santa brought this year. Item donations encouraged until 1pm. THANKS!!
